Hotel Ambos Mundos
- What's Included
Our OpinionA great boutique style hotel that's right in the middle of Havana Vieja. It's charming with lots of ambiance.
I won't take points off, but the hotel is your typical older Havana property in the usual state of disrepair. Leaking faucets, stains and dirty walls and old 50s type furniture. That being said, the staff wasn't the friendliest, and it's on the busy Obispo street, so if your room faces that side, you will hear people, music and noise at all hours of the day and into the night. Price was rather expensive for what it offers. Mattress was comfortable. Maid service was nice. Elevator didn't work for most of our stay, and when it did, there was always a line of 10 - 15 people.
Having completed a cycling holiday staying in Casas we asked for a last minute upgrade on our last night. Agreed the price with our agent and taken there by taxi. Delighted to realise Ambos Mundos was the mystery hotel. Delight grew when we were taken to Room 406. This room is immediately below Hemingway's 511. It's a corner room with three large windows, two of which have small balconies. Probably the most nostalgic and historic room we have ever stayed in. Despite its location it has good sound insulation and very heavy full blackout curtains. Still not sure how we got given what I think is probably the best room in the hotel, one of life's pleasant surprises. We found the bell boy/lift operator great. The roof top bar is a particular favourite for tour operators on the other hand this did not effect us early in the morning or the evening. There are little things wrong hence not 5 Stars. However if we want the best location and the best nostalgia in Havana go here. If you can go for room 406.
This was our first hotel in Cuba, because we wanted to stay in the old city, this was one of the few hotels that was still available . It is a beautiful building full of memorabilia of Hemingway. The rooms are with TV and a/c, with bathroom en suite, but a bit somber, Our view (room 418) was towards backyard but a least it was quiet . Some rooms are small and dont have a window. Water supply was not always available (we were several hours without water) but that is a common problem in Cuba .You cant reach the Hotel by car, you have to walk 3 minutes from the entrance of the old city (Vieja) , but there are porters available to help with the luggage. The old style elevator is always occupied by people visiting the Hemingway museum on the 5th floor , so many times you have to use the stairs
The hotel is gorgeous and the historic value is wonderful re Hemingway's stay there. View from the rooftop is lovely but the food was awful Just go for drinks! The ability to use wifi is always a treat too.
We stopped here for several reasons, our airbnb was right down the street, it is in a happening area of Old Havana and Earnest Hemingway was fond of the place so it was on my list. The lobby has great, old tile and pictures, I wish that someone would explain that cleaning and maintaining pictures would keep them from getting moldy and being ruined? The elevator, 91 years old is fascinating, works well and not even scary to ride. Take it to the rooftop bar. I found the view to be wonderful. Part of it overlooks a crumbling city with a glimpse into the harsh reality of everyday Cuban life and the view from the bar terrace overlooks the bay and the lighthouse over to the cruise ships. We had a dinner that was expensive for what we had been spending, $25US each for a four course meal, fish and lobster, salad, soup and a desert. I thought it was good. The food in Cuba is generally not wonderful so i was happy! It also included a drink, can't beat that!
