stayed 3 nights at this hotel before travelling to Varadero. The room was very good the pool area lovely, the buffet breakfast good as were the pizza's in the pool bar for a late lunch. the concierge booked us a lovely meal on a roof terrace 2 blocks from the hotel for one evening (a place we would have never found by ourselves). Lots of taxis and old American cars for hire also bus stops for the hop on bus just outside the hotel. A nice hotel to stay in

Lovely hotel in a wonderful city

Arrived home a few days ago after a very special 3 nights in Havana and 11 nights in Varadero (see separate review of Sol palmeras). The hotel was lovely although quite a way from the centre (about an hours walk) Lovely pool area and especially liked the outside restaurant by the pool. Nice food and lovely cocktails. Was given a suite for our anniversary and it was fantastic. They also gave us a bottle of champagne and a cake. Lovely gesture. As for havana, what an amazing place. We were quite emotional leaving, it definitely left an impact on us. We managed to do and see everything we had researched and more. Booked a car tour with 'old car tours' whilst we were back home and it went without a hitch. It was fantastic. Thank you Melia Cohiba for making our holiday a very memorable experience and one that we will never forget. Hope to see you again one day

Nice hotel but not a 5 star by USA standards

We stayed here 3 nights when we first arrived in Cuba and our last night (with a trip to Varadero in between.)The main reason for picking this hotel is that it was within walking distance of my husband's only remaining family in Cuba.It is a beautiful hotel, has striking flower arrangements in the lobby, and very helpful personnel. Our room rate came with the buffet breakfast--which was good but not great. There was live music every morning with different ensembles. Some days we were seated, others we just found an empty table. Biggest complaint--usually a long line for the made to order eggs and the scrambled eggs were runny or one day refrigerator cold. Nice selection of tropical fruit and juices. Lots of different breads and pastries but weren't very tasty--which was surprising as the Cuban bakeries by us the pastries and bread are outstanding! We found the food at other locations in the hotel to be okay but not great. At least the prices were 5 Star USA prices. The mojitos in the bar were 5.50 (most other places 3.50) but they were strong. A hamburger around 10.00.The pool area is beautiful--make sure to check it out.One day we were out of our room from 10 AM to 6 PM with the door sign "Please clean my room" out. When we returned, it had not been cleaned. The maids were back working at 7 PM, but we didn't want to leave the room while the bed was made etc. The next morning at breakfast I was asked to fill out a guest services card and I noted this in my comments. When we returned to the hotel, there was a note of apology from the maid and an email from the hotel. We went to see the Buena Vista Social Club at the Havana Café which is part of the hotel. It was a nice show, a Wednesday night so not very full, and quite a bargain. For $30 (we paid at the service desk in the hotel lobby), we received one alcoholic beverage (mojito), one nonalcoholic beverage, and an appetizer plate for each of us that was enough for four people. We did have free wifi--but you get a "card" from the front desk to use to log in with a very long numeric log on and separate password. Worked well in room 802; not too well in room 625.I do think $400 a night was a bit pricey but we booked through Cuban Travel Services--I think we could have booked direct and saved quite a bit of money. The hotel has a free shuttle into Old Havana. You are suppose to get a pass from the concierge to show to the driver--but some check it others do not. It doesn't run too frequently so be sure to check the schedule. It drops you off by the Artesian's Plaza and will also pick you up there. BUT one parked in the parking lot and picked you up there--the other in front of the building. Neither driver had a Melia Cohiba sign out--unlike the Melia Havana shuttle. This hotel worked well for us and would even stay there again (but may do more investigation in booking directly with the hotel).

Good for Cuba but widely overpriced

As many reviews have noted, this is a perfectly adequate hotel and you will have a good time if you stay here. However, it is not 5-star as most people would understand it except for the prices. It is about the same level as a 3-star European hotel. The place is generally just a bit tired (not uncommon at all in Cuba) in decor and probably needs re-wiring because my plug adapter exploded when I put it in the wall. The poolside bar food is quite poor (normal for Cuba), the buffet was closed but the Italian restaurant they have was the best meal we had in Cuba. There is a small shopping centre opposite where drinks (rum) are eye-openingly cheap. We also stayed in a Casa particular for some of our stay and were glad to get back to the hotel. The main problem we had was the very lazy concierge service. Our airline was supposed to organise our transport back to the airport via Cubanacan (a TERRIBLE tour company). The hotel rang to confirm the arrangements but on the day it never arrived and the concierge made barely the minimal effort to help.Overall it's fine and just remember its Cuba where is is quicker to list what IS available than what isn'.

Close to perfect!

I stayed at the Meliá Cohiba for 4 nights, in "The Level" rooms (located on the last 4 floors of the hotel) and had an a-ma-zing stay. The room was absolutely beautiful, with a view over the sea and the city. The bed was so big that, not kidding, 4 people could have slept in it. The bathroom amenities were of great quality! Robes and slippers provided. Slept incredibly well! Wi-Fi in the hotel and rooms (which is not to be neglected in Cuba where internet is quite difficult to access still). The staff were all really friendly and always ready to help! Breakfast on the 20th floor overlooking the sea, phenomenal! I had my flight late at night, and was able to keep the room until then for no extra charge. Very nice swimming pool! I was able to eat at the lobby bar, the Aqua restaurant and the Plaza Habana restaurant, and was very happy with the food! The hotel also has a gym, spa, boutiques, forex counter, business center, etc. which was very helpful! The only downside is that there were bugs in my room, which were quite invasive. So just suggesting the hotel has a look into this as I might not be the only room with this issue! A part from the bug issue, I was very very happy with my stay!
