Sugar Ridge Resort
- What's Included

We stayed at Sugar Ridge over Thanksgiving week. It was still quite quiet being the beginning of the season. The place grew on us as we got to know the staff. Our room was comfortable, the bed particularly so, we slept very well. It was rather dark, we were not very high up and surrounded by trees. We could just about see the sea. However we spent very little time in the room so not a major concern. The fbest restaurant is Carmichael’s which has an amazing view of Jolly Harbour, lovely waiting staff and good wholesome food. What made our stay was meeting events organizer Sandyann. She arranges walks around the surrounding area most days. Her energy and enthusiasm is infectious. She told us a lot about the island, took us to some beautiful beaches and was great company. Other notable staff the lady who runs the pool bar, so kind and bubbly and the young man at reception. I also enjoyed doing free yoga classes several mornings. Jolly Harbour is an easy walk away. The shuttle jeep service to local beaches is very convenient. It was our first visit to Antigua and to the Caribbean, we will be back.
The Sugar Ridge staff of Cherissa and Nafuna, could not have been more helpful. The Shuttle driver Javorn took extreme care to make sure that we got to our room and was familiar with the room before leaving us. The hotel is remarkable for a boutique Island hotel. Our veranda had a plunge pool. My only "complaint" is the in room coffee. I do not particularly like Nescafe' coffee, but hey, it got me from wake up to breakfast. Which brings me to one of the main reasons I am decided to write a review. Carlene, aka "momma". What a wonderful woman. Warm, kind and more than friendly. She instantly made us feel not like hotel guests, but part of her family. She learned the names of all eight of us and never had to ask twice. She used our name every time we saw her. On a special note, by the end of our stay, Carlene had two days off. The last two days of our vacation. She made a point of calling the hotel restaurant so she could say goodbye! My heart melted. She is so remarkable. When not at the restaurant, she can be found at the pool bar. She makes a mean Hawaiian ice tea. If you are looking for a Ritz or a 4 Seasons, this isn't quite what you are looking for. You have to remember, this is an island resort. The resort is beautiful. Not a bad location. Usually a short taxi ride to most areas and a shuttle to the beach. If you do stay at Sugar Ridge, if you need a cab, ask for John Henry. He and his father, also John Henry, are wonderful. The also make you feel like family. I truly wanted to bring these folks home with me. The only reason for a 4 star rating and not a 5 is some of the front desk staff need to make sure they are up to date on some events, local restaurant locations, hours and services provided. This may have been my first visit, but it will not be my last.
Being that I also work in the Hospitality industry, it was great to receive the same warm and friendly presence at Sugar Ridge. Torrey was great during Check-in and Check-out and always managed to have a smile on his face. Everyone was very helpful and accommodating during our stay. I would definitely go back, and stay longer.
I use Trip Advisor regularly and what I have come to learn is that people look at things in different ways. I'm not suggesting some of the recent reviews are not valid, but our experience was much more positive and we would definitely go back. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful and we could not have asked for more from any of them. I never heard anything but positive comments from other guests.Sugar Ridge is an excellent Boutique hotel in a good location. The rooms are simple and clean with great views and the facilities (gym and pool) are more than functional. The food is good in both restaurants (Carmichaels has a great setting), but it is not so varied that I would consider all-inclusive. Breakfasts are consistently good, if a bit limited. There are a variety of good restaurants at different budgets a short ride from the resort. Al Porto in Jolly Harbour is excellent and Sheer Rocks has a location reminiscent of The Cliff in Barbados. The hotel shuttle service to local beaches is very flexible, but you will also need taxis to get around. Ask for John Henry. The Nest is the best beach with the friendliest staff. Thank you Sugar Ridge for a great stay.
We check in to Sugar Ridge for a 2 week vacation during the last 2 weeks of July 2017. The check in was great with very polite staff and when I ask for a second rum punch there no no wait for the punch that were just delightful. The room was great very comfortable and quite large. The included breakfast was all you eat and very tasty really enjoyed it.The staff were better than great very friendly and as the days passed they felt more like family than staff we were on a first name basis with all of the them.To name a few Samantha, Sendian, Arlene Coleen, Tony and soooo many more.It was one of our best vacations every. One last point the Island of Antigua was incredible and very beautiful I wish I can get back soon.Kenneth Forbes
