Our Opinion
A famous hotel located right in the middle of the local scene in Vedado, the rooms are nice and updated and it has an open air disco on the top of the hotel.
Overview
A fun, hip hotel right in the heart of Havana. Incredible selection of entertainment, including a nightclub on the top floor with a retractable ceiling that allows you to take in a show under the stars.

Location: Downtown district of Vedado. 40 min from Havana airport.

Cigar shop

I didn't stay here, but heard they had the best cigar shop in the area. All genuine and best prices I could find on the island. I looked everywhere and this place has the best deals. The selection was pretty good as well.

No frills, bang for your buck

Nice and cheap hotel right amidst the hustle and bustle of Havana. We were a group of 4 who were bundled together in one very spacious room. The buffet breakfast was great and plenty of oprions were available. The lift was quite scary at time as the building was very tall and the lift go down pretty fast and would "yoyo" to a stop, so it would dip past the ground floor and come up again. I dont know if it was the effect of cuban cigars or jet lag but the building seemed to suddenly vibrate or move every now and then. Funny thing is I didn't mention this sensation to my friends until we had vacated the hotel but they all had experienced the same thing. This feeling had gone as soon as we left the Hotel which makes me feel it must be something to do with the building rather than the jet-lag or cigars! Overall, we still had a good experience at this hotel, and Havana in general.

Excellent Stay

We traveled to Havana with a group of 25. The lobby area is very nice as is the mezzanine. Check in was professional and prompt, our luggage was delivered quickly to our room on the 17th floor. The room had. Great view over the city and everything worked well. The hotel was full so there was pressure on the elevators, but one bank of 3 is new. Restaurants and bars on property were very good. Tipping certainly improved service.

Good Choice in Havana

Habana Libre is the 1950's era Hilton that was an early confiscation by the revolutionary government so obviously isn't the most modern facility in the world, but it is clean & comfortable and boasts unusually large rooms and equally expansive public spaces. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Our 17th floor room appeared to have been recently renovated with new tile all around and new bath fixtures - with the exception of the tub, which had been redone with epoxy paint that had a few chips and showed some discoloration. Strictly a cosmetic issue, it was certainly clean, as was the entire facility. A wall-mounted hairdryer flanked the sink. There were plenty of towels provided as well as lotions, shampoo & conditioner. Never had a problem with hot water. Air conditioning worked but the room temperature control was, as far as I could tell, non-functional and temps varied during the day, rising during the afternoons when the sun hit our side of the building. As others have noted, upper floors have great city views.Beds were a little firm for my taste but acceptably comfortable. Room furniture was in good condition but a little sparse, in particular except for using the floor there was really no good place to put bags where they could be accessed, best we could do was to use the credenza top where the bag stayed sandwiched between the TV and a lamp. There were several open shelves in the closet but no dresser and no credenza drawer space. A fridge took up the credenza's left pedestal and a safe (non functional) occupied the right. A flat-screen TV boasted a good number of channels, including several nice music channels and some English offerings such as the inevitable CNN. There were several 110 volt US outlets but only one 220 Euro outlet, and that one by the bathroom sink. There is a decent pool (didn't try it) and a good assortment of eating & drinking facilities, also a locally popular nightclub on the top floor. Included breakfast was served via a large buffet on the 2nd floor/upper lobby, and offered cooked to order eggs & omelets plus a variety of meats, cheese, fruit & breads, . There is a decent restaurant with good food & drink at reasonable prices, plus an informal cafe that we didn't sample. The digitally addicted may suffer some angst over internet access, which is available at $5/hr via cards purchased in the lobby. Access is possible only in the main lobby and is both quirky, often requiring multiple tries to get logged in, and slow when you do get connected. One minor annoyance was the one every other reviewer mentions, the elevators. There are two banks of three but we are talking three original equipment from the 1950s with the other three not much newer, and basic elevator speeds have improved dramatically since then. It also seems their vintage control electronics may have the electrical equivalent of dementia, occasionally self-canceling floor calls and with us once reversing travel for no obvious reason during mid-journey. To help out, operators are stationed in 1 or 2 cars during various periods to ride herd on the automatics, but rush periods can back up badly. Keep a good attitude, allow extra time during check in/out periods and go with the flow.Bottom line, this isn't your five-star first world facility but we found it totally acceptable and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as a comfortable base for exploring wonderful Havana.

Oasis in the midst of Habana

Everything in context....After shockingly bad treatment trying to get internet access at several hotels, Hotel Libre was a tall drink of cool water in a desert. Plus, the Rat Pack cool decor throwback added to the ambiance. Pictures of Jane Fonda and Ted Turner, Matt Dillon from the 80's, various political figures from abroad....So, to put a squish on the middleman mark-up of ENESCA government phone cards selling for $2 CUC and you being charged $10 CUC, the hotel issues you password directly. Quite frankly I don't mind not being arbitrarily dismissed by whomever is working the front desk. So the price is high for internet access, but it is HASSLE FREE. Different than other hotels where: two workers pocketed the difference, one refused to sell me the card, one hotel where I was staying upcharged me because I had not yet checked in. Yeah you Melia Habana on a strip mall of wasteland (don't stay there, people). Food was decent but that was pure bonus; being treated like a human, having internet access, and a good bathroom (not underrated!) made this the TOP place in Havana to go for internet. The cat is out of the bag and the comfortable sofas and chairs of the mezzanine of the Hotel Libre deserve to be the place.
