It's a lovely property on a stretch of beach which is becoming choked with seaweed (you really won't want to swim on the beach). The pool is lovely. There are two dining options, both mildly disappointing. But the ceviche is good. They charge you for just about everything and have ridiculous towel-tickets. The staff were uninformative and never seemed to have a clue as to what was going on. And the mosquitos.
When we got there we had transfers and the guy that finally came to pick us up said the hotel forgot to notify them. Then when we get there they could not find our reservations and we booked through Delta Vacations so we had to call them and we showed the girl our hotel voucher. Delta was really upset with them but after 1 hour she found it. Then they took us to a room that looked like a shoe box it was so small and it had no view, we went back to the desk and told them we were booked in a Seaview Villa which was supposed to be 540sqft and have an ocean view and the girl looked and she said she could not find the reservation again so we ask for her to get someone else. This guy came and he said the room they booked you for is not available so we have to put you in another room so he took us to a much bigger room with no view so we called Delta again and they said they don't know what was going on but they were sorry and would compensate us and if the room we were in was decent and we felt comfortable in it keep it because everyone they talked to did not seem to know what they were doing. So we kept the room and it seem like just us and 6 other people were at the resort period. The grounds are beautiful and the staff needs a lot of training on how to be of service to their customers, the rooms were very outdated but clean. Then we ask one of the ladies who were cleaning up a room as we walked pass if we could see a oceanview room and she showed us but it smelled moldy and mildew so maybe that is why we did not get that room. All the furniture needs updated and some of the chairs they put out on the porches are very uncomfortable, the food was just ok and I only saw one restaurant and the beach was full of seaweeds and if you asked for something everyone was on break and they get back with you. I asked them if they all go on break at the same time and they said yes. Anyway we went on a couple of tours and we called Delta to see if we could leave 2 days earlier and they agreed. We will never come back and I feel sorry for the owner of the property they could be so much better. They weren't rude they just need some professional training. It is not good to spend the first 6 hours of your trip at the hotel trying to just get to your room when you only have 6 guest on your property.
I stayed at this hotel over New Year's Eve 2018 and while it is a beautiful facility with very friendly staff, I would not stay there again. I didn't feel that the service we received was up to the quality that I expected at an inclusive hotel at this price point. We learned more about the amenities of the place (like the available shuttle to the village) from guests staying at the hotel, than from staff. Dinner on the patio/dock was very tasty but VERY expensive for the type of food. We needed to call in for fresh towels and pillow cases multiple times during our 5 night stay. Items to note: it seems like it would be ok to walk to town, but the road has a lot of trucks. The lovely pool has a swim up bar and it looks out on the beach, but is not an infinity . This is not a comfortable beach for swimming/water access, as there is some vegetation along the shore that is hard to walk through. I spoke to the front desk about my observations and they kindly provided a bottle of wine for our inconvenience, which was appreciated.
I have been to Belize 5 times. Placencia has always been our jump point. For snorkeling, fishing, and inland adventures. The last 3 trips, we have spent at the Placencia Hotel. It's got class, great staff and the best restaurant in town. I laugh when I read not so good reviews. This place is a palace, and obviously they haven't experienced raw Belize. I'm already planning my May trip, and I will only stay at the Placencia Hotel. Safe, clean and dang good food.
Stayed as part of a group consisting of 5 rooms. We arrived first and were shown to a room that smelt of sewage ... we refused it and eventually were shown to an alternative room. We mentioned that the rest of our party were arriving the next day and asked them not to book them into the “poo”room. As there seemed some confusion as to the number of rooms we had booked and paid for (we booked months in advance) the group leader (so to speak) of our party called and spoke to the hotel twice that evening to reconfirm that there should be 4 additional rooms available the next day. We also reconfirmed this to them. The following day it appeared the hotel only had 3 rooms for the rest of the party despite the phone calls / conversations of the previous day. After literally hours of discussion the hotel finally came up with 4 rooms but offered the group (who arrived at different times during the day) the sewage room .... not once but twice !! Again, as the smell was overpowering the room was refused ... twice! Finally at 6pm that evening everyone was in a room and in need of a drink! So ..... how are the rooms? Adequate would best sum them up. A good size but tired and in need of renovation. Our room didn’t have a phone despite being given the telephone numbers of the reception, housekeeping etc etc at check in. Also, it had the holder of a hairdryer attached to the wall in the bathroom but no hairdryer? Other rooms were missing safes, irons, ironing boards and tv remote controls. It seems no room was complete with everything you would expect. Service was slow and whilst the staff try they are sadly lacking in basic hospitality training. When we tried to split the dinner bill one evening between three rooms they didn’t know how to do it. The request was initially met with surprise then by confusion and ultimately with annoyance. We waited for well over 30minutes for the bill to be sorted and in fact we had given up and gone to bed so have no idea when it was sorted. The buffet breakfast at the pier was pleasant ... we even saw some dolphins playing in the harbour one morning. However, the a la carte breakfast was seriously slow in coming. One part of our group waited 45 minutes for breakfast to come only to be left waiting for knives and forks for nearly another 10minutes by which time the food was cold. They ate it rather than send it back and wait another 45 minutes. You get the gist! Other issues - I went to reception to let them know I had laundry, remember I didn’t have a phone to call housekeeping, at 10am one morning, was assured it would be picked up and returned the next morning. When I returned to the hotel at 6pm that evening my dirty laundry was still in my room. The room next door to ours used our outside furniture for an evening meal .... not a problem as they didn’t have any furniture but the dirty dishes were still outside our room at 2pm the following day! To sum up this hotel could be so much more than it is. When a customer is told the bus into town leaves at 11am they don’t expect to wait in the car park (cars and coaches cannot get up to the actual hotel) for it to arrive 30minutes late. It’s all about training and giving people the correct information. The hotel management should be ashamed of themselves as we complained on numerous occasions they were nowhere to be seen. The hotel manager that was on site for much of our stay disappeared whenever one of our party was near. For Brits reading this ... this hotel was like Fawlty Towers just not as funny. Sadly a little updating and some proper staff training along with effective management this place could be fantastic.
