Hotel Ambos Mundos
- What's Included
Our OpinionA great boutique style hotel that's right in the middle of Havana Vieja. It's charming with lots of ambiance.
Had a 3rd floor room quite large with high ceiling and dark wood furniture. Smelt rather musty but was very clean. Aged facilities in the bathroom (you get better in Travelodge)AC worked very well but was noisy at full blow.Hot water ~ get up very early or leave your shower until after midday.Breakfast on the 6th floor terrace, starts at 0700. Get there at that time to get the best coffee and warmest hot? food.Staff are very friendly some speak/understand English.Be prepared for the hourly cannon fire from the ramparts across the bay. (starts at 0700)The Otis lift is original and breaks down and fixed, frequently (the flight of stairs are long) and is used almost exclusively by visitors to Hemmingway's room 511 on the 5th floor constantly during the day.Preference is given to arriving guests with heavy cases. If travelling singly or as a couple and you need to get heavy cases down (against the flow of visitors in the lift) then either get a bell boy to do it or use a small service lift at the back, ask first.WiFi available in the lobby area as well as the rooftop 6th floor terrace. 1 hour cost 4.5 CuC, scratchcard available from reception desk. Don't expect fantastic speeds. You can get an hour for 2 CuC but then you have to queue with the locals at a telecoms shop further down Obispo.Light beer Crystal 3CuC about 4.5% ABV, darker version at 5.4%ABV Buccanero 3 CuC.Half bottle of local rum (good) 4CuC from the minibar.Room doors are opened via a card which is then put into a holder switch to turn on the room electrics (btw. don't expect all the sockets to have power to them!) - the card is also require to operate the digital safe. No instructions given on mine, but worked out ~ put in card tap in desired code, remove card and the lock will activate. To unlock, insert card, tap out code then remove card to open the lock, remember be quick as your card will be out of the holder switch and the light goes out after about 30 seconds!!Lighting in the room rather dim, not quite take a torch but getting there. The real selling point of this hotel is its' location. Don't be put off by the locals sitting on the pavement using the WiFi hotspot or the constant stream of visitors to Hemmingway's room.Several reasonable restaurants very close.I visited during the 9 day mourning period for Castro, so everything rather subdued. Very little if any street music and several restaurants refused to sell beer (wine available). So ask first if important to you.
At the end of a long day touring Havana, we stopped here for while to enjoy some drinks and the view. Lots of Hemingway history throughout, vintage looking elevator and stunning views...Mojitos were pretty good as well ;)
We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights whilst in Havana. We chose this hotel because of its history and it is just what you imagine of hotel in Havana to be.Location is great, right in the middle of the old town. Yes the hotel is old and has broken lifts and banisters and seen better days but this added to its charm for us.We had a small room with no window but had to move due to there being no hair dryer, second room was bigger with big doors to open. As Hemingway lived in this hotel it attracts tours so can get busy trying to get up to your room.Breakfast on the roof top lounge was fantastic, had to walk up all the stairs but worth it. Only issue we had was when we got dropped off our bags were loaded on a trolley to take us to the hotel as you cannot drive up to it, the porter demanded 5 euros when we got to the hotel, as it turned out he did not work for the hotel so beware. Overall really pleased we stayed in this hotel, loved the charm of it.
Located in the center of Habana Vieja (Old Havana), home to Ernest Hemingway for 7 years back 1930's. The whole building itself is like a museum, embedded with lots of pics and belongs of Hemingway. Very close to Plaza de Armas and Castillo de la Real Fuerza, you may find some interesting small shops to buy your souvenirs and fancy/good restaurants to eat at the O'Reilly st one block away.
The Location of this hotel couldn't be better but the service, the attitude, the facilities and the attitude could do with a sharp kick up the bum. We are a family who travels a lot and generally we are really chilled and grateful for the fact that we can travel and go to amazing places. This place was such a disappointment in such an AMAZING CITY.No hot water for 4 days. 'Compute says NO' attitude to everything. Staff looked bored, uninterested and surly. Real bummer.
