Our Opinion
A great boutiquestyle hotel that's right in the middle of Havana Vieja. It'scharming with lots of ambiance.
Ernest Hemingway's favourite hotel and the most sought after accommodation in the city. Amidst Old Havana narrow cobble stone streets, this little jewel has been lovingly restored.
Location: In the heart of Old Havana. 25 min from Airport.

Good Location, Shame about the room

The overwhelming positive for this hotel is its location in the heart of Havana Old Town, with lots of restaurants and cafes in close proximity and no more than a 15 minute walk through the charming back streets to all the attractions the old town has to offer. The rest of the hotel is average at best. Due to the layout of the building over 50% of the rooms do not have a window, this means the rooms feel small, dark and prison like. I would assume booking through an agent or booking a standard room, as we did, would result in being given one of these rooms whereas booking directly through the hotel or booking a superior room would result in a better room with the French door windows you see from the outside of the hotel. Due to the old traditional style of our room and the lack of window, it did make it difficult to look clean, especially the bathroom. That being said the bed was comfortable and we did sleep well, and were grateful for the effective air conditioning. There is no free wifi but a wifi card can be purchased from the lobby bar for 4.5 CUC for one hour. Breakfast was included in the room rate, served on the roof terrace with amazing views across the old town towards the fortress, it was a strange affair – I don’t think I have ever been to a breakfast buffet where cold burgers and cold pizza were among the items on offer. Alongside the strange cold selection were your standard breakfast juices, breads, fruit etc.Due to the hotel’s Hemingway link, the reception/lobby area is exceptionally busy with tour groups visiting the fifth floor Hemingway room, this does mean however that the only hotel lift, an old cage style lift with maximum capacity of around 6-8 people including the bell boy, is in high demand from both the guests with lots of luggage and the tour groups, on numerous occasions we gave up waiting and instead walked up the steep staircase to our room. One thing I feel I should point out is the check in time, our paperwork from the agent said 3pm, the hotel refused to let us check in before their check in time of 4pm, and they seem fairly strict with this. Overall, we could tolerate the room for the one night we stayed there, but based on the room we stayed in I would not stay here again, maybe if we had been given a room with a window it would have been easier to overlook the other downsides to this hotel, but alas that was not our experience.

Worth visiting to see the old fashioned elevator.

We visited this hotel to see the room where Hemingway spent much of his time. The cost to see the room was 5 CUCs per person and so we decided not to enter. When we first arrived, and tried to enter, we were told to wait outside until the current group finished. I got the idea that the docent let in groups at a time and then perhaps gave a talk on what you may see in the room. We were told that everything in the room was how Hemingway had left it. In addition to the room, the hotel is worth visiting for the old fashioned elevator and elevator operator. There is a bar/café on the roof with a great view.

Lovely property

We stayed there for one night only and were welcomed with warmth by the front desk and the bell-man was awesome. This property is 92 years old and is still beautiful. The elevator is so impressive...Nice room with a view on the streets of La Havana Vieja.Breakfast is served on the rooftop with a breathtaking view.We miss the place already...

Doesn't hold up to the historical value

We went there for the first days of our trip within Cuba. Sadly despite its History with Hemingway and all, it hasn't left a good impression on us. The location is very central in Habana Vieja, and you can reach all the famous sights within no time. (Currently there is some excavation nearby and you will have to get off the taxi on the main road, as every entry with a car is blocked. Just a short info for those who are going there.)Every day is a surprise in this hotel. Some members of the staff are very friendly, others (easy to find at the reception and in the restaurant) seem indifferent towards their guests. One day the breakfast is tasty and arranged very well and the following day it's not tasty anymore. (During our stay, the good days were the days when the tables were decorated with blue cloths). Also don't try the Mojitos in this hotel. You will get better ones anywhere else. The rooms were alright. Due to the age of the house expect some humidity within the rooms, which is not a problem for sleeping, because the AC is working very well, however if you plan to wash and dry your clothes within the rooms it may take a long time. Some benefits of staying here will be the great view from the rooftop terrace and the free entry and guide for the room of Ernest Hemingway in the 5th floor.

There are better places in Havana

My husband and I have been to Cuba 5 times in the last 6 years. We have family there and usually stay in Havana for a day or 2 before traveling around this wonderful island. We stayed at the Ambros Mundos twice in the last 4 years. We like the location and it is easy to book online. We will not be staying there again......The first time we went they tried to put us in an airless interior "closet". The bathroom light didn't work so we gave the guy helping us some money and he went downstairs and found us a beautiful corner room. This time we were given room #301. We entered to a rank moldy odor, no air conditioning, a bathroom wet from a leaky vent with a broken glass door. We called the front desk.... "Sorry, only interior rooms were available to switch, the air conditioning problem was hotel wide". Could we at least have a fan? No, no fans were available. Finally after several hours of sweating in our room with the windows open to the lively street (I love the music) we tramped downstairs and we're given keys to 2 vacant exterior rooms. Why they hadn't done this earlier I have no idea. One of these rooms was perfect.....well at least it had air conditioning. The moral here is Don't settle (and whatever you do don't stay in room 301) BUT there are MUCH better places to stay in Havana and I suggest finding one! Two positive notes...1. the location is great if you want to be in the thick of the restored, historic district.2. The breakfast on the roof is great.
