Good stay

Located about 10 minutes walk from Brussels Central station. Staff were polite. Normally is booked full so rooms are available only by 2 pm. Breakfast is a good selection of breads, fruits etc. Has reasonable options for vegetarians as well. Rooms are decently sized for a small family. has coffee maker in the room. Free and fast wifi. Has lot of restaurants nearby. The city tax is collected at the hotel no matter though which app or website you book. Worth the stay.

front desk staff ruined the experience

We arrived in the evening on April 15. We were politely greeted by the girl at the front desk. I presented a print out of our booking information that I received from I had booked a random deal and was assigned this hotel. On my booking it said nothing about breakfast. It did NOT say it was included, it did not say it was NOT INCLUDED it made NO MENTION of breakfast. Because of this detail and because the price was a discounted price I was not expecting it to be included. However the desk clerk gave us room keys and said breakfast will be served from 6:00- (i dont remember when.) I asked- "oh is breakfast included" she paused and after looking at the computer said "yes". We were surprised - but good news. I had already booked a nice restaurant for Easter Brunch at 10:30, however I thought getting up for a hot tea and some fruit or yogurt would be nice. It was nice to be surprised again with an unexpected benefit, how lucky! We were on a trip to the Philippines in February and discovered to our surprise that the resort we booked not only included breakfast - which was clearly written on the booking details (TRAVELOCITY.COM), but that it also included a really nice dinner every night! The rest of the evening was uneventful. On easter morning I got up at 6:30 to do my swim and the doors to the pool were not unlocked promptly at opening time 7:00am ( although only a few minutes late after I telephoned the desk). I used the facility (one of the Hamaam was broken) the other was not heated until much later in the morning. I showered and returned to my room to pack and prepare for the day. I went down to have a tea and yogurt at about 8:30. My children at a hot chocolate and croissant-, my husband had tea and fruit. I urged them not to fill up because we had brunch soon. We took our baggage down stairs to be stowed until our flight later in the evening and do our room check out at about 10:00. Upon check out the morning desk clerk told us that there was an additional city tax to pay- AND asked if indeed we had eaten breakfast. I said yes. He totaled up the charges and it was something like 20 euro for 2 adults and some other charge for the kids??? I was shocked and told him that the girl at the front desk on the prior evening confirmed that breakfast was included in the rate. He confirmed it was not and proceeded to insist I pay. My husband was standing there as well and witnessed the entire exchange on both occasions. I told him to please call her and ask because I was not willing to pay that price- especially as we had only an extreemly light breakfast. I asked what the desk clerks name was from the night before. There was certainly unmistakable agitation in my tone. He then told me I was being RUDE to him and that I should not do that. AND that he would not give me the name of the employee. AND that my reservation said NOT INCLUDED so I should not have been surprised by the charge. I went on to disagree that it said nothing about breakfast and that the clerk had the print out but I could reprint it from the reservation. By this point I was exceedingly upset and flabbergasted at the condescending clerk who was on some kind of power trip. I was not about to be detained or about to be pressured into paying from something that I was told was included. I simply asked if he would call and verify that she confirmed it. He would not and continued to insist it was our fault and he would remove the charge (like he was doing a favor) but that we were in the wrong. HE WAS VERY VERY RUDE. In the end I did not have to pay more money but I did have to be dressed down in front of the entire lobby for a mistake of the hotel. There was not an appology. I told him I would be writing a trip advisor review and he said "go ahead". I have live in Europe for 7 years, and traveled extensively. This might be the rudest encounter I have ever experienced. Particularly offensive from a "hospitality" business. It is popular for hotels in Europe to roll their eyes and act like AMERICANS expect too much ( I work as a tour guide and see it all the time with employees I encounter every day). I think that this gentleman needs to find another career because his personality and attitude is simply not suitable for hospitality industry. Later when we came back to pick up our bags I was not met with a very friendly reception from the female desk clerk who was now back at work. Since I was not given any names (even after I asked) I am including the photos of the employees in hopes that some management will address these issues. The photo of the girl was not appreciated by her. However I can not identify employees with out names (is that the idea?) they did not wear name tags. This interaction may or may not be indicative of the hotel as a whole, or of the city of Brussels but I can not say strongly enough that I would not recommend this hotel. I would also discourage people from staying here. I dont know if this is a regular strategy to force breakfast sales, meaning tell people its free then charge them at check out, however it was handled ruthlessly and BUYER BEWARE! We paid a discounted price but in the end, it is unacceptable to be treated the way were were from the desk clerk - who was way out of line. I would have happily paid more money somewhere else for a little courtesy.

Good value, good location

I enjoyed a comfortable week here. The hotel is a short walk from two Metro stations (St Catherine and De Broukere) which makes it very easy to access the European institutions and business districts both East and West of the city.The Grand Place and other tourist attractions are close by, the Church of St Catherine is right behind the hotel and dozens of good restaurants and bars are just a stroll away.Breakfast is above average price for a hotel of this grade but there are numerous cafes nearby if you prefer to eat out.Bar food is surprisingly good value and very good quality, I recommend the burgers if you decide to stay in the hotel to eat.Service was good, everyone was very polite and helpful.Worth a look.

Great location

The hotel is exactly what you expect from a Novotel. Does what it says on the tin. The location is great, very close to Grand Place and some tourist attractions, not to mention around the corner from the train station.

Very convenient place

Stayed there on a short trip to Brussels. I particularly enjoyed the clean, quiet and comfortable room since I ended up being ill, and staying a night more. Staff was very understanding and helpful and all went well. Will surely go back if need be.
