Our Opinion

A very pleasant resort in Varadero. The Blau Marina Resort is a great resort that offer luxurious amenities. Tons of food choices. The buffet items are probably the freshest of the lot. There are also plenty of a la carte restaurants as well. OK drink choices. The bars very rarely keep top-shelf items, so the drinks taste rather watered down. Great rooms that are well-maintained and cleaned regularly. The service from the team can vary. However, the majority of staff members are pleasant and attentive. There are plenty of activities offered, so you'll never have a shortage of things to do. Amazing beach location with plenty of loungers. One of the better choices to stay in Varadero.


Overview
The Blau Marina is located on a beautiful two-kilometre-long stretch of white-sand beach and turquoise waters; nature lovers will enjoy strolling the beautiful gardens throughout the hotel's spacious grounds. Located across from Marina Gaviota, the most important Sea Point in Cuba and minutes from the Punta de Hicacos Ecology Park.

Location: Directly on the beach, 35 min from the Varadero airport.

It took 6 hours before we got into our room. It was still not ready. No towels provided so that we could go to the beach or pool. Room needed updating. Used the same towels for the whole week. Buffet was over crowded and we had to wait for clean plates on a regular basis. None of the food was hot at the buffet and trays remained empty on a regular basis. Spanish and Italian restaurants were good. Pools were kept nice and clean. Nightly entertainment was high quality. As a non-smoker, I found it very offensive to be sitting in the show with people smoking during the show. The staff did what they could with what they had.

Not too impressed.

We were there for a wedding. Rooms were not available until 5pm the day of arrival...okay. Rooms were nice, clean. Never had enough towels. The beds were so hard--maybe sleeping on a box spring??? Not sure--they were low. Beverages were not replaced every day in the mini bar. Lots of mosquitos if you left the sliding door open. Some rooms had screens, some did not. You would see children with massive amounts of bites :( You need to bring bug spray--not sure what was biting when you would go to the shows at night--the first night I must have had 20 bites--they swell up and are very itchy. They had an issue with their plumbing in the main building with the washroom that was closest to the main pool (very far away). By the time the week ended it was fixed. There was no where for people to go to the washroom by the main pool. There was no way people would walk that far to the washroom even if it was working. You know that they are all going in the pool :( Our room was close by so we would go to the room each time! There was no entertainment by the pool...no volleyball (only once), no contests--nothing. Not fun for teenagers. The food was Cuba food--you would never go hungry. Breakfast was my favourite. Coffee was good in the lobby. There were people all day from early morning until night drinking at the lobby bar--not nice for young kids to see--many drunk people in the lobby! Beach was nice. The people that worked their were very nice--Carlos in the restaurant from breakfast and lunch-exceptional. The lady at the pool bar--so kind as well as the lady that made the ham and cheese sandwiches at the pool bar--very nice! A la cartes--only good one was the Spanish--the others not worth going! They were basically the same buffet food or they did not have many items that were on the menus. Overall there are many more nicer, more entertaining places to go for the same money.

good thing the weather was decant and travelled with great people.Check in was 400 pm at 600 after asking for our room keys the front desk staff told us they were waiting for clean linens because resort was out of linens we arrived an checked in at noon all afternoon more buses arrived and guest checked in and received their keys off they went to room there was about half dozen of us that was told rooms not ready. at 600 the front desk staff went to clean our room to prepare for us only because I told them I felt I was going to vomit due to a bad headache at 615 they returned and gave us a key, our room was so dirty even had blood splatters on wall next to sink bed certainly didn't have the best of linens no top bedspread as pitcures shows on site I didn't care as I felt so ill . I had assumed the maid would give us a good clean next day . she made one side of bed emptied garbage and left .... Blood still there next day I took her by the hand showed her this problem she scrubbed but our floors were so dirty we even found a cigerrete butt on floor strange as neither of us occupying the room smoked. We wrote messages on the dirty mirrors and in dust on furniture even tried leaving a good tip. Nothing worked. The food was just ok the problem with buffet was people were required to stand at kitchen door to fight the crowd for a plate and not once did I see a wet cloth with soap wash a table and to think they placed a napkin in centre of each setting and a fork and knife on each side of napkin I found that disgusting pigs eat of a cleaner surface in my opinion if you really understand how clean pigs actually are. Yes the beech was nice been to Add to dictionary 4 other times stayed at older resorts down the beech and they were much nicer not really a big deal bars were scarce one at one pool only had blau marina , beer rum/coke or sprite the wait at lobby bar was long just under staffed for amount of guest this resort needs to up their standards and staff linens dishes just more quality and care staff were not friendly because they were dealing with way to many issues all at once. Thank heavens my travel companions were great people to travel with and we made the best of it. We returned April15th and my luggage still no where to be found thanks Air Canada I'm not impressed. One more day a week will be gone by I would like my luggage.

Disappointed

Prior to holiday, I had read the reviews of this resort which were good but I was very disappointed and here are my reasons why.Reception - very slow at check in. We were told that the room was not available until 4 p.m. and when we went back at 4, were told the room was not ready. We did not get into our room until close to 5 p.m. The staff at the reception desk need to focus more on the client and other staff members should not be interrupting to solve their own problems. Perhaps more training is required.Room - good and spacious, however our family members room didn't have their beach towels so needed to ask for them. Their TV, safe and telephone didn't work however did get repaired. We had coffee mugs but no coffee machine. Our family did get a coffee machine but no filters or coffee.Resort - is huge. We were in block 23 which meant very long walks to the main building (reception and restaurants). People moving carts did not run very often although they did stop to give us a lift when passing by.Beach - is beautiful although massive. The water is lovely. Beach should be cleaned more often to get rid of cigarette butts and seaweed. Lots of places to sit so finding shade is not a problem. There is only 1 beach bar which was in the centre by the main building so not convenient at all to parts of the beach. There is only 1 place to change towels which I did not find so kept the same towel the whole week.Restaurants - Main Buffet - very difficult time getting a table and also lack of staff which led to slow clearing of the tables. Unless you got to the buffet early, great difficulty in getting a dinner plate which forced people to use saucers or bread plates for their main meal. Food was fine but often ran out and not replenished. Had to line up for a long time for grilled items or at the egg station. - A-la-Carte - Cuban Grill - food good, but again had to line up a long time for the grilled food. Had to ask for plates as they ran out. - Italian - very good - no complaints - Spanish - 2 of us had a good meal, the other 2 - the pork was not good - very fatty. - Snack Bar - Didn't have enough tables and chairs. We had to wait a long time for our meal and they didn't have full bar service - could only get beer or pop/water. Lobby Bar - very good, but the staff are very overworkedPool/Beach Bar - OK, often ran out of ingredients to make mojitos (mint) or pina coladas - so not well stockedMoney exchange - OK, but hard to get coin Staff were fairly good although for the size of the resort - very understaffedWashrooms - very often ran out of toilet paper and soap (so bring your own)WiFi - very poor - better at the marina across the street.Mosquitos - even though I took bug spray, got bitten a lot. Cuba is a Zika risk so ensure you have spray.Sunwing and other tour companies should do regular audits of this hotel as it is rated 4 star in the book. (in my opinion - it is certainly not a 4 star)Would I return to this resort - no unless major improvements are made ie: more staff

Will Never Return

I always read reviews with the opinion that they are subjective. We have been to the Caribbean 30 times. To everything from 3 – 5 star resorts. This is hands down the worst one we have ever been to. Most of the staff appears to be trying to do the best they can but this resort is so poorly managed it is a joke. We had requested a handicapped room which we did get. Issues with room. No AC all week. Gave up trying to get it fixed. No toilet seat all week. We my wife asked the customer service person. Her response was I don’t have a toilet seat at home either. Took 2 days and many trips to get working phone and towels in room. Line ups to get into the only buffet open. Ran out of plates constantly. How do you run out when the 2 other buffets were closed. Could they not bring plates from them to use. Saw very little maintenance being done around the resort. Very long lines to get any fresh food made. Finding a table and chairs in lobby at night was next to impossible. One waiter trying to serve drinks to the whole lobby by himself. One good thing about the resort was music in Lobby at night and the Al A cartes were not bad. I understand that people will says it Cuba and you have to lower you expectations but we were in a Cayo Santa Maria for 2 weeks in Jan and the resort and staff were excellent. We will never return to this resort or any resort managed by BLAU.
