Los Suenos Marriott
- What's Included
We arranged travel ahead of time (Transruiz) to get from the airport to the hotel ($100 one way). We had debated on renting a car and are thankful we did not. We would have been lost, driving is different in Costa Rica, and we got to sit back and take everything in.You are greeted by friendly people everyone you come to the hotel. Very clean and well maintained hotel! Even though we were in Costa Rica, we did not see any critters (other than lizards hanging around outside) inside the hotel. A short taxi ride to many different places including Jaco for shopping, dining, and excursions. Very family friendly hotel, but was still good for just us two adults.Even being a Marriott elite member, breakfast is not included and is a bit pricey. It is served at Hacienda Kitchen. If you want to save a few bucks (and still have plenty of food) – you have the option of doing the ‘healthy buffet’ for breakfast. It is around $20 per person. Included are danishes, pastries, fruits, cheeses, and lunch meats. You have the option of doing the full breakfast buffet for about $40 per person. This includes the healthy buffet in addition to lots of hot items with some local flare. There is also a made to order omelet station with this option. They have a breakfast menu to order from as well.We ate at all of the restaurants and they were delicious with wonderful employees. 18 & Green was a bit pricey but with delicious food. The sea bass was perfectly seasoned; the steak melted in your mouth. Service here was average. Bar Ocho made the best cocktails I have ever had! Their service was well above standard with employees who went out of their way to great you and remember you from night to night. We had a burger here that was good. The next night we had sliders that were wonderfully delicious. Pick the sliders over the burger! We did sushi one night and it was delicious as well! Please be sure you know what kind of beach you are getting here. It is not a sandy beach, but more of a ‘mud’ beach. We knew this going there, so it was not an issue for us. There is a pretty walk over to the Marina. Make sure you don’t just stop at the first building, there is more if you keep going. Up further there are shops and a little café.We did not find the people at the travel/excursions desk very helpful and booked all of our fun things on our own. Luckily I had done my homework (thanks tripadvisor!) and knew in advance what we wanted to do and the companies to use. I am confused why I could book my own ATV/Zip lining adventure but the desk told me I could not book ATV through them. And it was stated in a dismissive, not helpful manner. I believe this is an independent company, so will not hold it against the hotel. The people at the taxi desk were very helpful. The drivers were great! All the drivers we had spoke English well, and would give us little tips along the way. You could purchase a ride one way or round trip. We generally did the round trip option. Getting picked back up was easy. The pool area was great. You check out towels and there are plenty of chairs. Servers come around if you need a drink or food. There is also a swim up bar (pricey – but to be expected). The yoga was a bit loud, but the pool area is large enough, you can move away if you like.Great stay, wonderful people, well maintained resort. We will stay again.
We had a great time. The arrival experience was the best I've had at any Marriott. The staff went out of their way to make our stay special and start it off well. The views of the ocean and rainforest at this location are spectacular, but if you are planning to go to the beach rather than see the ocean, you may be happier elsewhere. Every morning we saw scarlet macaws in the trees by the ocean. Iguanas strolled the pool area. It was a tropical paradise. The huge pool area is made up of many smaller pools that are interconnected. This allowed for some level of privacy and quiet even when the pool area was full. As others have mentioned, we found many better options for tours. Using Swiss Travel, we went on the same tour offered by TAM at the hotel (literally, they picked us up together using the same bus/guide), but for 75% of the cost. We used Piko for ground transport and were very happy with the service and cost. The food we had at the resort was great, but as others noted, very pricey. We really enjoyed the restaurants at the Los Suenos Marina, which were a 10 minute walk away. The food was very good, there were some great views of the marina, and the prices were much better. We also found a local place with great food at very low prices - Soda Iguana Pacific. We had a breakfast and lunch there and enjoyed both. It was a walk from the resort, so it may not be for everyone, but we found it nice to look at nature while walking and they made the best casados we had in Cost Rica. The staff at the Marriott was attentive to any requests. The bell staff were great to talk to and helpful with ideas. The bar staff at the pool was quite friendly.
While I usually check for the kinds of things we like to do on vacation, I didn't do a very thorough job. The Marriott is clean and the grounds are lovely. The pool (the pools) is extensive and well kept but while the property is on the beach, the beach is not terribly nice and not really great for swimming. There are no waves and the water is murky. The only scuba for my husband turned out to be two hours away. This is also a family destination which makes it noisy, not that that's a bad thing but we would have preferred something a bit more relaxing and quiet. The consierge desk was less than helpful but fortunately, in going back to read some reviews on this site, I discovered PIKO Travel, a young independent willing and able to help us make our vacation memorable. We were able to see CR from a more local perspective. The food at this resort has been good but it is also very expensive. The local currency is the colon but not necessary as US dollars are accepted.Overall, a pleasant experience but doubt we'll return.
We booked 4 nights at this hotel for relaxation at the end of 2 weeks traveling around the amazing Costa Rica. We are generally not 'resort' people but have stayed in various other resorts through out the world so we know what to expect. Firstly, the hotel interior is tired and could go with some freshening up. Secondly, I was baffled that when collecting your pool towel they take your room number and you are told to return it by 6pm even though the pool is opened later. I don't think people pay $250 plus a night to steal towels!! Thirdly, the pool area is not relaxing, for 3 out of our 4 days we ended up beside someone who insisted talking all day on his phone very loudly (I think he followed us around). On one of the days other guests complained as it was just extremely annoying not to mention inconsiderate and rude. The manager came down and laughed and joked with the man and left. I think it would be helpful to have a sign asking guests to be considerate of other guest and refrain from talking loudly on your phone for long periods. Finally, empty cups were left around the pool area for long periods of time. The pool area is nice and we made the best of our stay but I would find it hard to recommend this hotel for the price.
I love spending my time in Los sueños with my family, besides having a beautiful area it has very friendly staff. We come here maybe 15 times or more a year for 4 years now of how much we liked this place. This time is was very different, due to poor service in our stay. Last night a $10 chifrijo was delivered to my room by room service which I only took two spoons (the pork and beans tasted sour and acid) and left i left it outside (no one even called to ask why it was the plate still full in the cart) I spent the whole night puking due to food poison; I called in the morning to put a complain but all I was told was: "We will file a complain" to which I agreed nicely and understanding even though my night and my family's was ruined by the incident. When I am finally able to change and go downstairs with my family to the breakfast restaurant, as I am still feeling bad I decided to grab a couple of bites of fruit... to my surprise when I grab the second berry from my plate the berries had white mold on it.Besides that the pastries were old and stale, most of the food was pale and extremely greasy (more than usual). Very frustrated about the situation and in disgust I went to the lobby to complain once again but again nothing was truly done. Honestly after spending so much money, time and references to this place it feels terrible how little care they put into this very serious matter. I can say I wasted my money for last night's room and food. Karina Oriol (449)
