Location: Across the road from the beach, 20 minutes drive from restaurants, shops, casinos and discos downtown, 20 minutes from the airport.
First the good. The food was very good and plentiful. The staff was pleasant enough. Drinks were strong. Very few were English speaking staff. The price was right. The 3 pools are small but clean. The grounds are nice. There is a tennis court, 2 pool tables, 3 small pools and entertainment. Entertainment consists of karaoke, (2 English songs from the 1950's). 1 night they showed Moana. The negatives. WiFi limited to the lobby and it was slow and spotty. Everyday you must get a new password. The room (I was in 5000 building) is a dump. The furniture would be rejected by Goodwill if you tried to give it to them. We could not control the AC. Our room was freezing. Other family members complained that their AC was not effective. Only 1 family member reported that they could control their AC. They have a safe in the room but if you want a lock it will cost you $3.00 a day. Common areas were very warm. Most windows in common area could not be opened so no breeze could get in. The island is filthy. Trash everywhere. Stray dogs all over the place. Not sure why anyone from USA would pick this island to vacation. I was there because some family members live in Colombia. The beach across the street has no shade and the hotel does not provide umbrellas. There are nicer beaches closer to main city. Used toilet paper cannot be flushed. It goes in bucket next to toilet. There are other issues as well. I don't like writing a bad review but this place needs a lot of work. It was inexpensive and there is snorkeling and good food. PS: The sink in the room tells you that the water is "not potable". They do give you a large bottle of water each day.
To do restaurant reservation for dinner is mandatory to book it at 8am but the mechanism is the bad thing here, just one person and this person takes ages for one reservation so be patience. For WiFi, well no internet around hotel places,rooms, swimming pool, etc, WiFi works only at reception and is really slow. Considering that mobile network is not good at all in San Andrés, at least hotel should offer a good internet service.
It is great for families as well as couples. It has so many areas to hangout with several pools and palm trees all over the place, a bar area, a children's area and a very wonderful restaurant... And we can not forget the the beach is literally across the Street.
I stayed at this hotel on eastern holidays for three nights. It is rustic and comfortable. My room was 3622, it was on the second floor, it had a view to the pool but didn´t have a balcony. The air conditioner was good because it has a unit for the room, The room didn´t have a phone to call the recepcionist, the hair dryer didn´t working so I complained to the receptionist the same day that I checked in, but the next day they didn´t do anything, so I had to go to receptionist like four times and then the next day the technician repaired it.The bathroom has amenities like soap, shampoo and conditioner, but I received only a pair of shampoos and two conditioners for my entirely stay The hotel has three restaurants: international restaurant (buffet), japanese restaurant (only dinner) and italian restaurant (named Pastafary, only dinner). I tried the international restaurant and italian restaurant, so I prefered the international restaurant because it has a variety of food. You have to make a reservation if you want to go to the japanese and italian restaurant.The hotel has three pools, the pool in front of the international restaurant was very relaxing.The beach is across the hotel, but the seashore is tight. If you want to go the ocean you have to wear watershoes, because it has a lot of stones on the sand and also it has an urchin.San Luis was very quiet and it is far from the city (like 25 minutes by car).
Arrived at this resort in January to first find that my room was not ready well past checkin time, and then received some confusing directions to go wait in a room upstairs. Staff were nice during this but they had clearly misplaced my reservation (which i did and prepaid through tripadvisor) I had paid a lot for this hotel ($200AUD) per night which high for the standard of the place and Colombia, but i didn't mind as it was peak season. My room however was disappointing and dilapidated but i accepted this as the bed was comfortable and the AC worked well. Then water started to leak from cracks in the roof onto my bed when it was raining. I reported this to the front desk for them to check and went out for dinner and drinks. When i returned 6 hours later they hadn't checked and the bed was soaked. They then promptly moved me to another room. The allowed me to check it first and it seemed ok so i moved, however once in the room i realized the AC only had one setting, hurricane, the toilet seat fell of when i sat on it and the TV didn't work. Rather than move again i had them fix the toilet and TV and i put up with the AC. There was also no hot water which was annoying but i wasn't risking another move. The staff involved in this part of my stay seemed to find me an annoyance, which i thought was disgraceful behavior given id been moved from one dodgy room to another dodgy room. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner in the international restaurant were nice and the staff were friendly and attentive. Other people there were behaving like pigs at a trough so if thats not your think and all inclusive hotel isn't for you. I didn't get to try the other restaurants as i they were always booked out and i only found out on the last day you have to line up at 8am to reserve them. The drinks that i had at the bars were nice and strong, and the staff friendly. The snack bar was ok, pretty low grade stuff but ok for a snack. You can only use the wifi in the reception area and you have to get a code from an office thats down a corridor away from reception. Only one code per room per day so if you have multiple devices bad luck. mobile reception around that part of the island was terrible so if you stay here expect to be cut off from the world for a few days, which maybe isnt so bad, but in 2017 the wifi system and procedure at this hotel is a disgrace. When i checked out i was informed i didnt have an airport transfer and the hotel staff were commandeering every taxi that went past. The staff member running the show just pointed for me to stand aside and continued to hail taxis and load other people in front of me. After approaching the point where i would miss my flight i asked a local guy what to do and proceeded to walk up the road away from the hotel to hail a cab. Shared one with a couple who were in the same situation. In hindsight it was a good way to end my stay as it reminded me how little the staff at Decameron cared about me. I'm sorry i inconvenienced them by paying $1000 to stay at their hostel in disguise. 60+ reviews on TripAdvisor and this first one star i have given, truly deserved and well earned by Decameron San Louis.
