We were a family of four with 2 kids (13 years and 9 years old) that stayed at Melia Cohiba in August 2017 and enjoyed it tremendously. It's more of a business hotel than a family resort - comparable to any nice business hotel in the US or Canada. The hotel is very clean, modern with contemporary furnishings. Staff was very professional, friendly and courteous. Location: extremely convenient and centrally located in the modern district of Havana, right across the road from the Malecon (where you can stroll in the evening / late night). Plenty of nice restaurants close by and minutes from Old Havana etc. Rooms - decent sized rooms, clean and contemporary. We were actually upgraded to a suite with a master bedroom and a living room with 2 bathrooms. Kids loved the space. Free Wi-fi available although it kept getting disconnected frequently and we had to log-in using the free scratch cards every time to reconnect. Bathrooms were clean, large and modern. Beds were OK. We ate at the La Piazza and Plaza Habana restaurant and frequented the Aqua's bar, Gran Anejo bar and Expresso Habana Bar in the hotel. Breakfast was at the Plaza Habana restaurant in the morning. Food, drinks and the service overall in all the restaurants and bars in the hotel were top notch. Highly recommend this hotel in Havana. If you are looking for a family style resort in Havana with a large pool, expansive property and grounds etc. then I would recommend Melia Habana in the quite, upscale Miramar residential / embassy district - though its a little distance from central Havana with not much to do or good restaurants within walking distance around the hotel.TIPS for CUBA: 1. Highly recommend getting the services of a local guide to show you around Havana. We enlisted the services of Randy Montero from CUBA AMONG CUBANS. A quick google search should help you find his website and connect. He arranged the classic cars for us (1952 Buick and 1956 Chevy) and took us around Havana, a day trip to wonderful Vinales, Varadero, local paladars, airport transfers etc. Very professional, english speaking with great knowledge of Havana and Cuba and reasonable prices. 2. Currency exchange rates were the same between the airport and the city. Although people were still happy to take USD instead of CUC. 3. If you go to a tobacco farm - buy cigars from there. Same quality as Cohiba cigars - just not labeled or branded Cohiba and fraction of the price for what you may pay at a state run store in the city or airport. Besides - the farmers will take out the nicotine vein from the tobacco leaf when rolling the cigars for you. 4. Wi-Fi is not easy to get across Cuba. Best bet is your hotel - and it may not always be free. Mobile connectivity is typically poor all over Cuba. 5. The Tropicana show in Havana was not all that great and did not live upto its hype. Performers looked forced and worn-out, the acts were old, costumes tired, food less than spectacular. 6. There is no price difference in Cigars and Alcohol at the Airport duty free shop and the stores in the hotel or elsewhere in the city. Besides the Airport Duty Free only accepts Cash and NO credit cards.7. Taxi Fares approximately: - Airport to central Havana - approx 30 CUC one way in a classic a/c car. - Havana to Vinales day trip - between 180 - 220 CUC roundtrip in a classic a/c car and based on what activities are included in the trip (boat tour in the Indio caves - $5/pp; horse riding $5/pp etc.)- Havana to Varadero - between 80 - 100 CUC one way in a classic a/c car. - Havana City Tour - between 80 - 120 CUC in a classic a/c car. 8. Real Milk or whole milk is hard to get. Everyone, everywhere seems to serve powdered milk.
We went as a group from Orange for incentive trip and seminar to Havana. We all stayed at Melia Cohiba as 100+ group. The location of the hotel is great where yiu can easily pickup a colourful vintage car taxi to city center in like 10 minutes and explore the nice city. The hotel rooms are very spacious, i stayed at room 1701 with a nice ocean view and enjoyed watching the waves crash the Malecon. The Malecon is only 1 minute walk where you can spend quality time any time in the day/ night. The pool is nice also and has a bar. We had parties at Havana cafe right at the hotel corner with beautiful shows in a very nice decorated place.staff speak very good English and are helpful and welcoming. Breakfast is delicious too with various options. All in all good choice for this trip
This was a really nice surprise for the end our trip. The food, accommodations and service were wonderful and had some nice shops to purchase things to bring back home. The rooms were spacious and the bathrooms very clean and fresh. Definitely would recommend staying at this hotel.
The hotel is old and needs updating but most places in Cuba are like this. The floor in our room was dirty. Overall I felt the room was not clean. As Americans it is not safe to drink the water but we were charged for bottled water. The breakfast buffet was good. The security was good and everyone was helpful.
Before traveling I thoroughly read every review here and on other sites. I’d like to say.. please ignore all and listen to me. I just spent the most incredible week there. It’s frustrating to see that so many snobby people can’t travel without having to criticize every little thing. They upgraded us to the level floor for FREE! The restaurants inside were amazing. Especially la piazza. And the aqua. The cigar bar staff was so sweet and knowledgeable. I never felt safer or more well attended. The free breakfast buffet.... huge and delicious. Omelette station. Fresh juices. Fruit. Breads and pastries. The staff was beyond words. They all welcomed and greeted my son every time they saw us. When my son fell asleep on our way back from a trip.. DAVID helped carry him back to our room. Put him in bed for us and refused to take a tip. That’s service! My only issue was the inattentiveness and slowness at the pool. It took forever and some stalking to get service. But on the flip side there was a lifeguard there that was so helpful. Made sure our umbrellas were up or closed when we needed. When my son threw up he was quick to come and help and ask if he was ok. Cabs of all kinda are easy accessed outside. Ask for Alberto laballe! He became our driver for the week. Took us everywhere even 2 hrs away. And was so helpful with my son as well as knowledgeable with all questions we asked. We walked the malecon and near by restaurants alone. I never felt fear or unsafe. You can purchase souvenirs. Cigars and liquor at the hotel. Makes it convenient. TIP. IF YOUR BREAKFAST IS INCLUDED IN YOUR STAY.. you can get it delivered to your room for a small fee. Worth the convenience when you’re feeling lazy. Just please go with an open mind. It’s not fast paced like a lot of cities. People are super friendly and want to speak with you. Many wanted to hug and kiss my son which he wasn’t used to and took some adjusting lol. It’s not “our version” of a 5 Star. But just take it for what it is. And enjoy! I cannot wait to go again. And would most definitely stay at Melia cohiba again. The location is the center of many attractions. Plaza de revolución. Bodeguita del medio. Fusterlandia. Callejón de Hámel. John Lennon park.
