Despite the fact that I stayed at a Suite Premium Level I saw no additional benefits nor I received any added value for this. It was all a chain of bad details that at the end when summed up just made the whole stay a bad experience. At check in I was told to go to the 6th floor since Premium Level check in takes place at the exclusive club (welcome cocktail included) not in my case. When I walked in the Miravalles suite a lot of metal screws were scattered at the Suite's carpet, perhaps someone previous maintenance labor. The most frustrating thing that hit me the second I walked in was this awful strong smoke/cigar stench, this is a non smoking floor yet the room had this smell so impregnated that despite leaving the windows open it never disappeared it was like if it was all over the curtains, walls and bed sheets, due to timing constraints I could not spare time to make room changes so I did not report the problem immediately, I had hopes that by the time I was to get back to the room the smell had disappeared but that did not happen. My sleep was interrupted very early in the morning due to a car's alarm at the parking lot going off in an endless loop, this stayed for hours, enough to make someone wish to have the power to go find the car and strip the battery and cables out of it.At breakfast I wanted to try the "Pinto" but the tray was empty, I patiently waited in hopes that the staff would bring a new one but that didn't happen so I had to move on and get something else. I wanted a good cup of coffee with my breakfast but the coffee machine was out of service; me and other guests were disappointed, again no one from the staff seem so have noticed that. I left the restaurant with the idea that I was going back to the room and get me a coffee from the room's coffee machine however when I was just about to make my own coffee I found that the coffee machine's water reservoir had this weird nasty looking thing at the bottom of it, not sure if caused by water being there for long time or just lack of cleaning, at the end it was a no coffee morning. Too bad as I am one of those who like to start the day with one of those delicious dark drinks. This is definitely not what I would expect from a "Premium Level Suite" I left the hotel disappointed as I have had much better experiences from non premium suites at other hotels.
I left a rating earlier but we are now finished with our trip and not sure how to change so need to add a few things. Juan Cuello gave phenomenal service each and every time we had him as a waiter (3). The spa service was wonderful (massage). The wait service at the pool was okay. The food was okay....breakfast was the best by far. The sushi bar was good and sky bar great view. We watched a Mexican show one night at yeh hotel that was awesome (Mariachi and dancers). San Jose (downtown just a few min away) is more quaint than Cabo san Lucas but has all you need-prices way better for shopping etc and all the same stuff! Also if you don't like bargaining and don't want the store owners all over you, this is the place to shop. So much more pleasant for me and my husband and good prices. Overall great trip and hotel was just fine and a good price.
Okay, I wanted to post this review to warn other travelers about this hotel. I gave it two stars because the grounds were nice, the parking was free and secure and the breakfast buffet was outstanding. But unfortunately I can't say anything else nice about this place. If you are staying here, look out for overcharges and theft. On two occasions when we checked our receipts we were overcharged. One of them was a room service receipt. When we asked why we were overcharged the concierge simply said, "sorry that's Manuel for you." Really? I know this is Costa Rica but come on. Then my wife had some cubic zirconia earrings that got jacked (this was expected at this point, luckily they were fake diamond's because again, nothing was done about the theft). Also one time we asked to use the tennis courts and the guy at the front tells us to go down there (its a long walk downhill) and there is equipment and lights for us. We hike all the way down there only to find...nothing! So we hike back up to the hotel and ask the concierge why he told us to go down there if no one was there and waste our time like that and he just acted confused. Really frustrating. Customer service here is a zero. Also there are raccoons by the pool. Hope this helps someone out there. Bottom line, don't bring valuables to this hotel and check every charge before signing.
This was my 2nd visit to Barceló San Jose Palacio. I loved it so much the first time, as well as the beautiful country of Costa Rica, so I chose this country and hotel for our honeymoon. This experience was even nicer than the first. After booking the Premium king room, we got a free upgrade to a suite on the 6th floor. This upgrade included access to Club Premium. It was great value for money. The staff made us feel so welcomed. Being a first experience for my husband, he loved it and is now recommending to his friends and family alike. Special mention to one of the attendants at Club Premium Amy. Amy went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable Raquel at the lobby was also wonderful. Each person was so genuine and welcoming. There was nothing too hard to ask. Thank you so much for making our stay one of the best ever! We are definitely returning.Another great thing about Costa Rica is that they have amazing tours, and a nice variety of activities. We did the tours for La Paz and Poas Volcano Combo, Hot Springs at Arenal - Tabacon, Dairy Farm Tour/ City Tour with Andy (5 stars), City Tour. Shopping is not recommended though - it is very expensive - almost 3 times as much as Panama. I would recommend to shop at Panama (Albrook Mall) and vacation at Costa Rica.
This hotel is very nice. It is not the original hotel I had chosen to stay at. I had originally booked the Wyndham Garden but when I arrived at the hotel the staff apologized and said they had overbooked due to a Pre´-qualifying FIFA game Costa Rica vs USA and so they had arranged for me to stay at Barcelo. The hotel seems a bit out dated in terms of decoration and architecture but the overall experience is excellent. Nice bar and restaurants. There is also a Britt Shop for those of you who have tried the chocolates. The rooms where clean and staff very welcoming.Good choice if you are in town.
