Our Opinion
A great boutique style hotel that's right in the middle of Havana Vieja. It's charming with lots of ambiance.
Overview
Ernest Hemingway's favourite hotel and the most sought after accommodation in the city. Amidst Old Havana narrow cobble stone streets, this little jewel has been lovingly restored.

Location: In the heart of Old Havana. 25 min from Airport.

mixed feelings about this special hotel

Ambos Mundos is a classic of pre-Revolution Cuba. Throughout the entire hotel there are memories and tributes to Hemingway; literally, a museum. A birdcage elevator awaits to take guests up - complete with bellhop - but coming down is another complication. My husband ended up racing down the stairs in order to tell the bellhop we'd like him to take the elevator up to pick up our luggage. Otherwise, its easier to walk the marble staircase. Up on the roof is a bar and restaurant and perhaps you will find it easier than we did (as hotel guests) to be allowed to eat or drink there - as well as the bar in the lobby. For reasoned unknown, they wouldn't serve us - even when plenty of tables were available - we were told 'not now.' That was the case in the bathroom as well - maybe there was water, maybe there wasn't. While that's not necessarily uncommon in the Caribbean, a little heads up would be nice - instead of a blank stare. The bellhop and the housekeepers were the most caring of the staff - genuinely helpful. The room was awesome - 306 - a corner room with cathedral ceilings and a queen size bed. And oddly enough - a flat screen TV. With little interest in watching TV when there was always a street show on the street below - we did venture one evening to experience Cuban TV - and lo, we found Bernie Sanders on CNN. A nice mini bar was ample with bottled water, beer, and Cuban rum - and priced fairly. Hemingway's room is still intact and is a museum of his time in the hotel and is opened mid-day daily. When staying here or many of the others in Viejo Havana be warned that your taxi cannot drive up to the door - you will be dropped off at the taxi stand and you'll have to lug your baggage to the hotel yourself - so pack accordingly. Would I stay here again? Possibly; but with another hotel down the street that made us feel welcomed won our hearts easily.

Good location

Spent a few nights here at the end of a birding trip to the interior. The lobby area is large. This is good since it is often a madhouse of tour groups arriving, departing etc. It has a very good location in the pedestrian area. Breakfast buffet was abundant but of average , at best, quality. Hemingway's room is on the fifth floor and has been turned into a mini-museum. If you are a guest of the hotel you cn enter for free, others pay 2CUC. It gets a lot of traffic during the day so it would be best to avoid having a room in the vicinity of it. The best aspect of the hotel is the rooftop bar and restaurant. The view is very nice and the over-all setting comfortable

Very busy hotel

Arrived at this hotel on NYE after a long day and a flight. Had only one lift that could carry 4 people and their bags, so took some time to get us to our rooms. Situation not helped by literally swarms of people trying to get to the roof top terrace for a drink, who were mostly non resident. Room was a good size, with efficient air conditioning, but was very noisy as on the street side of the building. Hot water took an age to come through, then remained only lukewarm. Difficult to get a drink at either bar as so many people sitting in reception area to get a wifi signal from the hotel, same on roof terrace and outside on the street all around the hotel. Such a shame as the hotel is really well situated and could be potentially a wonderful place to spend a couple of nights in Havana. It has a lot of memorabilia about Earnest Hemingway as he stayed in room 501 of this hotel, but needs to be smartened up a little. Breakfast was buffet style with a chef doing eggs to order, plenty to choose from.

An interesting Hotel with a Great Central Location

Conveniently located in Havana central, this was an elegant old hotel. The elevator was a work of 1920’s art, but unfortunately it broke several times. If this happens to you, there is another elevator behind the scenes for staff. They are happy to let you use this if climbing many flights of stairs is a challenge. Our room was in the central core of the hotel. It was comfortable with amazingly high ceilings. The bed was comfortable and the shower was hot. The AC did not work well and our room was unpleasantly warm. Ask for a room with a window to the outside. These not only have a better view, but the AC seems to work fine. The vistas from the rooftop bar are just lovely at sunset. There is much to see and do within easy walking distance of this Hotel. We found the staff to be very nice, helpful and hardworking. In Cuba, as in other third world countries, we endeavor to enjoy the cultural vicissitudes and idiosyncrasies of the accommodations, transportation and meals. No question that we are viewed as representatives of our country. We take this role seriously, always trying to be ambassadors and never the “ugly American”.

Rooftop terrace is superb!

We did not stay here but stumbled upon the rooftop terrace. It offers a buzzy vibe with great cocktails and a stunning panorama of Havana. There is also literary history with the Hemingway connection - not to be missed!
