Great Resort. Nice staff Only issue was A/C didnt work properly, but issue was fixed

We have stayed at the crane numerous times. The first time we stayed the A/c was not working, but we were given an upgrade due to this to compensate us. It was more than enough. (That is the only reason I give 4 instead of 5)Since then our other 2 visits were excellent. I would suggest car rental as the resort is not really located near anything other than local corner stores. The Staff was very friendly and made our stay great. The restaurant Zen was great and the food was well prepared. Staff at the restaurant were prompt and friendly. (The reason we keep going to Barbados is because the people on the island are very friendly ...and not a fake friendly like you see in Cayman Islands or Bahamas, they are genuinely friendly)The other review by Willylabradoodle states that "non-Asian servers" ..that sounds dumb. What would that matter? I am American and looks like you are too, stop going to Barbados you make decent Americans look like fools. Stay in your trailer town. He also mentioned that it was a "Disneyland fake facade buildings trying to create some kind of atmosphere of plantation days" Understand the history that Crane was first resort in Barbados. Also Barbados was a major exporter of sugar so they had a lot of plantations there. Its the islands history so stop acting entitled like if the island doesn't have a history before tourism.Another reviewer Whiney12014 states they spent $20,000 US in a week at the Crane. I have to laugh at that. You di not spend $20K at the Crane for 1 week. Especially when you describe your accommodations. You sound like a cheap person who was "Whiney" (as your name implies about price) and pinching pennies. As I said before I am American and you make American travelers look like a bunch of foolish buffoons. Stay in your trailer until you learn to act. You are a visitor in Barbados. Try to show respect.That being said don't listen to that nonsense. Barbados is one of the best islands in the Caribbean and we have been all over the world. We will stay at the Crane again and recommend it to friends. The staff was really friendly and made us feel like welcome guests and not just some tourists paying for a room. The property itself is very interesting and nice to walk around at night. No mosquitos (at least I didn't get bit). I think the breeze from the sea keeps them in check. Anyway....stay at the Crane and enjoy!

Beautiful Hotel

Would not stay here for the price but it is a beautiful place to browse if you're driving by. The view from above looking down on the beach was gorgeous. Expensive places to eat here, tennis courts, shops. They offer everthing here so you don't have to go out of the resort to do anything. If you're paying those prices to stay there it only makes sense you'd only hang out there.

Best thing is the Shower Water Pressure

Maybe we should have gone to Barbados first then St. Lucia. But it turns out flying out of Barbados to NYC to SFO was cheaper and easier. The accommodations and hospitality in St. Lucia were far superior. No matter. My husband booked the Crane. Website images looked good. Price point was more affordable than Sandy Lane. Geographically, it was "less friendly." It had accommodations for 4 of us (two adults and two teens). Entrance to property was dated and scruffy with a cheesy guard station that looked tired and not very "secure." Landscaping was full of old plants that looked over manicured and dehydrated. I didn't get an awesome feeling when we arrived --maybe because the main reception building was not obvious. We pulled up and saw some kind of luggage shed -- nothing was distinctive about our arrival.Once inside the main entrance building was the concierge with too many brochures and a monitor with a glittery home sales reel. First thing I noticed was the sofas in the lobby seating area were old and the skirt around the bottom was very soiled and discolored. The whole place looked a few decades behind the times. Time warpy.We had a one bedroom, pull out sofa plan with two baths and small kitchen. The teens had the sofa bed. The bedroom was nice size and the bathroom large with jetted tub, full shower and decent size closet. Furniture was run down and old. Horrible hard pillows. OMG. Deck furniture should have been thrown out. The Crane Village was like a bad hollywood set from another era -- with Disneyland fake facade buildings trying to create some kind of atmosphere of plantation days. I'm not sure what the theme inspiration was. I just kept noticing peeling paint. Nothing contemporary or appealing. Zen restaurant was ok but having the non-asian food servers wear Japanese robes was ridiculous. Coy fish in the water feature was weird and not in keeping with the whole island vibe. I went to the beach one time -- upon arrival. Never went back. Never got near a swimming pool. The whole property was contrived and fake-- like it was developed for Brits and northern Europeans who are desperate for sun and don't really want to deal with the local brown natives. Best thing was the staff and the shower water pressure.If you have the money, go to Sandy Lane. If you don't, pick a boutique local hotel and enjoy the authenticity of Barbados.

Very disappointing

The Crane was recommended by family members. We booked this vacation in August for our Christmas vacation and were looking very forward to it. It was very expensive but we were prepared to pay as we heard it was spectacular. From the minute we arrived we had nothing but disappointment. We were greeted by the front desk upon arrival and were asked for our credit card to pay the entire balance up front. (we had paid for 3 nights upon booking). Our confirmation had stated that balance was to be paid upon check out. This was an issue right off the start. Later that evening I went to set up the pull out bed for my son and there were no sheets to be had anywhere in the unit. I called the front desk and they told me that housekeeping had gone home for the day and there were no extra sheets or blankets anywhere in the hotel. When you are paying 20,000.00US for one week there is absolutely no excuse for no sheets to be available. The restaurants were very over priced and the service was slow and unfriendly. This was probably one of the worst vacations we have ever had. There was equipment in the gym that wasn't even working. You would think that a 5 star property would make sure all equipment is working during the busiest week of the year.This was a horrible experience and I would never recommend this property.

Beware of the Crane...

Update: January 2017: After completing an survey sent out by The Crane, I very promptly got a call from their general manager. Sean not only was very apologetic, but expressed genuine concern over the experiences we had and at least expressed a sincere plan to address these issues. On top of that, Sean insisted on issuing a partial refund for our stay, which I felt to be quite fair. Given this outreach, I thought it appropriate to include this information in the review, as it certainly helped improve my view of The Crane.(ORIGINALLY POSTED: December 2016)- Pre-arrival: emailing the concierge to secure restaurant reservations and booked excursions proved to be a painful process and yielding poor results. Delays in responses and little action resulted in our inability to get a single reservation at a place or time we had wanted.- Arrival: Rolland met us on time at airport and was fantastic. At arrival at hotel, enjoyed a delicious rum punch. Room was not ready, but after lunch room was ready and was showed room by promised check-in time. No resort tour was offered, which has been our usual experience when checking into nicer resorts.- Room Amenities: Room was nice and roomy, although seemed dated. Air conditioning was insufficient to cool room and only cooled down a couple of degrees from outside temperature. The shower only had warm water twice, never hot. Five of our showers were actually cool/cold. We did mention this to management more than once. - Room Other: The room was not made up for 4 people, even though the front desk confirmed they had all 4 of us listed. The extra bed was not made – when we called for bedding the first night after dinner, they said it would be up in 10 mins. We called several times over the next hour + with various answers, and ultimately it was almost midnight and the kids (and us) needed to go to sleep. We eventually had to tell them to just come the next day – the kids slept on the love seat and one in our bed. Nothing at all was offered as an apology. That first day we also only had 3 towels, so I used one of the wet pool towels from earlier that day. A couple of days later we were given no towels, and just a note saying they are out of towels and will deliver them when available (which eventually they did)… no towels? seriously? Also, on day-2, the guest bed in the room was still not made up (no bedding) for the kids – needed to call again to eventually get this taken care of. Also note, the resort does not have turn down service – which I would generally expect from any nicer resort / hotel charging these rates.- Resort Amenities: Pool: Pool was nice, and lounge chairs were generally available. Towels were a bit strange with towel cards – and if you asked for more than 1 towel per person/card, they were reluctant and not happy to grant that request (but eventually could be persuaded). Beach was very nice, but almost impossible to get a chair. The workers at the beach said they are about 100 chairs and 50 umbrellas short and that request was made to the hotel to fulfill the request – but management has not done anything. Totally unacceptable for a resort such as this to not have chairs for its guests at the beach that they advertise so aggressively. The Spa was also incredibly disappointing – the message was fine (not great, but passable), but there were no actual spa facilities – no showers, lockers, hot tub, sauna, nothing at all. You just changed in the actual message room. Fine if you advertise “messages available” on the website, not ok if you say you have an actual “spa” – you don’t.- Restaurants: Food was generally good, but overpriced and slightly underwhelming. Zen was the best experience – food was good and prices high, but not crazy. The food at the Bar was also decent – flatbread was pretty good. Alcohol selection was a bit poor given it is a higher end hotel. I do understand in Barbados we should expect mostly rum, and the rum drinks were good. Some restaurants on property did not even have a single bourbon outside of Jack Daniels (but this was the least of our issues). The food service around the pool was a disaster. The food itself, if you could ever get it, was actually quite good – good fish sandwiches, salads, etc. They could use more snack foods at the pool, like chips and salsa/guacamole, hummus, etc., but otherwise pretty good. Finding a waiter or waitress to take your order, however, was nearly impossible. We had to walk around the various pools, walk to the restaurant, and eventually find someone who promised to come over soon. There was only 1 person at any given time working the pool areas – totally insufficient. One afternoon it took 2 ½ hours from trying to find a waitress to getting our food! They charged us full price – unreal!!! The breakfast buffet was particularly disappointing. They had wet eggs, bacon, potatoes, beans, white & wheat bread a very basic omelet station, some very basic fruit and pastries. That is it. No ability to order from a menu. They charged $43 US per person for this. I understand $40-$50 buffets, I also know what they look like – this is definitely NOT it! To get a simple omelet I wanted, smoked salmon, I had to order room service. We got a better breakfast for ½ the price if we stayed in our room. Why should we have to stay in our room to get that? Makes no sense. - Concierge: In addition to my pre-arrival comments, in general the service was just way off. Although the woman we worked with generally seemed like a very nice person, there did not seem to be any real commitment to helping us get things setup. There was confusion and sent to the wrong restaurant one night. When we seemed frustrated, we were the one’s made to feel bad – just not what one would expect from a higher-end resort.- Overall Service: Just not good. The hotel was run poorly. Upon check-out, we were not even asked how things were or how our stay was. I was prepared to offer some feedback. Nothing. Just, “This is your new balance, ok?” At the end of the day, in the service industry, things go wrong. I understand that. But way too many things went wrong. Way too many. And, what is really telling, is how the hotel responds when things do go wrong. The Crane responded by doing absolutely nothing. Most 3-star basic hotel chains would have reacted way differently – and most definitely I would not have been charged full price for that stay. But given The Crane’s response, I can only guess that this is business as usual for the hotel. Too bad- such a pretty hotel on such a great spot on a beautiful and friendly island. Barbados in the future, likely… but, as one of our cab drivers told us several times… “not The Crane.”
