Bougainvillea Beach Resort

We visited Barbados during the first week of May, and tried Bougainvillea based on the positive reviews. Overall, we really liked the property and would visit again.ARRIVAL -- We arrived at the airport around 230PM. Clearing customs only took about 15 minutes. We carried our bags to the cab stand, and we in a car within a minute of getting out of the customs hall. The ride to Bougainvillea takes about 15 minutes from the airportCHECK-IN -- Check in was quick. We were upgraded to a larger suite than the one we booked, and the view was fantastic. They put a $200 hold on our card for incidentals during our 5-day visit, which ended up being just about enough to cover our expenses at hotel during the trip. They also provided a key to the balcony to lock and unlock it, but we never used it (as we were on the third floor), and never had any issues.PROPERTY -- Really a very nice property. There were many different varieties of bougainvillea bushes and trees, and all of them were in full bloom. The property is cozy but not cluttered, which makes it easy to get from your room to the pools, restaurants and beach quickly. Note that the walkways to the rooms are all on the back side of the building, and there are no elevators (we had no issues getting to our third floor room using the stairs).ROOM -- No complaints about the room. We had two AC wall units in the room, and they kept the room plenty cold as long as the patio door and windows were closed. The water is definitely safe to drink from the tap (and tastes good to boot). The included fridge and microwave made it easy to reheat leftovers from some of our meals. The patio was big enough to have a full table with chairs and two side chairs as well. POOL -- We basically live in the pool and on the beach when we travel, so having a pool bar was important to us. The pool bar definitely did not disappoint. Jose Miguel and Sonia were the two bartenders who helped us for the most part. They are both cheerful, knowledgeable and patient (some folks can get out of hand after a drink or two). One of the highlights of the day was Happy Hour. There would be no more than 4-5 folks in the pool until 3:30, but once the Happy Hour bell rang, it was like an insane cattle call. It was always very enjoyable, and we met a lot of folks each day. Most of the resort guests were from Canada, so we were able to get a few pointers on a planned visit to Banff. Very helpful!BEACH -- The beach is an easy walk from the pool (maybe 20 feet to the beach, and 100 feet to the water). It was well-maintained. We never had any issue getting a few loungers with an umbrella. I spent a lot of time swimming and snorkeling (conditions were yellow , so the water was a little cloudy). There were a few kelp beds about 150 feet out, and they had a little plant life as well as some fish, but not much else. STAFF -- I have zero complaints about the staff (and I can be a little picky). From the pool bar staff, to the housekeeping staff, to the front desk staff, everyone was very friendly and quick to help out. We never had any issue getting a taxi (on the few occasions when there wasn't one waiting out front already).RESTAURANTS -- Lanterns was not bad. We ate lunch there one day when we decided to stay on resort. There are a number of restaurants about 15 minutes walk away from the resort (near the Gap), and we enjoyed all of them we visited, especially Bliss Cafe (great for coffee and breakfast -- had the best waffle and milk shake I've ever had there). We didn't get a chance to eat at Siam, but we did have a few drinks at the bar, and they were helpful.BEER SELECTION -- One thing that is tough to find at most Caribbean resorts is decent beer selection. Typically, they only offer one or two local options. Bougainvillea didn't offer any craft beer options, but they did offer plenty of beer options in general -- Banks (of course), Heineken, Corona and Guinness. CHECK-OUT -- The only issue I had with the property was checking out. They ask that you settle your account the night before you check out. Our check out was at 545AM, so we thought settling the night before was a good idea. We visited the front desk at 10PM and were told that the books were closed for the night. When we tried to check out the next morning, it took nearly 15 minutes to go through the check out process (and the room was already paid for). The front desk staff were friendly and accommodating, but they should have had the check-out paperwork prepared. That being said, I realize it was early, and this was a very minor inconvenience that didn't sour our overall experienceOVERALL -- Again, just a fantastic resort. We did not have the AI package, and we didn't need it since we like to wander around and check out local dining options. I have stayed at other resorts in Barbados, and this was easily the best one. We will definitely be back (assuming the construction of the new Sandals doesn't impact the tranquility of the hotel).
My husband and I took this trip to celebrate our 27th wedding Anniversary. This was my second trip to Barbados and his first. He loved it!The entire staff were the nicest all together as a complete group that we have seen in a long time. The hotel overall was a very clean and friendly place. We were told these units included many time shares, and therefore most or even all of the units had complete kitchens, kitchenettes and even more. Upon arrival we were greeted with a Rum Punch Cocktail in the Foyer, a favorite in the Caribbean. Our room was ready in the 20 minutes promised. We immediately changed into our swimsuits and headed straight to the ocean to cool off. However, we both had a rough swim. The waves here on this beautiful, meticulously clean beach were huge and a bit rough. We were told by some beach staff members that prior to our arrival waves were not this bad, and could have been due to a storm out at sea. I consider myself a good swimmer, but in an effort to swim past the largest waves to get to calmer water I was bounced onto the ocean floor so hard at one point that I found a clam and sand embedded in my swimsuit. What a hard hit! I want to be truthful, and very accurate so you know what to expect, especially if you are with small children. However, I do not want to give this hotel a bad wrap. Surfing here is probably phenomenal for a surfer, and it is possible that the week after our stay the ocean could have been totally calm. We don't know!Needless to say the waves did calm slightly depending on the day, but for a completely accurate review, I have to say the ocean here on this side of the Caribbean remained rough the entire week. We truly admired the quiet, private setting of this hotel and beach. The two pools were lovely. One of the pools, with a swim up bar, had sprays of tropical flowers flowing along the pools winding shape, complete with three waterfalls within the walls of the pool.If you want to escape the overwhelming feeling of sitting at a beach or pool with just too many people seated practically on top of one another, I think you would love this place. We witnessed a beautiful beach wedding. that I will never forget. The entertainment was fun and exciting. The food was delicious! Our favorite Bartender, Jose, had a personality that literally had you singing in a group during happy hour.Barbados is a Beautiful place to vacation!
WE stayed at Bougainvillea April 2017 on an RCI exchange. We loved our visit and the location was the best. We walked to Oistens and to the gap every day. The water and beach was so nice waves were big so be careful but so much fun. Siams restaurant on site was very romantic and nice. You can walk to a small store and get super cheap beer. Staff will always get you a chair and umbrella when ever you need it. We were on the 2nd floor and had an incredible view of the water and could hear the ocean waves so peaceful.
Second time at this beach resort within 8 months . The STAFF here represent this resort from check-in to check out. We were upgraded to a junior suite with a great view of the ocean. The front desk staff were professional and work very hard to please you, especially Sue. Security were always visible throughout our stay. Entertainment was the same from our previous visit so we didn't attend .Went outside the resort for dinner and can return to see some of the shows still going on. Had dinner the first day at Siam( shrimp fried rice) which was delicious , no complaints but we over heard from other guests that they didn't like some of the food that were serve to them.We didn't eat at Lanterns this time except for breakfast on the day of our check out. Ridiculous overpriced and the previous experience was horrible with the staff but didn't encounter it this time. Housekeeping did a great job. Explore Barbados, lots of places to eat and public transportation is very cheap safe, except if you're going to a fancy dinner then a cab is the way to go.Visted Harbour lights , pick up and drop off at the hotel with all drinks and food included about ($90us) per person. Must try Just Grilling(opposite the Accra hotel) not a fancy place but the food is great for the price. Champers is great for an intimate evening, we did and love it(see separate review).Visit Oistins on Friday, had better service on our previous visit at uncle George, it was raining earlier so the water keep dripping around you when seated. Food took about one hour or more , wrong food when delivered and was out of flying fish (which I ordered). Other guests recommend Pats place so I will try it on my next visit.Overall Barbados is beautiful island . I would recommend the Bougainvillea Beach resort. (No elevator , so if you can't walk the stairs you can opt to stay on the first floor) . I love the 2nd or 3rd floor for the views.
The resort is nice, however it is dated. The road leading to the hotel is quite bumpy, and there is construction. It also floods during rain. The room is great and has a kitchen with a full oven, however the oven did not work. Not such a big deal since we used the stove top most of the time. The fire alarm is extremely sensitive! No smoke and it would still go off. The beach is beautiful, but the waves can get quite high on a windy day. Staff is very friendly!
