Our Opinion
A great boutiquestyle hotel that's right in the middle of Havana Vieja. It'scharming with lots of ambiance.
Overview
Ernest Hemingway's favourite hotel and the most sought after accommodation in the city. Amidst Old Havana narrow cobble stone streets, this little jewel has been lovingly restored.

Location: In the heart of Old Havana. 25 min from Airport.

DON'T STAY AT THE HOTEL AMBOS MUNDOS....... EVER!

Once upon a time this would have been the most wonderful place to stay...... HOWEVER, having just returned from Cuba following a surprise Birthday celebration that my husband put together for me with 18 of our friends all I can say is we were all totally appalled. Now I can hear you all say ah well that's the charm of Cuba. Wrong. We spent two weeks travelling around Cuba and nowhere else did we encounter such a filthy, unfriendly place. The staff at the hotel, bar a couple, couldn't have cared less. There was one particular woman on reception who was possibly the rudest receptionist we have ever encountered anywhere we have stayed in the world. The first night we had dinner on the roof terrace. The view was great but that was the highlight. As far as the meal was concerned there was no menu as we were 20 and were offered either Meat or Fish. It consisted of a few strands of grated cabbage, two limp beans and three slices of cucumber. That was followed by a soup which reminded me sadly of the bottom of my washing up bowl having washed up after dinner for 12. I won't bore you with the remainder of the meal because it makes me feel queasy to even think about it. All I can say is the following night we had the most delicious dinner at La Guarida. As far as the rooms were concerned...... ! We had a room on the corner which compared to the others was a palace. Two of us had these Junior Suites the rest were scattered over a couple of floors. The smell of damp everywhere was the first thing that hit you. The plumbing was non existent. We stayed there for 3 nights and we had to flush our loo using the plastic inside of the bin full of water. This happened in most of the rooms. None of us had a plug for the bath despite asking for one. However, quite frankly the bathroom and bath were so nasty I really wouldn't have wanted to attempt it. Don't look under the bed! Unfortunately I dropped the lid of a bottle and it became lost in a sea of 'debris' under the bed. This hotel is in the most perfect location and could be lovely and I'm not talking 5* deluxe. This is Cuba after all. Unfortunately I gather it is State run which probably explains a lot. Fortunately however the remainder of our visit to Cuba was wonderful. We just unfortunately got off to a dreadful start at the Ambos Mundos.

Heritage charm

You couldn't regret staying at the Ambos Mundos, despite the inevitable hiccups of being in a 100-year-old hotel that hasn't had a heap of maintenance over the years. It's right in the centre of Havana's car-free heritage centre with lovely walks and parks all around, plus bars, nightclubs and restuarants. The rooms are high-ceilinged, with shuttered windows and are oh-so European in influence and are air-conditioned. The plumbing's a bit dodgy though. Our shower would run for six seconds, go dry for six seconds, run for six seconds etc etc. Other members of our group were puzzled that they had no toilet paper supplied and had to ask for it. But wow, you're in Havana! It's such a treat. Take the ancient Otis elevator (complete with old-style attendant to open and close the concertina iron doors) up to the Terrace up on top for drinks or food. There's a good view up there of the city centre and out to sea. I had only breakfast there, which was lovely. Much fresh local fruit and juices, with no processed food in sight. And ask if you can see the 5th floor Hemingway Room. It's not open every day but is kept as a kind of shrine to writer Ernest Hemingway, who apparently stayed there a lot in the 1930s - favouring the topmost corner room. On days when it's available to view, you knock on the door and a guide lets you in to tell you Hemingway stories. There are some of his clothes there and his actual typewriter (or so they say, though who would know?). But it rates as one of the quaintest places I've ever stayed in.

This hotel is rated as a 4-stars hotel. It is not!The good: The staff is very nice and tries hard to be helpfulThe 6th-floor terrace, where the (free) breakfast is served has a great view of old Havana , very helpful staff, and good breakfast. A nice place to sip a mojito. The location is great! right at the center of old Havana, walking distance to most places. The bad: The hotel, except the lobby and 6th floor terrace, is rundown. Mainly the rooms. Leaky facets and toilets, insufficient hot water, poor lighting in rooms, etc. I had to switch a room because of a leaky ceiling in the bathroom. there was a safe in my room, but without a combination. All you need to open and lock it is your room entrance card (which any staff in the hotel can get. Also, wi-fi is available only in the lobby and the 6th floor terrace. In general: It was once, and could still be a glorious old-style hotel if some investment was put into maintaining it.

Roof bar worth a visit

We didn’t stay in the hotel, just paid a visit to the roof top bar on the 6th floor. You go up in a great old iron lift and the life operator is a chatty chap, even showing us photos of his family on the trip up.Bar staff are equally as great and service is good. Views of Havana Vieja are good for taking snaps but make sure you make use of the bar as the Daiquiris are fantastic, and I’m sure they weren’t any more than 4cuc which is great for such a premium location.

Recommended for making nice memories

Been there in October 2013, for total of four days, with friends. This is a hotel with a great location in the old town - old fashioned but only in this kind of hotel you can get a total experience and feel the spirit of Havana, especially knowing that Hemingway used to live in this hotel. Spending time there felt like being in a movie. Waking up and hearing salsa from the street in the early morning still puts a smile on my face.
