Note we were there a week before Christmas so it was DEAD. We had the place to ourselves and were advised that in a few days after we departed, the place would be a zoo. Beautiful property. Adult only pool was a nice to have option. The main pool is in the center of the resort but across the street from the ocean as was our bungalow. We would have opted for an ocean view room had we known that we would across the street. Free breakfast was wonderful, great options for all tastes. The service lacked a bit during breakfast. Place was kept very neat but that meant you had to endure leaf blowers, pressure washers, weed whackers, and lawn mowers all day long, creating a less appealing atmosphere. Walking distance to the entire town, most central location in my opinion.
Do not reserve or accept a room that hasn't been remodeled. At check-in we were given a bungalow with adjoining rooms and as a party of 5 we were delighted. That changed in an instant. One room was missing headboards. Our shower didn't work. The air conditioner was broken (and Tamarindo is HOT in January). The toilet in the adjoining room overflowed. All this in 3 days. The maintenance staff was fast and effective and took care of the problems in a timely manner but we remained concerned. Our room had two "queen" beds but were more like full size - my tall husband fits on a queen but the Diria beds were too small so slept separately. The rooms were also dilapidated. Old, rusty, pealing, cracks, water stains, a missing drain in our bathroom sink, ill fitting bedding, missing curtains on the window in the bathrooms (although the rod supports were in place), and more. The rooms had clearly not been updated in decades. On the plus side, they were nicely sized and there was ample storage. We tried numerous times to change rooms but were told the hotel was booked solid. After the toilet overflow incident they managed to find us two. And what a difference! Each was in a different area of the property (one poolside and one beach facing) and the improvement was massive. The rooms had clearly been renovated and were comfortable and clean, and everything functioned nicely. As for the property....the website and promotional material imply that the hotel is located on the beach and on an intact continuous property. It's not. A road runs through it parallel to the beach. The beachside houses check-in, all the beach facing rooms, the bar/restaurant and a pool. Across the street you need gate access to the remaining rooms and another pool so anyone located in this area has to cross the street to access the beach and restaurant. Not a big deal but the city of Tamarindo is a bustling place so you need to be aware of traffic - especially important if you're traveling with children. The purpose of our trip was to scout out the Diria as a potential destination wedding site. We chose a different hotel because we didn't want to risk a negative experience for our guests. We also found the vendors on the beach exhausting and relentless. We look forward to a returning to Costa Rica but will most certainly not stay at the Hotel Tamarindo Diria.
It's one thing to be prepared for the old and tired room, dirty breakfast, raccoons running on the roof all night, and broken screen that let in crickets and spiders. I rarely take the time to write a bad review and was prepared for these based on previous negative reviews. The real nightmare was our last night's stay when the hotel hosted a wedding and was blasting music until very late, literally shaking the walls of our room, so much that we couldn't hear each other, much less get any sleep. Our poor neighbor tried to speak to the guests and was nearly in tears after getting yelled at. The management offered no apology and did not interfere !!Most of the issues in this hotel can be put to neglect, but an intentional discomfort and insult to guests for making a few extra bucks by hosting a nightclub outside our room is simply inexcusable. Be prepared to have your vacation ruined if you stay here
The Tamarindo Diria is located on a fantastic stretch of beach. We stayed in a 1st floor ocean front room. While the view was beautiful please know if you stay in the southern wing, your view is somewhat obstructed by a stone barrier that separates the beach from the hotel property. I don't consider this a deal breaker since I'm sure there is a reason for the barrier to be there. But I would have requested a 2nd or 3rd floor ocean front room if I had known. It was really the experience in the room that was most disappointing. Our room was tired, poorly lit and rather small. Again, these are not necessarily deal breakers as long as it is otherwise clean. The deal breaker for me was staying there with a "critter" in the rafters above the room. We heard the scratching and movement above us upon arriving. Then our neighbor came out and asked us if we could hear that and that he and his wife were awakened at 5:00am by this. That evening, as the sound continued my husband and our neighbor went to the front desk to complain. A maintenance man was sent to investigate, but we heard nothing further that night. Then again, on the evening of our 2nd day we began to hear the activity again. My husband returned to the front desk at which time he was told that they had been having a racoon problem and that he would send someone to investigate. Then at 4:20am the next morning, we were awakened by what had to be multiple raccoons in the ceiling rafters above us. When my husband returned to the front desk, the person responded, "yes, this is when the raccoons return". What?! At no time did anyone express their apologies, appear to bend over backwards to assist us or offer to move us. We were happy to be leaving since this did not appear to have a planned resolution. It became harder to overlook the other issues like finding ants crawling on me after getting into bed to read on the first night. They sent a really sweet lady with ant spray, but there was nothing to spray. She simply changed our comforter. The water pressure was low and was virtually non-existent when my neighbor was taking a shower at the same time. There was a clump of hair found on the bathroom floor that did not belong to me, dirt on the floor that I picked up on my feet when walking barefoot across the floor, beat up paint on the walls and a hole in the closet wall. And getting wash cloths replaced seemed to be an issue. We started out with two. Then after the room was cleaned we had none. So we made yet another trip to the front desk for help. That nice lady arrived with 2 wash cloths. Then the next day, we had just one clean wash cloth returned. Then, upon checking out, there were a couple of charges that did not belong to us. They kindly removed them when they could not match the signature to ours, but for us it was another example of the lack of attention to detail at this hotel. There isn't a single one of these issues we would consider insurmountable. The Tamarindo Diria could have maintained our loyalty if they just simply seemed to care at any point in the process. Cost Rica was an amazing trip. When we return, it is unlikely we will be returning to this hotel and can't in good conscience recommend it to others based on this experience.
This hotel has two parts, one across the main strip with two pools (one adult) and the main hotel, pool and beach. The reception make no issue of giving the worst rooms for anyone booking through expedia. Rooms vary greatly and very few have sea views, Those that do are near the restaurant and main pool, along with everyone sunbathing in the gardens in front, so not really that private or quiet. The Beach front location and restaurants are great though and The breakfast is well worth it.
