We have just returned from a 2 week stay at Sugar Ridge and as the mind clears it becomes possible to write an objective review of the resort. Alot of things about Sugar Ridge are fine in fact good. The rooms are clean and serviced daily however there is a distinct lack of storage particularly draws in the rooms. The view from the rooms higher up and over looking Jolly Harbour are excellent. They are as good as i've seen from any hotel room anywhere, On the whole the staff are friendly and try to please. Special mention must go to Carleen whose work ethic and ability are exemplary. She should be promoted in order to train the rest as to what standards can be achieved. Most statt tried to help but one wondered at times whether some actually listened or in fact were interested in the person in front of them. The down side to our holiday and the biggest disappointment was Carmichael's restaurant. Given that we had booked a table based on the positive recommendations of Sugar Ridge we found the meal grossly over priced. We paid £100 for 2 gin and tonics, 3 glasses of water, 2 glasses of house wine and 2 steaks. Whilst the steaks were cooked as requested the poor lighting left us struggling to see what we were eating. We were also seated at a table that was primarily unsteady and used around the pool during the day,. It was also evident whilst trying to eat at the same time as steadying the table we had been squeezed into a corner to accommodate a large party of people who frequently walked past to access the washrooms or to have a cigarette. When questioning the cost with the restaurant manager he defensively told us he "would tell chef". We wondered why "chef"was setting the pricing policy rather than the management. We subsequently left feeling very disappointed only to be found by a more senior manager who went o to explain that "water is more expensive than rum in antigua". Do they not use water to make rum???. Not according to him! nonetheless he did promise to "make things right" . That was 3 weeks ago and HIS SILENCE IS DEAFENING. Needless to say nothing has been done. The same Manager then proceeded to ignore and not make eye contact with us for the rest of our stay ( a further 8 days ) The hotel operates a shuttle service up and down the steep hill it's built on, this is laudable, and for the first week when the hotel was quite empty it worked quite well but as more guests arrived waiting times of up to 25/30 minutes were common. Not acceptable, it smacks of under staffing and unfulfilled promises. Get it right Sugar Ridge, you have a lot going for you but the debacle that is Carmichael's and your shuttle service( not the drivers) let you down so much that we for one will not be returning and certainly not recommending.
This is our first trip the West Indies. We have a nice room but you definitely need to be on the side of the hill facing the harbor or you just have an ok place to stay. The pool is a bit small but the overall look is nice.
From the day my wife and I arrived to the day we left we never had a bad minute. All the people we met wether they were the staff at the resort or the people around the island and even at the airport were very friendly and helpful. We had a room with the plunge pool and a great vuew over the resort and the ocean. Even though the resort was not on the beach (only 4 minutes drive) it didn't matter. The room was excellent, very roomy and clean. The pool area was lovely with a pool bar and 2 pools. There was never any problems with sun beds although the resort was not full when we were there. The staff were superb and made you feel at home and nothing was too much trouble. Special mention for Carleen, Glendon and Sandyann (Socks!!) although keep out of the pool if you hear the shout of Pool Aerobics!!The food was excellent especially Carmichaels on top of the hill Special thanks to Gregory the chef. He makes a wonderful seafood pasta.
Very happy with our choice to travel to Sugar Ridge for our first anniversary. We were in bad need of some time away for some relaxation (our home island was devastated by hurricane Irma). Our goal was to leave feeling rejuvenated, and we did! We opted for the all-inclusive package as we wanted to stay as close to "home" as possible. Our room was well-appointed, with a very comfortable bed, soft robes, mini-fridge (which we chose not to have stocked), and modern bathroom. The balcony with plunge pool was lovely, and we spent a good amount of time there just enjoying the view. Note: If you're going to use your balcony pool, make sure to grab some towels from reception, as there are only bath towels in your room!We paid the additional supplement to dine at Carmichael's on our first night, and it was well worth it. The food was fabulous, and the service was too. The filet was the largest I've seen anywhere in a while, and cooked to perfection. The wine selection was decent, and not horrendously overpriced. The Sugar Club was a bit of a let-down in comparison. The food was still good, but not executed at the level we were hoping for. Eggs Benedict was just poached eggs on muffins with a dab of hollandaise. The eggs were cooked perfectly, but the lack of bacon/ham was disappointing. Other breakfast items were much better, and the continental options were very good. The Aveda Spa is closed on Sundays, but we were lucky enough to get same day bookings on the Monday. I would recommend calling ahead if you know this is something you'd like to do. The Stress-Fix massage was lovely, and lived up to its name. The Manager's Cocktail Party on Monday evening was an added treat, and it was nice to meet some of the "behind the scenes" staff. There was a steel band which carried on through the Caribbean themed buffet dinner. The staff all got involved with the evening, and it was a light-hearted, fun time.I would recommend this location to anyone who needed some time away. The staff are friendly, unobtrusive, and happy to help at any time. They made us feel very welcome, and keen to return again someday.
My husband and I recently spent 6 nights at Sugar Ridge with the Aveda program. We had a really fun time! The rooms are very nice (decorated with fresh flowers on arrival) with a great shower and a beautiful view. There is a small refrigerator and safe in the room. The balcony has a plunge pool and day bed in addition to a table & chairs. The restaurants are lovely. Open air and good food.... Loved the breakfast! Best French toast ever and lattes! The shuttle to the beach was awesome! Met some fun friends on the shuttle.... Sugar Ridge is happy to arrange side trips. A driver took us to the party at Shirley Heights (fabulous steel drum band) and another day to St Johns to shop. All the people (reception desk, housekeeping, restaurants and drivers) were very friendly and helpful. I repeat, we had a really fun time!
