I read a lot of the reviews and it was pretty much as expected. Not horrible. Not great. PROs: Location. The beach is amazing and the free shuttle to Havana made this a great choice, the best of both worlds. The hotel itself is clean. Old, but in working order. Beds and linens were fine. Comfortable.Good place for the price and location.CONs: Service. Some reviews mention great service and hospitality and we did not experience this. Even after tipping upfront we didn't see a significant change in friendliness. The a-la-carte restaurants barely exist (3 times we were told it wasn't open and finally when it was the restaurant was full and we couldn't get in even with our reservation) so plan on buffet only. Food is exactly as described in other reviews, nothing exceptional but on par with Cuba. The place is so busy we often had to sit at a dirty table. Always had to ask for a paper napkin and soup spoon. I think they do their best but eating was not often a relaxing experience. I liked the fact that so many locals were around the pool and beach, but at times it was so busy you had to wait 20 minutes to get a sandwich at the pool.Water ran out completely one morning, sometimes there was no hot water.Overall, it was exactly as expected. We kept an open mind and were so happy with the location and the beach. Didn't expect the service to be so poor. Great area but keep your expectations low.
After having read the TripAdvisor reviews about Gran Caribe Club Atlantico/Hotel Atlantico (one and the same), I thought we were ready to spend a week at this venue in early February. The location of the hotel (right on the beach and within 25 min of the city), the free shuttle to Old Havana (a return taxi ride cost $65cdn) and the all-inclusive package (food and drinks) make it a convenient choice. However, the food selection was very very limited and truly unappetizing; at the bar, drinks were handed out sparingly by mostly unfriendly staff. Restaurants: Buffet (3 times a day), À la carte (was open only 2 days out of 7); Grill (by reservation at 10:00am, behind the pool bar); Snacks (throughout the day), hamburgers only w cheese slice, mustard, ketchup. Many guests complained about the washroom facilities, but ours was fine – not fancy, but fine. My husband figured out how to balance out the shower water temperature : first, turn on cold water fully; then, add hot water a little bit at a time waiting for it to come through; adjust very gradually as the hot water is scalding. Sometimes there was no water at all, that’s ok, it happens (not often). The A/C unit was noisy, but worked very efficiently. The cleaning staff was attentive and thorough.Do I feel this venue was a good choice? For what we wanted to do, yes. Would I go back to this hotel? No, but not sure another would be much better. The ladies at the reception desk were generally helpful. The taxi drivers are very pleasant, punctual and reliable. Havana is truly beautiful!
I have been to Cuba 4 times, twice to the Varadero area & twice to PLaya del Este area. So I do know that there are limitations to the conditions of their hotels & the star system rating them & the food supply. But this was truly bad!! I am not one to complain a lot---but I do have to warn people . We were booked for 1 week. On check in at almost 9pm-the first room given to us the door handle did not work & we were temporarily locked inside -kinda a pnaic moment especially since we do not speak any spanish but we got that resolved & changed rooms that same night . The buffet was bad...everyday the same food, they just kept recyling it...scary as the power does go out-so hot foods hot & cold foods cold--not really the case here & plus all the flies flying around the buffet -very unhealthy.Plus the cross contamination using the same utensils to cook raw fish raw chicken or raw beef....REALLY!!! The hotel is right on the beach- which is nice except due to a storm now you have to crawl Up & down a steep embankment --not good if u just had knee replacement surgery & are both 60 plus yrs old!!! All in all -we are glad the week is over....now I am sick with a stomach flu. Oh well live & learn!!! We did meet a lot of nice people staying at the resort & the nightly entertainment was good!! But Cuba now for sure is on my done list & will explore other tropical places like Mexico .
This was a huge disappointment. The food displayed dining area was constantly surrounded by flies. The rooms were basic, the pool was unclean. The entertainment by the pool was decent and the only saving grace was that the staff was very nice.
I read reviews before I booked this place and thought I would keep an open mind. But, wow!! Would never stay here again! The only saving grace is the proximity to the city itself. Food was horrible. My husband and I were both ill. Unsanitary food area. Flies all over the food and birds flying in and out of the kitchen!! We had no hot water on our first day. The bathroom faucets looked like they had never been cleaned. Cheaply made drinks and served in tiny cups like a dixie cup. The beach was supposed to be beautiful, however a storm had ripped through and the whole beach was basically gone! It was like a 4 or 5 foot drop from the beach that was left behind to get to the water. You would think they would try to grade it and make it easier to get to the water, but no! I could go on and on. If you are smart, do not stay here!!
