Sugar Ridge Resort

Other reviewers have given enough description about the surroundings and the property, so I will skip that. We spent 6 days there. Our room (#53 - a hike uphill) was perfectly fine with a great view of Jolly Harbor and the coast line. The resort seems to have had better days. Common areas are pretty worn around the edges - seat cushions in the reception area are in obvious need of cleaning. This is what you notice upon arrival and first impression counts. There are two restaurants, Carmachael (high up with beautiful view) and Sugar Club. Our first dinner at Carmachael was fine. The second time, we had to wait over one hour to be served though the restaurant was far from full. Notice the menu does not change ever and there are no "specials." The food at Sugar Club is dismal. Breakfast is totally boring with mushy, tasteless bits of so-called pastries. No buffet or arrays of fresh fruits. Fruits are upon request only and limited to bananas, pineapple and melon. Mercifully we discovered some very good restaurants at the Jolly Beach marina where one can go by foot: The Crow's Nest and Al Porto - Great food, atmosphere. Sugar Ridge staff is all over the place, some competent and gracious as expected, some totally spaced out. The beach shuttle takes you to two beaches. Beach-wise, they are fine. However, the facilities at Turner's is amazingly bad with broken chairs and no service of drinks. It is overcrowded with tour groups dropped for lunch by boat. The other "The Nest/Valley Church Beach" is very good, however, we were not made aware of it until the day before our departure. We had massages at the Aveda spa which were excellent. The Internet connection is perfect. We will not recommend this resort and certainly not go back. How could this hotel have been given a "TripAdvisor Awards?" In the future I'll be suspicious about this doubtful rating what has become prevalent.
We stayed 11 nights here in April. Stayed a 5 minute trek away from the main building. We liked the walk but less able bodied may prefer to stay nearer the main building (lower numbered rooms). We had a plunge pool which we didn't use. Our room faced North so got no sun at all yet had a token sun lounger! The rooms near the main building get more sun yet are a bit noisier and less private. The food was good but a bit inconsistent. Sometimes fabulous and sometimes quite good. Normally better at quiet times. Pool up at Carmichael's was nice and quiet. Main pool's sun loungers fell victim to people claiming them with towels early in the morning. Service was really good; Tony's cocktails at Carmichael's a highlight. We also thought Orlando and Chris provided service above what we expected at the main restaurant. Nearby (5 min walk) there is a supermarket with ATM. Miracles restaurant just next to the hotel complex is also worth a visit. Overall we really enjoyed Sugar Ridge and found it very relaxing. Hope this was a helpful review!
Have never wrote any reviews, but today I feel like I need to clarify few things. Before coming to Sugar Ridge, I read all kind of reviews and saw many pictures. In reality, it became a bit different. It is located approximately 40 minutes ride from airport. It is a tough ride, and all cars are having driver on the right side (British). Upon arriving, be sure you are getting the room you have reserved. I did through Expedia, and we got placed in the room without pool, and have to fight with hotel that we want a room that we ordered. In the end we got what we wanted, but have never used a pool😊. All cottages are on the hill, and pretty much all rooms have nice view. Hotel is not on the beach, so you will not get stunning views of the sea anyways. Many people said that it is hard to go over to the room, since it is on the hill. I would say that this is not that hard. You have choice of 3 straight line roads and few steps. FOOD: The food was at times good. Portions are way too small and overpriced. We had breakfast included, but ended up spending 100-150 dollars per day on food. All inclusive is $250 per day (for 2 people). The restaurant on the beach have the same prices, and they put down you by room number. Room service cost 10 bucks more and pretty limited. I would say it is hard to get to eat something in this hotelSUN: We got terribly burned the first day. Stay away from the direct sun exposure and use sunscreen if you have white skin!!!BEACH: Stunning. Few minutes ride. You can walk if you want. They are pretty much accommodate with rides through the day. Jet ski is a main attraction on the beach.Stores and restaurants: There are few places pretty close. They have local supermarket 300 meters away.Didn’t make any excursions, but I am sure they are good.
The hotel restaurant was recommended as a great place to celebrate a friends special birthday (70th)! The location was fine but the service was poor & the food mediocre basically a disappointment there are better restaurants in the area! Not recommended!
This was our 3rd out of 4 hotels we stayed at whilst island hopping. It has lovely grounds, if you don't mind the steps. Rooms are nicely decorated with a modern bathroom. Pool areas are clean and quiet. Carleen at the pool bar and her rum punches need a special mention!! This was the only hotel we weren't all inclusive at , as we quite like trying different restaurants and there was a good selection in Jolly Harbour, which was walkable. I'm glad we weren't all inclusive if the breakfast was anything to go by- a bit of a strange set up and if you wanted continental the choice was poor compared to the other places we stayed. The nearest beach, Nest Beach was our absolute favourite , that is until the cruise ship passengers were bused there one day - then it was horrid! Overall a nice stay , but we learnt one thing by staying there - with such beautiful beaches in the Caribbean you really should stay in a hotel directly on the beach.
