Royalton Cayo Santa Maria

The Royalton Cayo Santa Maria is a gem of a resort, located outside of Cuba's capital. The resort has a great array of pools and the grounds are well-maintained. Resort staff is incredibly hospitable, pleasant, and attentive. This is a great budget resort for couples and adults who want to experience the luxury of what Cuba has to offer without having to splurge.
Stayed at this resort with my partner March of this year. The resort was beautiful. Great beach, great pools, great bars. The food was not so great, I actually got pretty sick for a couple days but recovered ok.Turns out you can ask your butler for lobster dinner in advance for the dinners (for no additional cost)- I highly encourage you to do this if you are into lobsters. All the meals were a le carte, therefore you never know what you will really get. I do not encourage you to eat off the buffet (snacks) that is laid out as it is unpredictable how long it's been out there for throughout the day- especially the one in the snack bar, because flies will swarm the food. Notice there will be a bbq at the back of the snack bar at lunch for a couple hours a few days of the week, this is where you can get great bbq'd meat. The grill will be on for a couple of hours a day as well, so I encourage you to take advantage of that. The staffs did not speak great english, but tried to be helpful.Towel- towel exchange is often out of fresh towels. So exchange early, or ask for extra blue towels to be brought to your room at night so you have extra towels to use during the day. Latte/ Capps are the best at the coffee bar in the lobby. The front desk will never break your money for tips, you can often ask the bar staffs to break a 10 for you here and there- because that's the only way to have change.Internet- oh my gosh, this was the most painful part of my trip because I must check work emails etc. Getting connected was the most difficult part, but once you are connected, it is ok. Generally speaking though, I think the internet billed me more than what I used. So you have to go buy a internet card at the front, I think it was about $2 for 60 mins of usage. Depending on the weather, it may never connect for the day.You have the option of making reservations in the restaurants at the connecting resort (all ages)... but I will advise you not to, because the food is no better, if anything- much worse than Royalton. Once we went to the Italian restaurant, and actually waited about 1.5hrs and never left, because the service was quite slow... I get it, it's a busy place. If you do choose to go, just go to the front and they will arrange for drop off/pick up. It's quite efficient. Room- the rooms did not have a liquor dispenser- which is ok, but this also means you can not have a drink at night. Room service was decent/ on time. The cleaning staffs were very kind and friendly and did a great job. We initially did not book oceanview because it was unavailable online. But we did get to upgrade it at the front desk on arrival- it was about $250 for the week, which was very decent. In terms of ocean view, it's not super close, because there is a ramp to the ocean... so any "ocean view" room is from quite afar. Entertainment- it's a quiet resort, so the entertainment were for about 2-3hrs each night at the front... it was not super exciting, I would say it's for the older crowd. Generally speaking, it's a very luxurious, quiet, relaxing resort. It's somewhere you would want to go if you really want to relax in paradise. It's not for party goers or people that loves to socialize/ get smashed and have a wild time.
We went to the resort mid June with the girlfriend and we honestly have to say it was an amazing experience.Very peaceful and quiet hotel. We were assigned a personal butler which was a unique offering. We had a small anniversary, but they went an extra mile to make it special by setting up a flower covered bath, in-room iced champagne, and even a poem. In restaurants we were also treated to some special extras with the help of the butler. When we arrived late at night and were hoping at best for the ketchup and fries at a snack bar, oh how we were surprised to get a two page menu with gourmet items at the said snack bar.Ocean was awesome, flawless beach and warm water, no seaweed or rocks in site. Our room was big and modern, only concern we had that our "oceanview" was partially obstructed by the treeline. Very clean hotel grounds. Even fresh flowers in the common bathrooms.Staff was friendly and accommodating, always ready to help.Great food, very tasteful poolside BBQ, good selection of drinks. And alcohol quality was premium. Non-motorized water sports are available.Overall I have to say it is one of the best Caribbean experiences.
We have just returned from a fourteen day holiday at this hotel. Our stay was very relaxing. Our room was ground floor and had no real view but this didn't matter as we only used the room to sleep. The hotel itself is small and very well maintained. The staff are very friendly and polite. Our room was cleaned daily and we also had clean towels daily. Our butlers were great Ana and Alexis always there if you needed them but never intrusive. The food was a little disappointing on times and the menus were the same each evening. We spoke to the new boss and a few nights later the menu changed but then staid the same for the rest of the holiday. We did eat at the Italian restaurant at Memories twice and our meal was very good on both occasionsOur one big disappointment was a meal in the Aurora restaurant when our friends and ourselves waited nearly 1 hour between courses. The waiters were very apologetic we then realised that a group of 12 spanish speaking people were being attended to before anyone else other guests also commented on this.We did report this to various people some of whom avoided us and some were very apologetic. We didn't let it spoil our holidays but did suggest they improve their service skills. The management assured us changes will be made.I must agree with other people that the butlers are excellent. We did manage to get to Havana and suggest that if you can visit there it is well worth it.
just came back yesterday. Well, here is our review. My husband and I are well travelled and have gone to Cuba more than 10 times, so we understand all the difficulties and somewhat not comparable to other countrys. So we arrive at 2pm and very hungry. We arrive to the reception and no smiles. We finally go to our room. Great room. Bed is so comfortable and big room. Dont start looking to hard because you see that many little big details are botched. Exemple, cocking in the shower all smudged, the rails barely hold, the tub is stained...but hey, its Cuba. So finally we go to eat at the Snack Bar...guess what...no more onions, no potatoes, no hamburghers, no ice cream....so ok, a cheese sandwich. We go at the beach...beautifull beach. But again, the palapas have been swalloed by the sand. You have to crunch inside to just sit, but then, you are so uncomfortable its awfull. Finally, the waiter comes on the beach, almost annoyed, no smiles. By the way, we are big tippers. At the beach, the drinks are sooo small and tastless and in mini plastic tiny trowable cheap plastic cups.We are both allergic to shrimps. Their are only two restaurants...the menu needs to change. The only two soups had shrimps and the rest of the menu sea food. There should be a dress code. I cant beleive that still, men arrive in shorts and sandals for diner. You can also eat at the Memories hotel...italian was fun, food, ambiance, great service , efficient, with a smile. But then, a ray of light. A new manager called Jose Luis, was making the rounds of the tables at diner to get comments of the clients. I think he got an ear full. So he got to us and we politly expressed our disapointments. Well in the last 4 days of our stay, this gentlemen turned things around. You could see him everyday, all day and night, pointings things, making certain the guest were happy, changed the menu, staff smiled and moved faster. Because of him, we started to enjoy and relax. Thank you Jose Luis, we hope they let you do all the changes necessary to upgrade this hotel, its quite a challenge.
My partner and I have just returned home from a wonderful weeks holiday at the Royalton, Cayo Santa Maria. Where to start.... This holiday was by far the best holiday I have ever experienced. This was our very first trip to Cuba and I have no doubt we will return in the near future. The hotel was was fabulous. The rooms are of an exellent standard, they are cleaned everyday they have everything you would expect when you are expecting luxury. I found myself wanting to return to my room once the cleaning staff had been in as they always left a little suprize in the form of little characters made with towels and a lovely note wishing my partner and I a wonderful holiday everyday. The staff are constantly on hand to cater to your needs too.The little touches make a big difference. The pools are beautiful and the staff are always on hand to bring you drinks and offer assistance at all times. However the beech is something else.It really is incredible the sand is pure white and the water very blue and warm and all within a few minutes walk from the hotel.I have never seen a beech as incredibly beautiful as that one. All the staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly. The food was standard but we never had an issue with it there is something for everyone. The hotel does receive criticism for the food however, speaking with the manager about this there are plans in place to make things better keeping in mind that it is very hard to export different cuisines into the country the hotel is currently working hard to make the required adjustments in this area. The bulter service you receive is outstanding Ana was fantastic as were all the other members of staff however, Alexis was our butler for most of the week and he was fab. Alexis is the most kind, humble man who will do anything to ensure your needs are met. He really did make the holiday for us in particular the planning of our meals and the champagne flower bath was amazing. Alexis this is a message for you: YOU MADE OUR STAY AT THE ROYALTON EVEN BETTER. You are a very kind, humble man and we will miss you. However watch out for us in the near future as I aim to have a tree planted at some point. Thank you for everything you did for us, take care of yourself all our love from David and Louise.Last but not least, my advice would be to take plenty of insect repellent as they are a nightmare.
