I stayed here as a result of an Aveda award. I decided to extend my stay and selected the same type of room (deluxe king with plunge pool). I called to link the reservations. When we checked in, we did not receive a room with a plunge pool nor did the receptionist say we were NOT going to receive a plunge pool. I asked for the delta in the room fares (deluxe king with plunge pool is slightly more expensive) upon checkout and was told no. They acknowledged I booked the plunge pool but said it was 'subject to availability'. I was never told this by Aveda or the hotel when I booked it. I also paid slightly more for the plunge pool room (at the time I booked, I wish I would have taken a photo of my laptop screen because they argued with me about it). I could not believe the lack of customer service where they tried to argue with me. I simply told the manager I would not be back and walked out. It was embarrassing to even stand there for as long as I did to try and prove I paid a bit more. They irritated a customer for a small sum of money. Very disappointed in the way this was handled by the manager. Now, for the rest of the stay: Overall, the hotel needs some updating. Multiple areas where things are just a bit run down and don't appear to have been as well maintained as they should be. The last full day we were there the main pool was out of service and nobody seemed to know why at the front desk and they had to check (they should know this, as we were given towels and walked right out to the pool only to see a 'closed' sign). When we were checking out the following day, it was still out of service. We decided to go to one of the beaches their shuttle takes you to - Turner Beach. This place is NOT where you want to be unless you like the typical cruise ship crowd (lots of people at once and the food is not as advertised in the little pink book at Sugar Ridge!). It is also rundown and just not a desireable place to be. We then went to The Nest. This is a much nicer beach than Turner's but there was a man selling CDs that somehow knew we were staying at Sugar Ridge. He called my husband a curse word for not buying a CD. How rude! You should NOT be subjecting your hotel guests to this nonsense - pick another beach! The food at Carmichael's, the pricier restaurant, was very good and the view is outstanding. The food at Sugar Club is not very good for the price - I would go elsewhere. There are also birds flying everywhere in the morning and one pooped on my shirt. Gross! Our room was fine, but our air conditioning unit had a problem when we first checked in and well as about mid-week. They did fix it promptly. I was able to get two free massages with my Aveda trip but my husband didn't want his, so I was hoping to just get my pedicure paid for (around $55) instead (massage would have been a $140 value). They did not accommodate this request either even though it would have cost them nothing to do so, really. All in all, the experience I had upon checkout was so irritating to me, this is why I am giving it such low marks. I travel a lot and stay at a lot of nice places and have never experienced this type of customer service from a hotel advertising itself as a high end establishment. Please invest in some customer service training for your own good and do some work on maintaining the hotel a little better.
Just returned from a 4 night stay at Sugar Ridge wher My husband was part of a conference. It is about a 30 min drive from St John's airport in th Jolly Harbour area. It is not on the beach but does offer shuttle service to two nearby beaches. We opted to visit Jolly beach at Jolly Beach resort, a short walk away. It is a beautiful, wide beach. We did no realize that it was only for guests of the resort, although no one said anything to us even though we did not have wristbands. Sugar Ridge is a small reaort built into the hills, lovely views fom the top, infinity pool and Carmichaels restaurant and bar. You can walk up but they also offer shuttle service. They fog the property twice a week however I still got mosquito bites, even using repellant at night. So if you are prone to bites you must spray throughout the day as well. Rooms are in a series of buildings which have 4 rooms each. We stayed in room 22 which was close to,the road and I did notice alot of road noise at night. So I would recommend lower numbr rooms near the pool. We had a little plunge pool on our terrace with a lounger and a table and chairs. So plenty of room to sit out and even a ceiling fan to keep cool. The interior was spacious enough, comfortable bed, mlarge closet but not enough electrical outlets and none in the bathroom! The AC unit was very quiet and cooled well. It does have an LED display which is a bit bright though. Breakfast was included for us and there was a good selection, however service was rather slow, usually about 30 min wait for eggs. They did have a self serve continental portion as well. We did dine at Carmichaels and it was lovely. Go up to watch the sunset while enjoying a delicious meal. One suggestion is to remove the citronella candles on the tables as their scent is over powering the food. Only unscented candles should be used near food. Otherwise service was excellent and crispy duck appetizer was wonderful. The staff is wonderful, helpful in making dinner reservations, quick to offer suggestions and very friendly, especially Jolee, the reservations manager and the lovely young lady who does the aquafit and other acrivities. On Monday evenings they host a Managers cocktail party with a band, fashion show and prizes. From the resort we walked to some nice restaurants for dinner, Melinis, Al Porto, Akropolis, all in the nearby plaza in Jolly Harbour, and Miracles just across the street. We also hopped on the local bus/van service which took us into St John's. $4 USD one way for 3 of us and it takes 20 min. From the bus station it is a short walk through the town to get to shops and restaurants near the port.So if you dont mind not being on the beach, this is a nice, intimate resort, good for relaxing and close to nice restaurants and lovely beaches.
We stayed at Sugar Ridge for 3 days prior to moving on to Nevis and St.kitts.The transfer to the hotel was lovely. On arrival we were greeted by lovely , helpful, cheerful staff. We had booked a room with a pool, however, we were told that due to celebrating our wedding anniversary, we were being up graded. The upgrade room didn't have a pool, and at first we must have seemed a bit put out,but on arriving at the room, we realised that this room was better, we didn't miss the pool at all. We had a bottle of bubbles in the room, as a anniversary gift from the hotel, which was a lovely gesture. We had breakfast included ,there is so much choice. The view from the restaurant, especially at breakfast time is wonderful. We found all staff to be extremely friendly and helpful throughout the stay. The transfer to the beach was good, we never found it to be a problem. The managers party is an enjoyable evening, just watch the rum punch! We couldn't find one fault with our stay.Prices are typical of a hotel in Antigua, there are steps to the rooms, but this is clearly stated in brochures etc.Thank you to Sugar Ridge for a wonderful stay.
Nice looking hotel, set at the foot of a leafy hill. Very open with nice views from the restaurant. The swimming pool could be bigger but the facilities there are great. Good gym and lovely, but pricey, spa. Very friendly staff throughout and good location for Jolly Harbour, Ffryes and Darkwood beaches. Walking distance to the many restaurants in Jolly Harbour.
After being delayed 5 hours, we arrived to sugar ridge and were welcomed by Torrey with rum punch in hand and a huge smile! He started our our trip on a good note, and helped us end on the best note! The rooms were exceptional, views superb and staff beyond kindhearted. Every question was met with an answer, and every need met with an almost instant resolution. We had breakfast included which was a great move, even though it may not have been exceptional it did the job and was tasty! Trevette and Chris were the highlights of our mornings and we were to sad to say goodbye to them! The beach transportation was a blast, and it wasn't a problem at all that the hotel was not beach front, was almost nice! On the days we didn't go to the beach, we went to the infinity pool up top and got drinks from Tony! The best decision we made was bringing food we got from the Epicurean up the road and made a day of our visit up top! The gym was exceptional, and overall the hotel was a hidden gem. Another plus for this hotel is the location in correlation to stuff around the hotel! The best food is around, and locations! Walking distance to most things, and when we got to the island we realized best beaches as well! Just grab a taxi from the airport and it is $24 for the ride. When we first arrived, we never thought we would be coming back to Antigua and thought it would be a one time visit. After our trip, the hospitality and friends we had made such as Torrey, we will be back! If you're in search of a hotel for your visit, come to Sugar Ridge! The location is one of the best on the island and staff will do whatever they can to make your visit as spectacular as ours was! And when you decide to make the best hotel choice keep your eyes open for Torrey and his smile, he will hopefully make your trip as special as he made ours! Places to eat if you stay: Miracles, castaways, Akroplois, Sheer rocks(go look at my review on their page as well, you must stop by!)
