Our OpinionA famous hotel located right in the middle of the local scene in Vedado, the†rooms are nice and updated and it has an open air disco on the top of the hotel.††
Wonderfully situated hotel, very convenient for 1 or 2-days stop in Havana city. Large rooms with panoramic windows and French balconies overlooking seaside and Malecon to the East or seaside and city to the west. Furniture is somewhat old in some rooms, but most rooms are fully renovated. Suites have panoramic views of sea and town. Large lobby with internet connection, very good restaurant for breakfast and dinner buffet or a-la-carte, few other restaurants one of them om the top floor overlooking while Havana. Good cleaning, good transportation service, parking in the underground level of the hotel. Choose the side facing city for more quiet nights, unfortunately there are some large AC-aggregates going day and night outside of hotel on the side facing Malecon.Very convenient, we stayed there 3 times and are happy with our choice.
We stayed four nights at the Libre. The first night on the 25th floor in a room that was so dated that it looked like Walter Cronkite had checked out the night before. The suite was huge but one room did not have air conditioning and the shower tub combination did not properly drain so we requested a move and were given a room on the 23rd floor. On this floor, several doors down from ours was room 2324 memorialized as Fidel's headquarters when he first occupied Havana and named the Castellana Suite.. The room on the 23rd floor was also dated but the air conditioning functioned. If the top five levels are renovated as another traveler has suggested this must be on a select basis . At the very top level there is a breakfast area which is clearly for a higher class of guest to which we did not have access. The breakfast on the ground floor is very generous and good with numerous stations and many different cuisines: fresh fruit, seafood, sausages, omelettes , etc. The desk at the ground floor did offer to exchange USD but according to the government's standard the USD is 20% weaker than the Convertible Peso so exchanging USD will be very costly. There are wifi cards sold on the ground floor. These can only be used in the hotel. By rubbing the paint off the card to reveal a serial number and entering this as the password access to the hotel wifi can be had with download and upload speeds of 1.2 MB per second. I bought a card for 7 convertible pesos for 5 hours at the government ETECSA office 3 blocks away. By walking to the far corner of the ground floor of the hotel by the bar we could pick up ETECSA's signal with similar speeds. The advantage of the ETECSA service is that it can also be accessed in designated areas outside of the hotel. The hotel is several blocks from the university and within walking distance of the Hotel Nacional and the Malecon sea wall . It is fun to walk along the wall at night when many people gather and sit on the wall to enjoy the sea air. Both the Hotel Nacional and the Malecon were visible from our room and view from both rooms were spectacular. We can't speak to pricing because this was part of a package tour.
Our first 4 nights where great- clean room - spacious- pool +city view.. Nice pool area!On our way back to Havana after visiting other cities for our last night stay the room given was very smelly and ac not working. Complaint at the reception and ask for a new room. The guy at the reception was very friendly and immediately called someone to check our room. The room ac was not working as mentioned above so they had offered a new room. The room was clean-spacious and ac working :) Very comfortable beds and very good breakfast!
this is important: If you book a room in this hotel, there are two different types of accomdations. The top 5 levels of the hotel in renovated with modern ammedities. it clean, and has a separate front desk, that will change your money and direct you around cuba. Now: the low level rooms are a bit rough. but i believe significantly cheaper. If your just need some where to sleep, then this is an ok option.Cons: the elevators are terrible, it takes forever to get one during peek times and forget about trying to use the stairs. Some of the doors will not open- a bit of a fire hazard.i really enjoyed my stay, i also spend the extra money and tipped well. The entire hotel staff helped us do everything. English is hard to come by in cuba so it helps to find people that speak alittle. I speak a high school level spansh and some of our words got lost in translations. There is a pool and hotel bar and a smoking lounge Close to restaurantsgreat view
We stayed here for 3 days and the room we got had a beautiful view of the ocean, el morro, havana. Would pull a chair and just enjoy the view. Then I found out Fidel stayed there. So close to the malecon, and a place you can hear famous singers and bands and buy books and stuff. I loved the ice cream they serve there that was my dinner one night. I was hardly there only to rest but met special people there: you have to meet Se√Īor Rene and I forget the other gentleman's name who is also a math teacher. On my last day found out Rene sings! He would go out of his way to see we were okay. When you stay here ask for Rene! and the girl who is in charge of the women's bathroom downstairs forgot her name such a sweet sweet young woman.Besos para todos!!!
