Our OpinionA famous hotel located right in the middle of the local scene in Vedado, the†rooms are nice and updated and it has an open air disco on the top of the hotel.††
Beautiful Hotel decorated like Mad Men times, the location is just perfect to enjoy Vedado, the Malecon and just 10 minutes away from Habana Vieja,Their service is really good, the mojitos are great and they have a 24/7 cafeteria with some pretty good milkshakes. The breakfast is included and is a really diverse buffet,The rooms are big, clean and with a great view, their exchange rate is pretty fair and the most important thing is that they are in the heart of the nightlife. The hotel exceed my expectations.
The service and cocktails that were prepared from one of the waiters Oamsy, was a must. His cocktails made my friend and I come back every night. The views also made the cocktails a whole lot sweeter.
When you arrive to this emblematic hotel, it can be a little overwhelming because it is huge and there are so many people. We went and checked in after a little wait at reception and decided to change money, which was a bad idea. Despite being very easy to do so the reception staff don't mind taking their cut and the rate that you are given is not the actual exchange rate but well, it was easy and so we didn't mind too much but this is something you have to remember in Cuba, some people will try to take advantage of tourists, you just wouldn't expect it from a 4 star international hotel. Havana is quite a big city and so the first thing we wanted to do was find out where we were on a city map and try to see how we could get around. When we asked for a map at the hotel reception, (expecting a typical paper map free from hotels) the reception staff laughed and said no. This is the type of service you can expect from this hotel. Apart from that though the hotel is very well located close to the Malecon and it is easy to get around from there. The breakfast service was excellent and there was a lot of variety to choose from. The pool is also great especially after a long day sight seeing but it is a real shame that it closes at 6.30pm as it would be lovely to use it in the evening. The room we had had a great view of the Malecon although it is true that the rooms are very dated. with it being Cuba and knowing the situation in Cuba this is something that you expect, but as this is a 4 star hotel you would expect it to be clean, and it wasn't particulary clean in the bathroom (hairs on floor etc). Also don't get out the lift at floor two, there was a huge hole in the ceiling and some leaking! Our advice would be if you can, stay in Havana Vieja in a hotel with a pool (this is a must) but if not then don't stay any further out in Vedado than this hotel and this area, as there are other Melia hotels etc further up the coast but to visit the Malecon and Havana Vieja this would mean taxis constantly and they are not cheap in Cuba, well not for Guiris!
I think Habana Libre is a good hotel yet it has a lot of details, unafortunely I don't have pictures but here we go, the rooms are very big, and I still don't get Cuba's policy about just 2 persons per room, a family of 4 can easily fit. the bathrooms are disgusting, the tubs are peeling and so the toilets as well, dressing table is very nice and big, 3 mirrors not including the 2 of the closet. breakfast is great, delicious, but it is always the same, menu does not change. for personal experience, not that good, the first day of my family's stay, my brother and my dad got stuck on the elevator for 2 hours, less than 1 without any light, and there was no one to let us know it, my mom and I thought the worst at that moment until they got out and called us from reception, tip: since you are not going to have neither service or wifi, bring some walkie talkies or something like that for you to avoid this situations, I mean the ones where you think the worst is happening.
Booked as part of a package so cannot comment on the price but if I had paid a lot of money I would be fuming!! The good bits.. lobby is lovely. Position very handy for seafront and lot of restaurants. Pool area was okay too. And the view from floor 15 was fantastic. But beyond that. The room was extremely tired. Peeling paint. Cracked tiles. Damp patches. Sliding doors would not open - no handle on the door. Did I mention cockroaches. Yep. Several. You can see what it would have been like in its heyday with lovely big rooms. But it's uncared for. Which is forgiven - as many have said - this is Cuba.... but that doesn't excuse rude staff. Dirty towels. Dirty crockery and cutlery in the restaurant. Grubby sunloungers. Very rude and scary lift attendants who made my daughter walk up 2 stories. (Excuse me but I can press my own bloody lift button!!!) and charging a fortune for wifi which will then not connect. This place needs a complete refurbishment and a lesson in customer service. Because believe me this level of service is not Cuba...
