Our OpinionA famous hotel located right in the middle of the local scene in Vedado, the†rooms are nice and updated and it has an open air disco on the top of the hotel.††
Arrived from Varadero airport on a very wet night. Tired from our 10 hour flight and 2 hour transfer and after reading previous reviews were fearing the worse - not the case.Check in was very quick and easy. We had room 2122 which was huge and had an amazing view over the city. The room was very very clean even if some of the wood work at the bottom of the doors was shabby. Plenty of towels and hot water. As we were tired and the weather was on the wet side, we decided to eat in the hotel. We went for the buffet which we thought was dear but we probably didn't do it justice as bodyclock was all over the place. Breakfast had an amazing choice - french toast was good. Had coffee machines so you could help yourself and a toasting machine. Wasn't expecting all this in Havana. The lounge downstairs offered a good choice of coffees, cocktails and drinks.Second night it was raining again so we ate in the restaurant to the right of the lift was was good and much more reasonable than the buffet. We never once had a long wait for a lift - some of them have a operater and can only assume that is because sometimes they go wrong. All the staff we came across from the cleaners, restaurant staff, front desk were good and approachable.Maybe we were lucky - another couple we spoke to changed their room as the one they had smelt like someone had smoked in it. Also after reading all the reviews I was dreading our visit but was plesantly surprised - everyone has different opinions and you just have to form your own. Just remind yourself where you are - this is Havana not London/NYC.
Difficult where to begin. In a nutshell, this hotel is the definition of being worn out/tired. No hotel has been so neglected. Of course this has a lot to do with the tourist industry and state control in Cuba, but this is a hotel to see for yourself. Mind you, not to stay though.I had chosen this hotel in view of its history and 15 years after my first stay there, it was mesmerising to see nothing had been added. The ceilings come off, the woodwork has mould, the uncomfortable bed, the door of the room barely locks, waiting 10 minutes for an elevator; the hotel is stuck in time somewhere unspecified.Yes, the staff does its best (the concierge is particularly worthy of mention as she helps with everything) and yes the lobby is gorgeous but that is where it ends. The huge breakfast buffet is gorgeous until you taste anything. Just go for the omelette as nothing else is delicious at all.The taxis in front of the hotel are not worthy of looking at or negotiating, go elsewhere.
While your part of the trip was acceptable as per the reservations, the quality of my room was sub-standard. My room was on an outdated floor with broken furniture! There were also bugs in the room. I had to request a change of rooms twice during my stay to move up to an acceptable room. My associate who traveled with me received a MUCH better new room at the hotel with MUCH better accommodations! And he paid less than I did for the room. He went through Trip Advisor. I was very unsatisfied with my original room!
We stayed at the Habana Libre for three nights as part of a split centre two week trip to Cuba.Good points:1. Clean rooms2. Awesome views across the city3. Superb lobby/foyer area with great entertainment in the evenings, nice bar and awesome mojitos (best we had anywhere in Havana)4. Friendly staff5. Breakfast was plentiful6. History of buildingBad points:1. Rooms are very tired, we were on the 19th floor and our room had doors missing from cupboards and various other wear and year. Needs some tender loving care (TLC)2. Pool area was not that nice... For example there were empty drink glasses/packaging and the staff just seemed to ignore it (including one guy (staff) who walked around some empty cans on the floor instead of picking them up)3. Lifts were slow and busy (although the two lift ladies who manned some of them were lovely)4. Location was not great, yep it's near the Malecon... But in hindsight we should have chosen a hotel nearer the old town. All in all it was fine for 3 nights, but I wouldn't want to do anymore than that.
Stayed at the Habana Libre on the way back from visiting family. Pool area was great, buffet very good. Service was ok. Room was horrible, phone service over priced. Wifi never worked. Much better options out there. Stay away if you can.
