Tryp Habana Libre

Our OpinionA famous hotel located right in the middle of the local scene in Vedado, the†rooms are nice and updated and it has an open air disco on the top of the hotel.††
I think Habana Libre is a good hotel yet it has a lot of details, unafortunely I don't have pictures but here we go, the rooms are very big, and I still don't get Cuba's policy about just 2 persons per room, a family of 4 can easily fit. the bathrooms are disgusting, the tubs are peeling and so the toilets as well, dressing table is very nice and big, 3 mirrors not including the 2 of the closet. breakfast is great, delicious, but it is always the same, menu does not change. for personal experience, not that good, the first day of my family's stay, my brother and my dad got stuck on the elevator for 2 hours, less than 1 without any light, and there was no one to let us know it, my mom and I thought the worst at that moment until they got out and called us from reception, tip: since you are not going to have neither service or wifi, bring some walkie talkies or something like that for you to avoid this situations, I mean the ones where you think the worst is happening.
Booked as part of a package so cannot comment on the price but if I had paid a lot of money I would be fuming!! The good bits.. lobby is lovely. Position very handy for seafront and lot of restaurants. Pool area was okay too. And the view from floor 15 was fantastic. But beyond that. The room was extremely tired. Peeling paint. Cracked tiles. Damp patches. Sliding doors would not open - no handle on the door. Did I mention cockroaches. Yep. Several. You can see what it would have been like in its heyday with lovely big rooms. But it's uncared for. Which is forgiven - as many have said - this is Cuba.... but that doesn't excuse rude staff. Dirty towels. Dirty crockery and cutlery in the restaurant. Grubby sunloungers. Very rude and scary lift attendants who made my daughter walk up 2 stories. (Excuse me but I can press my own bloody lift button!!!) and charging a fortune for wifi which will then not connect. This place needs a complete refurbishment and a lesson in customer service. Because believe me this level of service is not Cuba...
This hotel is like so much else in Cuba a piece of its history. It did feel a bit run down, the lifts were sometimes extremely slow, there was a funny smell in our room (on the 14th floor) and the window in our room was so foggy that the lovely view was almost fully lost on us. BUT the good things outnumbered the things that might have been better. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The pool area is really nice, the breakfast buffet was really good, the restaurants we tried were from excellent to average, A few tips:Try the tapas at the lobby bar - best bites in town.Check out the mural on the second floor.Check out the musical acts that perform at the hotel. The "diner" on the first floor is the only restaurant open 24 hours in Havana, good to know if you have to check out in the middle of the night.Go to the top floor and take in the scenery - also the restaurant there is very good (and the air condition is on full blast so dress accordingly). You can buy internet tokens and access it in the huge lobby - but remember that you are in Cuba and what could be more interesting than that on the net?In Cube the next half an hour is often 45 minutes - go with the flow.
This huge hotel is located in a area with plenty of bars and restaurants in the area. The rooms have excellent views over the town and sea with large windows. There might be some slight impovements on the wifi but overall a good place te stay.
Like most of Havana the Tryp is older, full of character and not quite in step with expectations of the international traveler. At one time this must have been a luxury hotel. While not derelict it has not been kept up to those standards. Our room, on the 17th floor, was spacious and had views of the Malecón with Old Town in the distance -- very pretty. Good water pressure and hot water. The room maid did a nice job and the room (whole hotel) was very clean. The front desk could use some customer relations training. The breakfast buffet was okay with a good variety of items available. We ate an evening meal in the lobby restaurant: soup and a Cuban sandwich neither of which had flavour or merited any interest. Take a pass on this restaurant. We enjoyed the lobby bar where the waitstaff were more professional and the pours generous. This was a solid $80-a-night hotel anywhere else in the world but, of course, things cost a lot in Havana, Cuba. If we had it to do again we would stay at a hotel in Old Town.
