Our Opinion

The Blau Resort is an amazing luxury resort for couples wanting to rest and relax in Varadero. The hotel has a great lay-out. The grounds are well-maintained and cleaned daily. Be advised and careful when it rains however, as there are large puddles that can collect around the grounds. Clean and pleasant lay out of the rooms as well. They had a variety of nightly entertainment that's often different every night. Make sure to check out the aquatic show if you can. This property boasts some of the of the best stretches of beach in the strip. The area has a tendency to get relatively busy, so make sure to get there early!

Fantastic Vacation

Stayed 5-13 Feb as a couple. Her second time, his first time in Cuba. Resort was very quiet for the first couple of days, not a lot of people around, it was very nice. Busier towards the end, but still not crowded.Very spread out, lots of beach, 4 or 5 different palapa areas. Most of them in good condition. Beautiful beach area for walking. End of the peninsula so there was not much through traffic on the beach. Food was typical Cuban, my first time here so I was worried about the food being bland and repetitive. It may have been repetitive, but it was far from bland, lots of flavour. Same as any resort in Mexico or D.R.. The staff at the buffet were always fabulous, if not a bit over worked. They were very friendly and helpful. We did the omelettes for breakfast, hot tasty eggs. Rest of the food lines were questionably cooler than I would have liked, but the food was cooked well. The grill chef for breakfast and lunch was the most cheerful man I have ever met. Ate at the Italian restaurant (fantastic), the BBQ (not so fantastic), and the Spanish restaurant (it was ok). Entertainment was repetitive, 4 of the 8 nights were the same resort staff dancing to a routine that was almost the same. The Magic night was awesome!!!Bar staff were busy, but if you went to the bar there was never a long wait. Sometimes if you stayed at your table you would wait a while for service, but as I said, the staff were busy. Drinks were typically all-inclusive style, with LOTS of rum. Some times we would order a glass of coke to cut our Cuba Libres to a more drinkable level. But mostly they were fantastic, both the service and the drinks being served. Beach bar staff and the pool bar staff were awesome.Didn't use the water sports activities, but every time we went by (except the day it was crazy windy) they had all the stuff out, and I watched people using the catamaran and the paddle boat. The ocean in this area is shallow, great for an inexperienced snorkeler as myself, where I could snorkel over the reef and still get back to a sandy area to stand up if needed. Snorkeling the one day was great, the wind had died down and the sea was calm and smooth. We did the hop on - hop off bus tour of Varadero, which had no talking and was more just a ride in to town that let you see all the other resorts on the way. Varadero is a nice older town, with lots of great shopping districts. Go off the beaten path a ways and find the public beach access, what a beautiful area, and a beautiful beach as well. Our tour of Havana was done in a private taxi, with our own tour guide. Almost the same price as the bus, except lunch was extra. We had a chance to do 4 or 5 different walking tours of the city, with our guide leading us through the alleys and side roads. She was very knowledgeable and informative, and took time to let me take photos the whole day.The room was clean, air conditioning worked, shower took a long time to get warm most days. The maid service was fantastic, we left a bag of treats for her every day and got some creative towel designs, and hand written thank you notes. The building was a bit loud, echoing hallways, etc, but we didn't spend a lot of time in the room. The grounds were well cared for, the gardening staff were always around doing clean up, with an occasional coconut cracked open for a beverage (just add rum). The beach area was raked with tractor every couple of days, quite a bit of sea weed, but its the ocean so no surprises.

Varadero Holiday

The rooms are very nice and big and located close to the beach but it can be amazingly loud at night in the hotel because the way how the doors are closing makes a hell off a noise! They have two al a carte restaurants, a Spanish and an Italian. The food served there is not really Italian or Spanish at all and you have to book them seperatly to get an table. We tried both and the food there was average. The breakfast is very good and also if you choose the buffet for dinner you get a wide selection. The gardens and the surounding of the resort a kept very well and are beautiful. What I found disappointing were the water sport activities. It was written that you can wind surf but they had only one rig which I was told is broken and the surf boards were still rapped in paper. The three days we were there the place was always closed :-( . All in all a very nice spot with some disadvantages.

Blau Marina Let Down

We travelled to Cuba and the second part of our holiday was to be at the Blau Marina, Varadero. When I say that this place would have made old Butlins look like the Ritz I am not joking. To start with how the place can be referred to as 5 star is totally baffling. We were left standing for twenty minutes before the "bellboy" who was taking our luggage on an electric buggy turned up and when we left he didn't turn up at all so I had to handle the luggage myself.. Then we discovered that it is not a hotel in the traditional sense of the word but a series of blocks of accommodation. The suite that we had ordered (the only good feature in the place) was at the extremity of the site and four flights of stairs up with no lift. My wife was suffering from a knee problem which made it very difficult for her. Having spent most of a wasted day being picked up and travelling from Havana to Varadero which was supposed to take two to two and a half hours according to information supplied by "The Holiday Place" (don't touch them they don't care about concerns) which took five hours collecting and delivering other holidaymakers, we unpacked and went to the restaurant. Now I am well aware that one mans meat is another mans poison but the food on offer was terrible and yes, I know it is Cuba, but my wife and I have travelled extensively with never a problem before. On the way to the restaurant we had to negotiate walkways which were in total darkness because all the lamps were out and broken - bulbs hanging out on bits of wire tops smashed off. The following morning while we were waiting for "The Holiday Place" rep we decided to have a look at the beach area. The beach is accessed by a board walk which was rotten and with lots of boards missing. In fact I replaced two boards that had been displaced over the side an absolute health and safety disaster area. On top of that the accommodation and surrounding areas were a mass of missing / broken / mismatched and badly repaired tiles. When the rep arrived I asked her to find us another hotel and we transferred to the Melia Marina, Varadero Resort which is a beautiful hotel and which I would recommend. However it cost me an extra £180.00 to go there and we did not have the use of a suite as we had originally ordered but it was a so much better situation. "The Holiday Place" by the way disagreed with my concerns, did not offer a refund but instead a £100.00 reduction off my next holiday with them - as if I would risk going with these people again!!!

Like a second home!

I have just returned from my fourth 7 day vacation at The Blau Marina! (First time back in two years). As always, I was greeted by name when I arrived. The staff at this resort give above and beyond to make you feel welcomed. While I found that some of my favourite staff have since left the resort, the majority are still working there. The staff here are my main reason for returning so many times. This year in particular, when the customer service lady (Kenya) notice us at check in she made sure that our entire group received upgraded ocean view rooms. The next day we come to find a complimentary bottle of rum as well as a special dinner. Since my last return the resort has undergone some renovations. The lobby bar and buffet has had a beautiful facelift. I look forward to seeing the new project in the lobby being completed. The beach here is amazing. The white sand goes on for what seems like miles. My only regret this trip was that pool #3 was closed the entire week. This was the main thing I looked forward to when I decided to return. The staff and atmosphere is best at this pool. I do understand that maybe the hotel wasn't busy enough to keep this pool open. I'm closing, this hotel is all in all amazing. I look forward to making the 5th trip next year! Kudos to all the hard working staff who make staying here such an enjoyable experience!

MEHHH

A friend of mine and I stayed here January 26th to Feb 2nd. This was my 10th time to Cuba and her second. I really love the fact that this resort is situated right across the street from the marina, because there is not an awful lot to do at this resort. I personally barely realized that there were any kind of animation staff that worked during the day! Our rooms were nice however in my friends room she could only get the bathroom and hallway lights to work and her TV remote wouldn't work. It was nice that her patio door had a screen which i wished mine had had. Our maid was ugh ok i guess, she kind of cleaned made sure i had toilet paper and fresh towels however we kind of felt like she was messing around with my friend. There was one day when she didn't have any toilet paper at all in her room! We stayed in block 18. I was kind of facinated with the lack of toilet paper and the state of some of the bathrooms, namely the bathroom by the theatre. The food at this resort is edible and thats about all i can say good about it. Don't bother with the al a cart restaurants! We only tried the Italian and was the worst meal of our week!!! My friends cannelloni was cold and I had some tiny pieces of chicken that were soggy and very unappetizing to say the least. The omelette station in the morning was fantastic though. I personally don't like runny eggs and they happily with a smile left my eggs on the grill for a few mins longer. The best food day was "Cuban" day (which you only found out about by word of mouth) I look so forward to enjoying the Cuban fare! And I have been to resorts that fully celebrate "Cuban" day with lots of decorations, fresh churros being made special mojito bars, cuban dancing. I barely knew it was Cuban day. However the biggest and best positive about this resort are the staff!!! Right from check in, the guy that was at the front desk was lovely! The wait staff here is amazing though! Every night in the buffet we would sit right to the right when you walk in the door, and we got to know Fernando who in my opinion is a very big asset to your company! He and the ladies that work in that little area are some of the most amazing people I have met! We also made it to the disco and found him there as well and the girl that is in there was amazing as well! Such super sweet people! I did find it odd that when you exchanged money at this resort, it was next to impossible to get any denomination smaller than $3. I do have to say that that did curb how i tip quite drastically!! I don't tip $3 for every drink i get while I'm at home so I'm definitely not tipping like that when it costs me $5 to get $3!!! The spa here is shady at best, we ended up going over to the Melia and had a lovely hour massage there instead. The mosquitos at this resort are out of this world!!! Now for whatever reason the cuban mosquitos find me a delicious treat, but WOW so many of them!!! I think if you put a pump in and moved some of the stagnant water by the lighthouse that might slow down the infestation. So the only real reason I would come back to this resort is to get to see some of the smiling faces that work here.
