Our Opinion
Great views and great value can be found at this resort. It is set on a hill with steep stairs to and from the pool and restaurants, but there is a shuttle that goes around the resort every few minutes for those who want to use it. Pool area is nice. Black sand beach is unique.

The world renowned Occidental hotel chain has done it again in Costa Rica. The lovely 300 room Occidental Allegro Papagayo all-inclusive hotel in one of the most beautiful areas of the Papagayo Gulfs, an area of great natural beauty and a favourite hotel for Canadians.
Location: On the Gulf of Papagayo on Manzanillo Beach, 30 min to the city of Liberia, 25 min from the airport.

Some Good Some Bad - Especially Food

Well this review may come 10 years late but we are going back to Costa Rica next year (not here though) and I thought I'd read reviews to see if this place has changed...doesn't look like it. We stayed here for a week and there were pros and cons. Pros - Monkeys are great to see, the tides are really neat how far they go out, the beach is white sand vs black sand on other side of bay. Can walk a long ways along shore during LOW TIDE (get back before tide comes in though!) Rooms were clean and staff friendly. Went on excursion by Four Seasons side...little white sand beach exclusive to Allegro Papagayo...amazing snorkelling, great beach and eatery. Cons - Food - blech! I was sick immediately and for the next 6 days. The grease/oil they used? I'm not sure. Only think I could eat were buns with packaged butter and sometime lettuce for salad. (Wasn't sick day we ate at the other beach off site.) Food wasn't kept well and has specific times to 'line up' and eat...they rang a dinner bell like a cow bell...was funny to watch people rush to line up and some were very rude in line, pushing and shoving to get in! Snack bar was old food under heat lamp that was oily and greasy and just sat there from after lunch until dinner.Very 'Americanized' is how I described this resort as it doesn't really make you feel you are in a beautiful oasis of a country. With the greasy food, nastiness in the pool and dirty areas, it's like Spring Break Mexico at a cheap resort. Yes, it is hilly hands down! If you have mobility issues be sure to get a room close to lower level. I enjoyed the walking but yes, was out of breath and in such high humidity you have to be careful. They did have refillable water bottle stations which was a plus!I missed a few trips because I was sick much of the time, I just couldn't find anything to eat that didn't upset my stomach, was all very greasy. We ate at one of the reservation restaurants one night...they had great food..fine cheeses etc...after 6 days of not eating, gorging out on that food was blissful until the next day! System wasn't used to good food at that point!Any place in Costa Rica is beautiful and people are friendly. There will be various forms of wildlife/insects but that is also the beauty of it all! The only main complaint I had was FOOD. You need to eat good to keep your healthy up especially when in foreign country where water sources and spices are different. I've been to many destinations and the #1 vacation spoiler would be the food...if it's not good quality - kept at right temperatures and fresh...your vacation is done. Resorts need to focus on this as the prime issue to remedy and ensure it's 10/10. Second are the rooms, which last time we were there they were good, comfortable and clean.

Loved Costa Rica and the people

This is a very average resort and we did not stay at the resort for even a full day as we were on excursions deep sea fishing, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Arenal. The people were very nice and we loved Costa rica and have recommend it to many of our friends.

Staff hid our stuff in the ceiling, stole camera from someone else!

My boyfriend and I stayed here, it was our first trip to Costa Rica. The resort overall was nice until the last day. We were departing in the evening so we packed our stuff that morning and kept it in the room until it was time to leave. We bummed around the resort until it was time to leave. Much to our dismay, when we got to the room our luggage was GONE!!! We checked with the front desk and they never moved. Panic ensued as out passports and EVERYTHING was in our luggage!!!! We are so lucky that my boyfriend had great attention to detail because he noticed dust on the bathroom sink that wasn't there that morning. He climbed on the counter and pushed up the ceiling and OUR LUGGAGE WAS IN THE CEILING!!!!!!! Staff had put it up there and thought what!? They could come back later and steal it?!?! It was SO SKETCHY! We told someone on the bus to the airport about this and they had their $1,500 CAMERA STOLEN from their room!!! This place was beautiful but so beyond sketchy. DO NOT STAY HERE!

You get what you pay for

This place is not all bad- I want to start with that. The night shows are fun to watch and are very well done. The monkeys and black sand beach was really cool. The food here was more north american and did not use as much cilantro as other places- we thought that a good thing. There are a lot of hills though and the rides were not as punctual or reliable as required. Our room had bugs on the floor at night- nothing worse then hearing and feeling the crunch under your foot we stepped on them Also, the bathrooms by the pool are not cleaned frequently enough and are really gross. I was unimpressed with the food when I had a piece of glass in it at the Mexican restaurant. The glass in my food is teh number one reason why I was not impressed- it really made me feel like this place was just not a clean and health conscious place.

Great resort very private

This resort was perfect for my 5 day stay and I enjoyed my time here. The staff were all very friendly and the pool and swim up bar were super nice. I enjoyed the monkeys on the grounds and feeding them daily. The volcanic sand was a first for me as well. Overall, it was a great stay and I would love to return...
