Royalton Cayo Santa Maria

The Royalton Cayo Santa Maria is a gem of a resort, located outside of Cuba's capital. The resort has a great array of pools and the grounds are well-maintained. Resort staff is incredibly hospitable, pleasant, and attentive. This is a great budget resort for couples and adults who want to experience the luxury of what Cuba has to offer without having to splurge.
It was our 10th time at the Royalton resort. It has become our second home for our vacations. Obviously we return there because we love this paradise, the beautiful beach, it's à la carte restaurants and its impeccable service. Their best features are the hotel personnel who put their hearts into making our stay memorable. Special thanks to our butler Noelvis who makes a mission out of taking care of us. In September 2017, we were evacuated because all the Cayo Santa Maria resorts were being closed as hurricane Irma was approaching. We were impressed with all the hotel staff that showed such commitment. while preparing the hotel shutdown they continued their excellent service and were worrying about our safety. We hopped on the last bus leaving the hotel and the hotel directors even joined us for the transfer to Varadero. We were to leave the next day to fly back home. Erasmo Félix Lopez, José Luis Meja, and Billy Chapman ( the 3 directors) supported us during the bus ride and also throughout our overnight stay at the Memories Varadero. It was as if the Royalton spirit had come with us. We wanted to give them our best thanks because they inspired calm and trust during this period filled with uncertainty. The Royalton clients were pampered considering the circumstances. Caroline Lessard and David Thibodeau join us to honour all the Royalton employees for their commitment and courage. We are definitely spending our next vacation at the Royalton Cayo Santa Maria. Pierre Légo and Magalie Lessard
Second week food was not near a 5 star rating. Even a 4 star for cuba! Been to Cuba many times. The beach was always bust like Veradera which isn't what I prefer. The beach is shared by many resorts. It was a nice sandy beach. But we have decided to go elsewhere this winter.
This is the second time I have been to Santa Clara. I had stayed at the Melia Cayo Santa Maria. It was an amazing experience and had no complaints. Based on other reviews, The Royalton was ranked HIGHER than the Melia. The first point I want to bring up; the food. Now, I know it's Cuba, and the food is never really good, but this was the first time that I actually had a terrible experience. There was no variety in the food we could have (buffet style as most Cuban resorts) and whatever the resort did have, it wasn't nearly eatable. I'm allergic to pork and don't eat seafood and that is all they had on the menu. I tried the chicken one night and it was super stale and over cooked. The resort was missing that Cuban vibe - we wanted authentic Cuban food. We had to threaten to leave the resort before the cook decided to make us a separate Cuban plate. The description of the hotel mentioned that there were specialty restaurants - there weren't. The waiters were very slow (we didn't get our food before half an hour after ordering) and often forgot our orders. Next topic: entertainment. I have never been to a resort that had little to NO entertainment. I had to practically beg the crew to play some hip and exciting music. During the entire week, I think there were 3 games. The days are very long and very boring without good music and entertainment. The evening shows were very short and there wasn't enough space for everyone to see it. Another aspect that made my stay unpleasant was the mosquito situation. I understand that the location and time of year has a lot to do with it - but the resort wasn't taking higher measures to keep them away. The truck with the repellant came around twice a day. I've been to resorts that had someone come around once an hour. Very unpleasant to not be able to stay outside and enjoy the night due to being eaten alive by mosquitoes. We couldn't even enjoy a walk to the Gaviota Plaza due to the mosquitoes - extremely unpleasant. Although there was a lot of bad, we still had some good times. My sister's Butler Alexis was incredible. He took care of my boyfriend and I extremely well, even though we weren't his responsibility. He went above and beyond to make sure we were somewhat happy. Naila at the Senses Restaurant also went above and beyond to make sure we were always well served. And lastly, Liz and Yuri from the entertainment team were excellent! Even though the resort didn't allow much entertainment, they always came around to make sure we were okay. They took the time to hang with us and make us laugh. They honestly made our days at the pool much better. If you want a beautiful resort and an amazing beach, this hotel is it - but do not expect anything else to be extraordinary

Overall experience was very good. The staff was very friendly...butlers, waiters and management. They went out of their way to accommodate you. The resort was well maintained. The rooms were well kept and very spacious. The beach was breathtaking...one of the most beautiful beaches my wife and I have been to. The food was good...did not get sick! Will definitely consider coming back again. I would like to thank Riccardo Merlo for his professionalism and his availability. It was truly a pleasure!Alfredo (Toronto)
