The good: an amazing beach, close to good breakfast places, including Bliss, Sharkey's and Happy Days, all of which serve better food for the price than the hotel. Local dinner places, including Cafe Sol and Castaways are worth a visit, as is the cafe at the Yellow Bird Hotel. The rooms here are adequate to moderately upscale, and more than workable for vacation unless you really want to spend time indoors - beds were comfortable. The in-between: parts of the public areas could be better maintained with simple fixes like paint, and better groundskeeping. Parts look rundown and understaffed. Food is overpriced but other options make that less of an issue for us. There are shuffleboard and mini golf options on site if you tire of the beach. The bad: management does not have a positive customer service attitude. After arriving with a marked 'early' check in from Jet Blue, we were given a room by the night manager, and told at some point we'd need to move - we briefly slept only to be woken by the Day manager who wanted us to move or pay 350USD for a day room - and have to move twice - the effective early check in means nothing, as confirmed by Jet Blue: note, don't take the overnight flight without planning to pay for the room for the day prior. Management blamed a 'full' hotel - clearly not the case. Same issue with a requested one hour late check out: not possible due to a full hotel - clearly not true - it may be the cheaper rooms were full and the hotel was unwilling to upgrade anyone to nicer rooms. All in all, I was left with the view that I was not a valued guest just someone to be dealt with. Admittedly, I traveled on a package from Jet Blue - but when you can make a guest happy, the choice not to is memorable. For the beach and the quality of the rooms and location, it's a 4 star. For the management, and public spaces in need of refreshing, it's a two.
We had a nice stay at the Southern Palms. We were expecting a higher quality/mid-luxury resort based on the pictures and the price, but that was not the case. We still had a wonderful stay. The location is excellent in St. Lawrence Gap. It's on the end so it's nice and quiet and a three minute walk to the center of the Gap. It's on the public beach with plenty of beach chairs. The pool also is near the beach so you get the best of both worlds. The bar and restaurant are decent if you choose to eat at the hotel. We only ate there once all week, but had a good meal. The entertainment was nice. It ranged from a Steel Pan orchestra to an "easy listening" band. The majority of the people staying at the hotel were older, more mature, retired couples. There were a few families and younger couples, but most were older. The staff was very nice and accommodating. While this wasn't what I expected, I can't complain because I really didn't spend time in the hotel. I was out and about enjoying the island, the food and the people. I probably would have spent more time in the hotel if it offered more. The hotel is a bit dated and could use some work. If you are used to brand hotels/resorts with great amenities and toiletries and are expecting this level of service, this is not the hotel for you. (You get one bar of Dial Soap if that tells you anything.) However, if you don't get caught up on that, you will have an enjoyable trip. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The bed was okay. Happy Days Café is a great breakfast option, Apsara Indian Restaurant is excellent with an incredible beach front view. I could go on... All within walking distance. I can't say this hotel will be on the top of the list of hotels to return to in Barbados, but I'll keep it in mind.
Loved my stay at Southern Palms. Excellent location. Beach amazing. Front desk staff and security friendly. Room was clean, but a little dated. I arrived prior to check-in and my room wasn't ready. I sat by the pool and within 30 minutes the desk clerk found me to inform me my room was ready. My only complaint would be the lack of information about the hotel (wifi password, restaurant hours ....) communicated at check-in. I would definitely return.
Stayed here as part of an England Cricket Tour.Wonderful position on the long beach!! Spacious ground floor room with sliding door to patio, seven paces to the beautifully maintained pool and 20 paces to the beach.... Two double beds, great shower, in room safe they wanted US $3 a day for, which is a mistake on their part. Making the safe free avoids endless hassle with things going missing, ridiculous to charge an irritating fee! What i mean by in need of a refresh is probably the management. For example, the hotel next door Infinity On the Beach Hotel seemed to have all its sun beds and sun shades set up first thing in the morning, whereas at Southern Palms the beds were all stacked up and guests helped themselves and sun shades seemed like hens teeth. Also the bar seemed to close very early. I had a snack at the Infinity and the whole place seemed more modern, lively and well run. Just feels like it needs a good shake up.
On arrival at the Southern Palms we were told we had been upgraded to a sea view room, which was totally unexpected!!The view from our balcony was breathtaking!!!The room was immaculately clean with a huge six foot wide bed, which ws very comfortable. The bathroom was adequate but could do with an update. We opted for half board and was very glad we did.Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice.Evening meal was good although rather limited in choice, and rather repetitive. The staff are all lovely and nothing was too much trouble. The pools and grounds are very well maintained and constantly being tended. The beach is beautiful and I would say the best we saw.Location is good with bars, restaurants and a convenience store on your doorstep. Most of the guests were in the older age bracket,we are in our 50`s and were some of the younger ones!!!There is evening entertainment 3 times a week and a steel orchestra on Sunday lunch times. We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay and had no complaints.Eating out can be pricey,so half board was a good move!!!
