We have just returned from Playa Pesquero and have had an amazing time. The hotel is lovely and the staff were brilliant. A special mention for Barbara and kenia who work in the main buffer at breakfast. These two ladies worked extremely hard, always found everyone a table and never stopped smiling. The rooms in the hotel were very big and kept very clean. Air conditioning at times could be hit and miss but as it was incredibly hot outside, it was still cooler in the rooms. The food in the hotel was ok. There is something for everyone. Even the fussy eaters. The omelette and pancake ladies were fabulous as was the pancake lady in the evening. They are working in incredible heat yet they always have a smile on their face. Before going, we were told that you get better service if you tip .we didn't find this to be the case. Yes they are incredibly grateful when you tip, but as long as you are polite and are not rude, you will be treated the way you wish to be. We witnessed people shouting at the staff which is not acceptable. The mojito bar and beer garden were fab with excellent fried chicken and tapas being served. Gerald in the swim up pool bar and the lady in the other pool bar do a fabulous job sometimes under trying circumstances.The only negative points are that we felt that there should be better communication in the hotel as we did not know what day the pig roast would be on. I had an issue with items going missing from our room. At first, I ignored the fact that two items of make up and a necklace were missing. However, towards the end of our holiday, I went back to our room to find a pair of earrings missing. I reported this to guest relations and thought that was the end of it. The next day I hiked from the beach to the room to find both room keys had been disabled and was told to go to Guest Relations. I hiked to GR ( it is a very large hotel), and was met by a lovely lady who assisted me in translating. In the room was the Thomas Cook rep and the security man Thomas. Thomas spoke to me as though I was a thief and that hotel policy was to call the sniffer dogs into our room. I had to write two statements, yet Thomas was rude and relentless and I still had to state that I didn't hold the hotel responsible. I'm not easily intimidated, however, this man upset me and left me feeling very vulnerable. His customer service skills were a disgrace and I feel that he is not a good fit in a hotel that prides itself on its staff . He, for me, was the only negative thing about this hotel. Everything else was wonderful and I would definitely return, albeit I wouldn't report anything missing.
We arrived here and walked in to the lobby it’s a lovely area with plenty of seating area The bar area and entertainment at the far end we didn’t go to any of the entertainment The room was slightly dated but a nice size The pool was a plunge pool but great to sit in and cool off had a bar which was great we sat round quieter side of pool The food was great buffet breakfast and lunch and dinner fresh cooking stations for all meals although 4 a la Carte restaurants free needs to be booked plus 4 a small charge romantica was great and the Caribbean fresh cooked lobster squid and prawns flambé at table Beer garden was great for tapas lunch Staff that stood out Mabel and Katerine at the pool bar always a smile for you Ronaldo and Daniel and Alexander at the lobby bar We upgraded for 3 nights at premium side of hotel and wow All meals a la carte in air conditioned restaurant arianna was a star Butler service was great Hugo was fab whatever you want in your room was not to much trouble Separate pool and swim up bar plus pool restaurant The rooms had a whirlpool bath and outdoor shower If you have this option take it up Beach was lovely white sand and crystal clear water The only bad thing was nothing to do with hotel it was the mosquitos Would we return yes If you get the chance go with Alex in his 1955 Chevrolet bel air trip to holguin
People very friendly and weather hot; stayed between 03-17 October 2017. Food hygene is a problem. Food is not stored at the correct tempertures, milk warm, potatoe wedges cold and not cooked properly, however, there are various meats cooked to order, 1st week no veg only what appeared to be tinned. No fresh lettuce, tomatoes or general salad items. Although it may be that these items are hard for Cuba to produce. No tomato ketchup, evidently because its American and Cuba is not allowed to have it?? (really) Breakfast is not too bad again kindly people cook pancakes and eggs to order. !st week no chocolate sauce and very spasmodic, I did find a nice syrup type sauce, but this was only once. 2nd week chocolate sauce materilised. Our room was functioal but had mould growing in various places, particularly within the bathroom. My husbands bed very squeeky and bless him when laid down matress would folded around him, my bed not bad. Work men decorating rooms in the same block (45) so maybe the room we were in is due for a make over. Air con not the best, arrived and relised air con not working on high reported to reception and tried to explain its not a problem tonight as we have only just arrived and want to go to bed after an 17 hour day, we asked if the air con could be fixed the next day, yes yes thats fine 2 hours later the maintenance person woke us up to fix the air con, we explained we are in bed, 4 days later they fixed the air con. Mosquitoes are a HUMUNGUS problem with many people, including myself bitten 20 times or more, even after applying Cubas own branded repeliant, continuosly through out the day and night, available at the shop and pharmacy - shop is cheaper brand 12CUC. Clearly the hotel has not fumigated any areas to reduce them. Huge spider baby tarantula curled up outside our bedroom door, I screamed closed door, husband went out chased spider off but IT ran after him... hehehehehe. Only 1 litre of bottled water is put in the rooms when we asked for MORE we were told to get some from the shop and pay for it. We have been to several Caribbean islands and in the hotelrooms they have supplied baskets of fruit as much water in the room as you can possible drink, alcohol optics and at least 4 cans of beer per day and a bottle of wine, the funny side to this is all we drink is the water.This hotel has not been up to 4* standard, we expect and Thomas Cook should not be advertising the hotel as 4* We did not upgrade and the examples above are representative of the standard accommodation.
Just got back from a great two week holiday. The rooms are large with a huge bed and have everything you need. The mini bar is included and is topped up with beer, soft drinks and water daily. The air con in the room needed looking at and this was done very quickly along with the staff spraying the room for mosquitos. The lobby bar area is huge and the staff very welcoming. A small tip goes a long way and they work very hard to make you feel comfortable. The WiFi is in this area and is very good at around £1.10 for an hour.The buffet restaurant we found to be good, it had its issues a few nights but nothing like some of the reviews on here. We stuck to having everything freshly cooked in front of us and never had any stomach issues at all. There are flies around, it’s the Caribbean wet season so expect a few. Mosquitos were around, we used room devices and sprays and didn’t get bitten half as much as some guests. If anything the hotel could do with smoking the resort a few more times.The resort is huge! The beach is great and has a bar, pizza station and a restaurant within walking distance of the sun lounges. Snorkelling equipment, sail boats, wind surfing and pedalos are all included and so are the beach towels which can be changed daily. The restaurants are very good but the air conditioning was not working in the two we chose so we didn’t bother dining in the others as the temperature was warmer inside than outside. I had a birthday meal and was treated with a birthday cake, sparkling wine and a pianist. It was very special.We didn’t have any issues, we aren’t pool people and enjoyed the sea and local trips, Holguin is worth a day out. I’m never fond of a pool bar as guests have different hygiene practices, we avoided it but we do wherever we go. We didn’t give it five stars as we thought the restaurants air conditioning, the water gardens had be turned into seating areas and some of the buffet food could have been better BUT we are looking to book again for April as it was such a great hotel to stay in and the staff we amazing! Hildelisa our housekeeper was excellent, Alfredo on the beach was very hard working bringing drinks to everyone, Nelson, Mikel and all the bar staff were fantastic.If you are going to take gifts over we found reading glasses, tooth paste and tooth brushes and gardening gloves for the grounds keepers all were very much appreciated along with tips. All in all we will be returning soon and hope to see the staff again.
We stayed at Playa Pesquero from October 6th to the 13th. This marked our 20th trip to Cuba and our 2nd visit to this hotel.A good time was had by all. Considering the very active hurricane season, we lucked out with gorgeous sunny days. Only two short downpours during our week and hardly any cloud cover otherwise. It was very very hot and some days had very little wind. I’ll never complain about the heat in Cuba.. but this trip came close Overall, I would say we found the hotel to have gone slightly downhill, but barely so, since our last visit in 2012. It’s still a solid choice and I’ll continue to recommend it. That said, here are some of our observations, good and bad.The GoodThe lobby area has been updated since our last trip. What was plain wood before has been painted white and the reception desk is new. It all looks great. We spent a lot of time in the lobby area. The seats are comfortable, there is plenty of seating available, and the sculptures, fountains, etc make for a nice atmosophere.The coffee bar is fabulous and I love that it’s separate from the regular bar. Saves everyone a lot of time. The bar service is quick and friendly around the clock, even at the busiest of times, there is never more than a minute or two of a wait to be served. We loved the tapas menu at the Beer Garden! A few times they were out of bacon, so the bacon wrapped shrimp became battered shrimp on a stick (shrimp pogos!!) even better! The breaded chicken bites are awesome, as are the salmon tapas. Such a nice break from the buffet or standard snack bar burgers/ pizzas. This place is massive and there are so many options for lunch! Beach restaurant, beer garden, mojito bar, pizza on the beach, italian trattoria for pasta.. No way anyone can have a valid complaint of repetitiveness or lack of options. If you ate a hamburger everyday at lunch, that was your fault.Customer service is impressive. We emailed ahead mentioning we were returning guests and that we were celebrating my husbands birthday during our stay. They met our room request- we were in 1709- perfect location! Right behind the swimup bar, it’s about as central as you can get to the main areas. We had a bottle of rum in the room, an invitation to the returning guests dinner, a prebooked a la carte meal for my husbands birthday, and a cake in our room! Wonderful service.Little things matter. The lobby bar never switches to plastic cups like some other hotels do late at night. Most of the bathrooms are spotless. There’s always some snack in the lobby- muffins and breads in the mornings, pastries, cold meats, cheeses and pickles in the afternoon. Beer in cans and bottles at the Pipa (so you can take them to go!) The towel hut never ran out of towels, our room was always cleaned well and early in the day. The fridge was always restocked and was super cold. Good water pressure, hot water, good AC. These all may be “expected” but as frequent visitors to Cuba, we know that this is not the case everywhere.The beach! No words. The water is incredible, barely moves most days and looks like glass. Just fabulous.The not-so-goodThe beach is narrow and gets reallllly crowded. They may have the chairs but they don’t really have the space to accommodate everyone. During our stay, I don’t think the hotel was even half full, so I can’t imagine what its like at full capacity!There’s not a whole lot going on at night. We tried the cigar bar once, but didn’t enjoy the atmosphere. I don’t know if it doesn’t have AC or just wasn’t working well, but it was very hot and very bright. Not like a bar, more like a doctors office.. My husband, the cigar nut, was disappointed. After the show, the lobby quiets down. The Mojito bar is open late most nights till 2am and had kareoke, if that’s your thing! Beer Garden is also open 24 hours. Its not that there is no where to go, just that there isn’t much going on.The pool didn’t look that great. I wouldn’t quite say it was green, but definitely cloudy. WHY do people bring their children to the swim up bar?? The pool takes up most of the resort. There is plenty of room for kids to swim. Getting slapped in the head with a pool noodle while I’m ordering my cerveza was not very cool. I wish they’d make swim up bars adult only territory.As I said earlier, most of the bathrooms are spotless, but there is something definitely wrong with the one at the Mojito bar. Sewage problems of some sort, it smells absolutely horrible.I feel like I maybe should have started with the gripes. I don’t want to end my review on a bad note. Overall, this was a great trip and a great hotel. Of course there are small issues here and there, but with such an enormous complex with so many guests, they really are very few in the grand scheme of things. So, go! It’s one of the good ones.
