Memories Holguin Beach Resort

My policy while traveling is not to expect anything, so I won't be disappointed, BUT this was beyond that.Travelled to Memories Holguin Beach Resort from Sept 26, 2017, to Oct 10 for two weeks with a friend. We had to change room three times due to absent of Hot water, Air condition, and the TV??? The food is horrible, in an open restaurant full of flies and mosquitoes, I can not look at fish for next three months, as I was only eating fish. The pan where fish was frying was so dirty that I had to scrape off the top of the fish?? Brought the manager every day and showed it to Him, I even offered to clean the pan surface, to no avail. The disgusting smell of the sewer in the restaurant sucks and kills your appetite. The management is hopeless, you can complain and bring all your issues to their attention, they don't care or they have no control over the situation. The place is a good spot for retired folks from all over, so if you are looking for fun spot full of joy and activities, avoid this hotel. It is secluded and far away from any fun place like St. Lucia or Veradera. If you going to Holguin, avoid this resort. Don't be fooled by star rating. I have been in the two-star hotel and got a much better treatment than this 4.5-star resort.
This was the worst resort I’ve ever been too. Crabs were always floating in the pool. Pool deck was never cleaned once in the week we were there. Tiles missing from the bottom of the pool. They claim to have 7 restaurants but only 3 open. Buffet was the worst. Had to stick to eating pasta every day because it was the safest thing to eating. Smell from the sewers were horrendous while eating. We lost a day and a half of being able to sit on the balcony while workers painted the building. We were woken up to scrapping and banging at 7 am everyday. There are way too many stairs to get from the beach to the lobby. If you want to get a golf cart to pick you up it takes at least 30min of waiting. Internet had to be purchased for $1.50 per hour on a pre-paid card. For the amount of money I spent on this you would think there would be at least free internet in the lobby. Don’t waste your time and money with the Diamond Club experience. Bar fridge was never refilled. Private beach was not private and premium booze was cheap crap we by here in Canada. We had to leave the resort daily to make the most of the vacation without the disappointment of the resort. OH, yeah!!! Prostitution. We saw on numerous occasions where very young girls would hook up with very much older men. When the men would leave on their bus to go home, the young ladies would wait in the lobby for the arrival of there next older gentlemen coming from the next bus. Same for older ladies to young gentlemen. I couldn’t imagine what would happen if I brought my kids. Now fighting with Sunwing to get my money back. DONT DO IT!!!!!
I visited this resort with my husband and 12 year old daughter September 29 to October 6 of this year. We chose Holguin because our favourite Cuba destination, Cayo Santa Maria, has been severely damaged, courtesy of hurricane Irma. We chose Memories Holguin because Playa Pesquero was sold out and we did not want to return to Blau, Playa Costa Verde or Sol Luna. We have visited Memories Holguin, aka Grand Playa Turquesa, 10 years ago, and as we travelled with a small child at the time, we felt we did not get to experience the resort to its full potential.Being used to Premium Rooms, drinks, fridge service, etc, we decided to go for the Diamond Club package. We think it was worth it. Fast check in, check out, late check out, premium drinks, beach towels in the room, private section on the beech where no early morning reservations were necessary, were some of the perks that made our vacation more enjoyable. I should also mention the great beach bar chair service we received from Orlan, who circulated every 10-15 minutes offering drinks and making sure we were not wanting for anything. The beach is private and has its own charm. We still prefer the Santa Cayo Maria beach, however the staff worked very hard at maintaining it super clean and we enjoyed the time spent there. There was a snack bar on the beach that served pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs at lunch time. My daughter preferred the pizza, which was not available every day of our stay and sometimes required 10-15 minutes of waiting in line, however not enough of an imposition to spoil our stayThe Diamond package ensures you a room in the 400-500 block, which is were you want to be. We stayed in room 414; spacious, very clean, no issues with plumbing or the A/C. Close to the beach and the other amenities. The maid was superb, changed the bedding and the towels every day, including the last day which we did not expect. The lobby was nice and clean. Staff spent a lot of time keeping chairs lined up and table surfaces clean. The service was great. We had to turn staff down 2-3 times a day as there was always someone eager to take orders. Special koodos to Lynnet who was knowledgeable and always served us with a smile. The main buffet was closed for the duration of our stay and we had to have breakfast and lunch at the beach restaurant. Due to its close proximity to a swamp it could be smelly at times, but knowing the source of the smell we could go beyond that. As the restaurant is much smaller than the main buffet the variety of the food served was impacted, however we never went hungry. We had fresh grilled meat and seafood every day, would have appreciated more fresh vegetables other than cabbage, but again, not enough of an issue to spoil our stay.Diamond Package entitles one to as many a la cartes as desired, so we took advantage of this mainly to stay away from the mosquitoes at night. Unfortunately, due to the mosquitoes, every a la carte was held in the same restaurant, the Romantico, as it was the only enclosed restaurant on the resort; however, the varied menus and the great service made it easy for us to get over it although we are used to resorts that offer a wide variety of a la carte restaurants. The resort is beautiful, pools are quite spectacular, yes there are stairs but they are manageable and keep you slim. Everything is well maintained and all staff is friendly and willing to make everyone's stay a pleasant one.I would say the only negative is the 24hr snack bar; great location, clean, spacious, friendly staff, however other than hamburgers and cheese and ham sandwiches they never have anything else listed on the menu (which by the way it's quite lengthy).Overall, we had a great vacation and would gladly return to this resort.
We just returned from this resort this morning through Air Canada. We signed up for "Diamond Club". What a joke. First of all when u sign up there is supposed to be perks. One being a better room and concierge services along with a bottle of rum in your room. We received none of this. For an extra 20 bucks per person per day (3 people) you would hope to get what u pay for. We approached the front desk and the public relations 5 times about this and were told it would be rectified. Needless to say it wasnt. Very disappointing. There were a ton of stairs, which was fine until I put my back out from sleeping on springs sticking out of the bed. We are not new to Cuba. We are aware of the complicated matters with the food. My husband ate minimal as when going to buffet by beach the smell turned him off. The lobby staff especially Uni was exceptional. Always made sure were looked after and very kind. Our tour guide Rudy was great as well. The pool bartenders were great especially Geovanise. There was also a young lady for most of our time there who was very timid but extremely lovely as well. We did a Hobbie cat ride the last day with a gentleman who was so gracious and pleasant. We tipped heavily because the people tried hard. As they always do. We love Cuba and it's people, But the ones in higher positions seem very uninterested which is very disappointing. To think something as simple as a bottle of rum what was promised and paid for would be an easy fix. We are in customer service and we fix any issues anybody approaches us with. To think that this is one of their top money makers they would do what they can to make everyone satisfied and important. Now for a family resort, it was very disgusting to witness an old man from Canada who had "purchased" the accompaniment of a very dangerously young Cuban girl and to hear him demean and degrade her in her own country in front of families and fellow Cubans was absolutely crushing to witness. The management is well aware of these transactions and turn a blind eye to disgusting hideous behaviour. I am not naive to this type of behaviour but I have never seen it so blatantly obvious especially on a family resort. I was told by other that this is a regular occurance at this resort. When I had to leave the area of these guests before I lost my temper was what ruined my vacation to a degree. We would have been able to overlook the other issues that occurred but this was the deal breaker. I was embarrassed as a Canadian to see this. His reactions to this young lady when she didn't remove her shirt and shorts fast enough literally made me ill. Then when she did he sexualized her in front of other guests including staff. Sorry Memories, this behavior is unacceptable at any cost!! Will not return due to this (should be criminal) behaviour.
As most of the people we spoke to we where also relocated to this resort, we are frequent vacationers to Cuba so I am not NEW to Cuba We are a large family 4 children and one uses a wheelchair I did research and asked questions and was told we have no issues!! NOT completely true yes you can access the resort but it’s very long and all hills some spots are ramps for pools but not all and there’s stairs many stairs so often we carried him and his chair only handful of times did staff offer to help we where here 14 nights Resort it self is beautiful we stayed in a attached single story bungalow and had not guests on the opposite side so we didn’t need to worry on kids loudness we also did diamond hit will get to that soon The buildings are all in decent shape grounds are up kept well no garbage if something breaks the repairs almost same day The buffet is off season so we ate on top of a swamp every day smelled horrible and with sitting water come even more mosquitoes and bugs I found staff in buffet lazy and most of the time rude servers this is almost every visit we needed to get our own beverages and request water again we paid extra for diamond club!!! The people that prepared our food where all so happy and cheerful food got better as week went on I assumed was because many vegetables here damaged from Irma the management needs to really really step up on the severs and have them work was pretty hard for me to leave tips when they did nothing not even clear our table as we finished often 12 plates would be piled and of course covered in flies as we where out side the Cuban restaurant was currently being used for daily buffets Pools pools where beautiful we choose many at different times of day They offers all restaurants but was located in one only air conditioned spot staff here was good some where great and food was amazing Bar pool the man is so talented the tricks he did good job Beach I went once not what I was expecting as we always travel to cayo Santa Maria sand was different water was never clear seaweed hard broken shells just not what I was expecting from our last 6 Cuba vacation Kids club Ali she was amazing huge shout out to her she made my girls vacation so much better she was only staff at the time for the most part and was wonderful even my son stayed with her at times she truly was a gem in this resort By day 6 I wanted to leave was board we met up with some other Canadians and hung out and then we met ROLY on the entertainment team he completely changed our holiday for the better thank goodness thank you ROLYDiamond club we paid a nice penny for this we are use to this from our other resort the only thing we used for diamond club was late check out and we still needed to pay extra as we had late flight even after I checked out of our one room at 930 am not exactly sure what this resort did to say they have diamond club but I was not impressed at all and huge waste of money but I am not sure if this also gave us the room we had as it was really nice Mojito we ate here a lot the man can remover his name was amazing he cooked 5 of our meals 15$ per person but the food was worth it loved coming here Lobby servers where lovely all though we only went in the evening as it is at the top of the resort and was hard to get up My thought is this resort is great for younger crowd or people that keep to them self as many staff don’t acknowledge your there we still can. It figure out what we did wrong we tipped brought gifts as we love to do this and I think we are nice people but staff especially buffet didn’t seem to care at all Had some neat evening entertainment aqua and night show someBands Resort has many different included activities and they where amazing and fun especially Friday cuba day horses come some little animals pig roast Even though we become good friends with two staff we will not return this resort was not for us
