Location: On spectacular Palm Beach, in the heart of the hotel zone, 20 minutes from the airport and 15 minutes to downtown Oranjestad.
Best massage I've ever had. Therapist, Maxi, is wonderful. Manager, Olga, very helpful. The food at the restaurants was good. Breakfast buffet was our favorite. The entertainment (shows) weren't very good but the live music was ok. The shops across the street are fun to browse around and shop at but don't open until late in the evening. Don't waste your time or money on a bus tour of the island, there isn't anything to see. The best thing the island has to offer is the beach and it is at your hotel. Snorkeling is great.
This was our 5 time returning to the Occidental. We had great service at the pool bar - Angela provided great service as in the poast times we have vacationed here.We had dinner on the beach and our server for both dinner and breakfast every day as Renato. He always provide service with a slime and a joke. This will keep us coming back
The Palm restaurant has the best staff in the entire island of Aruba. When you enter the restaurant, it feels like home. The staff greet you like family, especially Rino and Renato. They are the best of the best.
We just got back from the Occidental, or as I call it "The Accidental". Hands down the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. If I could give this hotel a negative star rating, I would, the only reason I gave it one is to write this review, but it doesn't even deserve that. We have been going to Aruba for years and every other hotel we have tried has been outstanding, but we decided to try this hotel based on the good reviews from other travelers. The staff we interacted with went out of their way to make it known that customer service with a smile was something you would NOT be getting. They charge for internet, which is a joke and a total waste of money, since the only place it works is the hotel lobby, which you can get for free, (but only in the lobby and only for 1 hour, per day and only on once device) So don't waste your money buying the 7 day pacakage, because you'll never get access. The majority of the time there was only one bartender at the only pool bar, so be prepared to wait for a drink for at least 5-10 minutes, and when there happened to be another bartender on duty, don't expect to be served with a smile, because it won't happen. We asked one of the bartenders (her name was Angela, who was a real Georgia peach) to wash out our glass, and we were met with such a bad attitude, which was promptly proceeded with a mumbled tirade in her native language, which was so unnececcsary, since it's her job. And we are not high maintenance people, trust me, we were very pleasant, so not sure where the attitude came from. About the food, let's just say we ate there twice for breakfast and got a bit of an upset tummy, so we ate out every night and never ate there again. Now, on to the rooms.....they are very outdated, not to mention filthy. The beds are beyond uncomfortable, and the box spring was so old it literally sagged in the middle less then one inch off the floor. I don't even want to think about what caused it to be so heavy....On to the maid service......we had money stolen, so lock up everything. We left the maids a note, in Spanish, giving them the opportunity to return it, when that didn't happen, we notified the hotel manager, Martin. Who then contacted his security officer and told him that "this takes top priority". Then to add insult to injury, the next day we came back from a day of shopping to find our hotel room door was left OPEN by the maid, who didn't pull it shut....hmmmm, coincidence? I think not. Well, we didn't hear back for 3 days, so we once again contacted security, who said to give him "3 hours" and he would get back to us...he did not, when we asked again, we were told that he had left for home 2 hours prior. When we spoke to Vincent, he said that he had a " huge stack of cases to get through", so that speaks volumes. Every time we wanted an update from Martin and he saw us coming, he immediatley put his phone to his ear and took off like a pack of wild dogs was on his tail. He was useless, as was the answer we finally received from security, which was " we have 3 maids assigned to each room, one for cleaning, one for beverages and one for linens, so when we asked them who took the money, they all denied it". Well, duh, of course they are going to deny it. Heres an idea, why don't you assign ONE maid per room, which would pretty much narrow down the culprit, don't you think? But the thing that really left a sour taste was that not ONE staff member at the hotel offered any type of apology, it would have gone a long way if someone had said, "we are so sorry for this incident, we will do our best to get to the bottom of it" but the only people who showed ANY type of outrage were the cab drivers, who are all native Arubians, they were so nice and were the only ones to show concern and they even apologized, even though they had nothing to do with our horrible experience. So bottom line is STAY away from this hotel, it's outdated, staff is horrible and customer service is not part of their repertoire.
My husband and I just returned from another trip to the Occidental/Barcelo in Aruba. The services provided to us were as wonderful as always. The staff throughout the hotel is top notch and do everything to ensure the vacation is relaxing and fun. So many of the staff work extremely hard and nothing is too much to ask. Some very noteworthy staff members are Sandra and her team in the Royal Club, Eugene the Manager of Food and Beverage, Myrna in the Asian/Hibatchi restaurant, and the many bartenders (e.g., Angela, Michael, Roddy, etc.) who take great care to offer prompt service. One extremely unfortunate occurrence at the hotel/pool/beach which needs to be mentioned and hopefully avoided in the future was the sale/hosting of approximately 90 day passes for employees of an Aruban company (no need to specifically name). The hotel was unable to control the very unruly, drunk, overbearing, and obnoxious invited guests. The hotel reserved the entire front row of lounge chairs at the pool, the very large palapala on the beach, etc. from 7am throughout the whole day. Paying hotel guests and timeshare owners were misplaced and there was not enough availability of chairs/loungers/umbrellas. The pool bathrooms were utilized as changing rooms and unavailable much of the time for the purpose in which they were designed. The group of day people were drunk and even standing on top of the bar and removing clothes. The hotel had many paying hotel guests and timeshare owners with children and the sight of this inappropriate behavior for one entire day was unnecessary and disturbing. I hope this practice is discontinued in the future because it is very unfair. The staff did their best to control the situation but their efforts were futile.Other than the one day noted above, we had a wonderful 10 days. This is the first time we experienced this situation.
