We recently sat down for a chat with Cheryl, a client of our River Cruise Advisor Dianne about her recent Danube River Cruise and here is what she had to say:

Can you describe for us which river cruise you decided to book??

We booked the AmaWaterways and Backroads Cycling & Danube River Cruise tour. We began in Nuremberg and sailed to Budapest, in between, there was only one day where we weren't in a port. In each city we had the choice of a walking or cycling tour. What I loved about the experience was how much we were able to see of each city because of the cycling. In the evenings, it was nice to come back to the ship to relax on board with cocktails, gourmet cuisine and socialize with people from around the world.

What was the entertainment like on board?

The entertainment at night was very experiential. One evening, they had someone on board to explain how the locks worked and the rest of the evening was spent listening to the pianist over cocktails. Another night we had a German feast and they brought dancers on board for the event.

What was your favourite city?

Budapest! No question, I loved Budapest the most as it has so much history, culture and the shopping is much less expensive than in the other European cities.

What time of year did you travel?

The end of May to June, which was perfect as it's not too hot.

What did you love the most about your Danube River Cruise?

I loved that it felt like a floating luxury hotel, we unpacked once and we were in a new city or town almost every day. The destinations were brought to us and everything was included.

How would you compare an ocean going cruise vs. a river cruise?

When I was on board a regular cruise, I felt I needed to race to see everything on board because they were so large and I didn't want to miss anything. On the river cruise ship, it was about the destinations, so I relaxed knowing each day would bring us to a new city to explore. The pace was much more peaceful.

What tips would you give for first time River Cruisers?

Book in advance and ask for a top floor because you receive the best views. Having been on the larger ocean going ships, (which typically have smaller cabins), I thought river cruise cabins might be the same.  I was pleasantly surprised at how sizeable and comfortable they were.
