Just returned from a week of R & R to get prepared for the Christmas madness! This is the first time we have been to the Caribbean and our agent recommended this resort. We were willing to go anywhere but thought we would give this a try. For the most part, we enjoyed it very much. Just a few things that we both felt could have enhanced our stay even better. We had a lower level premium beachfront suite which was very comfortable. Enjoyed being able to walk out the back patio doors and directly on the beach. Would highly recommend those. The staff was very pleasant with us with a good morning, afternoon or evening every time we walked by. Sometimes a few of the girls at the teepee bar were a little put off when we asked for a specialty drink and some could make better drinks than others. I've had a mai tai from Hawaii before and the mai tai at the teepee bar would not be considered a mai tai in Hawaii. It was like drinking liquid sugar. One thing that we were very surprised about was the lack of music. Being in the Caribbean, we would have thought to hear Calypso and Reggae music everywhere. Especially at the Teepee bar and the Rum shack and maybe a softer style by the pool but there was nothing. Only a band for 2-3 hours at night and that was it. We visited 2 of the 3 restaraunts. Given we were not there for a special occasion, we could not justify the $42.88 US per person surcharge to go to Ismays. We loved the atmosphere at Gauguin's. We had 2 dinners at Seagrapes but once we tried Gauguin's we never went back to Seagrapes for dinners. Breakfast and lunches were fine at Seagrapes and Gauguins. Food was sufficient and pleasant to enjoy. They do indicate on the menu that they will not serve raw foods for health reasons. I have no problem with that however all the meats, (beef, pork and lamb) and fish were cooked beyond well done. Especially the fish. I had leg of lamb one night and to cook it well done was not enjoyable. Lamb should be at best medium-rare. I did have the west indies lamb curry one night and it was fantastic. I tried shark at the Barefoot bar and it was very tasty. The shark meat was still moist and the spicy fries were perfect for an afternoon lunch.Enjoyed a great day with Pelican Safari Tours and our driver Hensen. He took us around the island showing us all the sights and explaining the history of many of the locations. We also took a sunset tour with Captain Sean. Great afternoon of sailing along the west side of the island to a small reef for some snorkeling. It's no Molokai but it was still very nice. If you are looking for a very quiet all-inclusive resort, would recommend Galley Bay.
Absolutely loved this smaller boutique resort - a true gem!I tend to like smaller resorts and this one was just perfect for my husband and me. I generally wouldn't ever consider going back to the same resort because there are so many places to visit in the world, but I could see myself going back there! We booked through Costco travel and would book with Costco again. It was great.Rooms:We stayed in a premium beachfront suite and it was Beautiful! We loved our spacious room - highest level room down near Ismays - so it was so quiet. Our bed was very comfortable and the room itself had nice decor - maybe could use more updating but I tend to like a little rustic/boho style. Beach:Very nice! We could snorkel right off the beach in front of our room - and loved that aspect. There are kayaks and sailboats to take out - which we did almost daily! We sailed everyday. There were a few days it was very windy and they were very hesitant to let us go but we convinced them the wind was perfect for us and it was! We sailed over to the nearby cove (sunken ship in that area) and beached the boat to swim around for a while. Delightful! Restaurants:We loved the Gaugin - small individual thatch roofed areas for each couple or family - wonderful location and setting. The food was great and the service was tremendous! The Sea Grape was great as well. We really enjoyed eating breakfast there.Ismays came with our Costco Travel so we enjoyed an evening of dining there. I'm not sure if I'd pay for that being an extra charge, but the service was pretty good and dinner was good as well. Grounds:I loved the beauty of all the flora and fauna. It was stunning and very tropical. The staff did a great job keeping the grounds clean. We played tennis 3-4 times during the week and enjoyed the courts! There was a rum shack that was fun to visit and a small snack area - where they served afternoon tea/cookies - that area could use a little facelift. Overall:Would highly recommend it! Beautiful property and location. The staff was excellent and we just might return someday!
I should start by saying that after reading so many stunning reviews here our expectations were probably unrealistically high. Expecting to find something between Fantasy Island and Narnia which of course it could never be.On arrival by private transfer we were the only couple at reception, eventually after a short wait someone came out and we felt like we were an inconvenience, we were offered a drink which we gratefully said yes to upon which a couple of vans turned up and 5 couples got out, staff seem to come from everywhere and these couples were booked in, watered and transferred to their rooms by cart whilst we were still waiting for our drink ! not the best first impression. We were eventually taken to our room and if you have booked a "Superior" believe me it is anything but "Superior" although fantastically positioned on the beach the only place to hang your clothes is in the Bathroom next to the shower ,unacceptable .We did mention this to the rep and to the credit of the management we were moved to a bigger room within the hour and had not actually complained.Beware Antiguan Rustic Charm translates to dated and tired. However the beds are probably the best hotel beds i have ever slept in anywhere !The food in the Sea Grape and gaug gin was good and well presented, the staff were as in any industry varied from being friendly to not so friendly but all without exception were professionally polite and courteous, some you could engage in conversation others you could not. However, fair to say in the first week the staff at the Sea Grape were generally not "Morning people" and the evening service we found very slow waiting 45 minutes on several occasions between courses and not getting offered desserts, this we believe was down to confusion between various staff who each thought the other was serving us. The second week the resort was noticeably busier and this did improve as there seemed to be extra staff. We liked the dress code it is a nice touch and maintains standards. The grounds are impeccably maintained with an abundance of wildlife and you do get the impression that the management if not all the staff want to go that extra mile to make your holiday perfect. The pool is pleasant though when the red flag is flying on the beach which is often you are unlikely to find a lounger around the pool after 9:00a.m and have to endure that irritating habit of people rushing out to reserve beds with their towels. The jewel in Galley Bay's crown is undoubtedly the beach, stunning by any measure ,truly a beautiful setting yet its nemesis is the sea in our two weeks the green flag was flying just three timesFor us not a beach holiday if you can't go in the sea.You will however have a relaxing ,chilled holiday if you want peace and quiet. The entertainment varied from similar to listening to the organist at the Blackpool ballroom to some very good vocal artists, though it all became a bit similar in the end and age appropriate, and that kind of sums up Galley Bay for us ,nothing is in your face and nothing is too much trouble.Talking to other guests their experience would seem similar to ours though I guess those people don't post reviews. This holiday was £8000 approx $10,000 which by our budget is starting to get fairly serious money, was it value for money, absolutely not ! We realise that comparisons between resorts in different countries is like comparing Apples and Pears but frankly we have had better for less.Would we go back, no, simply because there are so many places in the world for us still to see, however despite what might seem a critical review but hopefully viewed as constructive we would recommend Galley Bay to friends and family this resort we feel it would suit.
We have recently returned from our wedding at Galley Bay Resort & Spa. It was the perfect location for our special day and honeymoon. Special thanks to Rovena & Ernestine the fantastic wedding planners who helped to make our day so special. This really is a five star plus resort amazing food and service, helpful and friendly staff who go the extra mile to make sure you have a wonderful holiday. We had a luxury beach front room which was spacious with a lovely balcony where we could relax and listen to the waves. We have lovely memories of a very speculative day and we can't wait to return.
I can't say anything about this place that hasn't been said before. Just look at all the repeat customers and how they love it. We spent an amazing 5 nights here and wish it could have been more. It was truly the most relaxing awesome vacation that I have ever taken. The resort is definitely for those looking for a quiet place to unwind but if you need some adventure there are plenty of excursions that you can book to make your time here more exciting. We only left the property for the party at Shirley Heights Sunday night and a half day sail with Captain Sean. We did learn that the property was about half full when we were there so it was even more like our own Caribbean paradise than it normally is. We're headed back to Antigua for a day during a cruise this winter and have already decided that we are coming back to Galley Bay if only for a few hours. It's that special!
