My husband and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary in Barbados and stayed at the Crane during our entire trip. We brought along our 15 month old child as well. Overall, the stay was pleasant. The grounds of the resort are very well kept and beautiful. Eating at L'azure every morning overlooking the BEAUTIFUL ocean was amazing! The breakfast was very good but I must admit that the other food was hit or miss at the other restaurants. Breakfast was definitely the meal that we most looked forward to. We stayed in the Deluxe Garden Suite that featured two bathrooms. We did have some issues with the a/c for a brief period but we did not experience any of the hot water issues that I've read other people mention. However, there was an issue with the bathtub's water not turning on at all. Usually this wouldn't concern us, but our child is too small for showers so we needed to bath him. Luckily, someone from maintenance fixed this issue. The hotel manager did a wonderful job reimbursing us for our troubles and that was greatly appreciated. The beach was gorgeous, although the waves are very rough. We only let our child play at the shore and my husband and I took turns taking enjoying the ocean. Concierge did do a great job assisting us with renting a car so we could visit the Caribbean side of the island where we could enjoy much calmer beaches. The staff was overall very friendly and helpful. All in all, we had a great stay at the Crane. As mentioned my other guests, this resort is pretty far from the action and hustle and bustle. If you are looking for that, stay elsewhere. Or rent a car if you want to enjoy a remote location but would like to get out and enjoy the crowds sometimes. Great resort!
My wife and I absolutely love The Crane. The pools, the room, the ocean view are amazing. I will definitely reccommend my friends and family to visit this piece of paradise.FYI, the honeymoon package is a steal of a deal :)
So.... We were a little nervous to book, having read both great and terrible reviews of the Crane. I am happy to report that THIS review will be a long one, and a great one - !We opted to upgrade our original booking to an oceanview room after reading multiple negatives about seemingly ongoing air-conditioning issues. Knowing that we would have the ocean breezes to cool our apartment was a little piece of mind. SO GLAD we did the upgrade - it was worth every penny.Our entire Crane experience was outstanding. After the airport taxi ($31 BD) dropped us at reception, we were greeted personally by Crane staff outside, and immediately offered glasses of the Crane's famous rum punch after being seated in the lovely reception area. What a great way to be greeted after a long day of travel. Our luggage was ported to our room free of charge while we filled out paperwork. The room itself was absolutely LOVELY!!!! We were in unit 923 - an oceanview suite with a King size bed and a pull out couch bed for our teenage daughter. The room was spotless and the space beautifully decorated. Heavenly. The kitchen had everything needed - range, oven, microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee pot, pots pans, cutlery, wine and water glasses, utensils, and a full-size fridge/freezer with an in-door ice-maker and water dispenser. Tvs in both the large living area and the huge bedroom (didn't look at either the entire stay), tons of closet space and drawers. The wifi is outstanding throughout the resort, by the way, including down at the beach! To do a grocery run, visit the concierge and have them call a taxi for you. They have a deal - a 1-hour taxi will take you to and from the Emerald City Super Centre (and wait while you shop), for $20 USD. Ask for Wayne - he's delightful!The doors and windows of our unit were louvered and all can be opened up wide - - - the cool breeze was gorgeous and balcony lounge chairs became a favourite place to have coffee and look at the gardens (beautiful) and the ocean beyond that. Our room had the feeling of an open cabana - we left our room wide open day and night. We were cool and comfortable our entire stay (and, by the way, our A/C worked perfectly, when we did decide to use it one night). A nice surprise was the in-room washer and dryer - we made use of both extensively throughout our stay, and saved us having to do laundry at home! Having two bathrooms, both with showers - was a frill that we all made excellent use of, especially as we averaged 2-3 cool showers each per day (Barbados can be HOT!!!). This is NOT a party resort. The quiet and peace of the place is delightful. The only noise at night was the sound of the ocean and the "peep, peep, peep" of frogs. Glorious. If you want to party, you can get reception to call on the ever-available on-site taxis to pop you into Oistens or the St. Lawrence Gap. During our 8-night stay, there were tons of families, which meant early bedtimes and quiet nights. :) Famiy-friendly though the resort may be, there is a gorgeous adult-only pool, so grown-ups can swim and bathe and relax without splashing, loud kids. Loved that the pools were freshwater, not salt. Nice break from the ocean.Crane Village was incredibly convenient. Located right in the resort, the village boasts a general store with everything from canned goods to soap and sundries, wine and beer to bread and cheese, a jewelry shop, a bake shop, a fun bar ("1887") with live entertainment, and a wonderful duty-free Cave Shepherd, where you can get all your gifts and souvenirs. Saved me a trip to Earthworks pottery, as they had a great selection of potted items in the shop!The beach is glorious white sand, with towel service, beach umbrellas and loungers available free for guests. The elevator down to the beach, located right by our building, #9, was a bonus! What's really fun - located immediately behind the beach in a shaded dune area is an open beach bar and café. Don't want to leave your lounger? Pop one of the yellow flags up in the sand, and a Crane staffer will come over and take your order! ice cold beer, rum punch, juices, salads, sandwiches... luxury. Beware the strong, strong waves and undertow at Crane beach. This is not ocean for leisurely snorkeling - this is ocean for wave jumping and playing in the surf. Parents of younger children - pack PFDs . I am a lifeguard and ex-competitive swimmer, and I was knocked off my feet and "rolled" under by super strong waves several times. I had a blast but weaker swimmers and children might freak out.Everywhere you go at the resort, the Crane staff greet you, wish you a good morning... its lovely. House-keeping did an excellent job and kept us in fresh towels ... We could not have had a more enjoyable stay. Broke our hearts to leave. We will be back.
Location is great. Wonderful view of the ocean. The grounds and layout are great. The various pools give many choices as to how and where you can relax (even the beach). The variety of places for a drink or snack also add to the family atmosphere of this resort. Staff are friendly and willing to help.Rooms are superb. Double vanity sets, king size bed, stove, fridge, kettle, microwave oven, utensils, cutlery are all added to make ones stay a most enjoyable one.
We're currently staying at the Crane (end of a two-week stay, in a garden pool suite).The Good: The grounds (public areas) are beautiful, cliffside, and Crane Beach is nice. At the beginning of our stay, it was *covered* in seaweed, but they worked on cleaning it up and a week into our stay it was ok to use. The beach was probably the best part of our stay - the waves are awesome, the water is gorgeous, even with the seaweed, and the waitstaff down on the beach is fantastic. We kept returning because the staff down there is awesome - the beach bar and grill is great, too. The food there is much better than the Carriage House restaurant by the pool.The Bad: This is definitely not a five-star resort. Maybe it was once, but the facilities are *tired*. The rooms are aging, which I was aware of since I'd read the reviews here. What I really didn't expect, despite reading the reviews, was the level of indifference that they seem to have here about basic service issues.First, the air conditioning... Like many other reviewers have said, the air conditioning is insufficient. Our room was HOT when we arrived and it took two days and numerous calls to the front desk to get maintenance out to look at it. The air conditioner is not an actual air conditioner, it's a "chiller" (basically a swamp cooling system), so there's no way to really cool the rooms all that well. The maintenance guy adjusted it so it would get more air flow, which dropped the temp a degree or so but there was no huge change. We lucked out and had cloudy weather and rain some of the time, which saved us - I wouldn't want to be here when it was super hot because their air conditioning isn't going to do much.Second, the private pools... I booked a garden suite with a pool specifically so we could use the pool. This is probably one of the things I was most annoyed by. We used it the night we got here but it was really gross really quickly after that. The pool water turned cloudy and the sides of the pool were covered in algae and big slugs within two days. You'd think that at a nice resort, someone would be out daily to clean the pool and put pool chemicals in it, right? I mean, you wouldn't want to leave guests with a pool that's essentially a health hazard when there are kids staying here, right? Wrong. We had to call repeatedly for maintenance to come clean the pool ourselves - and they came out with a bucket and a sponge and not much else. So they're basically washing the algae around and sweeping it off into the water. I wasn't confident the pool was usable at all, so we just stayed out of it - which pissed me off, because I paid a lot for the room.Third, the hot water... Like other people have said, the hot water will randomly go out and then you'll spend days with no hot water and make multiple calls down to the front desk to try to get maintenance to repair it. We lost it for a day, then three days, and now today we don't have it again. I've given up.Fourth, housekeeping... I feel bad complaining about this because the ladies are really, really nice. But the towel situation is kind of ridiculous for a "nice" resort. Idk if when we got here they just didn't have enough towels to go around or what but we had two for our suite when we arrived, that we had to share. We had to ask for more twice - I think the first time they brought us one, and then the second time when they cleaned they took them away and left us with two again. My husband started hiding towels under the sink in the bathroom so we'd have an extra since there are three of us here.At the pool, they also run out of towels. In the afternoon, there were several times we went and they just had no towels and/or no staff at the towel place. The staffing at the pool is also terrible - one guy walking around to take orders for all of the pool guests (with a pool that is multiple levels and huge).I'm not super high maintenance - I've traveled all over the world, and I've roughed it a bunch of times and I'm fine with roughing it. But I've also stayed in some nice resorts and if I'm paying for a nice resort, I expect the service and basic maintenance that comes with that. I'd expect this kind of stuff from a budget-level resort, and I'd shrug it off as the kind of stuff that comes with staying in a budget-level place. But this was not presented as a budget-level place, so I don't expect the number of maintenance and service-related issues that we've had.Overall, despite how much we ended up *loving* the beach itself, and the staff down there, who are great - I wouldn't recommend the Crane. There are too many other places on the island to stay, and too many other resorts to choose this one again. We'll come back to Barbados, but not to the Crane.
