The hotel is simply superb and we will be returning yet again for another two weeks in May 2017. Everything is well managed, the staff are friendly, food is sumptuous, ambience is too good for words and I could not find much wrong. The hotel manager is a Canadian gentleman who is very hands on. Knows his stuff and leaves nothing to chance, His well drilled team give you anything you desire.
We stayed 2 nights and loved it. Wish the ocean had been calmer as we could only enjoy the view but still, very peaceful on our second floor balcony. We went to the gym twice and found it to be adequate. We also ordered room service for dinner both nights as we just loved the view from the balcony. We felt everyone was friendly and we had a relaxing time. Beautiful grounds!
First and foremost the staff is terrific. Everyone from the concierge, to the front desk, to the housekeeping staff and waitstaff (maybe save one) were incredibly accommodating. We've been to islands before where you get the sense that you are unwelcome. That isn't the case in Barbados and certainly isn't the case at the Fairmont. We loved the concierge staff. I typically do a lot of research and then supply the concierge with my own "recommendations" and have them work out the scheduling. However, they insisted on certain activities and restaurants and they were largely exactly right. For example, we tried to choose a dive shop that was just down the beach and they insisted on West Side scuba for our family. My wife spoke to both and came away convinced West Side was going to be so much easier to work with given our complex scuba group (2 newbies, new experienced, one too young and just along for the ride). Based on TripAdvisor reviews I was also leaning toward one catamaran cruise and they again overrode me and insisted on Good Times - - which was actually a Great Time. My seven year old came off that excursion after having gotten a ton of attention from the crew and said, "i'm glad they really liked me" - - very cute. Anyhow, Charlene and team were fantastic.The location was unbelievable. As other reviews note - probably one of the better beaches on the west coast. At the recommendation of friends we went up to Mullins Beach. We took one look and the kids asked if we could go back to "our beach". And Mullins is a perfectly nice beach. Typically the beach was calm but it was a little rougher while we were there. But it didn't keep us out.The food was surprisingly good. As also noted in reviews, the restaurant in the evenings was somewhat empty as everyone goes to all the fancy west coast restaurants. But the food here was actually very good. My 13 year old was obsessed with the pizza here that she got for lunch (every day). Maybe she's sheltered and hasn't been to NYC for a good pie - - but I'll admit, their pizza was pretty good. And I'm not sure I ever strayed from their rum punches which I concluded by the end of the trip were the best rum punches I'd had on island.The facilities are very nice. I've commented in other reviews that we very much like that classic Caribbean resort feel. While I appreciate a Four Seasons/Ritz when I'm in NYC or San Francisco, we like the more relaxed feel of places like Caneel, Curtain Bluff or The Buccaneer. I'd say this property was very similar to those which we appreciated.My only reservation is that it isn't set up perfectly for families. Maybe our Spring Break is very different than it is in the UK, but we were one of maybe two or three families at the resort. The rest were older British couples. So the property was extremely quiet. We felt guilty bringing the kids over to the pool one day when the surf was too rough. But no one complained or said anything to make us feel uncomfortable. I did very much appreciate the discounted second room. And they connect well - - including the porches which also interconnect. I know the Fairmont is kids-free for large parts of the year - - so it's clear this isn't really a family focused resort. And that makes sense given their clientele. I only mention it as it's something families should consider when they are booking. I'm not really clear where on island is a whole lot more kid friendly though - - we didn't see kids anywhere which was fairly different than other islands we've been to over the years. All that said, the kids didn't notice a thing and had a great time. So all was good and we'd highly recommend the Fairmont.
Great location on west coast. Hotel has beach which is excellent and better than majority on Barbados. Sun loungers available for all guests which is not the same with certain resort chains. Staff are so friendly and helpful, all the way from check in to room attendants and beach club staff. Particular reference to Romario at Beach Club - so helpful and genuine. Very relaxed feel to entire resort - food very good, bar in good location. Rooms are all facing sea which gives great views from morning until sunset.Best points - beach, staff and overall feel of hotel.
The Fairmont Royal Pavilion located in St James is situated on one of the best beaches in Barbados. The sea can be a little rough at times, but when this occurs there is entertainment watching the surfers. The hotel pool is superb and the hotel gardens & grounds are immaculate. Beware of the resident monkeys! Restaurant is fine with some very good food on offer and you are perfectly located to visit any number of excellent restaurants within walking distance or a short taxi ride. Rooms are well furnished but the bathrooms could do with updating. Damp shower curtains should be consigned to history! We stayed in the villa which is extremely private with a fantastic balcony and views through the gardens to the sea beyond. The only slight disadvantage of the villa is that it is rather close to the road.
