Mexico Marriage Requirements

In Mexico only civil marriages are recognized as legal. A civil marriage in Mexico is fully valid for legal purposes worldwide.

Canadian citizens or landed immigrants wishing to get married in Mexico must present the following documents before the Officer of the Civil Registry office of the city or town where the marriage is to take place:

  • A completed application form obtained in Mexico at the Registry Office. This includes a statement as to whether the couple will maintain separate property and assets or have joint property. This statement may not be valid for future purposes, under Canadian law.
  • Valid Passports and Migratory Form to prove legal status in Mexico
  • Certified copy of Canadian birth certificates, which must be legalized by the Mexican Consular Office having jurisdiction over the region where the birth certificates were issued
  • Divorce Decree or Death Certificate of previous marital partner (if applicable); duly legalized by the Mexican Consulate with jurisdiction over the region where the divorce/death occurred
  • Two legally qualified witnesses over the age of 18 with Passports, Birth Certificates and Tourist Cards, must be present at the ceremony
  • A physician's certificate for blood tests and chest x-rays performed in Mexico, within 15 days of the ceremony
  • Documents must be officially translated into Spanish and notarised

Bride and groom must arrive in Mexico at least 3 working days prior to wedding (for witnesses, 2 days). Marriages are performed at the offices of the Civil Registry, but may be performed elsewhere for an additional fee (marriage fees vary throughout Mexico). People under 18 years of age cannot marry without the consent of their parents or legal guardians. Under no circumstances can males under the age of sixteen, or females under the age of fourteen, be married in Mexico. In some states divorced people cannot marry in Mexico until one year after the divorce order has been issued by the judge, unless otherwise indicated in the divorce decree.

Important: It is the responsibility of the person getting married in Mexico to contact the Civil Registry of the State where the ceremony will take place. The Civil Registry will set the requirements for the ceremony. Each state may have different regulations.
