OverviewSurf Side Beach Club is a unique hideaway overlooking the ocean. The delightful rooms and suites are nestled into the natural cliffside terraces and gardens leading to the private beach.
Location: On the beach, 5 min from Hamilton, and 30 min from Bermuda International Airport.
We stayed here for three nights in May 2015. The hotel is in a great location, just a few bus stops away from Horseshoe Bay beach and a few stops away from Hamilton. The bus stops right in front of the hotel, which is very convenient. The hotel is pretty outdated, but we didn't go to Bermuda to stay in a hotel the whole time, so it didn't bother us. It had everything we needed and then some, the unit came with a little kitchen and was pretty spacious. The views are amazing, the hotel is on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We went down some rocks and made our way to the beach. There is also pool, but it looked a little dirty and was pretty small so we didn't go in it. Besides, who wants to spend their time at a pool when Bermuda has so many beautiful beaches. There is also a restaurant within walking distance. This hotel was one of the cheapest ones we could find in Bermuda (a very expensive place to travel to), and for the price, I think it was great. I would definitely stay here again.
We stayed here last week, the unit was up on a hill and had epic view... the unit itself was very outdated. The host was lovely and the check in was fast. I would stay here if I was on a budget as Bermuda is very very expensive.
We stayed at the Surf Side in July 2015. We had 2 rooms for 5 adults. They kindly opened the center door between the rooms and this was terrific because 2 bathrooms came in so very handy. Also it was quite convenient for communication, sharing, visiting. Each room had a bedroom with separate living room & separate small kitchen. Free wi-fi works fine in the rooms. There was plenty of closet space. Room safe in closet. Our patio had stunning ocean views and we enjoyed having our self catered breakfasts out there. There are 2 grocery stores nearby. Ask the staff for directions. Bring what you can in your checked luggage to save money. We brought coffee, sweetners, popcorn & some easy to pack snacks. Groceries are very expensive in Bermuda. 2 liters Coca Cola at supermarket was $5.39. We wished we skipped that & just got cans from the vending machine near the pool. If you like alcohol, get it at the airport when you arrive. They have decent prices. There is a small swimming pool and you can take the steps down to enjoy the ocean beach which is private and quiet. We rented scooters from nearby Elbow Beach Cycle Rentals who picked us up at the hotel & then collected the bikes from the hotel after we left. We used them to get to the more festive beach at Horseshoe Bay. We also liked Ellbow Beach for more wave action. We loved the Surf Side Beach Club for the ability to cook - the adjoining rooms - the convenient mid island location - the beautiful views - lovely grounds - and friendly staff. Still I can only give it an average rating because yes, it is very dated. I stayed there more than 20 years ago and it doesn't look like anything has been done to upgrade the property other than TAKE AWAY the hot tub. Wow,... that was disappointing! They keep the grounds very nice and the place is clean but you do see a lot of in need of repair. Our couch had a long open rip in the fabric. One of the chairs for the patio table was broken & unusable. In our kitchen, there was 1 socket. The refrigerator took up 1 plug in this socket, leaving 1 plug open. In the morning we would make a pot of coffee. Then if someone wanted to make a piece of toast they had to unplug the coffee maker. After toast was up you could hear someone holler, "PLUG THE COFFEE MAKER BACK IN!" If someone wanted to use the microwave... same deal.. unplug - replug & so on. The outlet in the bedroom was so loose plugs kept falling out. There was 3 of us in the room. 2 sharing the bedroom & 1 on the living pull out couch. We were all comfortable. However, that was too many people to charge our phones, tablets & cameras. Not enough outlets. I will say the room next door had 2 outlets in their kitchen. We found if the cookware you needed was not in your kitchen, they could usually get it for you if you asked. None of the 5 us attempted to use a TV until the last night there. Neither TV worked. Someone from the staff came & got one of them working. There is a restaurant in easy walking distance. The Swizzle Inn (South) We also called them to pick up TO GO pizza one night when we did not feel like cooking or going to a restaurant. That was convenient, but they do close the kitchen at 10pm so call ahead. The bus stop is also located at the end of the driveway. Public transit in Bermuda is easy to use and reasonable. If you have not been to Bermuda, bring a lot of money for food. The restaurants are very expensive. Our typical lunch tab for 5 people averaged $150.00. (without alcohol) We noted dinner menus could be quite a lot more - double or better - but we mostly fixed our own meals at the Surf Side because we ate lunch so late most days.Bring quarters for the soda machine & laundry - both on premises. American quarters & Bermuda quarters both work in the machines interchangeably. The staff will give you a little laundry soap if they have some but you may want to bring your own if you plan on laundry. All in all - a wonderful trip - I have to say it. I still love the Surf Side. I wish they would bring back the hot tub & I wish they had more electrical outlets, but I still love it there. And I slept so good there! The best staff person ever is Pam. We loved Pam.
What a wonderful place this probably was 20 or 30 years ago. If they invest some money and upgrade the rooms décor this place will be fabulous. Our first night we were in a room that had a lot of rust around the ceiling fixtures and bathtub area and we could not open the sliding door to the patio. This is caused by the ocean air however, Brian did come and fix the door. We then moved to a second floor unit which was much better. Again, the stove was outdated. They should also consider re-opening the bar and restaurant at least for breakfast and lunch. The only place for dinner is the Swizzle Inn up the street. So, unless you rent a scooter there are not a lot of options. The gas station down the street has a take out eatery. The Chicken Quesadilla was excellent and enough for 2 people to share as a late snack. There are no prices on anything that you purchase at the gas station so you have to continually ask the cashier.Bermuda is very expensive! Most restaurants charge $16.00 for a hamburger, but if you explore downtown Hamilton you can certainly find cheaper eats. The staff at Surf Side were very pleasant and helpful.Next time I visit perhaps I'll take the ship over from Boston so at least I can get eat for free!
The room was located up the hill, then up the stairs, down the stairs then up the stairs again - not great when hauling luggage. Room was very dated - no two sheets or pillow cases matched and furniture was dilapidated and worn. Room appeared mostly clean except for baseboard next to bed that looked like an animal had been killed there. Sliding door to balcony was stuck shut. Lovely view from room.Gas station a few blocks away for coffee and sodas; nice restaurant (Swizzle Inn) probably 1/2 mile away - within walking distance.
