I have been to Cuba 6 times in all different areas, twice at this resort. Varadero is my least favorite. The food has improved in two years. The service was the same, not great. The beach is very nice. The elevator has been out of service for awhile. Eight floors and one staircase....not cool. No bell boys to help carry luggage. I felt very bad for those with mobility issues and young babies that had to be carried up all these stairs. The rooms have a lot of mould, so if you have allergies to that I do not recommend this hotel. I realize it was not a 5 star as I do not stay in those but I am a firm believer that star ratings are based on amenities not on cleanliness so there is no reason why it was not in tip top shape in that regards. Puke in a bathroom sink for 2 days has nothing to do with 2 star or 5 star. Our cleaning lady was very nice. We did the jeep excursion and it was a great day! I hope Sunwing will start advertising the lack of an elevator, so guests can book accordingly to their health conditions. We travelled with another couple and we did have a nice vacation. Fun is what you make it.
We got this all inclusive vacation for $535 each taxes in! I read the reviews and braced for the worst lol CHECK IN: A breeze. Got in around 10pm. Snack bar was open, we had some hamburgers. ROOM: clean but old roughed up decor, we didn’t care. Tv had enough channels. Big bathroom. A/C worked perfect. One bed was not the best ( Springs could be felt) we got each two pillows which were nice and full, not flat! Always hot water available. Maid came everyday to clean the room. We had a balcony and it was a nice big balcony. Not every room gets a balcony here. Only even room numbers.FOOD: It was better than I expected. Always one grilled meat at lunch or dinner. ( roast beef, pork, fish, etc..) not a huge variety like other resorts. Food you could count on seeing every meal is Spaghetti and salad , bread and ice cream. We ate off resort lots of times as my other half is picky sometimes. DRINKS: we had coffee a lot and it was great. We didn’t drink a lot. You have to buy your bottled water. 2 for 1CUC or go to the store on the street and buy there. LOCATION: Downtown Varadero calle 17 close to everything!! Overall, it was a nice stay. I would go back in a heartbeat. Nice big Lobby there too and there is a Disco on top of the building but it costs to go. The elevator was broken off and on but thankfully we were on the 2nd floor.
I will admit I did have fun while at this resort. Mostly because I had to make my own fun. I went with a close friend and we got a room on the 6th floor. We made the decision early on that we will walk downstairs everyday and take the elevator only when we want to go back upstairs. This worked most days until the elevator broke. My vacation went from being a relaxing break from work to a full workout retreat. I can safely say I didn't gain any weight while on vacation. The weather did not cooperate. It was cold and rainy. The only bad thing that happened was I am sure my friend and I were drugged the second day we were on the resort. We are seasoned travellers and know how to monitor our alcohol intake. We were both in our room by 6:30pm and I do not remember anything past playing bingo at 3:30pm. After that incident I was very vigilant about who I drank with and what I drank out of. I met some amazing people who made the vacation fun. This is the first vacation where I didn't get to swim due to the weather. Finally got weather on the very last day just hours before I had to fly out. So guess who got a sunburn just before she had to fly out. Yep, this girl. The room was okay. It was big enough and the older décor did not bother me as I am use to traveling to lower star resorts. The food was good. The staff was okay. Would I go back? Probably, but only if the price was right. The beach was loaded with jelly fish and they were all over the place. The smell got to me after awhile. The location of the hotel was good as well.
This hotel was once a very elegant place but has been allowed to slip. The maintenance once you leave the lobby was shoddy with poor paint jobs, damaged ceiling tiles, and unprofessional repairs of damage. In our room the door scraped the tile floor when opening or closing. The door had at some time been broken in, (possibly kicked in), and the damage and repair were obvious. The toilet seat was not bolted down. The outside of the windows were filthy. On the other hand the pool area was pleasant, one of the all inclusive bars was open almost always. The trip, through Sunwing, said all inclusive but some of the things you might expect to be included were not, such as use of the billiard table or ping pong table. At $1570 CAD including meals and drinks plus 2 -1day excursions, if you can put up with the problems noted, I guess it is a good value
We just returned to Canada from our week at Sunbeach hotel in Varadero. We had an amazing time. The Sunbeach Hotel has the most character of any hotel that we have stayed at in Cuba. The people were amazing. So friendly and helpful. We made so many staff member friends. You can't beat the location. Right in Varadero, steps to the beautiful beach. The rooms are fine. We are in Cuba. The food was as good if not better than any other hotel we have been to in Cuba. The bars etc are fine as well. The late night bar and grill were great. The disco was free one night and we had a ball. The one frustration was waiting in lines. The line to get something at the lobby bar or the buffet. But these lines were due to not enough staff or not enough dishes in the restaurant. Again, we are in Cuba and they are doing their best. One night we went to the Tropicana in Matanzas. It was SO much fun!The Sunbeach Hotel has a laid back atmosphere and it was a pleasure to stay there.A special thank you to everyone including Lima, Pena, Imoni,Gladys, Machuka, MIchael, Jesus, etc etc etcSee you next time!!
