Place to relax and enjoy, wonderful beach and great people

We would like to thank MBV people for going above and beyond the call of duty in making every effort to please us and create great conditions for a wonderful vacation. I will name only a few, however, every MBV employee deserves kudos for their work, from the moment the bus stopped to drop us off till the moment we left. We enjoyed coffee and drinks at piano bar, thanks Saily. She was quick with the drinks and always met us with a big smile. Similarly at the beach bar, the bartender, I think his name is Orestes, was very friendly and swift, he always greeted us and served promptly. We were very pleased with a la carte restaurants, thanks to Odlanier and Luis, all was good and on time. Wonderful experience, all over. This was our fifth time to Cuba, before this trip we went to Paradisus Princesa del Mar, Iberostar, Paradisus and Blau, all in Varadero. We had some concerns about the weather, possible rains or hurricanes, high temperature, mosquitos, food, and distance from the airport. It takes about 90 minutes, we didn’t like it but we were prepared for it and the ride was not too bad. Long term forecast was completely wrong, weather was excellent, there was some rain during night time, and wind was minimal and pleasant. Outside temperature was high but there was always some breeze coming from the sea. The breeze cools beach sand enough to walk around without any problems. Beach bartender was constantly strolling and offering refreshments. The beach is beautiful, clean, and not busy. Plenty of shade and places to dwell all the time, and to have some privacy too. We spent most of the time in the water. This was the best beach time we had so far in Cuba. We mostly stayed on the main beach, other two are much smaller. We didn’t have troubles with mosquitos or other bugs, there were none in the room, there were few in the evening while sitting outside of the piano bar. They did fumigate hotel area every day. We had repellant spray but we didn’t use it at all. Lobby, restaurants and bar are closed spaces and constantly air conditioned. No sparrows, other birds or bugs helping themselves there, unlike other places in Cuba we’ve been so far. The room was spacious and nice, clean and well maintained, air condition worked flawlessly and we had control over temperature settings. The fridge was always refilled with water and beer and we had enough coffee all the time. We especially liked the outside shower, very practical all day long. Our maid did great job keeping everything clean and out concierge Armando arranged restaurant events and order logistics. We can go long on food and restaurants, overall we are satisfied, but having more a la carte restaurants would be definitely better. We found both a la carte restaurants to be good, once we realized that we have some vouchers for better wine we started using them. We liked the main restaurant too; it is combination of a buffet for starters and a la carte for the main course. It is surrounded by trees and tropical plants and connected with a walkway to main beach. It is clean, well-supplied, food is good and service is prompt. There was always enough space to sit. Pleasant atmosphere, convenient location, good food and service. We liked evening entertainment, well, most of the time. As much as we liked the live music with minimal electronic assistance outside of the piano bar (there was a fantastic traditional five man band) and in the main restaurant more so we disliked karaoke and other electronically assisted and amplified sounds. It was loud, low quality, distorted and not in proportion to the space and people attending. And not in tune with the overall atmosphere of the hotel. This place projects tranquility and certain level of refinement and this type of entertainment simply doesn’t go with it, in our view. This is matter of personal preference but we thought it would be right to give accurate account on it from our perspective. On the way back to the airport we talked with our fellow travelers and all of them were sharing similar views about the hotel and service. When we returned home we summarized our experiences one more time and concluded that this was the best Cuba vacation so far. We recommended hotel to all our friends and our kids too and we plan of coming back once we finish exploring other Cuban destinations. The next one is Holguin and then we will see. We have nothing more to say except to thank everybody at MBV one more time. Great work.Milena & BlagojeWindsor, Canada

Girl Friend Get-Away

My friend and I stayed at the Melia Buenavista from July 29th to August 5th. My hubby and I had previously stayed at this resort in 2013 and remembered the ‘chill-out’ vibe. We wanted just that for our girl’s vacation, pampering and relaxation. Staff went above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for more, staff were extremely attentive and fondly referred to us as their princesses! We booked our package through Selloffvacations and decided to go all out with the luxury package via Air Transat. This package offered several perks that included Option Plus (priority luggage and seat selection), airport lounge access in Toronto and in Santa Clara. The best part of this package included a private transfer to and from the resort. In our opinion, all these extra perks were definitely worth the additional $100.00!Upon arrival to the hotel, staff were extremely welcoming! We were promptly checked in and introduced to one of our butlers, Orestes (Lily was our other butler :) . Orestes escorted us to our room, our luggage arrived within minutes. Our room was 622 which was next to the ‘Sunset’ beach. The rooms were large and well appointed, multiple pillows, large walk-in closet, fantastic outdoor shower and very comfortable beds. The AC was excellent. We noted that the ceiling fan did not work, we reported it the next morning and it was replaced the very same day! Our mini bar was stocked daily with multiple bottles of water, beer, juice, etc. Staff even made sure to include a bottle of champagne every day! My only negative comments about the room would be that it needed a really good dusting (the lamp shades were extremely dusty), a little more attentiveness to cleaning is required (we had squashed a creepy spider one night and its remnants remained on our bathroom floor the entire vacation) and that the toilet paper should be replenished on a daily basis. As for the food and drinks at the resort, all were great but we must say that the pizzas made to order at the pool were fantastic! All of the beaches were beautiful, lots of loungers, no worries about getting shade any time of the day. Staff were extremely attentive and always managed to keep our glasses filled. Lester provided excellent drink service on the beach and at the main pool. One day when Lester was working the beach, he was actually running from palapa to palapa and back to the bar ensuring everyone was well hydrated… it was so hot… the sweat was pouring off him, he managed a smile and said ‘it’s my pleasure’… now that’s service! The evening entertainment was really good compared to our last visit in 2013. Every night guests would gather outside the main bar to listen to various live bands, all were very talented! One night the violinist from the sunset beach played along with some techno music, a very unique experience. Another night we had the pleasure of watching a water ballet show in the main pool, pretty amazing considering how shallow the water was! A heartfelt shout out to Armando who is a true professional and an extremely kind gentleman. Thanks for keeping an eye out for us and thanks for being our dancing partner! Overall, we had a fantastic time and would not hesitate to recommend this resort to our family and friends!

Exceptional as always

Our 3rd stay at this resort and did not disappoint. The location, intimacy and above all the staff make this the perfect place for a peaceful abd memorable break. The staff is so attentive and eager to help that you can't help but feel like you are the most valued guest. Arrival: The bus journey was the usual 90 minute, although this time the bus did have a bathroom on board so you can have cervezas(Cristal 2 for 5 CAD) to your hearts content. Once we got to the resort, we were greeted with warm smiles, cold towels, refreshing drinks and a welcome back. Since there were only 3 people checking in, we were in our room within 15 mins. Baggage arrived promptly too.Room: This time around we were in the oceanfront room with a breathtaking view of the sea. The balcony was used everyday this time for everything from morning coffees to afternoon siestas and from pre-dinner bubbly to nightcaps. If you are in an oceanfront room, make sure you just step out late at night(bug spray mandatory) and just listen to the waves lap the beach. Just devine.Butlers: This time around we had Lily and Orestes. Orestes remembered that rum is my libation of choice and made sure there was a bottle in our room so I wouldn't have to walk to the bar for a drink or two. Lily was so helpful with everything and when I wasnt feeling well one afternoon, she made sure I had soup and fruit in the room. All our restaurant reservations were set at our choice of time and place. Lily was also the mastermind behind setting up a beautiful paella lunch even though it wasn't on the menu.Housekeeping: The room was spotlessly clean everyday and the minibar was filled to our liking each day. Ernest was fantastic at his job with turndowns every evening with his big smile and handwritten notes. He would also make sure the minibar was filled for the evening.Spa: I ended up getting a couple of massages and the wife got a massage and a facial. Eased away all our aches from all the swimming in the ocean and lying in the pool.Restaurants: Ranchon was great as usual for breakfast & lunch (when you feel like having a sit down lunch). The poolside grill still serves some of the best pizzas alongwith chicken, burgers, hot dogs, grilled chorizo and even tacos some days. Fruits were plentiful. On our bus ride in, we saw a lot of mango trees with fruit and we were treated to mangoes everyday. The change in chefs is most evident in the evening meals. You can still have great lobster but now there are even more options like multiple fish entrees and even octopus. Everything is cooked to your liking and should you want more, just ask. Had room service multiple times this trip and everything was excellent.Bars: The team of Lester, Osmany and Orestes is probably one of the hardest working bar crew I have seen. They will even make rounds all the way till the sunset beach in 30 degree weather. Hats off to these guys. The lobby bar is the perfect place for everything from your morning coffee to your night cap and everything in between. If you like rum, you could do rum tastings or flights should your heart fancy.Landscape: All three beaches are maintained really well. In the mornings you can see the guys sweeping the washed up seaweed so the water is crystal clear and free of debris when you go for a swim. Seating is plentiful no matter the beach.Vibe: To us it seems like this is a resort truly made for relaxation. You feel truly disconnected with the lack of wifi in the rooms. Should you need to connect to the internet, complimentary cards are available in the lobby. The lack of loud music or nightly activities makes for a very tranquil escape. Management: You could see the management team out and about making sure everything is running smoothly and without any hiccups. In our visits, we have seen 3 different managers and seems like the resort hasn't functions well no matter who is the current director. Miguel was the manager at our visit and he made sure to get to know us. When I commended him on a job well done, his immediate response was that its the team that deserves the credit. In conclusion, Buenavista continues to be the resort of choice for our escapes to the beach. Whenever we go anywhere else, it gets compared to Melia Buenavista. Looking forward to our next trip to this slice of paradise.
