Cuba was simply fantastic if you put aside some of the small anomalies (long wait in the airport, shortage of some produce etc.). The facilities at the resort are fantastic, the locals are always polite and helpful. There is a tip culture for just about everything, but unlike certain other destinations it’s not mandatory and is appreciated rather than expected. The “a la carte” restaurants at the resort we very good and the only thing to note that is 2 of them will expect you to wear trousers. These restaurants are air conditioned, but still a bit over the top for me considering the temperature is August (in the region of 37 Celsius with 70% humidity). The room was a bit basic, but very clean and did for what we needed. We booked a couple of excursions that were a tad more expensive that I’d expected, but by the same token worth it to see “real Cuba”. Overall, it was a great experience and a relaxing holiday, so I’ll be back at some time as were many of the people we’d spoken to who had returned to the resort several times (one were on their 11th visit).
I just came back for my third visit to Playa Pesquero with my wife and kids (9yo and 6yo), and I'm happy to say that we found the quality of our stay to be consistent with our other experiences at this resort. We will surely be returning for a 4th visit in the future and we would recommend this resort to our closest friends without a doubt. Management has been making some improvements around the grounds, new look for the lobby, refurbished and renovated buildings, new palapas around the pool. The food was again of the highlights of our trip.We stayed in block 28, which is one of the newly renovated blocks, the room looked and felt new, the AC was quiet. For a more in-depth review of the amenities please check out my previous reviews which are, in my opinion, still valid. I anybody from management is reading this review, in my opinion the à la carte restaurants are in need of improvements. The food and service at the à-la-cartes was again excellent but the AC quality and look of many of the restaurants needs to be improved/refreshed (specially the Romantico and Italian) .Thank you
If you've never been here then you will most probably enjoy it. However, the hotel/resort has certainly gone downhill maintenance wise in the 3 years since we last visited. it's not a 4 star anymore, it's now a 3 star All the water features save the fountain & the Gondola at the front have just been emptied & left. the exception being at the reception area where they've placed table & chairs in the recesses that then fills up with rain water. The small craft stalls that used to line the path to the beach are gone relocated (so we were told) to a shopping centre off a roundabout on the way to the hotel. If you want to take a look, than catch a horse taxi or cab as it's too hot to walk the 30 mins. to get there. The 'Fish 'n chips' & hotdog stalls by the pool have gone & the small pool bar that used to open late & have live music now shuts at at 16:45 - shame as it did have a great vibe there. All in all the decor/state of the buildings were in need of maintenance, the wardrobe doors in our room kept falling out of the runners (in need of replacing) & the bathroom light only worked if it felt like! No room service menu in rooms, reception couldn't help & neither could the rep. Trying to order anything over the phone was impossible. No number for reception, dial 1 number for a list of room service meals but dial another number to order (ringing but no answer etc - gave up in the end) Also the staff at the beach water sports (Catamaran) were not keen on going out after 2pm, even though we had a time slot booked, using 'strong winds' etc as an excuse. I'm all in favour of safety, but the Catamarans in the next resort were still still out. Now if you tip them it's another story, as we did the week earlier. Also the food in the restaurants wasn't the standard as 3yrs ago. Give the Trattoria a miss as the food was inedible. The entertainment hadn't changed at all in 3yrs except that sometimes the show advertised didn't take place. Also as it's a very hot country, they never put all the fans on in the reception/lounge/bar area & none at all on in the theatre should you go there to watch a show. I had the impression that they just couldn't afford the additional cost On the plus side, the resort is clean & the staff very helpful & polite.
Where to start! I have been to Caribbean before St Lucia & Antigua both 5 star accommodation, so when I booked a 5 star in Cuba I thought I know it's not going to be of the same standard as other islands but wouldn't be far off maybe a 4 in comparison, how wrong could I have been I have been to better 3 star accommodation. Let start with the food Well I felt it unsafe to eat after the first day I got extremely ill with stomach cramps and could not be no more than a few steps away from the loo. I was scared to eat living on coffee and biscuits. With the hotel being so isolated there was no where else to eat, after a few days I tried the ala carte, not very ala carter at all buffet food served to your table under/over cooked and stale bread ! Few hours later the stomach cramps came back. Back to coffee and biscuits mmmm (take your own crisps none onsale in Cuba will help when your starving and feeling weak from hunger ! ) the hotel is run down and in need of serious Renovation the rooms are falling to bits the pool area is painful to walk around and tiles missing it's a hazard waiting to happen. I had such high hopes as I wanted to see the real Cuba before tourism takes over. With lack of good food all I was craving was a McDonald's or KFC so felt my need for food and lack of it over shadowed the reason I wanted to see Cuba. Before the big American fast food outlets took over but by week to I was cursing the Cubans calling them stupid for not allowing this. Now I'm fully fed at home I can truly see how wrong I was but at the time hunger sets in and I just wanted generic food that is the same across the world, Cuba is truly an unspoilt paradise lined with some of the best beaches I have been to but this hotel truly spoilt my experience. Bad food of poor quality unkept hotel and poor hygiene and cross contamination ment I could not eat, could not pass wind with confidence more like fear! And craved so much of what I left behind in the UK sorry Cuba I will not return playa pesquero has truly ruined what should have been a truly unique experience shame on you !
I've just returned from a 10 night stay here and me and my friend had the best time ever! Yes it's dated, but the rooms are so clean and are cleaned everyday. Yes the food probably isn't 5 star food but when we went to the buffets we went to the islands where they cook the food fresh for you. You just need to be careful what you eat like you would anywhere. All the staff are so lovely and the service they give is amazing! We never had a bad experience with food. If you want to avoid buffet food then book the restaurants as the food we had there was lovely. Beach was amazing, highly recommend the island paradise excursion. It's just a great resort and they are trying very hard to please everyone but unfortunately you can't always please everyone! I would definitely go back!
