Cancun, Mexico

Riu Palace Peninsula is located next to the Riu Caribe on a dazzling stretch of white sand beach, framed by tropical vegetation and crystal clear turquoise water. This Riu Palace luxury resort features seven specialty restaurants with wonderful cuisine ranging from Japanese to Italian to Mexican, six bars, water sports, two freshwater pools (one heated in the winter and the second with a Jacuzzi and swim-up bar) daily entertainment and an on-site Mayan ruin discovered during the hotel construction.

The RiuLand Kids Club will keep children entertained with supervised games, while the new RiuArt program will help you discover your inner artist. For an extra treat, indulge in pampering treatments at the Renova Spa.

Location: Beachfront in Cancun's hotel zone, 10 min to downtown, 45 min from the airport.

Our Opnion

An outstanding hotel to visit when you're in Cancun. Compared to the other resorts, the Riu Palace Peninsula is a bit larger than other resorts that you would find along the hotel zone. Great a la carte and buffet items to choose from here. The variety of food here is incredible. It can be guaranteed that you'll never experience the same thing twice when dining in a restaurant. Compared to most other all-inclusive resorts, the quality of food here is good. The resort grounds are always clean and well-maintained. While the majority of the rooms are pretty good, the special suites have a tendency to be cramped. They may offer extra perks such as an in-suite jacuzzi. The pools are what this resort is notable for. Regardless of your age, there is a pool atmosphere here that is appropriate for you. While the staff remain attentive and try their best to accomodate to your needs, be advised that the check-in process can be relatively lengthy.

NOT AN ADULT ONLY RESORT!!! I wanted to start with this because that was what I was looking for when I booked. They have ADULT only villas, but everything else is for everyone. So you will see kids, families etc everywhere you go. I've stayed at multiple RIU adult only resorts. That's all I book. When I read online adult only, I think the site confused the adult only villa. I believe las Americanas is the only adult only there. I found out as I was checking in. So I got my room updated to the adult only section. I was bummed that the beach in front of the adult only section was not just for adults. I feel that entire side should be dedicated exclusively for adults!

The room was ok. I was in room 2406. It had a jacuzzi on the patio. The room itself was very spacious, but there were bugs everywhere. I tried killing them, but they kept coming back! The decorative bedding were dirty. I placed them in a pile on the floor with the wash sign on them. The maids consistently kept placing these dirty items on the bed instead of washing them.

As I am vegan, I did not eat at the resturants. I was disappointed in the vegan options available in the buffet. I need everyone to understand that vegetarians can eat vegan food, but vegans cannot eat vegetarian food. It seemed that majority of the veggie dishes were cooked in butter not oil. They also added milk and cheese to most of their veggies as well. This was very upsetting. They staffing in the buffet also appeared to be very prejudice/colorist. I was ignored so many times. I had to walk up to people to get silverware or a drink because I'd just sit there and no one would come to my table. Ironically enough, I tip everyone. I typically bring $300 usd to all inclusive resorts specifically for tipping. I left here with $256usd. I left Jamaica with -$200, I ended up getting more cash. I'd ask for drinks, and wouldn't get it for like 15-20mins. However, I did notice when a white or Hispanic person came in, some even set next to me. They get serviced first. Even though I was there longer. It was disheartening. I visited cabo and stayed in riu Baja California. I did not experience this. Neither did I at the riu raggae in Jamaica. So it has to be a cancun issue.

The entertainment sucked here. I excepted more activities that riu usually provide. The dj for the riu parties sucked. He played the same songs all 3 parties I went to. He also didn't change genres enough for me. You have a mixed crowd that means you should play a mixture of music equally.

Would I stay at this location again? No. Did I like it overall? No. I did enjoy my excursions though.

I have pictures of the bugs and dirty bedding, I just can't figure out how to post them.

I would not recommend this hotel to anybody.

I will start with the pros. The location of the hotel is great. It is near ferries to Isla Mujeres and near the famous Cancun strip to bars. The view and hotel's beach is amazing.

Our stay at this hotel was very disappointing
to say the very least. My friend and I came to Cancun for the very first time and unfortunately left unsatisfied for a few reasons. To start, the majority of the reviews for this hotel exceeding many expectations made us very excited for our stay. However, the first "red flag" was the laid-back service and lack of enthusiasm upon our arrival at check in. We were told and saw in many reviews that we would be welcomed with a "welcome drink". We had to remind the person at the desk about that which was very unprofessional. The hotel in its entirety is VERY outdated. My friend and I weren't expecting 5 star food however the food was underwhelming being that the food seems to be reused at the buffet. The food was cold and no variety. The restaurants offered during the evening is first come first serve, the hours on the brochure we were given says it's open from 5-10. My friend and I would walk in at 9:10pm and we would be denied entry because the kitchen and dining room would close in 20 minutes. Please, to the hotels administration, we ask for more clarity and consideration. We had to leave and eat outside the hotel the 4 nights we stayed due to this. Lastly, there seems to be no security after 11 pm which made my friend and I feel very unsafe after arriving from clubs, even after leaving the hotels sports bar, no one was around to make sure we were ok OR anyone at the front desk. Also, we came to this hotel because of the "Riu parties" they offer however we were upset because the genres are not told you until you go and it was just of waste of time. TIP for the hotel, you should specify when and what type of music the parties will be.

Be careful of Karen in the jewelry shop! Do not buy!

OVERBOOKED THE DAY WE ARRIVED!

We arrived on a Tuesday afternoon and as soon as we got to the hotel the front desk was a mess with people crying and very upset. We talked to someone and they said we are sorry they are overbooked and we don't have any rooms for you. We thought they were joking but nope. We had booked a 2 bedroom suite for my wife and I and our 3 kids months before though Apple Vacations.

The front desk said they could put us up in the RIU Caribbean next door which was a step below the palace, smaller, and did not have room service or beach service. They did not offer any compensation for the downgrade even though we paid more. My wife was not happy and refused to accept that. The front desk told us to wait and they came back 10 minutes later after talking to others about moving them to the Caribbean as well.

They told us they found two rooms in the palace but they weren't next to each other. Only one was ready and the other would be ready later that evening and then they would move us to two rooms together which is their 2 bedroom suite...

We reluctantly agreed and at least had one room to go to. We all piled and hung out for a while and explored the hotel. We went back to the front desk at 8 because we had not heard anything to get keys to the other room. They gave us keys and said we were set and we could keep one room the next day until our other rooms together were ready.

We got settled in and as my kids were getting ready for bed and took one with me to the new room. I opened up the door and knew something was wrong... I saw stuff all over and luckily no people but it was obvious I walked into someone else's room.

We went back to the front desk and told them what happened and they apologized and said someone gave our other room away! We asked what was going to happen now and they said they had no rooms for us and it was too late to go to the Caribbean. They said they would make it up to us, but we had to stay in one room the first night. They brought us two roll out beds and we crammed ourselves in for the night.

The next day they moved us to a 2 bedroom suite on the 15th floor which they claim was an upgrade when though that's what we paid for.

That day they called and said they would get us dinner reservations to any restaurant even though they weren't even that busy. We emailed Apple Vacations and they said they would talk to the hotel and make things right.

Apple emailed back and said the hotel upgraded us and gave us a room so they weren't going to do anything!!!

The hotel had mentioned giving us free nights in the future, etc, which we really didn't want after this experience. Apparently after our upgrade that all went away even though I thought that's what we paid for...

We emailed Apple back and they said they would look into it again with the hotel, and we still haven't heard back 4 days later.

The hotel itself is okay. A lot of pools. Small beach. Lots of sea grass. Pools close really early at 6. Rooms have zero privacy with open bathrooms. Hallways are incredibly hot as are the elevators.

Terrible choice as a hotel, the hotel is run down, old, the facilities are in poor condition, the employees are not friendly at all and they answer everything reluctantly, for what this hotel costs you could stay in a much better one, I have come to Cancun countless times and this one It is my first bad experience in a hotel, I will never return to any RIU and I hope this review helps people who want to stay at this hotel to look for another much better option at the same price

Stayed at the RIU for 10 days. Had the best time at the Kabuki restaurant with Pacheco as our server! He was so much fun and made it one of the funnest nights at the resort. If you go you must go to the Kabuki and have him as your server!!!

UNBELIEVABLE!

Straight from the airport, they picked us up and were welcomed with drinks upon arrival.

We got to sample their delicious buffet while waiting for our rooms. By the time we were to get the keys, we were told we got UPGRADED!

Food choices were amazing and friendly for those with dietary restrictions. There’s plenty for everyone both kids and adults alike.

The Caribe location is perfect for the younger/single crowd while the Palace is more suited for those with families.

The parties are amazing with flowing drinks and food for everyone.

Amazing staff and management. The “all in”” packages are true to its word and worth its hype.

We already made plans to bring our friends here with us in the coming months.

Party hotel that is nothing but freshly turned 18 yr olds

Excellent service!!

My stay at the hotel was wonderful 💕

I was there 10 days and we can't complain about anything. We love it. I highly recommend it.

The hotel is great, the staff is great. The food, Mexico is known for amazing cuisines. I just hope people don’t think this place is how Mexican food is. Everything lacks any resemblance of flavor. The food destroys anything they could do here. Won’t do a RIU property again. Never mind the waits

It was my 6th stay in Cancun. This hotel is the best one so far. Everything was great. Specially the front desk people. Thank you Diego, you are the best staff in Cancun.

DO NOT BOOK. I’ve been to Mexico over 7 times. I’ve never had a terrible experience like this one and would never consider this resort again. Multiple items of mine including my phone and handbag were stolen at this resort. The manager MELLY was unhelpful and unable to provide any sort of assistance to travelers who were not from Mexico. It is very clear that this hotel is in on what the employees do. My phone was stolen I called it and a man picked up. Hotel staff including MELLY tried to tell me there were no cameras viewing the area however this was untrue. Staff was negligent and unhelpful. Any resort is honestly better than this one. Besides my phone and handbag the rooms and food were terrible. Encouraging non México residents to “drive to the police station” for an incident that happened at the hotel is outrageous. Do yourself a favor and book a hotel or resort worth your time and money. This one was not worth either. Never again

Very pleasant place to unwind. If you choose VIP then you have nothing to pay (all the food you can eat throughout the day and late at night, as well as all the drinks even alcohol, the entire fridge as well as the bar in the room is at will without any supplements and access to all restaurants for free. Swimming pool area reserved for VIPs.....) When you do the financial calculations, you are clearly a winner despite a more expensive reservation. Furthermore you are in the VIP sector so very quiet in the middle of the greenery, small three-story buildings, without elevator think about it, with jacuzzi on your terrace or garden on the ground floor. The only small negative point is that the Palace is not located in the shopping area of Cancun, so you have to take a taxi for your trips. Positive point: evenings take place every day and even evenings with a foam pool with ultra trendy music like in Ibiza where everything flows freely. In short, a wonderful stay with exceptional staff.

Stayed at this hotel in mid September for my sons first birthday and it was amazingly nice. From the cocktails, to the restaurants, and entertainment.. everything was great. I really enjoyed the Japanese and Mexican restaurant, those enchiladas were so so good!! The buffet being the least of my favorites. Unfortunately, my wife’s Pandora bracelet and wedding ring were stolen from our room but I guess that was our fault for forgetting to utilize the safe that day… PLEASE USE THE SAFE EVERY TIME YOU STEP OUT THE ROOM!!! People can’t keep their fingers to themselves. If this incident wouldn’t had happen, the trip maybe would have been a 10/10!

Second time we go and we will return without hesitation, everyone is super friendly, luxury drinks, excellent service from Luis and Tino in the sport bar

Hotel very well located, next to the bus stop and the ferry to Isla Mujeres. Pharmacy next door. Great parties. Breakfast with many options, however, lacks care. Bad Waffle machine every day. Restaurants often had no more vacancies at 8pm. Bad Mexican restaurant. Buffets in restaurants were very messy. Italian restaurant had a delicious a la carte option and perfect pistachio ice cream. The decor is ugly and strange, it looks like they wanted to do something modern about 20 years ago. The beach is not good for swimming. Beautiful pool with good temperature. Large room with a wonderful view and jacuzzi

Noisy , room smelled from sewage , service was good , food was good
Lots of vendors hassling on beach.

The hotel is nice the rooms can use a deep cleaning in my personal opinion. Beds are a bit lumpy.
Location is good you can easily Uber from the airport and around to shopping malls if needed. Hotel staff was very helpful and polite. I am vegan so my options are limited. I spoke to the chief and he was extremely nice and pointed out dishes that were vegan friendly. Also if something was needed he would prepare it. Great service.
They also have Riu Parties on certain nights of the week Neón Foam, White, and Jungle this was a nice addition from my last visit.
