"My husband and I frequently stay in the Playa del Carmen area. We were recommended to try the Riu resorts and then again to try the Palace hotels. First of all, we found the Palace to be too large for our liking...we are more comfortable in the smaller buildings with 3 storeys. Our resort did have an elevator but broken half the time. Our room looked out away from the resort to the one next door....unfortunately we were able to hear their disco at night and their daily activities programs during the day. Actually it was a minor blessing. The Riu Palaces have all their restaurants and live bands in the inner courtyard.....very loud until late at night. The restaurants themselves served good food...certainly no complaint there...the service was hit and miss...if you spoke fluent Spanish the service was very personal...otherwise adequate at best. The beach was nice but the pool left us cold...yes the water was really cold and the poolside was occupied by very loud and obstreperous drunks...certainly not a place for children. The children we did see were very bored looking...there did not seem to be a very active children's program .Our overall opinion of the Riu Palace was that for the money many of the other resorts offer much more and especially for families the Palaces are not orientated towards children and families."
