Our Opinion
An OK resort situated within the Varadero strip. The rooms need a bit of maintenance and upgrading. However, they are cleaned and stocked daily. The food is nothing to rave about, but the resort offers plenty of choices. The resort is notable for having incredibly exceptional staff. If you have any concerns or needs, a resort team member will always be nearby to help accommodate your requests. Really great beach location. Be advised however, that bad weather conditions often lead to beach closures. Plenty of amenities available, such as a gym facility. This is an OK resort in Varadero. However, for the price you pay, it's best to go elsewhere.
Please note that hotel standards in Cuba tend to be lower than in other Sun Destinations. Unless travelers are familiar with the resort or Cuban hotels, we typically recommend that travelers book a minimum 4 star resort when traveling to Cuba.

Overview
A long time favorite of Canadians, Brisas del Caribe is set along a stunning stretch of white sand beach in fabulous Varadero. Included are a great kids' program, 24-hour lobby bar and 24-hour snack bar. The rooms in the south section of the hotel are great for families, with room for two adults and two kids. Brisas del Caribe is an excellent value beach-front hotel.

Location: Beachfront, 30 minutes from Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport, 10 minutes to downtown Varadero.

No idea why people go back! Worst holiday ever!

My husband and I stayed here Dec. 30 to Jan. 7. We too are not high maintenance, we want cleanliness, friendly staff and reasonable quality of food, service, furnishings and surroundings.We stayed at a four star last year with VIP in Holguin and were totally impressed so thought that a three and a half star would be more than adequate. This hotel provided us with our worst vacation ever!Arrived in the wee hours of the morning via Sunwing, no welcome beverage upon arrival, given a room the reeked of mold and mildew, returned immediately to the front desk, was told no other rooms available, come back at 9:30AM. At 9:30 we were told to return at 1:30 when we would be able to view a second room. The staff there seemed unconcerned, and liked to pass our concern off to other employees, making us wait and wait and wait some more. Not how you want to spend the first day of your vacation. The second room smelled cleaner, looked like it had newer bedding and drapes, but still no working safe. Why keep pawning off filthy rooms and wasting people’s vacation time to finally get an acceptable room when we have all paid good money up front?! Frustrating! The sheets were very rough and the blanket from the closet we had to use as the weather was cool was very dirty.The front desk staff were less than helpful... we were locked out of our room on our last day when as VIP were were supposed to have late access to our room until four PM. Once again not one customer service employee wanted to handle our complaint, told us we had to wait for a different staff member, we waited and we waited and we waited as many staff and guests came and went. Not how you want to spend the last day of your vacation until finally someone accepted responsibility for our situation and tried three different times to get our room card activated. We booked this hotel based on the many positive reviews it got from repeat visitors all talking about the friendly staff. Well the staff are only friendly if you tip them! And apparently ahead of time!! I am your average Canadian, I am polite, smile when I greet people, say please and thank you and believe in waiting ones turn. The staff here will barely look at you when taking your order, let alone smile. They will stop talking to you or listening to your request to give a big hello, hugs, kisses, and conduct loud conversations with other guests who must have tipped very well. They will also give the beverage they have been preparing for you to someone else who has obviously tipped well too and make you wait while they have a big conversation with this person until they start to make your order again. Wow! We went to Cuba to relax, we tip when we receive good service. I had prepared a bunch of small gifts bags of personal hygiene items to give as gifts for good service. I did not go to Cuba to spend my time trying to figure out who I had to tip, when I had to tip, how big a tip I had to give, then make sure I, not my husband, goes back to where that same employee is working and hope they remember my big tip so I can get what I have already paid money for: a basic level of polite, timely service. So many areas of fifth and lack of timely, friendly service.The placemats in the buffet look like they have never been washed, gross! Lineups for food off the grill at anytime of day were painfully long and slow and frustrating when the cooks are only using half of the three foot by three foot grill. The salad bar had very limited fresh food, most was either pickled or canned. Tip the egg guy, it will be your best meal of the day. Breads/buns were always delicious, some good meats off the grill if you waited long enough, but everything else was hit and miss. Many items were unrecognizable, lack of signs, and were cooked in heavy amounts of oil. Bring your own breakfast cereal unless you like the taste of cat litter. The barbecue by the beach that everyone raves about was painfully slow and none of the side dishes in buffet warming pans with stero flames were warm let alone hot. Many people choose to eat here as they did have a nice hot paella, but why is there not a single garbage can anywhere for people to put their dirty plastic plates and cutlery?!? The tables are left covered in dirty dishes, plastic cups, and spilled food while other guests are still trying to find a place to eat. Gross! Bring your own hand sanitizer, cutlery and napkins as we went several days without one or the other! The public washrooms are disgusting, especially the ones outside the buffet and the main pool which many of the staff use..... there aren’t even soap dispensers to run out of soap! Frequently there is no toilet paper left either! How are these employees washing their hands before going back and serving food and drinks?! Disgusting lack of of basic hygiene! Always bring your own sanitizer and toilet tissue and give some to the staff! Drinks.... if you all you want is beer or rum and coke you will be fine, otherwise you are hard pressed to find cold or frozen drinks of any quality... only had one mojito the whole week as they never had any mint, the Cuban restaurant/bar that was closest to the beach could rarely make a frozen drink (margarita or Pina Colada ) as the machine only half froze the liquids, but you had to ask for them to add liquor or you got a virgin drink, which then melted the bit of semi frozen liquid you got. They advertised that you could get Irish coffee and Bailey’s.... well on two occasions we got Irish coffees and once we got Bailey’s otherwise we were told they were out. Same for scotch. The coffee bar in the lobby, the only place to get a decent coffee, but it was so busy that the machine could never keep the water hot enough so coffee was always just warm and even after tipping staff here, service with a smile was hard to get. Since when is going on a holiday supposed to be such a struggle to find what you want, where you want it and where you have to tip huge in order to not seem like your presence is an intrusion to someone’s time. The tables by the lobby bar and coffee bar were never cleaned properly nor were the cups and glasses.... these would be swooped up off tables leaving behind all the plastics glasses, straws and garbage as there was a shortage of cups and glassware. These would be quickly rinsed under running water and stacked up to be used again before they were even dry! Not a drop of soap and as we never had hot water in our room, only a few doors away, I doubt these dishes saw any hot water either. Health risk! Hepatitis C anyone?! Specialty dinner restaurants, again, big huge warm welcomes to returning guests! Our cold receptions left us confused.... are we supposed to tip before we get service just to get a friendly smile? Very obvious when they would not take our dessert order at the same time as our meal order, but when the returning guests got seated after us, they were able to order their desserts right away.... guess which group got the highly recommended cheesecake and which group did not?! We ate at all three specialty restaurants; food was OK, beware the seafood symphony which was more like a symphony of ten octopi and all their legs! Meals were generally tastier and warmer and being able to skip the buffet made these worthwhile. The fries and hamburger at the snack bar were a disappointment, both were cold. The chicken sandwich had a grilled bun which was enjoyable.Our housekeeper was very friendly and made lovely towel animals each day (VIP) . We had beach towels in our room and didn’t bother to exchange them as we aired them out to dry and she folded them for us. The stocked mini bar that was supposed to be replenished each day was initially a hassle. The front desk staff were unwilling and unable to help and told my husband to go to guest relations. Once he was escorted there as there was no signage to find it, my husband had to wait for 15 minutes listening through clear glass walls and doors while some irate guest berated the employee. He finally gave up and thankfully our well tipped housekeeper took on the task of making sure it was restocked. The beach was great, wide, deep and beautiful sand. Beach chairs were sometimes hard to get as there was a growing stack of broken ones. We often saw guests hauling loungers from the pool area to the beach. The pools did not look clean and we only sat by them when it was too windy to be by the beach. We did not attend any shows so can’t comment on those. I left many gift bags for staff throughout the resort, but as we did not go back to the same people I guess we failed to get the improved service that one apparently has to buy ahead of time. I had one bar staff thank me for the gift I had left her the day before so I gave her another gift bag as she was genuinely grateful for my gift. Sadly, I did not give out all the gift bags I had brought with me as I became completely put off by the lack of hospitality we had received from just about everyone other than the egg guy, our housekeeper and the one bar server. The woman’s shelter here will gratefully accept the gift bags that I brought home with me. I have no yearning to return to a resort where I have to buy, ahead of time, basic friendly service or be made to feel that I am an intrusion to someone’s work day. I have no idea why so many people think that tipping like crazy to make new ‘friends’ is a holiday, I just wanted to rest, relax and enjoy.We did manage to bring home a souvenir from Cuba, we both not surprisingly came down with a gastrointestinal virus on our final day that lasted for a week. Not at all surprising given the complete and utter lack of proper cleaning methods at this resort. Go prepared with your eyes wide open!

So Disappointed & Not High Maintenance

Sadly, this hotel was a disappointment for us. Certainly some good and some bad. We were so disappointed because we often rely on reviews from Tripadvisor and the reviews for BdC have been quite positive. We are very comfortable staying in 2-3 star resorts all over Latin America and have average expectations when it comes to accommodation - clean and friendly. Really, that's it.The Good:When you are greeted by restaurant staff promptly and courteously, tip immediately. They will ensure you're well taken care of for the rest of your meals at the buffet. Good service was exceptionally hard to receive but when we did get it, we were very happy to tip well. The restaurant staff in the a la carte restaurants were amazing and even surprised our 12 year old son with birthday cake and flambe - very sweet - tipped well! The breakfast chef who wears the red striped beret - amazing. The second time I visited to order eggs, he had remembered what I had the day before and started making it before I even asked. He did this every day and we so appreciated his charming personality! Tipped well (wish I got his name!). There was an exceptional waiter who on meeting us for the first time promptly served us - tipped him immediately. He then continued to be very attentive to us and confirmed that he would save us a seat each night in his section. He was wonderful! When you get to the restaurant right at opening time, you will be excitedly greeted by the buffet restaurant team - high-5s and all that. Pretty fun.The beach is lovely. Although it's a cool time of year for Cuba and the jellyfish caused red flags every day, the sand is great, lots of chairs, no one pestering you to buy their services or souveniers, Anamacion activities on the nice days, music, volleyball, etc. Note that jellyfish are not usually so abundant, there - it's seasonal, I hear.Several pools - although the pools are not very clean, there are plenty of places around the pools to enjoy the sun.Grounds are kept neat and clean. I watched the gardener painstakingly transplant many smaller plants to improve the gardens. Also tipped - because why not?The Bad;So unclean. Older hotels are often a bit worse for wear but the cleanliness of the rooms and public washrooms here is unacceptable. Our first room upon check in - 1 king bed (there were 4 of us) and very musty smelling. We asked for another room with more beds and were promptly provided with a key and directions to find the room at 2am by ourselves....mission accomplished but disappointing. Three beds..yay! But the 2nd room entry door and patio doors did not lock (locks were missing), the safe lock was completely gone. Went back to desk to ask for a different room - was told to check back in the morning. We stayed the first night in the 2nd room and the next day were able to switch to a 3rd room with 3 beds. This room was extremely musty, mold in the tile grout and on the ceiling and a/c vent. But the doors and safe locked so we settled because we were tired of moving. The room was never completely cleaned during our stay - only to the extent of just making the beds. Bedding was never changed, floor never swept, etc. Most days there was no water bottle. No, we did not tip as the service was not good by the housekeeping team to begin with. Some days we had no toilet paper and others the water went out several times. The breezeway beside our room was mopped once the entire week. Tables in the lobby were not cleaned often enough and filthy cups, spills and flies were often left too long. Pools and pool decks are missing tiles, not clean, hot tub not functioning on south side. And lastly, the public washrooms were absolutely appaling. The washroom on the lower level beside the restaurant did not have soap 90% of the time. The garbages constantly over flowing - even a used tampon crammed into the corner of the stall that had clearly been there for a while. Upstairs lobby bathrooms - constantly smelling of filth, overflowing garbages, toilets not flushing, no soap, etc. Please note - Some PEOPLE are disgusting and the filth sould be blamed on them. However, it needs to be cleaned more often.Second bad - the attitudes of the staff. Aside from the amazing staff mentioned above and the Anamacion Team, service with a smile is hard to come by here. You may have to ask for coffee 3 times at breakfast and still not get it. You will likely see staff arguing loudly with each other infront of guests. You will rarely be greeted with a smile or even a pleasant tone of voice. Third Bad - what is VIP anyway? We purchased a South VIP Package. We were told at check in that this would provide us with a level up in service, unlimited a la carte restaurant reservations, and "more other things". Not sure what that meant. We were given white bracelets - VIP. Green bracelets for non-VIP. As you can tell from this review, the VIP upgrade is not worth it - you will get the same inadequate level of service from most staff. I'd actually like my money back for this "upgrade" which we did not receive by any stretch of the means.Now overall, we would happily overlook the condition of the hotel, the quality of the food, many exceptionally rude guests (don't even get me started on this) if it were just clean and the staff were a bit more customer service-focused. I hope that cleanliness and service aptitude can improve here - it would make the hotel so much better. We very much thank the staff who made our stay as pleasant as possible - BdC has some wonderful team members that deserve to be treated very well!

This hotel doesn’t even rate a ZERO!

Do not book this hotel! I stayed here 15 years ago, it was good and the grounds were gorgeous. It’s a total DUMP now! I booked this hotel and moved to a different one the next day. We arrived at 2am but didn’t sleep much. The first room had black mold on the walls, springs popping up in the bed and water leaks all over the ceiling. The second room was worse and much farther away. They took us there with a golf cart but wouldn’t come back to get us so we kept our clothes on and slept in the chairs. The bedding was filthy, so full of stains it looked like patterns, the bathroom had hair everywhere, dirty towels and I can’t even discribe the floors! Every room is a smoking room, yuck! In the morning we walked to the dining room but they only let a certain number of people in, there was a huge line up and appearently that’s how it’s done at this hotel. We came back later but didn’t eat, this place was terrible even by Cuban standards. They didn’t have Tea at the hotel, so couldn’t even have that. The grounds were totally unkept and the pool was so dirty. The beach lunch was pork, black beans and cabbage, no flavour. I think any good review on here is from the hotel because this place should be condemned! We found our tour rep and left to a different hotel.

Always something new each time I go!!!!!

Great PR team, upgraded from south to north, 3rd floor to 4th, great beach and food at the beach. Always making our stay comfortable and enjoyable!!!! Great people, from the beach, bars and restaurants. We will be back!!!!

Charming people and a wonderful beach!!!

Brisas del Caribe feels like our second home!Our family of four returned to Brisas again for the fourth time to celebrate Christmas 2017 together. We have always preferred Brisas del Caribe resort more than the other ones along the Varadero shores because this beautiful resort, with fancy and romantic gardens around it, has always exceeded our expectations for the following reasons:A super welcoming atmosphere:It goes without saying that all the staff members are super friendly, ready to help and accommodate us the best way they can. We met again all our old friends at Brisas, and they were truly glad to see us back for the fourth time. In particular, Glenda, the new Public Relations Manager, made us feel so calm and relaxed during our stay. Believe it or not, Glenda represents this resort very charmingly! Glenda is not only beautiful, charismatic, very energetic with endless smiles on her face, but she also provides first-class service to every guest she meets and welcomes in her office. She definitely goes the extra mile to help us, as guests, and she impressed every one of us since the first day of our arrival. Such a pleasant and professional individual she is!!! Glenda listened to us very patiently the first day we met her, and then gave us options to maximize the fulfillment of our needs and wants at this beautiful resort. Being repeated customers, Glenda upgraded us from the two rooms we had the first day 347 and 216, to a very spacious and cosy room on the fourth floor, Room 415, where we could enjoy the best ocean view from our balcony. Martha, our room maid, was perfect. She kept our room super clean, spotless, and she was so artistic with our room towels making magical swans, sea waves and heart shaped towels she left on our beds and bathroom for us to enjoy. Every time we went up and down the stairs, ( a way to exercise for those who do not want to reach the elevator), we encountered either Glenda, or Andrea, Cenin, Makel, even the other young Glenda, who assisted Glenda, the Manager, - they all made sure that we were having a fabulous time. Andrea, so elegant and stunning young lady, would tell us that “I am very happy when you, our guests, are happy and enjoy your stay in our resort!!!" So sweet she was.The connection and the excitement we experienced while being among these very friendly and hospitable staff members was tremendous. We miss all of you, our dear Cuban friends!Beach is gorgeous!A paradise beach is found in front of Brisas del Caribe, full of sunshime! Calm, clear, turquoise sea, and an endless stretch of white, soft sand gave us the sensation of being in paradise. We could easily find plenty of comfortable chairs and big umbrellas every morning, and the staff at the beach took so much care of us and our belongings every time we went for long walks along the beach. A wooden walk board, wheelchair accessible, was just finished and it stretched from the resort grounds to the white sand where we could refresh ourselves constantly. Our children (20 and 26 years old) would get endless, colourful drinks from the drink bar right on the beach; We enjoyed so much the beautiful view of this gorgeous beach full of water bicycles, kayaks and catamarans sailing in the blue waters in front of us. These water sports are free of charge for all the guests, we just needed to go ask for them. In fact, my family used the water sports every day, whereas for me, I preferred to swim in the calm, warm sea. The newly built snack bar was only steps away from the sand, and they had excellent 24/7 service for everyone who was lazy enough to take a few extra steps to reach the buffet restaurant in less than two minutes. Food is delicious!Our family have always enjoyed the food at Brisas: fresh, organic vegetables with all kinds/sorts of veggie salads, with any choice of fish, beef, pork or chicken, seafood salads - all freshly made, or we could wait only two minutes to get it directly from the grill. How delicious their exotic, freshly-cut fruits are! They had the best papaya, juicy and sweet pineapple among many other fruits: melon, watermelon, grapes, oranges, grapefruit, even green and red apples! First-class service we got particularly on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, very special, spectacular Christmas dinners. So well-organized and the food was so magically displayed!!! The staff members offered special reservations, in the two parts of the resort: North buffet dinner and South buffet dinner for Christmas. All the waiters/waitresses (Margarita, Julio, Sandy and Lianet were super dressed up, with fancy masks and superior service, and all the management staff were at their highest level of service, too! Glenda, the PR Manager, looked stunning on Christmas Eve, so classy dressed, in her apricot-pink colored dress, high-heeled shoes making sure that everything was perfectly organized and all the guests were highly respected and super served. After dinners, we always stopped either at the drink bar or coffee bar to chat with our friends, the bar tenders who amazingly remembered the order and the choices of our drinks and coffee selections. Migel, Alberto at the coffee bar would pleasantly sit down with us for a few minutes to ask how our day went so far, and surprisingly would read our minds and memorized that my husband and I liked to have cappuccino, and our son and daughter just a short espresso. Boris, Gisell, at the lobby bar, Omar and Mabel at the pool bar, and all other bar tenders worked tirelessly, with smiles on their faces they served patiently every guest. We have recommended Brisas del Caribe to many friends of ours for the superior service provided there, and my husband and I will return on February 21, 2018 for another fun week at Brisas del Caribe to escape from the harsh winter in Toronto this year.
