Our Opinion
A great boutiquestyle hotel that's right in the middle of Havana Vieja. It'scharming with lots of ambiance.
Ernest Hemingway's favourite hotel and the most sought after accommodation in the city. Amidst Old Havana narrow cobble stone streets, this little jewel has been lovingly restored.
Location: In the heart of Old Havana. 25 min from Airport.

Hemingway's Havana.

When in Havana, you at least gotta do some Hemingway. I had a newspaper article about a guy who did Hemingway, and I followed his steps upon arriving there. So I had a Mojito (I've drank better ones in Philly) and admired history. There's pictures of Hemingway all over the hotel. I did not sleep over since I was staying in a casa particular, but I did enjoy the scenery of Old Havana.

Stuck in Time

When you're in that hotel, you feel like you're stuck in time. Pretty much vintage style everywhere. Magic and beautiful place with original classic elevator that takes you upstairs where you can find beautiful restaurant. Also, there's a view at Old Town. Magic place it's worth seeing.

Antique charm with modern hiccups

The interior of this hotel is beautiful, marble floors, high ceilings, sturdy furniture. Breakfast in the rooftop cafe with lovely views. Plumbing works [not trivial in Cuba], located in the old city, surrounded by restored 17th & 18th C. buildings, pedestrian streets. More convenient if you can walk the staircase, as the elevator is manually operated and bells at some floors were not working at the time. Bus or taxi can't get to hotel, nearest parking is along the harbor channel, so luggage can be a hassle, tho' elevator was available for delivering to rooms. Like many places in Cuba, the lobby floor has changes in level, my roommate sprained her ankle when she didn't see one.

Utterly disgraceful

This is supposed to be one of the top hotels in Havana. I cannot imagine why. We had trouble from the outset when we couldn't open the door of our 4th floor room. After much pushing and scraping and noise, we did finally gain entrance. Switched on a table light, which flikkered and died. Found another light. Problem with first lamp was that the switch had come apart and the wires were poking out. Lucky not to be electrocuted. My wife took a shower but the water was only tepid. I had to extricate her from the shower/bath as the screen had stuck shut. Shortly after I lifted the toilet lid and seat, only to find that each was held in place by a single bolt, and in danger of falling to the floor. There was no bath mat or hand towels..hI ran down to reception (the lift took ages) to remonstrate with staff and talk to the manager. He was out, of course. Young woman said she would send a chambermaid. I told her what was needed was an electrician and joiner. She seemed unconcerned, but upon my insistence, made a few notes. She said that all the rooms had sticking doors. It was just how things were. More towels were provided and the switch was fixed the following day.Anything else ? Breakfast buffet offerings on the roof terrace were uncovered. Dinner was a dull affair and drinks the most expensive we had encountered throughout Cuba.On the plus side, the waiters and lobby bar staff were pleasant and eager to please.Ernest Hemingway lived here on the fifth floor. There were always plenty of tourists queuing for the lift for a viewing. Hence residents with cases and bags had to queue too - there is only one lift. All in all, a shocking (nearly) experience. Avoid !

Once upon a time this would have been the most wonderful place to stay...... HOWEVER, having just returned from Cuba following a surprise Birthday celebration that my husband put together for me with 18 of our friends all I can say is we were all totally appalled. Now I can hear you all say ah well that's the charm of Cuba. Wrong. We spent two weeks travelling around Cuba and nowhere else did we encounter such a filthy, unfriendly place. The staff at the hotel, bar a couple, couldn't have cared less. There was one particular woman on reception who was possibly the rudest receptionist we have ever encountered anywhere we have stayed in the world. The first night we had dinner on the roof terrace. The view was great but that was the highlight. As far as the meal was concerned there was no menu as we were 20 and were offered either Meat or Fish. It consisted of a few strands of grated cabbage, two limp beans and three slices of cucumber. That was followed by a soup which reminded me sadly of the bottom of my washing up bowl having washed up after dinner for 12. I won't bore you with the remainder of the meal because it makes me feel queasy to even think about it. All I can say is the following night we had the most delicious dinner at La Guarida. As far as the rooms were concerned...... ! We had a room on the corner which compared to the others was a palace. Two of us had these Junior Suites the rest were scattered over a couple of floors. The smell of damp everywhere was the first thing that hit you. The plumbing was non existent. We stayed there for 3 nights and we had to flush our loo using the plastic inside of the bin full of water. This happened in most of the rooms. None of us had a plug for the bath despite asking for one. However, quite frankly the bathroom and bath were so nasty I really wouldn't have wanted to attempt it. Don't look under the bed! Unfortunately I dropped the lid of a bottle and it became lost in a sea of 'debris' under the bed. This hotel is in the most perfect location and could be lovely and I'm not talking 5* deluxe. This is Cuba after all. Unfortunately I gather it is State run which probably explains a lot. Fortunately however the remainder of our visit to Cuba was wonderful. We just unfortunately got off to a dreadful start at the Ambos Mundos.
