Location: Beachfront, 3 minutes to Varadero, 25 minutes from the airport.
Pros:- Close to the heart of Varadero- Easy to book Excursions and shuttles through the agents working there-Tiendas open convenient hours- Helpful staff- Omelette station was pretty good- Italian A la Carte was really good- The shows were so good! Love the musical performances and dancingCon's:- We woke up to slamming doors, loud voices in the hallways and staff rolling carts down the hallway EVERY SINGLE NIGHT/EARLY MORNING- No bath mat + short shower curtain = fall risk. ( I saw 3 people wearing slings and bandages on their wrists at our resort in one week)- No fresh towels for quite a few days- The people that work at the resort visibly do not want to be there, but I cannot always blame them based on the type of guests that come there- The pool activities were pretty lame
***PRO TIP*** Bring a travel mug/jug/waterbottle(any size, we saw some people with jugs the size of melons) if you are taking an all inclusive trip like here at Palma Real (this was our first trip and we did not know this trick). The bartenders will fill up your mug/jug/waterbottle with any drink so that you dont have to keep going back to the bar to get drinks! The room: We stayed at the Palma Real in January for 5 days, we were in building 2. Our room was very clean when we arrived. We were missing a shower curtain but that was put in the next moring but the cleaning staff so really not a big deal and there was no need for us to let anyone know abou it. Our room and bathroom were cleaned each day with new towels so that was great. There was a safe in the closet and you need to pay for the key (they key is not exspensive so if you are concnered with losing anything get the safe key). Our keycard stopped working one afternoon but it was no problem, the staff at the front desk gave us another one and we were good to go!The Pools: Both pools were very nice, very clean. The pool with the bar had music playing during the day, you can play volleyball in the pool. The back pool is more quiet and relaxed. Chairs around everywhere which is great. The beach: The is beautiful and all the restorts do their best to keep their areas clean. The beach is about 2 minutes away from the restort, really short walk. First come first serve for a chair so if you are picky, get to the beach early! The bars: the best bartender is the nice blonde hair lady at the beach bar! She is so nice and makes the BEST mojitos! Go see her be nice and TIP! The pool bartenders seemed to be the skimpiest with liquor but all the bartenders in the lobby were very nice, quick and made great drinks. The drink list is pretty good too so there is a variety of drinks to try. The food: The is a buffet and they are obviously making things that are easy to make, inexspensive and for the most part what people like. There is a good variety, chicken, seafood, beef. Lots of fruit, veggies, breads and deserts. This is the part in reviews where you see how stuck up and picky people are. This isnt 5 star food and its not 5 star food because you paid for a 2-3 star hotel. If you want fine dining, pay for a more exspenisve trip. Everything is edible and the staff are very nice. They could upgrade their buffet a little, the food temperature was a little low but nothing was ever raw or under cooked. With the trip you get dinner at their resturants, we chose to go to the itlanian one and the food was great! The pasta a pizza were really good! Make reservations its worth it!We had a great time on our trip and we would go back! Its affordable and as long as you are realistic with your expectations, this is a great place. There is entertainment offered every night as well at the resort. The resort in close to clubs, bars, resturants and shops/venders, take a walk and explore. There is a nice park up the street as well! Now I feel like I should address something that both my boyfriend and I noticed but has NOTHING to do with the resort: they dont get to pick their clientele. We are from Montreal and we are both bilingual (English and French with English being our first language). Before our trip we took the time to learn some basic Spanish, we did this because we were going to another country and its a decent thing to try and speak the native language of the country your visiting. With that being said, the Quebecers staying at this resort disgusted us. They were EXTREMELY rude to the staff and expected them to be able to speak French when these people themselves cant even speak English and obviously did not have any interest in learning even the basics of Spanish. You mean to tell me you couldnt be bothered to learn hello, yes, please and thank you in spanish but you want the staff to be able to speak French? Not only did all of the Quebecers have this disgusting additude (we were so disgusted we started telling people we were from Canada but left out we are from Quebec) they also did not tip. The people who work at the restort depend on tips to live and these people couldnt even be bothered to tip them a dollar. It was horrifying to see the staff being treated with such disrespect.
Myself and my mother stayed at this resort from April 13-20. This was my first time and her 3 times at Palma Real. I am not going to lie leading up to the trip I was very nervous about the conditions after reading so many negative reviews. I am here to tell you DO NOT listen to them!!! The resort was beautiful! We had absolutely nothing to complain about the whole week we were there. I am going to go into more detail about my thoughts on the resort below. Check In/ lobby- The check in went very smooth. We arrived at the resort at 3 pm and could not check into our rooms until 4 pm. This was no big deal as they had a room to put your baggage in while you wait. We dropped our bags off and headed for the bar! The lobby was very nice, it had been a year since my mother visited the resort and she was pleased with the new furniture and upgrades in the lobby. They had many seats which were nice as you never had to worry about where to sit. It gets very loud and the bar can have long lines as its where most people hang out but hey it’s a perfect place to socialise with other travellers! The front desk staff was always happy and more than willing to help you out. They had wifi cards available for 2 pesos for 1 hour of service I had no trouble connecting anytime during the week. Rooms- We stayed in the 3rd building which had a perfect location. There were no steps so perfect for someone with mobility issues. Our rooms were large and very clean. The maid was always sure to have fresh towels and bedding daily she was amazing! Our view was “ocean view” which was nice as we got a breeze coming through the patio doors. There was always hot water no matter what time of time or night you took a shower so hot it almost burned!Pools/Bars/Beach- There are 4 bars on this resort (lobby, building 1, building 4 and swim up bar). All of them had a variety of drinks we loved the green slush and rum YUM!. The lobby bar did get busy and in the evening there were long lines but hey they can only go so fast! We never tried the bar in building 1 but hear they make a great Banana Mama. The swim up bar was good, the blonde bartender was a sweetheart we really enjoyed her. The secret gem of this resort was the bar in building 4. Boris the bartender was absolutely amazing he takes so much pride in creating quality drinks and always is smiling. We spent most of our downtime hanging out in his bar as the company was great! There are 4 pools (swim up bar pool, deeper pool near that, quiet pool and kid pool) Yes they are cold and yes the tile needs some work but it was nothing for us to waste our breath worrying about. We did not go to the beach as we are pool people so I cannot comment on that or the beach bar.Food- There are 3 reservation required restaurants (Italian, international and Cuban) we did not try them so I cannot comment on them. The buffet was very good do not listen to the reviews there was always something to eat and never an issue with how hot the food was. We loved the fresh bread station! The man who cooks the omelets in the morning was the happiest person I have ever met! The waiters were great and always had a table saved for us! Yes, the buffet gets repetitive but hey I'm a picker eater and was far from ever hungry! There is also a snack bar which served hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches and fries it is 24 hours which was nice!Location- The location of this resort is perfect! It is located right in the heart of Varadero. There is a hop and go bus which cost 5 pesos a day which allows you to get on and off as many times as you want. There are many shops and restaurants within walking distance of the resort which is a nice change. Calle 62 and the Beatles bar is within walking distance as well. We LOVED the Beatles bar, there was a live band each night I was blown away by how great they were! Calle 62 is a great place to see locals and experience a Cuban party. Varadero at night is very safe and never once felt uneasy about walking at nighttime. My suggestions-Do not listen to the reviews; do not make any assumptions till you are there! If you keep an open mind you will have a great time!-Get to know the workers and locals they are great people!-We exchanged money at the airport and regret not exchanging all of it we got the best rate there. The hotel lobby also exchanges money and there is a few banks within Varadero. -We got a great price on rum to take home at the small store on the resort, much better then carrying it around the airport if you buy it at duty free.-We made sure to take some extra money to tip the workers at the restaurants. 1 peso goes a long way!-We took gifts to give to the workers such as razors, soap, and deodorant. They were more than thankful for these gifts.-Do not eat the restaurant the airport, they accept Canadian money but it is a total rip off! $26 for 2 small burgers, 6 individual fries on each plate and 2 sodas. All in all we hard an amazing week! We met some great friends from all over and truely loved our stay! We cannot wait to come back and visit!
The truth about Palma Real....If you looking for luxury, this is not for you!!!Great place for the not so picky traveller....The price is right!!! We travelled with a group of about 15 people that arrived at different times through out the week April 8-20th.......The pool bar was the place to be with a great party vibe all day......There is a nice quite pool at the back which looked clean and well taken care off (we did not use this pool).......Most of us stayed in building 1 right at the pool bar which is where we spent the majority of our time while on the resort........Rey (Chispa) lol of the Entertainment staff was AWESOME and a lot of fun and very helpful for anyone that needed help, ideas and even translations.......The food was food........The buffet was hit and miss on some things, but we usually stick to eating what we know while on resort........There are burger, dogs and sandwiches at the 24hr snack bar that were fine and we had quite a few times......The main 24hr bar in the lobby could definitely use a better serving system or bartender or 2 (I would hate to see the chaos in there if it was raining)........The lobby and lounge were very nice though.........The cleaning staff and staff in general were more then nice and helpful considering the demand on them and some of the ignorant people they have to deal with (even the grounds crew)..........Great location if you want to tour bars and awesome little restaurants and in a very safe environment........There was always a hopping place to go for night life, bands or just a stroll..........There is an awesome guy that bbq's chicken right across the road from Callie 62 bar (not even a block from hotel on side street)....The chicken was probably the best chicken I've every had at $2 per plate (probably 1/2 a chicken)........The beach is about a 5-8 minute easy walk across the road and has a bar for hotel guests Exchange at the hotel was a little steep ( .50 on Canadian dollar approx.)......There is a bank 100 yrds outside of front door which was much better ( I think around .72 on dollar).NOTE: Bring your own toilet paper !!! Even bring a little when you hit the streets as it not top quality and not always easily available at places like airport, bars and restaurant....Sometimes it might even cost you snmall fee or tip
Traveled with 2 adults and 4 kids from April 11, 2017 - April 18, 2017. The 3-star rating is spot on. Perfect location, near shops, bars, restaurants, and short walk to the beach. Experienced travelers to Cuba will tell you there is absolutely nothing wrong with the buffet - it's nothing to write home about but there is always plenty to eat and the Italian restaurant is really good so don't forget to make a reservation! Treat yourself to some of the dozens of local restaurants within walking-distance if you really get tired of the buffet. Also, the snack bar serves hotdogs, burgers, grilled cheese, and (sometimes) fries too.We intentionally requested a room in building 4 to avoid the party-goers of building 1 & 2, so we had no complaints of noise. Our pool was quiet and clean and perfect for relaxing. (Pool at building 1 was always a big party). Hot water was hit or miss, but again, experienced travelers know this is sometimes just how it is in Cuba. Room was nice, clean, and the AC worked. We did have some ants - but they didn't get into any of our stuff and they seemed to disappear once we got rid of the candy we'd been keeping in our room.Staff was mostly friendly, some not so much but that's true of anywhere you go in the world and I'd be more inclined to complain about the French-Canadians than the hotel staff... If you book a cheap vacation to Cuba just know what you are getting and you won't be disappointed. If you're not an experienced traveler, or you prefer 5-star accommodations, then you should probably go somewhere else. If you know what a 3-star in Cuba means, you will leave feeling totally satisfied :)
