My family and I were planning a trip to Bermuda and we couldn't decide if we wanted to stay at The Reef or Fairmont so we stayed at the Reef for 2 nights and Fairmont for 3. Here is my comparison review for the two locations (Same post will go on both hotels)Beach:- Reef beach is absolutely amazing. It's a private beach and the water is very clean and beautiful beach with a restaurant right by the beach. Hands down the better option. The beach would be the reason I would go back to the Reef.- Fairmont has a beach club but it's a public beach. The beach is not nearly as nice and clean as the Reef.Pool:- Reef pool is beautiful infinity pool overlooking the ocean. But it's TINY! My 5 year old son loves the pool more than the ocean. He had fun at the pool but he much more enjoyed the larger pool at Fairmont. It's great for romantic stays but if with family, the pool might be too small.- Fairmont outdoor pool is huge and a nice kiddy pool with a little water slide. The water was great and lots of kids at the pool. Great for families.Service:- Outside of the rude, lazy, disrespectful and greedy bellman at the reef, the service was very similar at both locations. The number of staff at front desk / concierge is too little at both but the service at the restaurants are great.Restaurants:- The Reef Coconut food is just ok. Nothing amazing but not bad. But for the price, not a great value. The restaurant upstairs had a great dinner and beautiful view outside of the ocean. For sure my wife's favorite dinner. Breakfast was great specially given it was included in our hotel room.- We absolutely loved the burger joint by the pool at Fairmont. Great food with everything we tried. We also went to the Ocean Club for dinner, again, nice view and food we pretty good but not amazing.Rooms:- I personally liked the Fairmont rooms better (apparently we had the new renovated rooms) but the view of the reef was way better (we had the cliff view rooms)Activities- We didn't explore them too much but the Fairmont seems to have much more activities for kids and much more kid friendly than the reef. They have a toddler room and an activity room for older kids.Price- Both are expensive but the reef was more expensive than the fairmont. But for the price, I would have expected better service from both hotels (specially the bellman at the reef!)Overall, both were nice but the key differentiations were the beach (Reef is way better) and the pool (Fairmont is way bigger).
Great Southampton location. If you're going only for the beaches then this hotel will be hard to beat. The food is good with several gluten free options. Everything has an up-charge so just be prepared.
Stayed here for a wedding that took place at another hotel. The rooms are really nice and big. The hotel is classic fairmont on the inside. What I didn't like is how far away the beach is. It's kind of a pain to have to wait in line on a shuttle every day. Also, all the chairs at the beach were taken by 9am. The beach is way too small for the amount of people staying at both fairmont properties. The pool was also very small. The food and drinks at the beach were good and not watered down. The hotel also lost water for a few hours one day which was very annoying as we were trying to get ready for a wedding. The gym is a nice size with a beautiful view overlooking the ocean. There are multiple activities for kids and adults daily. All in all, If you want to just get up from your room and get plop yourself on the beach- this place isn't for you.
35th America's Cup through July 6th. Fairmont Southampton is superb. Resort has most every amenity imaginable, all on site. VIP welcome upon arrival. 2 connecting rooms overlooking the Great Sound. 360° views of the island. Stay here in comfort and never be bored. Plenty of choices, no need to stay elsewhere.
Disappointment in all departments of the hotel. Front desk was rude, concierge was not friendly nor helpful, the bar closed with 35 of us in it even though it was not closing time, water pressure in room was horrible, internet was extremely slow and food was just not very good. Lobby, restaurant and just the hotel in general was very old and not inviting, not what you would expect from a Fairmont Hotel. Quality of staff is poor at best. Not what I have experienced in other Fairmont's and would not stay at this one again. The island of Bermuda is beautiful, though not much to do around this hotel and better hotels that I looked at. Truly a disappointment.
