The Royalton Cayo Santa Maria is a gem of a resort, located outside of Cuba's capital. The resort has a great array of pools and the grounds are well-maintained. Resort staff is incredibly hospitable, pleasant, and attentive. This is a great budget resort for couples and adults who want to experience the luxury of what Cuba has to offer without having to splurge.
We arrived at The Royalton, last week, and were pleasantly surprised when several of the resort personnel warmly greeted us with “Welcome back!” And, we were only commencing our second visit to the resort. It took only one visit, in July 2016, to convince us to make this our regular annual summer destination. The staff are top-notch and go out of their way to make sure you are well taken care of. One evening we returned to our room earlier than usual, breaking our "normal routine", and our butler, Lester, called our room to make sure everything was all right. The resort is absolutely stunning and the grounds are immaculately kept. We noticed many changes and upgrades, including the opening of Eggsellence for air conditioned a la carte lunches and the refurbished beach and pool bars. The beach: Ah, it was beautiful, as per usual, with glassy turquoise water and soft sand. We had “green flag” days for the entire week.Getting shade by the pool is still the game played by the early bird ... but there is more than enough on the beach, especially with replacement of many of the beach palapas. Our evenings always ended at the piano bar in the lobby, sipping Torres Brandy ten-year old, Chivas Regal twelve-year old, and wonderful cocktails and coffees.Memories are made and friendships are rekindled at The Royalton Cayo Santa Maria.
This beach front resort has to be hands down the best beach that I've ever seen. I'm 6'2" tall and went to the beach to enjoy the ocean. I stood in the water mid chest deep and I could see my feet clear as day. One of the nights during my stay a storm rolled in and the very next day the water was clear as if there was no storm. The food on the other hand was horrawful( horrible +awful) on 2 occasions I ordered a steak and both times they were 90% raw. No options to choose from . I'm a fat man at heart, I want to eat and drink when I'm on VACATION and you couldn't........ 5 stars for the beach and resort in whole. 2stars for the food
My husband and I visited for our anniversary and were personally greeted by management several times (Jose Luis & Lucky). They kept checking in and made an effort to get to know us. Our butlers, Alexis & Anna provided phenomenal service with a smile and organized special breakfasts and dinners as well as an in-room surprise for our anniversary. The restaurant staff were excellent as well, including Yasimy who greeted us upon entry and Richar, our main waiter. We got to know both of them on a personal level and they paid extra attention to my lactose allergy.
The resort is very nice, the beach is superb, the cubans are very friendly, but the food was absolutely horrible. There are no buffet, the snack bar is ''à la carte'', the quality of the food is a joke and you have to waste ''at least'' an hour before you get your so called food. There are two restaurant ''à la carte'' on site which serve the same menu. Me and my husband have never been starved that much. The other ''à la carte'' restaurants are next door resort ''The Memories''. We were able to book one evening and the food was a bit better. However, you have to take a shuttle to go there. I will unfortunately never go back to Cuba. As a bonus, many visitors got sick, plus a couple had cockroaches in their bungalow and got relocated. I saw many of them around the pool area at night. Think twice before booking!
My husband and I spent the last week of our trip to Cuba in this hotel and it was absolutely delightful. One of the true highlights were the staff who were amazing. Our butlers Diego and Mario always seemed to be available and eager to please, Dayana in the upper pool bar was marvellous, Eddy in the Lounge bar always helpful and the lovely Maylin at the snack bar - all of you contributed to making our stay fantastic - thank you. Walking through the immaculately kept grounds of the hotel everyone takes the time to say hello to you.A great deal has been made of bugs (mosquitos?). We did not have any problems at all. During the day there was no issue that we noticed and as soon as they came out at night we made sure we were wearing repellant. I wasn't bitten once.We visited in the middle of June which I understand is just into the quiet season. There were no problems getting cabanas at the quieter pool and no problems getting an umbrella on the beach. Some of the beach umbrellas do not offer a great deal of shade due to the drift in of sand - but the new manager who arrived during our stay said that they were going to replace these. We spent most of our time relaxing by the pool or on the beach and the staff are very attentive coming around regularly to offer drinks. At lunch time the beach bar cooks the most amazing tacos and these are also delivered to guests on the beach. The beach - fantastic. The sea - unbelievably warm and the most amazing blue. Just heavenly. Quite shallow so it was possible to walk out quite a long way. The upper pool area did not seem to be used very often and was great for swimming lengths. We did not use the lower pool area which tended to be busier and noisy. We stayed in bungalow 3 which was a good location - away from the lower pool area and as we were on the top floor we could see the sea. The air con was fantastic - thank goodness. Very comfortable bed and pillows, good quality linen. The bathroom was also very well appointed. The cleaning service was very efficient. Towels for the beach were changed in our room every evening - although you were also able to change them at a booth near the pool. Lots of bottled water, beer and soft drinks. We also came back to a bottle of rum one evening and a bottle of sparkling wine another evening! Mario and Diego were our butlers on alternate days. Like ninjas they appeared every morning out of thin air to check if we were ok, having a good time, did we need anything. We are quite self sufficient travellers and I felt we were letting them down from not having anything for them to do for us!!The musicians which play in the restaurants and the bar in the evening are extra ordinary - so much talent. On Friday evening we were on the beach quite late when the staff appeared to set up some tables and bring down sparkling wine - musicians appeared and anyone left on the beach was invited to have a glass of sparking wine and to sit and listen to the marvellous musicians as they played music whilst the sun set. Fabulous.Wifi is an issue all over Cuba and only available if you buy the government internet cards which costs 1.50 CUCS for an hour. The only place you could access at the hotel was in the lobby area. We got into the habit of going for a morning coffee in the lobby area - downloading newspapers and catching up if needed and then not bothering for the rest of the day. It was quite nice to be cut off!Why only 4 stars? Unfortunately the food. The best food we had was at the beach bar at lunchtime (tacos) and the amazing barbecue which sets up once in a while next to the snack bar. The meat and fish cooked on the barbecue was incredible but no one seemed to eat it so once the lunchtime cook was finished a mound of barbecued meat was simply left for flies. I hope the staff were allowed to take it home. Breakfast - we had this once and then did not bother for the rest of the trip. It was not of very good quality and the lovely fresh fruit was left uncovered for flies to feast on. Evening meals - not great - I think it is a shame that the restaurants try for an international cuisine when it would be much better to cook cuban food. The staff in the restaurants seem very proud of the food which is great - but it is just dreadful. When we left my husband commented that he had never looked forward to airplane food before. However, the service was very good on the whole. One night the air con stopped working in one of the restaurants and the whole evening service was moved to a restaurant in the pueblo without a hitch. Incredible. There was a lovely lady who was in charge of entertainment. I did feel sorry for her since it seemed that most people did not want to do anything but relax! She did, however, offer great foot massages during the healthy hour of the day!We had a lovely restful time here and would go back again. It would be interesting to see how things change under the new management.
