"We vacationed at Ocean Maya from December 11-20/09. Overall I would say that the Mexican people try to please but sometimes there is no pleasing anyone. The rooms were clean, the food was good and the bartenders are great. The entertainment was poor and the only true disappointment for my husband and I was the fact that you could not swim in the ocean. You could lay on the beach chairs but could only go into the two pools available. Apparently since the Hurricane, they have to rebuild the sand, etc. But once we discovered Playa del Carmen, we went in everyday. We loved it. Quaint, scenic and lots of buzz. We loved lying on the beach in Playa and visited Xel-Ha which is a "Must Do". Caution, you can only use sun tan lotion that is (bio-degradable) and they will take the ordinary stuff away until you leave the park.

Overall, we are happy to have the opportunity to go but I don't think we will stay at the Ocean Maya again due to the beach area."

"What a beautiful property! I took as many picture as I could. Service was absolutely great.
They made our stay enjoyable and unforgettable. Food was amazing: they made me to love Mexican food which I have been trying elsewhere many times and never liked it! Their efforts preparing all-mexican fiesta showed me / us how much they love their culture, cuisine and how much they wanted us to come back. And we sure will!
Everything was very clean and the grounds were well-groomed. Entertainment was great, we had a lot of fun.
Overall, excellent experience. We are very thankful!"

"Returned from our week at the Ocean Maya. Lots of 'pros' on the resort.... Wonderful vegetation and so many flowers, immaculate grounds, lots of animals and birds around, very clean, great rooms - though not everything worked in the room without a call to the desk but they corrected items right away. Buffet was excellent, lots of theme nights with entertainment and associated food, always music at night in the courtyard. The pools were great, clean and fun for kids and adults alike. Always lots going on there too. The service was very good, the hotel staff very happy to assist. The beach itself... not the water.... was great - very wide, lots of palapas and chairs and the sand was clean and lots of it.

The only negative was the water itself. First of all, there is a wall where the beach meets the water and whereas in pictures it looks like about a foot high, you cannot step over it to the water. It drops down quite a ways with rocks placed at the base in the water. There is an area to swim BUT a big raft of black weeds had floated in and the water was filled with them and black. (However, we went to the resort next door and swam there in areas where it was good.). The water was the only disappointment but they told us that the week before it had been beautiful... not their fault. People should realize that there is a wall that means you can only swim (when the weeds are gone that is) at either end of the wall.

Except for the water itself, it was great. A smaller resort than we are used to, but terrific. Lots of people were back for the second and third times, which says a lot. It's close to the airport and 4 km. from Playa del Carmen. They run a free shuttle from the resort in and out of Playa 4 times a day."

"Watch out for credit card fraud at the Dollar car rental in front of the hotel! Both I and my dad had our credit card compromised and a lot of money charged after we got back home. We are certain that the car rental guy committed the crime. This hotel is full of mosquitos and I was bitten about 100 times in 1 week. I and our entire group will not go back to this hotel nor back to Cancun for the rest of our lives. This is not a nice safe place like Hawaii. If you look at the places Mexicans live, you will understand that some of them are desperate for money and will resort to crime to get money. If you travel on the highway from Playa del Carmen to Cancun, you will see police road blocks with police equipped like combat troops with Hummvee and 50 calibre machine guns and M16s. Standing in front of jewelry stores are private security people with submachine guns. This is not a nice vacation town. It just has too many negative aspects to be considers a nice vacation spot."

"I would not recommed this hotel to anyone. I've stayed in Mexico before and enjoyed it but this place is awfull. One buffet room with people pushing, shoving and waiting on the slow service by the chiefs. The staff would not help you, the rooms smell like septic, service terrible at the bars except for one bartender. Half the time the jacuzzi in the pool wasn't working, power kept going out. The beach was dirty and rocky. Maids didn't knock before entering in the morning just walked in at 7:00. This resort is horrible. Save your money."

"The hotel was very nice, clean and well kept, the beach had been damaged by the hurricane but they were working to fix it the whole time we were there, the food was great and the view was great. The only down fall was a faulty sewer/water system out of 7 days at the resort we had no water 3 nights which was supposed to last until 7 am but alway extended upwards until noon so that was hard to plan around when having to leave the resort."

"The hotel, staff, beach, entertainment, and food are great. Our room was very clean. The beach we enjoyed as well. My only complaint is the price of pictures after swimming with the dolphins. You are not allowed to take pictures and the ones that are for sale are $150. to $650. U.S. In my opinion - very expensive. We were not told before hand the price of pictures. I didn't bring that much money with me. The price to swim with the dolphins is also $149. U.S. each. I asked the booking agent at the hotel to help me get information to get at least two pictues ($25. each). She was no help at all. A lot of double talk. So ask prices before you leave the hotel."
