My only complaint was not enough hours in the day/night. minimal tips, a bit of patience and a friendly smile will get you everything you could ever want. The Japanese Restaurant rocked. Rating: "We stayed at the Barcelo Maya Tropical Beach from December 4-12, 2008, and it was an excellent experience. The room was spotlessly clean and maintained throughout our stay, the bed was very comfortable, the turndown service was a nice touch. The grounds are not just incredible, but more like exceptional, and easy to walk. Well-manicured, never a blade of grass out of place, they had even planted pointsettias along the walkways for Christmas. They do have a trolley that runs between all the resorts, so if you don't or can't walk to the others, you can ride. The a la carte restaurants were very, very good, the Japanese and Thai being our favourites, and the buffets were also very good, probably the best I've had at an AI yet. Always a fantastic and varied selection offered each day and each meal. Staff were very friendly, we did not have any problems with the service whatsoever.
The beach was fantastic, with soft, fine white sand. A little rocky on the Tropical and Colonial side, so if you want to walk out and swim, either wear water shoes or go over to the Maya Beach/Caribe beach and swim, much better over there. Pools were fantastic, if I were a kid I think I would have considered myself in Paradise! You have access to lit tennis courts, mini-golf, pitch-and-putt, beach volleyball, bocce, sand bowling, table tennis, and that is on top of the daily activities. They also feature a full-size soccer pitch.

Rating: "I cannot say enough about this resort. I have been to the Barcelo three times, and it just keeps getting better. It is immaculate, the food is great, the staff are friendly, the nightly entertainers are very talented, and the beach/ocean is wonderful for swimming and snorkeling.
I have nothing negative to say about this resort, but do not go if you do not like walking. It is a very large resort." [...]

"I have to say that I was really excited to stay at this resort. The grounds were every bit as beautiful as the pictures you see. The buildings are beautiful. The beach is soft white sand with turquoise water. We stayed for a week with our 2 teenagers and all of us enjoyed the resort and the area. The staff were not overly friendly - especially the women - and one bartender at the pool bar (which was not overly busy) was really rude when I ordered. Weird. The housekeeping was really lacking. We had glasses left in the room from Monday to Friday (I wanted to see how long it would actually take to have them removed). Hold on to your facecloths - you will never see new ones again - I tried twice to get more, but to no avail. The fridge was to be replenished on a daily basis - it was only done when we requested it. We have stayed at Rui's before and will probably do the same again, which is too bad because this resort is really stunning.
The food was okay - quite often cold on the buffets - but the speciality restaurants were good, especially the steak house. The waiter was really good there too. The shopping mall that is on premises is really good and the prices were fair compared to going into Playa del Carmen which is just alot of the same thing. " [...]

Rating: "My husband and I spent two glorious weeks at this resort. The food was exceptional with lots of variety. The only bad thing was eating too much and having a wonderful time. Our room was always clean, the fridge always restocked and the resort staff were very charming. My husband and I never felt crowded at this resort even though it was quite large. The front desk staff were always professional and we never had to wait very long for assistance. The beach and ocean were our favourite spot during our time at the Tropical. The snorkelling was fantastic and we saw lots. Turtles, so many different variety of fish and sea plants. You didn't have to do a snorkelling excursion since you had the best view right off your beach. I would go here again in a heart beat." [...]
