Four of us, two couples, spent a week in upgraded First Club suites. The pictures of the resort make it look quite spectacular. Unfortunately, the service and quality provided is only skin-deep. We also tried two eco-tours scheduled through the resort and were quite disappointed. It was our first visit to Costa Rica and it will probably be our last.
My wife and I choose Costa Rica for our honeymoon for many reasons. When our travel agent presented this property, we immediately knew as the photos were amazing. Once we arrived, we immediately knew we were in paradise as the view immediately as you step into the lobby is breathtaking. We did have to wait a few hours to get into our room, but there is plenty of exploring to do that will help pass that time. Once we were able to go to our room, we were completely satisfied with the room. Ours was spacious, comfortable and a picture perfect view from the balcony. The room came with a stocked mini bar, the tey keep it stocked as well. There are 3 restaurants, pool bar and a beach bar. The food in all the restaurants was more than we expected, especially The Italian restaurant. The pool bar food was perfect for a light lunch or snack and some great drinks. One evening after dinner, the manager even jumped into a golf cart to give us a ride to our room. He was a really nice guy. Overall the staff was friendly and extremely helpful. They all helped create an amazing honeymoon for my wife and I.
The personnel are most welcoming and provide wonderful service. The food is exceptional at this resort especially the Italian restaurant. The facility has a variety of activities and is laid out in a manner that you do not feel your are squeezed into a small space - but very open and inviting for those that love the green! A wonderful place to stay and I can't wait to get there several more times.
My husband and I stayed at this resort September 3 -10, 2016. I would say that this place is average, and unless management makes some changes, I would probably not return to this resort, especially for the price that we paid for our trip. First off, it's location is lovely, we love the Papagayo region, and the hotel was situated perfectly to take advantage of the views. This was our fifth trip to CR, and our second to the Papagayo region, so I can give a good comparison to other hotels in the area. Our room was in a great spot, we had a deluxe ocean view, and it was exactly that. No complaints there! The air conditioning left a lot to be desired, but that is usually the case in CR. The bed was amazingly comfortable, never wanted to get out of it!!Okay, no for the not so great.....1. Check in was a nightmare. Two small tables trying to handle things when multiple guests show up at once. It took forever, and when you just traveled quite a way to get there, the last thing you want to do is stand in line in the sweltering heat for 30 minutes or more!2. The pool was tiny, with no swim up bar. I get that this is a smaller resort, but the pool is the main focus of the resort, so it really needs some work. There wasn't even a bar at the pool. If you didn't see a server, you had to go inside the grill to get a drink, which is ridiculous!3. The tide changes on the beach were crazy!! I get that the resort has no control over that, but that is the reason I am saying that the pool should be refurbished. There was a large part of the day where the beach was completely inaccessible, so the pool was your only option!4. The food. While I thought that the specialty restaurants were great, the buffet and the grill left a lot to be desired. The selection at both were way too minimal. The grill had pretty much the same offerings every day. By the end of the week, I just started skipping lunch because I was so over the grill and it's repetitiveness. While the quality of the food in the buffet was better, they need to have more selection. I have never been at an all-inclusive that had such a small selection of choices at dinner. And the set-up for dinner is way too cramped. They need to extend the area of the restaurant that the buffet is set-up in, because it was a crowded mess! Also, a little more air-conditioning in the buffet would be great!4. The disco was a fun surprise, but DJ Jonah needs some new music! I swear he had a pre-cut CD that he used every night. The same music, in the same order, every night. We made a game out of trying to guess which song was up next, and we were almost always right!! He did what we jokingly called "American Hour", where he would play American dance music for about an hour. The hour wasn't always at the same time, but once he started, it was the same music in the same order. Same goes for the rest of the music. Same stuff, same order. I knew the words to songs that I had never heard before coming to the OGP.5. The staff was hit or miss. No one was rude, but I think some of your staff needs some training. The entertainment team seemed more interested in hanging out with one another than with actually interacting with the guests (unless you were under 25). Not bad kids, but they definitely need training. The wait staff at the grill and at the specialty restaurants were great, no complaints. The waitstaff a the buffet, on the other hand was not so great. It seemed like the male waiters at the buffet did a better job than the female waitresses. Not sure why, just our observation. The servers at the pool were amazing!!! They worked their butts off in the sweltering heat for very little tips (we were the only ones I saw tipping), and did it with a smile on their faces! Some of the front desk staff were great, others didn't have a clue. I had one young man help me make reservations for a local restaurant (Ginger), and he was so helpful. When I came back the next day to change my reservations, the young lady a the desk found the phone number and told me to call myself. I told her my Spanish was limited, but she just gave me the phone and said to call myself. I could have done that myself from my cell phone....the whole point of going to the desk was to get a Spanish speaking person to call for me!So, all in all, I would say this place was average. We had a nice time, but we paid a higher price for this all-inclusive than we have for most others in the past, so I expected a higher level of service and quality. Unfortunately, we did not receive that. So unless some serious changes are made, we will probably not return to the Occidental Grand Papagayo on our next trip to Costa Rica.
My parents own an Occidental timeshare and my family went (adults only) and really enjoyed this place. Nice accommodations and very clean. It's a huge property with many smaller buildings for many of the rooms except for two larger buildings that are like regular hotel style. The view from every place we went on this resort is amazing. They have golf carts and small shuttle vehicles particularly for the buildings that are farther away. We stayed in the first building and requested a ride around the resort just to be able to see it all. The beach is awesome here. Between two of the best beaches on the Guanacaste coast. The beaches are all public property. It is the driest part of the country but it is still plenty lush and tropical. The thing we really liked about this place is the location. It's only 20-25 min from Liberia airport (which is a really nice, new airport!) and 1.5 hr drive from the mountain/volcano/rainforest sights. We rented a car for the week (lots of hidden fees for car rental in this country!) and they were very strict about the security and safety at the resort. Had gates and told them what rooms you were in and how many people were leaving/coming. They have an Avis car rental on site if you want one just for a day or two. On the road to Coco beach nearby you can see a herd/troup/family? of monkeys crossing the road everyday around 2pm. For shopping, Coco beach is really great and close by. There are lots of activities included at the hotel like kayaking at the beach, water volleyball, archery, yoga on the beach, snorkeling, etc. They have performers every night in the nice open air lobby. The food at the buffet is average but be sure to try everything because some things I didn't expect to be very good were actually some of the best things. Salt was all that was needed for most blander items. The buffet however is not air conditioned so it can be warm in the. I preferred to eat lunch at the place by the pool and dinners at the reservation restaurants which were excellent.
