Really good visit

Its a resort so expect lots of people, loud music at pool and kids. Being a high end Marriott member, I expect these things but the particular week we were there it was very manageable. I highly recommend spending most of your time at the pool but not ordering food/drinks down there. Visit the 8Och restaurant to get your drinks to go. Much better service and drinks. Hopefully you will get the pleasure of having Hugo and Luis or Christian wait on you in 8Och. Really good people. They have a pool bar but was hit and miss on who was working if you got good service, never a miss at 8Och. Had 2 really good meals at the golf restaurant 18 and Green, if you go, be sure to try it.Again, really good people. Thank you to the management for being so cooperative with our accommodations. When you see my name, you will know what I mean. Rhonda and I thank you.

We'd go back again!

My wife and I enjoy traveling and our trip to Costa Rica was no exception. We booked a room with an ocean view and were completely satisfied with it. The housekeeping did a great job each day, the bed was very comfortable as were the sheets and pillows. The towels were big and nice. The pool was amazing. We never had a problem finding shade and a perfect spot to sit by it. The beach was not good but the grounds and pool area more than made up for it. There were people swimming in the ocean but compared to the pool we didn't choose to do so.One of our favorites was their over-the-top breakfast buffet. Just the month before we had taken a cruise to Hawaii and noticed the fresh fruit in Costa Rica at this hotel was far superior! Lots of eating choices and they custom made eggs any way we wanted them! Coffee was very good, too. This is a beautiful hotel and the staff were all very friendly. We both agree that this was one of our best vacations, ever! Be sure and go Zip-Lining nearby, that was amazing, too!

Great luxury resort in Costa Rica

I went with family for a week using my Marriott points (I am a very frequent customer). Property is excellent, Highlight is one of the best pools I have ever seen in a resort. Food and service is what you would expect from a top-end Marriott Resort, consistently high quality. Prices are not economical, similar to what you would see in a US resort, but nothing too excessive. The manager, Oliver, is a very competent and pleasant executive who helped resolve a health issue we briefly had to face. From the hotel you have a number of great excursions including Manuel Antonio national park and Tortuga Island The hotel can arrange all of these for you and organization was also excellent. Well done to the staff of this great resort!

Not becoming a Marriott fan

I stayed here with a relative who is a Marriott member (and I assume was getting a deal), though I can't say this place sold me on becoming one.Let's start with the worst part: design. With the exception of the main lobby veranda and the pool, which is a beautiful labyrinth that covers the whole property, this place is outdate. It's Middle-America's idea of world class. The ladies spa facility is not luxe. It's ugly, fluorescent and feels like you're in a cramped timeshare with creaky, heavily-weighted doors to the showers, toilets, jacuzzi and lounges. The dry sauna wasn't heated at all one day. The women's jacuzzi overlooks a tennis court, so you have to be clothed to enjoy it. It's also made of jagged, broken stones that cut your skin. Towels are scarce. The spa staff and services were great though! The hotel rooms themselves are without any style and none of them have balconies where you can sit and enjoy the view. The website falsely states that they do.That said, all bartenders, room service and wait staff were wonderful to us. The breakfast buffet was good. The pool has a bizarre rule about returning your towels before 6PM. There is a pleasant faux-beach grove made of white sand and trees that separates the pool from the real beach and it's somewhat nice. The beach itself is made of volcanic sand, which forms a mud that is not very clean. This is located by a marina that is great for fishing, but little else. Some locals come to fish and enjoy the beach and there is a strip of chill cantinas and restaurants nearby that are enjoyable, mostly frequented by expats. You have to shuttle to them after dark and save your driver's card to get back to the hotel. Never walk the beach at night.Marriott offers no shuttle pick up from any airport. Taxis remain on the property though. Also, the travel company that Marriott partners with for all excursions and adventures from the hotel is called TAM. Beware. They are garbage. They take PayPal payments, but do not keep records or receipts of of them. DO NOT BOOK ANYTHING VIA TAM. They are scammy. In fact, there is an air of pyramid schemes and hustling surrounding the whole property. The land around the hotel is all ugly condos cutting into the jungle. Real estate offices are located inside the hotel itself, which is gross. I'm not yet sold on staying here again or at any other Marriott "resort". When I return to Costa Rica, it will be somewhere else.

Wonderful

Wonderful hotel. The staff is probably the friendliest staff we have ever encountered. The grounds are immaculate, the pool fabulous! The breakfast buffet at Hacienda was awesome as well as the coffee. Food at the hotel is great and the portions for lunch out by the pool were huge, great for sharing. Our room was okay, bed okay - super clean and comfortable, but for the price, I was expecting WOW. We had a basic room, so maybe one of the high priced rooms were better. It really didn't matter much though since we were rarely in our room. There is about a 10 minute walk to the marina next door where there are a number of restaurants as well as a little store tucked away on the waterfront where you can buy small groceries and deli meats and pasta salad, etc. Restaurants here are pricy, but good. We ate at El Galeon and the Italian rest. There are vendors soliciting excursions on the beach which we did not buy from - were told not to trust them. We did find Piko travel which I would highly recommend who booked all our excursions and gave us some helpful tips. As far as the beach, it is pretty much black mud. Apparently this is common in CR. It really didn't matter as the pool area overlooks the ocean and walking on the beach was still doable - just wear shoes, there are a lot of rocks on CR beaches. Do take a trip to Tortuga Island - well worth the day and time - again through Piko Travel.
