Who Should Go: Lord of the Ring fanatics, and those suffering from post-ski-season blues.
Why We Love It: Ok, so we might have a soft spot for ANY LOTR reference, but the picturesque scenery is just one reason as to why we love this ski destination. Located close the New Zealand’s Southern Alps, the humble town is modestly fashioned with eco-lodges, hostels, quaint café’s and pubs.
As a truly New Zealand style ski resort, its peaks are a little ways from the base town. However, each peak boasts a little something special for skiers and snowboarders of varying levels.
While Wanaka’s powder and town life is incomparable to other ski resorts we’ve mentioned –such as the Niseko or Mont Tremblant- we love this place because of their ski season. For those wanting to get their snow fix even during the summer season, Wanaka has their slopes open from June until October.
