Royalton Cayo Santa Maria

The Royalton Cayo Santa Maria is a gem of a resort, located outside of Cuba's capital. The resort has a great array of pools and the grounds are well-maintained. Resort staff is incredibly hospitable, pleasant, and attentive. This is a great budget resort for couples and adults who want to experience the luxury of what Cuba has to offer without having to splurge.
There won't be a problem with people not liking the cats anymore. They were all basically loaded into a sack by the gardeners and taken away to be killed. Not a nice thing to see happening in a so called 5* hotel. Wouldn't visit again.
Generally: We enjoyed our visit. As others have said, this resort is lovely with well maintained spotless grounds and rooms and the staff is exceptional. Although not expected or needed, their command of English (and I think French too) is very good if you’re worried about that sort of thing when you travel to another country. The beach is not really wide but long and very clean with powdery sand. We wouldn’t call it “the” top beach in the Caribbean but it is excellent. There is no rocky patch at the surf line so entering the sea is easy and an average size person can walk out on the smooth sand for at least 100 meters and only be up to their chest. It was a bit rough during our stay but no real undertow to worry about. Although the towel game is played for the sun beds around the pool, there are more than enough loungers at the pools and beach to allow everyone (and then some) to have a spot. While some of the palapas are a bit drifted in by sand, you can get shade almost anywhere when needed. Beach drink service was excellent – those guys work so hard. The butler service at this resort is one of the best we have found in our travels. They are always visible and available but not intrusive and filled every request promptly. Senior managers were also out and about talking to guests which was a nice touch that we appreciated. The entertainment team was engaging but not pushy. There are top notch musicians in the restaurants and the evening shows are some of the best we have ever seen at AI resorts (we’ve never seen a synchronized swimming show before let alone one that is so professionally done). More importantly however make sure that you also go for the pre-shows. The opening acts could be the main event at any other resort. Well done by management in their booking choices! But… (there’s always a but):We are experienced Caribbean travelers but have never been to Cuba before, and we’d heard the repeated refrain from others that you don’t go there for the food. Well, this is a 5 star resort, and if this is the best they can do, “don’t go there for the food” LOL. We fully appreciate that some things that might be hard to obtain in Cuba, but I think that might be used too often as an excuse for inconsistency and poor planning by restaurant management. If you don’t have something that’s fine, but not being prepared for meal times is not about supplies. The salad bar/breakfast bars were not set up for as long as 45 minutes after opening on several occasions. While there are two good BBQ’s running vaguely around lunch time near the Sunset Grill, neither started at the same time on any given day. On one day they only had enough shrimp for about 4 guests. Hint – if you don’t have enough of a product for a reasonable amount of people then don’t offer it that day. Similarly, if you are almost out of orange juice, do not (repeat) do not water it down until it is just cloudy water (you’re not fooling anyone). Some of the steaks were OK, but on one occasion I could still see the whip marks from where the jockey was hitting it. And come on, no 5 star resort should be using powdered mashed potatoes in an a la carte restaurant. Better to have no potatoes at all (and they had real potatoes in other restaurants so it wasn’t about availability). One laugh we had was the same dessert they called chocolate cake early in the week was called tiramisu later on in the week (it was in fact like a Sarah Lee frozen cake). And who runs out of white wine or bread at a restaurant at mid day? I think in fact they weren’t out, it just wasn’t ready yet (or no one bothered to go to the storeroom and get some more) in time for the sittings. Each time we faced this situation the servers were clearly embarrassed suggesting no one in the kitchen told them about the issue in advance. So, food (average at best), but restaurant planning and consistency gets a fail. And… insects:The resort is built on a sand bar surrounded by mangrove swamp so insects are inevitable (although there were none in the room). There are few palm trees or other vegetation common to other island destinations. It’s interesting to see but not especially pretty outside the planted grounds-keeping. Mosquitoes were few, but it seems that there are what we in Canada would call no-see-ums. Really itchy bites didn’t show up until we got home so we don’t know if they are on the beach or around the pools and lobby at night. Since we didn’t know we were being bitten, we weren’t going to use repellent for no reason. They do fog for bugs, but here’s a hint to management: perhaps it’s not a good idea to run the fog machine truck when there are people lying around the pool and eating in the open air restaurant. Seriously, that happened one day for some reason even though the fogging seemed to be at night most of the time. So, overall this is a very nice resort and you’ll like it. If you’ve been to lower star Cuban resorts we imagine you will love it. If you’ve been to 5 star resorts in other countries you might be (a little) underwhelmed. However, restaurant management, especially for consistency is the only major issue we suggest needs significant improvement.
We were at Royalton for the 4th time from March 24- April 7. It’s very safe to say we love coming here and plan on returning. When we first arrived we were welcomed back with a warm smile and a big hug from everyone we saw. It’s amazing how with all the people that go through here that they remember us. We had asked for Lester to be our butler and he was there waiting for us. Along with our other butler Diana we had 2 of the very best. Anything we would need they make sure we have. While we were there Eggsellence closed down for renovations and Aurora in the market was open for dinner. In our 4 years coming here we have never had a problem. All 3 restaurants were great. Once again the returning guest’s dinner was spectacular! The new bbq at the Sunset was awesome. When we first got there things around the resort were looking a bit worn. That changed quickly. While we were they we saw updates being done daily, fresh paint everywhere. The whole resort is absolutely beautiful. Our coconut tree that we planted 2 years ago has grown so much! The beach is still the most beautiful beach we have ever seen. The palapas need some work, which I am told will happen this summer. Our room was always spotless, thanks to Lisandra and had fresh towels and supplies. The view is beautiful. Our number one reason for returning remains the same. The people. They are the reason we call Royalton our Cuban home. Lester and Diana thank you for always being there and making sure we had everything we needed. Coming to our room after a relaxing day in the sun to a bubble bath and wine was so nice. Lobby bartenders Eberto, Lily, Yorky and Luis. Poolside and beach bartenders, Raxon at the beach. From the entertainment team, Nerelys. You are always so sweet and kind. It’s been my pleasure to get to know you. Super Mario… you not only get to know everyone there, everyone comes to you. So many guests have told me Mario stories about all the things you do. We are proud to call you our special friend. Royalton Cayo Santa Maria remains our number one resort and we can’t wait to come back to our Cuban home.
Stayed here in December 2016 with my boyfriend. We were excited to spend the holidays on the beach, and the Royalton made our stay amazing. We loved everything about this resort - the staff, pristine pools, calm beach, rooms. Everything was perfect. We loved our butlers and they managed to arrange 2 special nights for us as we were celebrating an anniversary. We loved the Christmas / new year celebrations as well. All in all would definitely recommend for couples looking for quiet & relaxing vacations.
Just returned from this resort (third visit). From the manager Frederico to the chamber maid Jaime the staff is incredible. Super Mario is always out and about asking if everything is OK. Dany the concierge met all expectations. The animation team Nerelys, Leuris, Javier and Yuri keeping guests busy and engaged. Wait staff in restaurants were attentive and personable. The musicians who play were world class. Thank you Alejandro(violin) and Luis (guitar). Trio Cubanisimo. The solo show by Esther was astonishing and the piano players (Aysel & Gloria) in the bar are excellent. The hotel is in the process of doing some renovations and provisions were made to accommodate guests. The food selection was good but there were days were basics were unavailable (you are in Cuba). We hope to return to our home away from home in 2018. Eric y Jane
