We start with one of the most famous New Year firework displays in Sydney, Australia. The Sydney Harbour comes alive with over a million spectators out to witness the extravagant firework display at midnight. If the crowds prove too much for you, there is an option to hire out your own private boat! If it’s a sit down experience you are looking for, a table at one of the many waterfront restaurants by Sydney Harbour Bridge can be booked for uninterrupted and spectacular views of the firework display.
Popular with backpackers and party-goers, there are plenty of adventures taking place during New Year’s Eve in Goa. New Year parties in Goa usually last until the early hours of the morning, and is the perfect place to experience the New Year while dancing on the beach, with the sand between your toes and the lit up palms swaying in the distance. Goa is also popular amongst Bollywood stars, so pack your bags, book your flight and party with the stars while celebrating the New Year under the stars.
One of the biggest street parties in the UK, Hogmanay is one of the greatest New Year celebrations. On the 30th December, torches are carried from Parliament Square to Calton Hill where fireworks light up the sky. With New Year’s Eve comes 80,000 people who will sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ in the streets – join in for what is the biggest and loudest rendition in the world. A number of live acts also perform throughout the night before the famous firework display. If you’ve still got some energy left on New Year’s Day, the celebrations continue throughout the day with traditional games created by local artists.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
With its warmer weather during the New Year, the city of Rio becomes packed with two million visitors who watch the spectacular fireworks display on the beach. Copacabana Beach is where all the action takes place, starting from 8pm onwards. Shows include Brazilian samba and rock bands to really get the crowd energised. A New Year’s Eve tradition in Rio is to wear white which signifies good luck for the coming year.
Pancakes are the way forward in Berlin on New Year ’s Day. The annual pancake race (Berliner Silvesterlauf) brings runners in costume as they run either 2, 4, 6, 10 or 15 kilometres through various neighbourhoods while flipping pancakes the entire way! Come evening time however, the real party takes place at Brandenburg Gate with a remarkable firework display. Teufelsberg and Viktoriapark also offer great views of the fireworks.
Koh Phangan, Thailand
Welcome to the world’s most famous full-moon party! Sunrise Beach in Haad Rin is where all the action takes place when the party begins as soon as it’s dark and continues throughout the night into the early hours of the morning AND into the afternoon! If it’s a crazy party you’re looking for, look no further!
The rooftop of the NEMO museum is where you want to be on New Year’s Eve for the best view of the numerous firework displays which will be taking place. Make a visit to any one of the four squares: Rembrandtplein, Nieuwmarkt, Museumplein and Dam Square. All four host parties and there’s plenty of Oliebollen to go around (sweet fried dough with apple and raisins).
Miami is one of the most happening party cities there is, and New Year’s is celebrated in a lavish manner with a glittering fireworks display at Miami’s famed South Beach. Live entertainment begins at 8pm at Bayfront Park and features performances from various artists suiting everyone’s tastes whether it’s Latin, Reggae, Hip Hop or Rock. For a unique experience, you may wish to go on one of the many New Year’s Eve cruises offered. These feature DJs blasting music throughout the night and makes for a perfect setting with dazzling views of the city.
London, United Kingdom
One of the biggest New Year’s events taking place is the free fireworks display which takes place at the London Eye. The spectacular 10 minute display takes off as Big Ben chimes at midnight. One of the best places to view the fireworks is from Westminster Bridge, although they are visible across central London. There are plenty of clubs and pubs to choose from although it is recommend to book tickets in advance as they become extremely packed. Ice Rinks at the Natural History Museum and Somerset House are open until 1am with Somerset House offering cocktails at its lounge and exclusive access of the River Terrace in which to view the fireworks.
Niagara Falls, Canada
Right here in Canada, you can enjoy a great New Year’s Eve at one of the most spectacular destinations. Thousands gather at Queen Victoria Park to eat and drink whilst enjoying the free New Year’s Eve Concert Extravaganza. The falls make for a stunning backdrop and are illuminated as part of the annual Winter Festival of Lights featuring over 3 million lights on a four-mile route. Two firework displays take place at 9pm and at midnight over the falls and are televised across the country.
