Melia Buenavista Cayo Santa Maria is an amazing luxury resort within Cuba's resort strip. All suites are spacious, modern, and elegant. The resort is also staffed with extremely attentive and personable staff. Melia Buenavista is also known for their breathtaking snorkeling locations. For those wanting to experience beauty within and outside of resort grounds, the Melia Buena Vista Cayo Santa Maria is the perfect destination.
This luxury resort is located in one of the most stunning areas of Cayo Santa Maria. Guests at Melia Buenavista will love the attentive staff and Royal Service pampering. Located in a secluded ecological environment among white sand beaches and clear Caribbean waters. This 5 star resorts features 104 suites and is an adults only resort.
Location: Directly on a beautiful white-sand beach. Approximately 110 km from the Santa Clara airport.
The staff all seem to come from the school of smiley faces. From maintenance to reception and butlers everyone is always smiling, helpful and efficient. A minor problem with the cistern flushing at 8:00pm was dealt with immediately. Breakfast and the bar food was good, who can complain about Eggs Benedict and smoked salmon or personally made pizzas. Our thanks to the pool bar staff who were efficient and unflappable, oh, and smiley. Our only reservation was the evening meal which was all fairly samey and not up to the standard one would expect from a hotel of this grade. Given the price and ideals of this hotel the secondment of a European trained chef for a month or so would not go amiss, the staff are willing enough after all.
OVERVIEWThe good: intimate size (100 rooms), quiet atmosphere, 2 pools, 3 beaches with long walks, great staff, and the best food we've had in Cuba. The not-so-good: it's a 100-120 minute bus ride from the airport, and because the resort is built on lagoon-like land there are jejenes!! Google them. THE ROOMSExcellent hotel rooms with a large living area, a private balcony or patio, and a comfortable (but firm) bed. Each room has a large whirlpool tub along with an outdoor, private shower. The outdoor shower is a nice idea, but it's not so great in execution - especially when it's cool or rainy. Bar fridge that is stocked with soft drinks and beer, coffee maker, large TV decent satellite service, wall safe, etc. THE FACILITIESThe main lobby is large, modern and comfortable for sitting and conversing with other guests. There is also a medium size piano bar with nightly entertainment, and both indoor and outdoor seating. Other than the lobby and piano bar, there are no other public indoor spaces for socializing.SPA & GYMWe didn't try the spa services, but they have quite a range. Attached to the spa is a smallish, but very well appointed, gym that we did use. Two treadmills, two steppers, a universal machine, free weights, etc. There is also an outdoor hot tub near the gym that is free for all guest but was rarely in use.RESTAURANTSThere are three indoor restaurants plus the pool grill. The main two restaurants are only open for dinner. The larger one changes menu every night and has some quasi-themed dinners. The smaller one has the same menu every night. The food in both ranges from good to excellent. We only had a few dishes that were questionable (pork roast that was as hard as a rock, for example), and a number of dishes that really impressed us both in the intricacy of the flavours and the quality of the presentation. We're definitely foodies, and we know to temper our expectations when in Cuba, but we were both generally impressed. On a few nights, they also opened the other restaurant at the northeast end of the property with a Cuban menu, but we didn't eat there for dinner. For lunch, you have the choice of the pool grill or the northeast restaurant. The pool grill does a very nice pizza in their wood burning pizza oven, as well as burgers, meat skewers or hot dogs. The restaurant has a sizeable salad/fruit/cold cut bar, along with a menu that features grilled fish, chicken, etc. The menu doesn't change at all, but the food is good. We found that alternating between the pool grill and restaurant gave us enough variety.Breakfast is served in the northeast restaurant. If it's packed (which is was on a few days), service can be a bit scattered because the staff are stretched too thin. The wait staff have to not only take orders and serve the food, but make the cappuccinos and bus the tables. The salad/fruit/cold cut bar is also in operation at lunch, plus the usual array of pastries, breads, juices, etc. There is also a full menu with omelettes, scrambled eggs, eggs benedict, boiled eggs, french toast, pancakes, etc. accompanied by ham or bacon. And as mentioned, cafe latte, cappuccino, americano, cafe con leche, etc.You can also make a dinner reservation at one of the other Melia hotels down the road from the Buenavista. We did the Japanese restaurant one night, but the food was not very good (way too much salt) and the service was just weird. Hard to explain. Others we spoke to confirmed our feeling that it's not worth bothering with the other hotels for dinner unless you're really bored with the food at Buenavista. POOLSThe main pool has a bar which is always crowded. There are some activities in the pool during the day (aerobics, etc.), and a live band some afternoons. If you want to get away from the noise (and the sound level really isn't bad), or if you can't find a lounge chair, you can walk 30 seconds to the other pool which is never busy and is dead quiet. Most days, there were only 3 or 4 people at the second pool.BEACHESThere are three beaches. For lack of a better description, they are the northeast beach, the central beach, and the sunset beach. The northeast beach is the largest, but all week we had strong winds that prevented us from going there other than to quickly take in the view. The wind was too much. The central beach is enclosed by two coral reefs and is quiet and calm, and the water is the warmest of the three beaches because it is enclosed. The sunset beach is also quiet calm, and of course it has great views at sunset!ENTERTAINMENTThere is nightly entertainment in the piano bar: a pianist, or a guitarist accompanied by programmed rhythm tracks. Very talented. Smallish 4-6 piece bands will also perform in the late afternoon or early evening near the pool or the piano bar outdoor seating.Other than that, there is no formal nightly entertainment - although one night they did to a synchro swimming show in the pool that was very good.BUS RIDEIt's a 100-110 minute bus ride from the airport, with stops on the way at the Ibirostar and the two other Melia properties. Buenavista is the last stop. It's not bad if you have a book to read or music to listen to. But be prepared.BUGSSo this is the major downside to our trip. My wife and I each had over 60 bug bites on our first full day, and more throughout the week despite wearing bug spray. The resort is built on a lagoon, and there are many (many) jejenes. The staff told us they only come out at dawn and dusk, but we found that wasn't true. They come out if it's cloudy, if it's rainy, etc. They get into the hotel rooms and bite you at night. They are just plain hard to avoid. And the bites itch like crazy and last for a week or more. They're similar to no-see-ums or sand fleas, but they look more like tiny mosquitos (from what I can tell on google). It also seems that they are attracted to some people and not others. Must have something to do with body scent? It really put a damper on the vacation and it's the only reason we won't go back to the Buenavista.
If you're looking for a relaxing, romantic spot look no further. 3 beaches to enjoy with great snorkelling. 2 pools with great oven baked pizzas and burgers. Staff were all great. Very friendly and eager to help. Loved the music on the beach with cocktails every night to watch sunset. Rooms were very spacious and very clean. Loved the outdoor showers. Will go back again for sure
This is a top notch adults only resort. The service is very personal. Beaches are always uncrowded, powder white sand, clear blue water and great snorkeling! The beaches are gorgeous - one for sunset, one for snorkeling and one for a Long Beach walk with great waves! Rooms are comfortable and large - love the outdoor showers. Staff-- Lester, Orstes, Osmany, Laly - great bar service and always go out of their way to offer first class bar service at the beach or pool! Our favorite spot for lunch is around the pool for homemade pizza- the 2 cooks are fantastic and exceptional pizza! Any at reception is terrific and always a bright smile to great us, and makes us feel welcome. Jorge is a life saver should I need someone to fix my internet connection on my iPad. Our butlers Joel, Belkys are caring and go out of their way to take care of us. Leo - always available and helps with our luggage! Cesar ensures our fridge is filled. Inside bar staff - Llorvys and Yamisela and Yami are always ready to serve us our drinks and coffee! We have been there about 7 times and the staff always remember us and make us feel like we are at home when we return. The reason we come back is because the staff go above and beyond with their service, be it your first visit or repeat visit. Looking forward to our next visit. (Sorry for not spelling all the names correctly!) This resort is great because the staff make it exceptionally so!!
Number 1 reason for staying here and coming back: The Staff. Laily, Lester,Orestes, Osmani, Pedro, Nardel, Jorge, Juanito, Lily, Pederoso, Syneys.... the cooks, everyone.... so many people are now our family. You are treated like a friend, taken care of and cared for. People are amazing. They do it because they care about you. If you tip or don't you will get the same level of care. We tipped because the service was outstanding. No one from Quebec tips... ever. It was sad to see. When you arrive, you get your own butler that will arrange restaurant reservations (You can hit up restaurants at the sister resorts if you like (free bus transport). Butlers will take care of everything and anything for you. Rooms are huge with everything you need in them. LCD TV's with HDMI inputs (we brought our own Android box with movies). Universal plugs for electricity so you don't need converters. Mini fridge stocked but if you are missing something call your butler. 30 second walk to the beach from your room.Food: A La Carte. Fantastic! If you don't like things on the menu, kitchen will make you whatever you want! Many reviewers mentioned that Pizza at the pool. THE BEST PIZZA on the planet. Late night room service is hit and miss. You can hit up 3 other resorts if you want variety.Beach: 3 of them and all 3 awesome.Pools: Not very deep but you have 2 of themWe are going back in November because we love this place. Bast part, no Americans.Do and do not's: TIP your servers, they do not expect the tips but greatly appreciate them. Language barriers, lot's of staff do not speak English but will go out off their way to help you.Overall we love the Cuban people, Staff and the resort. Management is amazing also. I can't wait to go back.Polako!
