Holiday Inn San Jose Downtown Aurola
- What's Included
OverviewStylish 17-story hotel located opposite Parque Morazan.
Classic Holiday Inn, not the highest luxury but this hotel is very nice and comfortable perhaps a little worn but not too much. The rooms are large and the food in the restaurant is good. Oddly enough the menu prices for food in the bar was cheaper than the restaurant for the exact same meal. The staff are all very kind and attentive. My only criticism is the water pressure is very low.
Room was nice and clean, restaurant Tropicana was good. Views of city were nice. Friendly staff. We had some drinks in the bar and the service was good. Could also order food there so that was nice as well.
A decent room with a good view, we enjoyed a few drinks at happy hour in the bar which were good value at 2 for 1 from 5pm to 6pm, but not well advertised. Barman was very good. Not far from the Italian Sapore Trattoria restaurant which I would recommend for dinner, the receptionist was unable to book this for us though.Sadly the water was cold for the morning shower which the receptionist wasn't particularly apologetic about.
Was originally booked to sat here three nights but left after the first night. Hotel is old and very run-down and dark. The room decor is ok but there are many stains on the carpets and the blind do not close all the way (I had to use a chair to hold the blinds in place). The windows are also not soundproofed so you can hear the traffic etc. The main restaurant is disappointing, the lighting is very dim and the selection for breakfast is certainly poor and not the usual HI standard. The staff in the restaurant are very busy and it is clear the are understaffed, the decor and general ambience do not make it comfortable at all, it has a eat your food and get out feel about it. There is a casino connected to the hotel and it is the only place to get a meal after 11PM (if you don't want room service), the quality was ok but once again it is a casino environment which is not for everyone. The rooms are also very dark and dim, even during the day I had to use the lights! Overall a disappointing stay and my lowest rating yet..
At first glance, this hotel has everything you expect from a stateside Holiday Inn. The lobby is well maintained. The furniture appears new. The brass and chrome gleam. Similarly, the bed was exceptional. My corner room had new furniture and the bell captain was very helpful throughout my stay. He did not expect a gratuity but was clearly grateful for the generous amount I gave to him. You wont be treated like a tourist at this hotel. If you are here on business, it will meet nearly all your expectations. But be warned: three of Central America's most notorious whorehouses are steps away and street walkers congregate in the park at night in front of the hotel entrance. If you arrive and leave in a cab, you may not notice them there, but they are there. This isn't a place to venture out after dark. If you are a female solo traveler on business, you want to stay elsewhere. On the other hand, there is a thriving shopping area during the day a few blocks away and the hotel is minutes from many important business destinations. Also of note: behind the veneer of a Holiday Inn that meets every expectation of a Westerner that visits more than 100 IHG properties a year on four continents, there are some small details that are missing. There was no hot water, despite repeatedly following the directions posted in the shower and telephoning the desk for assistance. There was no hot water in the sink. There was no operator error here by me, the hotel simply doesn't have hot water or runs out. The towels were rags. Really bad. Far below Motel 6 standards in the United States. Frayed beyond use with thousands of threads literally hanging off of them. Dingy. Stained. Even if there had been hot water, Im not sure I would have used the towels. How the bed could be so lovely and the bath experience be so neglected, I have no idea. Unshowered and unshaven, I will conclude my business in San Jose and move on. I will make better choice next time.
