Had an amazing time in Havana, with home base at the Memories Miramar. The dated hotel has been updated, but still shows its age - which if fine! I expected what I got.The lobby bar had live entertainment every night which was always fun to return to at the end of a long day.The pool is huge but was mainly empty most of the time. I imagine tourists come there to sleep and not swim. It was conveniently located to all of our activities. It's in a secured area but has easy access to taxis.
Stayed in a few different rooms, all a good size (the larger on the corners with a lounge area as well), but certainly on the lower floors the rooms were very tired, torn carpets, stained grouting in the bathroom.A very large buffet breakfast, and if you need to leave early you can inform reception and have a small breakfast at the bar in the lobby. Many airlines use this hotel for their staff, and many tour groups go through here as well.It doesn't have the culture and decor of the hotels in Centro Havana, but the pool is decent and it is just a short cab ride away.
I stayed on the 5th floor of the hotel. This was a lot better than I expected it to be. It seems as the hotel was built in the 80s and they have attempted to update the rooms. We had 2 beds, a jacuzzi, a bidet and the shower was a "rainfall" type. We had a nice view of the pool. A stocked mini fridge and a full size Havana Club 3Anos for sale in the room. The breakfast was decent. And the bar was nice. However, you could tell that they haven't replaced the carpet in the hallways since the place was built, there were stains everywhere. I never got in the pool, but it is HUGE and there were a lot of people enjoying it. It was about a 25-30CUC cab ride from the Airport. The bad point is that it isn't really near anything. You can't walk anywhere. The Aquarium is defunct.
Hotel Memories Miramar is a large establishment formerly known as the Occidental Miramar. My large room was maintained quite clean. Lighting provided by wall and ceiling light fixtures and also a tablelamp allowed for easy reading and working after sundown. There are two swimming pools, one quite large with poolside bar. The included buffet breakfast is in a very large dining hall. The buffet includes not only a typical breakfast items (fresh fruit, cereal, eggs, sausage, bread, etc.), but also a large variety of these items as well as a few local breakfast dishes. Omelets are made to order. The Hotel Memories seems to cater to large tour groups. Despite the tour bus crowds, the restaurant staff never appeared overwhelmed by the numbers of guests being served. Every evening of my four-night visit enjoyable music was played in the lobby. On three evenings young dancers performed a very entertaining floor show to popular Cuban music. On the fourth evening the performance was of lively flamenco music and dance. The Memories is located in a rather upscale quiet residential district devoid of sites of tourist interest within walking distance. There is, however, a supermarket that can be reached on foot in 6-8 minutes. Given the opportunity, I would return to this hotel despite the following, which I assume is an unusual situation. On arriving I noticed evidence of termite infestation in the door frame of my room. I informed management so that the problem could be taken care of. On the following two days I found a termite between the bed sheets. Since the bed was a good 15 feet from the door, I imagine that the infestation was probably not limited to the doorframe. Despite this issue, I would happily return to the Memories should I come back to Havana.
I had great time in this hotel, I was there from 22th to 28th of April for a business trip. I did not have too much time to enjoy the hotel, but in the free time I had the opportunity to experience it. Breakfast is great and delicious! and I recommend that you come close to "Urbanet" the guy that is preparing the eggs :) , beside that he prepare really good eggs, he is really positive and always smiling... The whole people and food at the restaurant was friendly and cordial. just talk with the staff, they will give you the best advice where to go and what visit in Cuba. The location is little far away from the Old City, but if you walk 1 block to the 3rd street, you can catch the HOP ON HOP OFF bus, that will take you to the old city for 10 CUC (whole day) and will leave you in the same place at the return. There are always taxis outside, and my best recommendation is "negotiate the price".Rum and installation are little old and it is not big deal if you are not a picky person :)
