Fine hotel in Havana

I give this a very good rating based on what I expect a major hotel to be like in Havana. We were on the 7th floor with a view of the ocean and Malecon. The wind was blowing hard and it created a whistling noise across our window, which at times was a bit annoying. However not intolerable. Overall the hotel accommodates well to the tourist/business traveler. I was with Marathon Tours for the Havana Marathon with my son & husband- and about 100 other runners. Nicely appointed gift shop, jewelry shop and cigar/rum store in hotel. Nice large lobby, concierge service, easy to exchange dollars for CUC. Do it there and life will be easy. Full Buffet breakfast provided every day. There was more food to choose from than most Cubans probably see all year. Coffee not the best however. Our room was large with two queen beds, large bath with shower. No problems with hot water or water pressure. Really the only thing lacking is a great internet connection. Connecting to WiFi in room was slow and tedious. I preferred not bother and take a break from connectivity. Bed linens were adequate but need an update. The TV had CNN and BBC international if you really need to keep up with the world. Mini bar in room and single serve pod-style coffee pot- which there is a charge for. Could of at least provided coffee in room as part of room fee. Cabs, both yellow and old-car, available outside hotel. 10CUC to center old town Havana in cab. Nice hotel, but not with-in waling distance to Old Havana. There are a few restaurants/bars across the street that offer pizza, burgers, cuban sandwiches etc. Worth the short walk.

This hotel is top of the line for Havana, although there were issues with the toilets flushing properly. Other than the toilets, the rooms are very nice; food is excellent; service is as good as expected in a big city, and I recommend the Coffee Bar near the pool if you like a good quality expresso. Several restaurants in the hotel, all serve very good food. Shops in the hotel are reasonable. All the hotel personnel were polite and warm. I would go back to Melia Cohiba.

Excellent hotel in Havana

We stayed here for 4 nights in a Master Suite on the 19th floor (the building has 21 floors). The top four floors are called "The Level" --a concierge level that includes a special check in on the 20F, breakfast in the lounge, afternoon hors d'oeuvres. We didn't know what to expect in terms of accommodations but we were pleasantly surprised. Our suite was massive with a sweeping view of the Malecon and the Ocean from one side of the room and the city from the other. The room had modern furniture, firm beds, a jacuzzi and 2 bathrooms. There was a safe, ironing board and mini bar. We had a welcome gift of champagne, Cuban rum, coffee grounds and fruit. Also, included was a 45min massage for each of us in the room (that you needed to reserve through the concierge). Electrical outlets supported US 110v although there were a few 220v European outlets as well.Only minor issues were the internet (which was included with our rate) was that you had to constantly log in after 5-10 minutes of non use and at times was hard to log on at all but once logged on --worked well. On one morning, the water was turned off but we didn't have problems any of the other 3 days. The concierge was extremely helpful prior to our arrival and arranged our airport transfer (which was included in our Suite rate--which although not cheap, was quite reasonable given all the amenities of the above. US credit cards do not work here. It you can prepay using their affiliated travel agency in euros to avoid having to bring so much cash. I had to communicate mostly in Spanish with the Concierge via email with the help of Google translate but we got all of emails responded to on the same day. There is a bank (cadeca) on the ground floor that offered a reasonable exchange rate (a 3% commission over official rates except for US dollars which have a Government mandated 13% rate). Just bring Euros or Canadian dollars. There is a large taxi stand across the street. A taxi to old town cost $10 (1CUC = $ 1 USD) although there is a free shuttle to the old town several times per day (about 10-15 minutes away depending on traffic). You can also rent a driver across the street with a classic 50s car for around $25-30 for an hour tour of Havana. There are shops on the ground floor that offer reasonable prices and a sundries shop as well. The pool is outdoors and a large size. There is a great restaurant across the street from the lobby call Havana Mia 7 (or HM 7) which served outstanding white linen dining at very reasonable prices.Although there is a travel agency in the lobby--we opted for a travel agency on Tripadvisor that Overall, this is an excellent hotel in Havana and comparable to a US/European chain and recommend it to anyone. It's not inexpensive but there aren't a large selection of high end Havana's hotels and stay on "The Level" if your budget allows.

Little bit of luxury in havana

Same standard as you would expect for a 5 star hotel in Europe. Air con a bit too cold in the rooms. Staff friendly, free wifi but slow, although good for Cuba.A bit further from old Havana but taxi isn't expensive.

Don't be ridiculous!

Before we arrived in Cuba, Our tour organizer had warned us not to expect the quality of hotel we may have been used to in the US or Europe."Four stars in Cuba doesn't mean the same as four stars in Europe". But it was absolutely FINE! It was a lovely hotel. And, if after looking at the poverty of the surrounding neighborhood, you have the pomposity to say otherwise, then I say, stop being a snob!! It was a very very nice hotel. Literally, my only comment would be that the bedspreads were a tiny bit out of style. (I secretly judge hotels by their bedspreads). The lobby is large and glamorous with options for dining or beveraging or just relaxing and enjoying the ocean view. There is free wifi in the lobby, but do not count on it. It's sporadic at best. The next level up also has plenty of dining as well as the very nice (but unheated) pool. There are a few shops on the ground level. I was pleasantly surprised by how REALLY inexpensive snacks and things like rum were in the sundries shop. Most hotels will use a shop like that to gouge you.The rooms are large and fully equipped with everything you'll need. A free safe, robes, iron ironing board, television that picks up American stations, mini bar, coffee (not free), sufficient outlets, extra seating, great views (at least we had a great view of the ocean and the pool), a large modern bathroom with a shower, a magnifying mirror, toiletries, a bidet, a hair dryer, and an abundance of towels. I've been to many many fancy hotels that do not bother to provide more than one towel per person, so this hotel ranks highly in my opinion. You can exchange money at the hotel for 13% (just like the airport). You can exchange it back to US money for no fee. Currency is 1 to 1 for American Dollars.Across the street from the hotel is a shopping center with a grocery store, and an appliance store if you suddenly find that you need a stove or refrigerator. And also, right across the street is an AMAZINGLY AMAZING restaurant. It was so good, we went there twice. I will write a separate review about that. There are plenty of taxis available from the hotel. I suspect they even have rental cars available. It's about 15CUC from the hotel to Old Havana in a taxi. But you can probably get a better bargain than that if you try.I think there are fancier hotels or hotels closer to Old Havana, but I'd be perfectly happy to stay in this one again.
