Family trip

We had a great time in Costa Rica. Hotel Diria is the only hotel that we could see that is actually right on the beach. The beach is beautiful but you have to pay for chairs on the actual beach. The hotel is nice, pretty simple, clean. Friendly staff.

Price does not match service or quality

I've stayed at this hotel several times and kept coming back because the location is great and it's beachfront. Unfortunately these are the hotels only redeeming qualities. The service is terrible, the rooms are small and very old/tired, and the bathrooms are tiny. I patiently waited in line to check out amidst the usual chaos and had a group of people just walk up in front of me. When I let the receptionist and other guest know that there is a line, the guests rudely said fine, but amazingly the receptionist said it's ok for them to go first cause they are just checking out and made me wait another 20 minutes. After the receptionist was done, she didn't even bother to help me. I've never experienced something so outrageous in regards to customer service. The only front desk person with proper training is Cesar.I rate this hotel 2 stars for their poor customer service and quality especially given their rate in Tamarindo. The only reason it doesn't get zero is because the location. Much better places to stay !

Honeymoon Trip

We spent 10 days here on our honeymoon. We had a great time and was better than we imagined it would be. It was really nice having a surf break right in front of the hotel but it tends to get super busy. Definitely recommend walking down the beach to the river mouth, get the ferry for $1pp, and checking out the casitas surf break. Breakfast at the hotel was awesome, and we saw monkeys and iguanas during our stay. We would stay again but this will probably be a once in a lifetime trip since it was pretty expensive.

Beautiful Grounds, small dirty rooms

First the good stuff: The grounds at the Diria are beautiful. Lovely pools and lounging areas. Perfect location right in the centre of the town of Tamarindo. Since pedestrians don't have the right of way, it was great they had a staff member stopping traffic, so guests could cross from the main lobby area to the rooms across the street. We stayed in a Poolside Tropicana room which is in the complex across the street. This is a good location because it's much quieter than being on the beach side which also has the busy main street running adjacent. Lobby is quite small and gets very crowded when a lot of guests arrive at the same time. Now for the not so good: The rooms are more reminiscent of European hotels. The bathroom was especially small. Each room has 2 double beds (not queens) and your standard fridge, dresser. There wasn't enough floor space to put both of our suitcases. I had to store mine on top of a very high closet. The room was not uber clean, which I expect in any hotel new, old, large or small. I had stains on my pillow (UCK), the walls in the bathrooms were scuffed and stained, the drain in the shower was so clogged with hair that the water wouldn't drain (the staff did fix it the next day), the curtains were filthy. The worst part was the smell of raw sewage. I believe there was a restaurant right outside the hall way running adjacent to our building. I believe the kitchen and washroom must have been facing our building, because there were sewer pipes exposed in the pillars in our hallway. See photos. On day 2 of our stay, my daughter had a pair of shorts stolen from her room. We went to the desk to complain. I felt very sorry for their front desk staff because while we were waiting our turn, there were 4 sets of guests trying to check in only to be told there were no rooms. At least 3 of these guests had reserved through Expedia, and the hotel had no reservation for them. One other guest had made his reservation several months ago, and they had lost it. Needless to say there were some VERY unhappy tourists. When it was our turn to speak to the front dest staff to tell them about my daughter's shorts, they seemed very disinterested. They gave me a blank sheet of paper to write out what happened and told me they'd give it to the Housekeeping Supervisor the next day. Luckily I knew her name was Rosanna because we had met her the day before when we complained about the sewer smell. We subsequently saw her and she said she'd investigate and get back to me the next day. As we expected, the shorts never did show up!I was in contact with our travel agent in Canada - GoWay Travel, who was also in contact with their agent on the ground in Costa Rica - Camino Travel. They both worked very hard to move us to a different hotel. In the end, they were able to credit the cost of our 4 nights at Diria. So I have huge appreciation for both of those agents. Once we saw Rosanna the following day, she knew our stay was being refunded, so she wasn't particularly concerned abut the stolen shorts. I must add that after we complained about the sewer smell and the dirty room, they did call and give us a complimentary meal at one of their restaurants which we appreciated.
