Just got back from a great trip to Bermuda. Restaurants at the Fairmont are fabulous. Shuttles not a problem and ran all the time. We were disappointed in our room as we had booked the "deluxe sea view". Our first room was #477 and you could barely see the sea at all. Mostly you could see trees and houses. We were moved to room #393 and that was better but definitely should not be considered a "deluxe" sea view room. We were there for an occasion and while the hotel and Bermuda were great, the room itself was very disappointing.
Prior to booking this trip we had done a lot of research on Trip Advisor of various hotels in Bermuda. While we were in Bermuda, we had a chance to check out several of the other hotels that we originally had picked from and it made us even happier to know we picked the best hotel. Prior to going we were really hesitant about not being right at the beach however in reality this hotel is very well located. The shuttles come so frequently, we never waited more than 5 minutes for a shuttle. The private beach is amazing. Very beautiful and clean. The hotel has lots of wonderful dining options. The best part is all of the adult guests can use the spa pool in the evenings. The only negative thing is that although room service goes to your room twice a day they do not vacuum the bathroom floor which gets the dirtiest with sand.
We returned to Bermuda 49 years after our first and memorable trip. This time at the Southampton Fairmont. At first glance, it appeared very, very nice. Beautiful landscaping, spectacular lobby. But our room balcony overlooked he largest flat roof I've ever seen, however, if we leaned out over the balcony, I think we could see the Atlantic. It was the penny pinching that we found so irritating. Breakfast started at $40 pp and that was for pancakes. Coffee another $10. Fortunately there was a Starbucks-type bar in the lower level where a pastry or bagel and coffee for two for under $25. Restaurants are plentiful but sometimes expensive with an uninspired menu. Exception was their Ocean Club on the beach, yum. Most memorable meal: bacon wrapped sea scallops on celeriac purée with a marvelous sauce with tiny sweet pearl onions. We shared this entree....getting smarter with the Fairmount's price gouging. The in room refrigerator is only for their offerings. The ice bucket was too small to be used to chill a beer or boule of wine. So we confiscated someone's champagne bucket...it worked. We also didn't realize it was a "family" resort so there were all levels of behaviors at the beach, pool and restaurants.But...the beach was stunning and the snorkeling good. Not Hawaiian good, but worth doing.
We came with family to celebrate a birthday. The flight from JFK was about an hour and fiery minutes. The hotel is by far the largest in Bermuda, about a thirty minute ride from the airport. It's got wonderful restaurants on their grounds accessible by foot or free hotel shuttles. Surprisingly though, while accommodations can be made for handicapped accessibility, this is not a truly handicapped friendly place. Beautiful grounds, including a golf course and tennis, private beach and outdoor pool, exceptionally good food in so many places that are part of the hotel's dining experience. Based on a few conversations, the restaurants not part of the resort offer some pretty wonderful food as well. Btw, food and drink are expensive. 17% service is included at the hotel's restaurants. (Check out the Modified American Plan for price comparisons.)
One of the most important aspects of any hotel is how comfortable the bed is. The bed was very comfortable. The room was very nice with an ocean view. The entire staff could not be more friendly and accommodating. The shuttle trolly to the beach easy, and we never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes. The beach was beautiful. We dined at the Ocean Club which was excellent, and Bocci which was very good. This was our first time visiting Bermuda, and we would return to this hotel.
