Perfect Honeymoon

We loved our stay at Galley Bay! We were there the week of March 13-19th for our honeymoon. Upon our arrival, we were greeted at the front desk and offered a cold towel which was a very nice touch. Check in was kind and easy. Javid made us some rum punch and loaded up our bags on the golf cart. He took us down the road over the lagoon to our room. We made one quick stop at the main entrance where the Teepee bar and Sea Grape restaurant is and as soon as we stepped out onto the main deck and saw the ocean we knew we made the right choice. Paradise Found! He gave us enough basic information to get us through our first evening. I must say his attitude was very welcoming and his humor was fantastic after our long travel day. We were in room 59 a lower level deluxe beachfront room. The location we thought was great because it was near the center where the teepee bar, sea grape, and pool is located, but it also was on the side towards the Gauguin restaurant which we loved (more on that later). We felt the room was everything we needed. It was large enough with a lot of closet space. It has a safe for your belongings. The bathroom was large with double sinks and a walk-in shower. The king size bed was very comfortable. We loved walking out and the ocean being maybe 30 feet away at most? The waves crashing was so tranquil to hear all day long and to wake up to every morning. We had a couple minor issues with the room when we first arrive. I suspect at least one of them was user error but we alerted guest services and they were fixed immediately. Our water in our shower did not warm up quite as much as we liked and that was fixed by the time we took our next shower. They were very attentive to any request. Our refrigerator was restocked every day. We had two wadadli beers, two cokes, two sprites, and two waters for every day.Every morning they offer “orientation” for new comers at 10am. If you have read reviews and you are interested in meeting “Captain Sean” don’t worry he will be there. We arrived on a Monday so we went to orientation on Tuesday and it was only us. That said Saturday seemed to be a big check in day and when we say the crowd on Sunday there were at least 26 or so new people listening to the very informative orientation. Jhan delivered us everything we needed to know about the Galley Bay Grounds. She also had a lot of information about offsite excursions. She will help you book anything you want from day trips via a jeep, boat trips, zip lining etc. As we talked to folks off site either in a cab or on our boat excursion everyone said oh you are at galley bay… very quiet. Galley bay is exactly that. Its calm, quiet, and very relaxing. That is not to say fun is not had. Every evening entertainment is offered. It is not a dance party but enough couples get up and dance with the nightly music that if you wish to do so you don’t feel like the only folks on the dance floor. Plenty still just sit back and enjoy it from a rocking chair. The music is close enough to the TeePee bar that you can sit there and enjoy it from the bar nightly. There are plenty of folks there that want to chat with you as well. We met a variety of couples from around the world and enjoyed their stories. You make vacation friends. You see folks at the bar, on the beach, or in the pool enough and you start enjoying conversations. If you wish to interact with others I found so many of the guest to be friendly. The water was a bit cold when you first get in but once you got your body in it was very nice! Yes the ocean can be rough. We could swim a couple times briefly with the red flag out but I would be very careful of that. One day the red flag was up all day and the ocean was very rough. I would not even attempt to go in at all. We had one wonderful green flag day and we took a kayak out for a bit. Out of the six days we were there we got in the water 5 of the 6 for at least part of the day. Every room has two snorkel sets you can use. The sand is so soft. We found walking from one end of the beach to the other fun and easy. It’s about ¾ of a mile long. Even at full capacity the beach was never too crowded. The sunsets are amazing. We went up to the teepee bar every night and got a seat to watch the sun set.The staff is fantastic. As I mentioned Javid was a wonderful first impression. My wife injured her toe (just stubbed badly in the night). Iba was so helpful and kind. We saw him every day and every day he asked how it was an made sure she had everything she needed. Truly above and beyond our expectations.Clinton walks the beach and the pool at least once a day and hands out “lollies” (wonderful popsicles” . We caught him twice. One day he had lime and strawberry the other mango and strawberry to choose from. He mentioned his idea to hand out cold towels in the same fashion and I thought that was a perfect idea as I found myself on the beach wishing I had one of those cold towels we got when we first arrived! Sharon who works at the spa was so kind. She found us at the bar and gave us an opportunity to sit in the foot massage machine they have set up at the teepee bar. It is free and so relaxing! Then of course there is Nequibe (sp?? So sorry if I am spelling her name wrong) who works the rum shack most nights she was fantastic! Her rum knowledge was great and her cocktails were fantastic! Here is a rundown of some of the bars/restaurants:Rum Shack- Opens nightly at 6pm They feature a new cocktail every day and at least 15 different rums likely closer to 20. Not just mixing rums. Some great sipping rums like English Harbour 10, El Dorado 15, and others. They have a special rum tasting every Thursday night. We made sure to go to the Rum shack every night it was never too crowded.Coffee ShopNice to be able to stop in for coffee pretty much any time. They had some pastries in the morning. We enjoyed this.Sea Grape- It’s the only real option for breakfast and it was very tasty. I loved their omelets and had them almost every day. Eggs benedict were very good too. My wife enjoyed the French toast and pancakes. If you need a quick breakfast and don’t want to put an order in they have toast, bagels, cereal, fruit, and juice all set up and open as a buffet style for everyone. They also have scrambled eggs, sausage, and bacon like this. So if you are in a hurry you can make a meal of it or augment what you order! I think we had lunch at the seagrape once and it was fine. We had dinner a couple times and I found the food to be good. I enjoyed the Thursday BBQ. They had fish, a whole hog, ribs, chicken, and steak as well as a great buffet of yummy flavors. The BBQ sauce was quite good on the ribs and chicken. Also, keep an eye our around 4 or 5 pm they put out finger sandwiches and a cookie of the day! Great Snacks.Gauguin-They are open for lunch daily with no reservation. We went to lunch a littler earlier than most 12-1pm and never had a problem getting a table. LOVED their lunch. The Creole butterfish was excellent. Their jerk chicken wings were excellent. You sit under your personal cabana with the ocean just feet away. We only ate dinner here once but it was one of our best meals. Barefoot Bar & Grill-Only ate here once (because we loved Gauguin so much!) it was nice to have this as an option. If we were there longer I would have liked to have gone more. I had Cajun fish sandwich and my wife had the quesadilla both were good. Ismay’sYes, there is an upcharge (about 42$ per person after tax etc). I do not regret trying it, but I’m glad we only went once. So you get what you pay for. The service is upscale. The food is elevated. Options like Fois Gras were included which were nice. Our mains were good but honestly I had the swordfish and I had probably better fish at Seagrape and Gauguin. We paid extra for lobster at Gauguin and we thought that lobster was a bit better than what we had at Ismays. That said the experience was great. I would say you can eat great meals at the other restaurants and enjoy your visit, but if you would like to splurge for a nice experience go ahead and go to Ismays. I would add we did not do the private beach dinner. We talked to two couples that did and they RAVED about it. SpaAWESOME. We got a couple’s massage one morning and it was the perfect start to the day. You can have it done in an air-conditioned room or in an open air cabana. It is very private and very relaxing. We were taking care of and left feeling very relaxed.PoolNo shouting this is more of a relaxing area. We never had a problem getting a couple covered chairs. The pool was never too full. We went two times during our trip and it was a nice change of pace. It is very close to the Teepee bar so that was niceTeePee BarThey put out a variety of bar snacks around 5pm. Chips and Salsa were great. Some Fried plantains one day and pretzels another. They have a large menu of drinks. We loved the Banana Slide. They will make you anything though. I enjoyed quite a few mojitos! Very friendly bar tenders. We spent a lot of time here sitting at the bar or in one of the tables surrounding it. It was a great place to meet folks. We could catch some folks coming in after their boat excursions around 230-330pm and get some information on their trips to help us decide what we wanted to do. They have croquet set up, a pool table, table tennis, tennis court, and a gym. All of which we did not use but they looked fine. We did sit in and take a nap in their wonderful hammocks by the pool one day. So relaxing! We are around 40 and found most folks were a bit older than us. Probably in mid 50-mid 60’s but there were also a few folks around our age and even some younger. As I mentioned Galley Bay is such a friendly place no one’s age mattered. Everyone was pleasant and friendly. As I said overall very happy with our stay. We’d like to come back at some point. I’ll never forget the gorgeous water and beautiful sunsets. We felt we picked a special place and we were happy about it.

The Bomb!

Beautiful, clean, calm beach. Excellent food. The nicest staff in the Caribbean. Called just to check in on us and make sure everything was ok, every day. Antigua is a beautiful island, and the residents seem to have a pleasant optimism-more so than other Caribbean islands I've been to.

Galley bay paradise

We spent 10 days at galley bay in Feb/March 2017' taking in two England cricket matches. The hotel is beautiful, set in extensive well maintained gardens, on a perfect Caribbean white sand beach lapped by crystal clear turquoise blue seasThe size of the hotel means that there were never "too many" people, and for most of the time the beach in front of our room felt like our private beach. The bars and restaurants were of high quality, and we particularly liked the rum shack for pre dinner drinks, and again the availability of facilities means that nowhere was too busy, and as a result the service was immaculate..All the staff were attentive, and nothing was too much trouble.. We will definitely return
