The Royalton Cayo Santa Maria is a gem of a resort, located outside of Cuba's capital. The resort has a great array of pools and the grounds are well-maintained. Resort staff is incredibly hospitable, pleasant, and attentive. This is a great budget resort for couples and adults who want to experience the luxury of what Cuba has to offer without having to splurge.
The place is really nice but the service and, above all, the food is frankly not up to par. Unacceptable breakfast ! The hotel was very uncrowded during our stay which helped to improve our comfort. Average despite of the very nice location but no sea view from the rooms.
Originally booked at the Sanctuary Memories, but for some reason (likely overbooking) was upgraded to the Royalton, as with many other travellers who had the same situation. Clearly we were fortunate after speaking with others who stayed at Sanctuary, and complained of so-so food, quite typical for Cuba, and saving loungers around the pool because of large crowds.We did not require wristbands at Royalton, and had free access to any of the Memories resorts and the Starfish on the west side. There are only around 125 rooms and was only about 65% full when we arrived which made dinner arrangements simple. There is not a buffet, only 2 a-la- cartes, and a 24 hour snack bar, the service was good as was the food (ate lobster 5 times - LOL), again for Cuba. The Hotel is fairly new and is in decent condition. Even though hurricane Irma caused some damage, the resort is recovering nicely the gardens are nice, most of the palm trees are only around 10 to 15 feet tall. The cleaning staff and workers are all very friendly and work hard. Our AC unit leaked one night and the water needs to run a while to get warm, but these where minor inconveniences. Cayo Santa Maria Maria has one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen with very soft sand and turquoise waters, and the drink service at the beach was good. It’s important to give a small 1-3 peso tip regularly for good service. There is a small market beside the resort which is fun.Overall we enjoyed our vacation to Cayo Santa Maria, and the Royalton Resort. It was nice meeting other great Canadians from coast to coast. The great staff at the Royalton as well as the friendly people of Cuba made it even better.“Gracias”
If you were a first time guest you would not be able to compare to previous Royalton visits. This was our fourth stay during the Christmas and New Year period. Under a new management team there was an evident lack of organization. Many of the details implemented by previous management teams led by Raul and Mateusz were missing. Upon our arrival we were left standing in the lobby with welcome drinks and refreshing towels. This was previously done in the relaxing atmosphere of the lobby bar where we would have been seated, just like at home. Breakfast and dinner were cafeteria style, just sit anywhere. Previously a butler or manager would greet the guests and have them seated. New Years eve was a disappointment for many. Gone were the roses for the ladies and greeting by management. No one was available to seat you, just find a table. Many experienced a 1 1/2 hour wait for dinner. The main entertainment group sang in English and no Cuban music band to add to the vacation experience. An entertainment manager is needed and needs to communicate with management. There was no weekly schedule of events available in the rooms or lobby as before. Who knew it was Cuban or Canada day or there was an evening of sunset music at the beach bar. Management needs to realize it is a competitive business for guests at a 5 star rated resort and not to yell across the lower pool to a guest. Management was not present , as previously, to waive goodbye to guests upon their bus departure thanking them for choosing the Royalton. We did that ourselves to several couples we had met. These were small items that can be corrected at no cost to the Royalton and bring it back to a 5 star rating. The butlers and staff are the best anywhere! Everyone asked if there was anything we needed or could do for us. The welcome back guest dinner by the lower pool continues to be a great event. The tree planting ceremony was done with style and class - well done! The new chef Magdiel has done a magnificent job of new menus, variety and having his staff at all the restaurants prepare the best meals we have ever enjoyed at the Royalton. We observed Magdiel interacting with guests, morning and evening asking if they were satisfied with the food. I don't think he ever slept during our stay. Management should follow Magdiel's lead and ask staff and guests what the guests have enjoyed in the past and listen. You will get back your 5 star rating. Thank you to butlers Diego, Mario, Leandy and Noelvis, always helpful and professional. Hurry back Alexis, we miss you. Tatiana, Yudeisy, Disleidy, Yurismara and all the staff at the Senses made us feel special each night. A terrific team. At Eggsellence Leonardo, Heidi and Alexander always welcomed us with a smile. The Sunset snack bar Rachel, Antonio, Keiniert and the many others thank you. It is the most upscale snack bar you could ever find. At the lobby bar the courteous staff was led by Lily, Bernardo and Yaliennis. Our maids Liset, Jacelyn and Gypsy looked after us and had a genuine morning smile. Mario and Javier of the Entertainment team thank you for your friendly greetings and being there with us for the special events. Year after year you are the best with the guests. Norge and his team at the beach bar always greeted us with a genuine smile. I hope the Royalton will improve to get back to the 5 star rating. It would be a disappointment next year if they did not.
We stayed from Jan 5-12, 2018 and we enjoyed our stay again! We decided to go back because we knew what to expect: serenity, excellent customer service and great food, yes, great food (further explained below).Despite hurricane Irma (apparently many roofs were gone), serenity and beauty of this place remained. It looked like how it did a year ago.Customer service too remained excellent. From the time we arrived to the time we left, staff remained attentive to us. Special mention to Eddie & Lily at the Piano Bar, Javier and Lisse and the lovely ladies and gentlemen at Senses and Eggelence. Antonio ( I think) in the Cafe bar by the lower pool and the waitstaff at the beach. There were two guys (alternated) at the beach helping out customers with their beach chairs were super nice, especially the older senyor. Everyone there were terrrific, bellmen, our maid Yobaisy to our butler Diego, they all did provided excellent service. Food, we all know that Cuba is not like Mexico or DR when it comes to food because of many factors (e.g. embargo). But, they have pretty good selection. The pumpkin and cheese soup, yummy! The octopus stew-like dish, tasty and of course, lobster tails (we had it 4 times). If u want light breakfast, go the cafe; Eggsellence is more heavy (ala carte and mini buffet). They should have crepes on ala carte instead of mini buffet bec it did become hard. And the beach, of course is pure beauty. There are always chairs available.A few suggestions/Tips1. Have $1 bill available at reception. It is always a struggle to get small bills. Front desk is not helpful at all; they know why we need it and more often than not, they say, no change. Front desk I found were not as excellent with their customer service or positive attitude as the rest of the staff with the ecxeption of Diana, she was great.THERE IS A BANK IN THE PLAZA , a two minite walk, where u can get change. Make sure you bring your passport or driver’s licence.2. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON CARNAVAL at the Plaza. Not worth it.3. BUY AIRPORT VIP from Sunwing rep. Its worh it. You’ll be in the express lane at check-in, includes half hour internet, drinks (alcohol, water) and food (ham cheese sandwich, hot dog) included. There is a smoking area at VIP too.Thank you staff and crew at Royalton. We enjoyed our stay again and we’ll come again.
I booked my trip with sunwing at flight Centre at Erin mill mall with Steven ....I loved how sunwing makes sure you are ok at every step of the way as I was a solo traveler.i had a total of four and a half days at royalton .i stayed in room 502,which was nice but the door in the back wasn’t closed probably so it got cold at night. Also got a lot of bits from a insect ...it wasn’t mosquitos.I booked two excursions with sunwing rep Michael which was awesome....I paid $144 and did a day trip to Havana .it was a four hour drive and we had stops for breakfast and lunch.also there is a bathroom on the bus. I also did a park hiking excursion and I paid $77. Both excursions were awesome.i loved cuba and was so happy I made this my first solo destination. Oh, if your a Muslim cuba is sad for food the food at he royalton is soso breakfast is awsome but everything is kinda sad.
