Blau Marina Varadero

A very pleasant resort in Varadero. The Blau Marina Resort is a great resort that offer luxurious amenities. Tons of food choices. The buffet items are probably the freshest of the lot. There are also plenty of a la carte restaurants as well. OK drink choices. The bars very rarely keep top-shelf items, so the drinks taste rather watered down. Great rooms that are well-maintained and cleaned regularly. The service from the team can vary. However, the majority of staff members are pleasant and attentive. There are plenty of activities offered, so you'll never have a shortage of things to do. Amazing beach location with plenty of loungers. One of the better choices to stay in Varadero.
Location: Directly on the beach, 35 min from the Varadero airport.
Just some useful info: The largest resort located at the end of the peninsula. Very quite and relaxing atmosphere. If you want night life, look elsewhere. Currently under new management and under going major renovation thru out the resort(yes in Cuba), I gave this resort the highest rating for its 3-4km pristine beach, dry and steam saunas, and BEST value for our money! PS: No more departure tax, it was included in our package(bonus)
I chose this hotel because it looked a bit more elegant than Sol Palmeras where I went last time and because it had several pools. As it turned out, the hotel had just re-opened after two months of repairs and most of the work was not finished. None of the three specialty restaurants were open and there was only a small buffet available for all meals for two of the days I was there. The big buffet opened on the 3rd day and was about 20% of the size of the one at Sol Palmeras. The quality of the good was worst than at Sol Palmeras, which is really not a good thing! We were offered the possibility to have dinner 3 times at the restaurant located on the elite side of the complex, on the cayó. Even there, the choice was very limited. 4 appetizers, 4 entrees and 4 desserts on the menu. After complaining vehemently We were upgraded to a suite, but it was not done graciously... The internet almost never worked and the largest pool opened on my last day there. Instead of telling people directly about what was not open or running, the staff hoped that we would not find out or that, if we did, it would be late enough for people not to ask for compensation. The bathrooms for women next to the main lobby was under construction and opened on the fourth and last day of our stay. I will never go back to this hotel and advise everyone to avoid it. Yes, it is Cuba, but my experience at other places was much better and actually cheaper. I heard that the Blau was better than the Blau Marinera although the Marinera is more recent. Not sure I even want to take the chance to try....
And never to return again!!Arrived Tuesday Nov 22 and the hotel was closed. They checked us in at Cayo Libertad in a beautiful suite Room 1644. All the restaurants and facilities were closed. They had one little restaurant open at the very end ,for all your meals. The food was disgusting. The second evening there, we had to go to Varadero to enjoy an evening meal.Every day more and more people arrived to a closed resort. Finally 4 days later they opened the main buffet area and the food got better every day. By the end of our 7 days, i noted one a la carte was open. Our 3rd floor suite was beautiful. 2 bathrooms, separate living room. newly painted. Stocked with 1 bottle of water, pop and some beer. The resort itself is several buildings all in a row, so its a very LONG resort. The 2 end pools had a pool bar ( and one was closed ) The best pool was the middle one, situated by the lighthouse. It was quiet with no bar service. The lobby had a nice bar and seating, it was opened by wed evening. Lots of people smoking. The internet sucks!! It is always out of service. The beach is very long and lovely. There is a beach bar near the 12 block only, it opened around day 4. We could only change our beach towels once during our stay. The cleaning lady gave us new towels on day 4. We met many returning faithful customers and even they were disappointed with the food and lack of services. The best asset of this resort is their beautiful, friendly ,staff. Cubans are such wonderful people. We tipped lots and brought gifts. When tipping they preferred CUC's. I wish i would have changed my money over right away at a cuban bank or at the airport, and not at the resort. You get a better rate at the bank. The drinks were never the same twice. Our group never found a favourite drink. I gave up. Glasses are hand rinsed at the bar. Several of our group got sick and that lasted a day each- bring Imodium!! We all suffered from major ?mosquito bites on our lower legs, that just kept getting worse and worse. I am at home and still suffering. Wear socks/pants or brink bug repellant!! Anyways, I am sure this is a nice resort when everything is up and running. We attended some nice night entertainment. We and a lot of others were not told this resort was closed. We would have changed our dates or moved somewhere else. SunWing/Blau management did not communicate with each other and we suffered as a result. They did their best to compensate. Still does not make up for the top dollar that I paid for misleading information.
We were transferred to this hotel from the sister hotel in Varadero (our original hotel was fully book apparently) we had one night here. The hotel was less than 30% full. It looked like an old theme park. No one had done any ground care etc. We struggle to get served in any of the bars and the food was awful. Apparently this was meant to be an upgrade. But it felt more like a slap in the face. I am very disappointed with the Blau group and will not be using any of their hotels again. Very poor management all round.
Good things first: The location direct on the beach and the style of the hotel are great. Even the rooms are really stylish. However even if the hotel seems to be quiet new there are a lot of shortcomings: beginning with the rooms itsels. For example my room door was broken. I could' nt get out - even with the help of my Swiss army knife. But the hotel staff did'nt care about - even after 2 times complaining. Same with my bed where the to end was broken and fallen down (on my head...!). The service, for example with transfer booking or in the restaurant, was horrible.I went travelling 2 weeks around Cuba and every casa particular offers better service quality then Blau Marina. Not worth five stars - and the money!
