Melia Nassau Beach Resort

May 12- May 17We booked a 6 day 5 night stay at Melia Nassau Bahamas resort. We read the reviews before booking so I thought we would share our experience and opinions with all of you about staff, food, hotel, and surrounding places. We flew Delta, Friday-Wednesday. Easy flights, no issues either way for customs. At check-in we were offered to upgrade the view (not The Level) from a garden view to either a pool view (30 extra night) or ocean view (80 extra a night). We declined and we were glad we did. Depending on the pool view it can get rather loud and nothing to see. With the way the buildings are set I'm not sure what the Ocean view would look like. Because of the rave reviews I asked about The Level, however we were not eligible (I think) because we booked on Orbitz, not through Melia. We personally didn't think it was worth it, after seeing the beach area. More on service later. Also, they will run your credit card and hold 200 for incidentals. We never charged anything to the room.1st-My husband and I stayed at Sandals Jamaica about 20 years ago so we had an idea of what an "all inclusive" resort/hotel is like. I preferred Melia (pronounced Ma-Leah). Sandals tries to get groups together to play volleyball, sit together for dinner, etc. My husband and I are more private, so while people could get together and just join a beach volleyball game, no one on the staff was pushing it. We liked that. 2nd-while this is all inclusive, tipping is good. Sandals, we did not tip. So, after reading the reviews on Melia we spent about 100 dollars in tips. Less than the upgrade cost of The Level. Many reviewers complained the staff was rude and service was slow. My husband and I watched guests and this is our opinion:If you are respectful and pleasant towards the staff they will wait on people promptly. If you are respectful and pleasant and tip, they are happy and a bit faster with a spring in their step. They also will remember you the next day. We noticed the men bartend and the women cashier, wait tables, and work in the stores. If a guest is rude, inpatient, and abrasive you will wait a very long time. I don't blame the staff for this. We watched a group of four early 20 somethings (French was their first language) and one of the four was rude to many staff people. We saw this same group four times. They were ignored. Restaurants, book when you arrive. They have menus to look at as well.O'Grille is the outdoor grill. Food was great but of all the restaurants, the slowest. Limited menu. We ate there twice. The Market is buffet style for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They sit you and you go get a plate. We ate there the most. We are dairy and gluten free and ate very well for all meals. I asked for GF bread and they brought out a loaf of Udi's. They also have almond or milk smoothies made to order. Waitresses serve drinks and take your plate. Cilantro restaurant was great. Marco was our server. He explained everything in the menu and we had GF vegetable enchiladas (corn) with added shrimp. Delicious! We gave a 20 dollar tip. Aqua restaurant was great as well. We gave a 20 dollar tip and the waiter brought me GF bread as an appetizer. Very sweet.Angus restaurant, we made reservations but we cancelled. Very expensive and only one side dish we could have eaten because of dietary issues. We ordered room service. The food was free, there is a 10 dollar delivery fee. We also gave a 10 dollar tip. Food was delicious. Worth it!RoomKing bed, floor level, garden view. Bathroom and room was great. The room was cleaned every day. The bed was really comfortable. The mini fridge was stocked with 2 cans of soda, 2 beers, and 2 snacks everyday. I read in other reviews people didn't feel like that was enough. I thought it was fine. If not, go get food or drinks in a restaurant. PoolsThere is an adult pool swim up bar. Interesting the age groups. There was music and at one point the staff had bubbles going into the pool with a machine. We hung at the family pool. Much quieter. Not a lot of kids. A waitress took our drink orders and brought them to us. We tipped her as well. BeachCable Beach is incredible. There is a pier not far from the Melia and worth the walk. There is a walk way that points to the casino. The casino grounds are incredible. There are vendors walking cable beach selling cigars, drinks, and other stuff. If you decline, they are gracious. The Poop DeckWe walked two miles on Mother's Day for lunch at The Poop Deck. This is an upscale restaurant. The majority of the people there were locals. Food was incredible. Worth the walk. We took a bus back. Bus ServiceTo travel anywhere, we suggest the bus system. Bus 10 cost 1.25 each (pay at the conclusion of the bus ride). We took it to and from Nassau and then from The Poop Deck. Straw Market Didn't like Straw Market. Very pushy to sell. There are other shops as well. I was surprised by the fast food restaurants. Very Americanized. Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Burger King, etc.Rum Distillery We walked from downtown Nassau to the Distillery. Totally worth it. We had lemonade with rum. It was awesome! People were friendly. The Daiquiri ShackThe daiquiri shack is located across the street in front of the Melia. Six dollars for a small daiquiri and 10 for a large. I preferred the small kiwi and lime. My husband liked coconut, mango, and banana. There is a sign above the door, you pick up to three flavors. Made in front of you. We went twice. Two tips-I bought small spray bottles of sun screen from Amazon and face sunscreen, under 3.6 ounces. No issues getting on the plane. Used both spray bottles. You can bring an insulated mug and fill it with whatever you want for the beach. Great idea. We saw people do this. Staff will fill it with wine or mixed drink or ice water. To conclude-Nassau was beautiful and affordable. We liked Melia and felt it was worth the money. If you can be patient and kind you should have a great time. If you expect to be waited on hand and foot, tip.

My lady and I found the Melia a beautiful, clean and overall fun place to stay. The staff is wonderful ( i particularly enjoyed meeting Avard, a bartender). They are attentive, engaging and attitude free. In fact, everyone i talked to at the Melia and in downtown Nassua was this way. The rooms are clean and bright and the views spectacular. The food and drink is perfect. Don't miss out on this very good deal.
I am writing this review so I can hopefully help someone who was confused about seeing so many mixed reviews like i was! I will start off by saying we had a great time. The beach is gorgeous, the water is the most beautiful color. There is a pier a short walk down the beach which has amazing views. But, this is not a 5 star resort. You are not paying for a 5 star resort so you have to remember you will get what you pay for. The food was good at the buffets and the outdoor grille. It could have been a little more fresh but they are fine to stop in for a quick bite during the day. We went to the Mexican restaurant Cilantro and the Italian restaurant Aqua. We thought The food was very good at both places. service was a little slow, but It was nothing to ruin your time. The room was a little bare but decently clean and updated. The bathroom could have been a little more well kept. I am pretty picky about things being clean and I didn't have any major issues with anything. The drinks were a little watered down and sugary, but it has been like that at every all inclusive Ive been to. I read some reviews that there was nothing to do at night, but there are two bars in the lobby with a DJ and fun atmosphere. You can also take your drinks outside on the deck which is beautiful. One night there was a reggae beach party with a band. Overall, if you are looking for a place to relax on a great beach and have some drinks without paying a fortune, this is the place for you. If you are looking for pristine amenities and over the top services, you might want to spend a few extra bucks for another resort. Hope this helps!!
Go else where, dirty place, bugs in my room. Cold food in breakfast buffet. Unfriendly staff. Wet unsafe floors. Bad place even in though the circumstance was an emergency. I was forced to gohere by United because of a cancelled flight. I arrived late in the evening. I was given an $11 voucher for dinner. They immediately took $100 from my Amex in case I went over. I had a hamburger in my room while bugs were flying around me.It became intolerable. On the second call the housekeeping manager came and looked and immediately moved me. Same type room but no bugs. Air conditioning was very hard to regulate and reach. Overall very uncomfortable hotel experience. Multiple problems
