"We booked this 5 star resort through Sears Canada/Transat Vacations/Cost approx Five thousand for a family of five adults. No one informed us that this resort was due to close the week we were there at the travel agent for the next SIX months before our flight! This is the second extended period of closure for this young 12 year old resort. We were told Manager of this resort fled ship two weeks prior -staff cut in half and winging it.
Closed outdoor beach bar and all restaurants mid week, ceilings in all restaurants leaked-- staff constantly having to move tables out from under water dripping. We were down to one restaurant by Thursday that closed in-between meals. Starving for food thankfully the gift shop sold Pringles chips.
No decent food/ran out/sour/foul-stuck to the pizza/pasta/fruit when available. No chance of getting sick little food to risk eating. No presentation of food that you would expect from a 5 star hotel.
No entertainment booked for outdoor theater, the sports bar was closed and events that were on the bulletin board never happened. No activities planned beyond a magician and a bit of guitar playing/small dance group-same entertainers each night in front lobby late at night.
None of the fountains were on or the waterfall over the pool bar as in the brochure.
Watching the furniture being packed away from the restaurants, vacant rooms, the saturated/gnat/mosquito infested lobby and pool loungers dragged away starting mid week was the most entertainment we had.
Entire front lobby leaking from ceiling made for wet furniture and dangerous slippery floor ( a senior slipped went backwards hit head/serious fall)
Service - rude/uninterested -all out of work in less then a week and the attitude showed. Only solution was to hand out pesos for every minute request-little English spoken by many _key_ customer service staff
There are just so many issues with this whole experience that it would be impossible to list them - instead view my pictures you know what they say.... This all from what was suppose to be a 5 star hotel
It was a grueling 7days for this family of five we could not wait to get out!

"Our family had a wonderful time at the resort. The staff were very friendly and made us feel at home. We had many great memories and lots of fabulous picture to put in our photo album. We especially enjoyed the activities which were offered to the guests at the resort not to mention the great pool as well as the spectacular beaches. I truly recommend the catamaran excursion for anyone who enjoys snorkeling and viewing many species of fish as well as the coral reefs that come alive on the ocean floor. My teenage boys enjoyed the night life including the night club where they enjoyed meeting people and dancing. The resort was well maintained on a daily basis . The maids worked very hard to keep our rooms clean and we truly enjoyed the animals created with towels for us to marvel over. We would not hesitate to come back in the near future for another stay. I recommend it to anyone who is looking to get away for a fun filled relaxing time!!!!!

"This was our first trip anywhere south so we have nothing to compare it to. It is definitely not a 5 star, more like a 4 at best. People we met there all agreeded. The food was OK, definately not up to our standards, but I was told that for Cuba it was good. Food is bland and don't eat the beef. At the International al la carte, it was like an old shoe. At the buffet, as long as it was soaking in wine it was passible. The best food was the pizza. Staff were all very nice but for a reason. Seems everyone was trying to sell you something, "Hey Mister, or Hey Friend". From palm hats, carved coconuts to cigars on the beach, everyone wanted your peso." [...]

"We've been in this lovely hotel for our 1st Wedding Anniversary and first time to stay at the Melia hotel. This hotel was neat and tidy with beautiful wall paintings at the lobby. Our room was in average size for a couple, it's been cleaned (mopped) and changed the bedsheets everyday with daily new bathtowels in different style (I mean the way it's folded) sort of a good art! Though we can tell it's a country style bedroom but we're happy for it and comfortable. Although we had a problem of the washroom during the second day of our stay, it was fixed immediately in less than half an hour. We thought that was very quick and efficient service. The food was excellant at the buffet restaurant especially with the fish, shrimps and meat that were cooked just right infront of us. We loved it and honestly, I thought I would loose weight instead I gain a little bit of just 2 pounds because I keep myself under the water swimming with some cute and lovely fish.
The management and staff were gorgeous and had excellent customer service. Our Wedding Anniversary was a terrific and real unforgetable one in our life time. During dinnner at the buffet restaurant we were served with usual friendly staff with the management around. We were surprised by an orchestra and cuban singers who played and sung a wonderful song infront of our dining table. Then, there was a delicious cake and a tossed of champagne. We did cheers for our happy and together forever marriage life! But that wasn't it! After we had dined we went to the nightly entertainment...There was a blow of another surprise when we were called to come forward on the stage before the show had started. We were given each a glass of champagne and that was another tossed for a happy anniversary. Then, we were asked to remain on the stage and we had a memorable dance with a latin music...It was great and that was all my beloved husband planned to surprise me and he did wonderfully with the best customer service of the management and staff at Melia Cayo Guillermo Resort. "The hotel was very well located on a beautiful beach. The pool was great, especially for those with small children as there were lots of shallow areas to play in. The hotel staff were helpful and friendly. The food was good by Cuban standards. The rooms were spacious and nicely decorated." [...]
