South Beach Barbados
- What's Included
I was extremely pleased with my stay at the Nautilus Beach Apartments. The ladies at the reception were very welcoming and kind. I stayed in a beach view apartment room 205. The apartment was spacious, updated renovations, fully stocked kitchen and an extremely comfortable bed. The building is a bit dated however you can't beat the price for such a cute, affordable apartment within stumbling distance of one of the best beaches in Barbados.
My friend and I stayed at the Nautilus for 10 days earlier this month, and had a pleasant experience. As mentioned in other reviews we were 'upgraded' as our original booked rooms were unavailable due to refurbishment. We had no. 12 on the first floor, overlooking Carlisle Beach which is fantastic, very clean and it was wonderful to sit on the balcony and watch the world go by!The apartment was spacious and well equipped and the air conditioning in the bedroom effective and quiet. There was a large rotating fan in the lounge area which was effective, but as we were on the end of the landing we usually left the doors open to allow a welcome through breeze. Our shower was good and we always had hot water, and the cleaning was adequate, though one of my negatives was that the room was not usually done before mid afternoon which was not really convenient as we were usually out early and back in the afternoon.Everything appeared to be in working order (though didn't put the TV on!) except the wi-fi though if I stood near the stairwell at the other end of the landing I could get a good signal, annoying as it is advertised that it was available in the room. The staff were friendly and helpful, and again the owner was around to talk directly to.The location is ideal for walking into Bridgetown( takes about 25 mins gentle pace), or it is well served by the bus services, and the bar over the road is good for basic meals and beer though there is very little else around within a reasonable walking distance if you don't want to self cater. Generally if was quiet, but due to the proximity of a local youth club and bandstand there was occasionally loud local music which I didn't find particularly annoying.I felt safe and the site seemed secure.Overall the apartment was fairly basic with no frills but suited us, however I thought it was on the expensive side .
We booked the Nautilus in September for a short 5 day stay in October. I booked a beach view room and 2 days before our arrival I was emailed that they had to change our room to a standard room due to renovations. I was told the "new room" was the same as the one I booked. We were very concerned about the renovation situation but thankfully there was no noise (it was more painting and final touches). Our original room was ok but smaller than we expected and had paid for. The next day we were moved to a new room which had been renovated and it was much more spacious. Even though they said it was renovated, overall the property is dated looking. Owner and staff very nice but very slow service to get things done and it wasn't busy. Good location if you are touring the island, right off the main road so easy access to the van No. 11 ($2 one way). We booked a 1 bedroom apartment: had a/c in bedroom but not in living room area (only a fan). Still very hot with no a/c. A/C was sufficient but not extremely powerful.24 hour security, I always sleep with a blanket but they did not have any blankets to offer (only sheets available), Wifi hit or miss (they were upgrading system so might work later on), no real grounds to speak of, TV only in living room (old style TV not plasma), 2 floors only but no elevator access, beach and sand area very clean.Major negative, there were sun-beds available but you had to drag the bed out yourself to the beach area and bring it back in at the end of the day. Not exactly restful on a vacation. I understand it's a security issue as the beach is public, but surely there is a better system than having to drag your own bed. Also no umbrellas at all provided by Nautilus or on the beach. An umbrella is definitely needed in Barbados. I ended up buying a rain umbrella just to have some cover and not burn to a crisp. I would not stay at the Nautilus again simply as it's too basic - I need a bit more pampering than lugging my own sun bed every day on vacation:)
I have to give a fair review although the Nautilus Apartments are good but we had a very poor experience last week.PositiviesLovely locationNice friendly staffNegativesWe arrived to be told that we had been upgraded because are allotted room had not been finished - so far so good!We were also told that the safe was permanently locked and the tv didn't work. What we didn't know was that:-The A/C didn't work for 7 of our 10 nightsThe hot water didn't work for 9 of our 11 daysThere was no electric kettle and the gas pressure was low so any hot water we needed took a long time and obviously couldn't provide a warm showerWifi didn't work in the room - in room Wifi promised on the internetThe 2 legs fell off the balcony table when we tried to move itWe suffered many insect bites due to the fact that we had to have the shutters open day and night to get any air into the apartment - but it was still hot. We slept badly due to the heat until the A/C worked when we slept well. The tv was only fixed on day 9 despite the problem being poor tuning. The deputy manager tried her best to get things going regarding repairs but there were always excuses of parts being required, engineers gone home etcWe asked a gentleman who was in reception if he knew who owned the apartments and he said that he did. He seemed shocked at our list of faults and did rectify some of them but we felt more in concern of his next visitors rather than us.He apologised but made no attempt to rectify our great disappointment and the fact that we were not having regular warm showers and comfortable sleep at night. Had we been American I am sure threats to sue would have been made.In all it was poor value for what we paid and we wouldn't recommend the accommodation as it was nowhere near what was advertised when we booked. We were very disappointed with our experience at Nautilus. Having seen our designated room we would have been very happy in it and didn't ask for an upgrade.
We stayed for a fortnight with our three adult Son's, we had appts 209 and 210 they overlook the car park and are on the first floor, wish we could have had a sea view but other than that the rooms were fine, dated oven gave me attitude from day one, but I did have the choice of using the other one in the smaller room, there is an interconnecting door between them so we could go back and forth, the shutters on the windows are quite prison like to me, but then we have nothing like it in the UK so I can't compare fairly, AC was a little noisy but I am an insomniac so more down to me again lol!! TV was pants but you don't go on holiday to watch TV do you? Staff were lovely, really genuine people, and the apartments are really well placed for getting around the Island either by car or by bus. The beach is in my opinion one of the best in Barbados and many local people use it on a daily basis, I am very into green issues and community focused issues at home so I was pleased that the beach for the most part was clean and that there is very good public access to Carlisle Bay/Brownes Beach, we had no A/C in our main kitchen sitting area in room 210 so we had our door open and the patio door open too so we could get a breeze through, and we heard the music from the various groups meeting at the bandstand up the road, (lot's of gospel reggae lol) and even from Harbour Lights some evenings, but this wasn't a problem for us, it made us feel like we were part of the neighbourhood!! One of the ladies on reception told me that they are working on replacing and renewing some parts in the rooms and giving everything a lick of paint this September, I hope they remember to finish the job then as our room had parts of the wardrobes that hadn't been finished with a second coat, as if someone had been called away and forgotten to back and finish the job (and they must have moved on from the job several years ago, the paintwork is very very old) but I am being pedantic as I had just redecorated all three bedrooms in our house before our holiday I was in 'fresh paint' mode hahaha!! I would stay here again, my Son's said they would like to go somewhere else, I said they can pay then!!! Husband is happy to return, hopefully in 2018!
