Our Opinion
A budget resort in Varadero, the Aguas Azules is only for the brave and budget minded. In Cuba we highly recommend spending a bit more and upgrade to a minimum 4 star resort. It is well worth the money as 3 star resorts in Cuba can be very basic with poor service.
Overview
This enormous resort features large landscaped gardens and spacious accommodation. Near the beach is a colourful mini-market with shops and activities; active vacationers will enjoy the watersports, tennis, and use of the gym. Hotel Aguas Azules is great family value for your money - kids up to 6 years stay and eat free all year long!

Location: Beachfront, 40 km from Varadero International, 10 min to Varadero.

Good place to travel with the family

Stayed in the Bungalow section. The review focuses on the Bungalow Pool section and Amelia buffet restaurant towards the beach side of the resort. We did not stay in the Hotel area which is at the front of the resort (there is another larger pool there). If you are traveling with children, I recommend booking a bungalow through your vacation supplier (if you can). If you book a room and want to change to a bungalow once you're at the resort, they will charge you at least 17 CAC per person/per night. It is cheaper to book a bungalow right from the get-go. Pros• Quick and courteous reception/check-in/check-out• Playpen missing when we checked in, they brought a brand new one the next morning• Bartenders will gladly fill up baby bottles with warm or cold milk • Beach bartender is fast (he was always alone). Beach bar has grill for "hamburgers" and hot-dogs• Always plenty of chairs on the beach and by the pool, no matter the time of day• Late checkout available (until 4 pm) for 25 CUC. Must ask the morning of the day you checkout. • The food was good, well cooked. No one got sick but repetitious (see Cons). The pastries, bread, and desserts are awesome! • Always sufficient high chairs available at each meal. • Entertainment is good, fun and not annoying like in some other places. The kids "mini-show" was fun for the kids, but it was a little late, starting only at or after 8:30 p.m. They do make an effort to have games and activities for the kids by the pool at least twice a day. • The kid's pool is excellent. Depth is from a few inches to about a foot, with a fountain in the middle. Very clean and safe. • Exceptional staff members: Joel at evening buffet, always made sure we had our drinks and anything that was missing. Lazarinda, our maid in our bungalow, cleaned our rooms usually by the time we returned from breakfast and responded to any requests made immediately. Cons• Old rooms and buildings. Some walkways are in bad shape, dangerous to walk on at night.• Bartenders do not prepare the drinks as described on menus. Drinks are often watered down.• Servers do not give coffee/juice in the morning— you have to get your own.• No milk or juice available at the buffet at supper time. We asked, but were told they were only available at breakfast. • Towel hut is open 9 to 12 and from 1 to 5, but they usually run out of towels by 10 am. This wouldn't be a huge deal normally because we'd just hang our towels out the night before. However, we were on the ground level of our bungalow with a balcony without railing. Therefore, when we hung our towels out, they were just sitting on chairs for anyone to take, which happened the last day we were there! Had we been able to exchange our towels at any time, we wouldn't have had to hang them outside. • No phone or clocks in our room. • Food is repetitious, even by Cuban standards. With the exception of a few items, the offerings at the buffet were pretty much the same for every breakfast/lunch/dinner. • Tables at the buffet are often not cleaned or set. One morning I dared to find some cutlery at the server's station and was yelled at and told to wait. No one ever came to serve us or set our table. We had to wait 10-15 minutes before the dishes were done and then still had to go ask the server for some utensils. • Music from different areas of the resort (main building bar, theater, beach) is extremely loud and can be heard well past 1 in the morning some nights. We always had adequate water pressure, but keep in mind, the water never gets really hot. There are stickers in the bathroom that say it only heats up to 50 degrees. The overall resort was clean, beautiful, if a little out-of-date, and the staff was always polite. There are plenty of cats outside the buffet, but they looked very well-kept, clean and were kind. We had no major issues and this resort is good for the price. I expected less from a 3.5 star and was pleasantly surprised.

Awesome time at Starfish Veradero

I stayed in the Garden View rooms with my husband and 2 teenage girls. My sister stayed in a room beside us. Our room was freshly painted and spacious with 3 beds, clean sheets and bedspreads with an extra heavy blanket in the closet. The double beds were comfortable as well as the pillows. Our room had a mini fridge and a hairdryer in the bathroom as well as 3 110 volt pug ins under the t.v. that we could all plug our phones in to. We also had hot water in the shower. But I would suggest only using the hot water tap as there is a posted sign above the tub stating it is only 50 degrees so it does not get real hot but is fine for a nice shower. Our maid service was excellent. Our room was always tidied and clean towels and toilet paper topped up as well as 2 large bottles of water a day. There were 2 pools at the resort and they always had something going on example exercising, bingo, etc. There was also a hot tub which was closed for renovations our whole stay. The Buffet food was plentiful and varied day to day. Some days were Italian, , turkey Dinner, Hot Dogs and fries, Roasted Pig. Even my picky teens enjoyed it. They also had a few snack bars to eat at which served french fries and club sandwiches. There were plenty of bars with good service. Some of the staff though had limited English but were always pleasant. The Entertainment was great. There was singing in the lobby, dance shows, beach parties, live Bands, free paddle boats, and free sailing at the beach. The beach was great with lots of chairs. The Internet was slow but they offered cheap cards that you could purchase at the lobby. The staff went above and beyond to help make our stay a great one. We particularly liked Marbella, Alehandro Martin and Denny, Ray, Babaro, Paheuea and Lorenzo. :)For a 3 Star Resort, we were very impressed and will definitely be back again.

Week in the Sun

My wife and I spent a week at the Starfish, I have been to Cuba twice in the past (once in Cayo Coco and once in Holguin)The Starfish certainly needs some TLC and from what we could tell it is happening but on a Southern Carribean pace. Staff for the most part are helpful but what they need is constant supervision (especially maintenance and ground staff). We found the previous reviews to be helpful and we strongly suggest when booking to book the Bungalows right away, much cleaner and close to everything. Food in buffet was ok, and could easily be warmed up on grill. Snack Bar was good and funny at times, ask for chicken 3 days and received it 3 times different (Grilled breaded and fried). Snack bar was best for lunch.Ala Carts were good and Italian Pizza one as I have found in Cuba is always best.

Beautiful beach but honestly the food variety was the great

Food was very poor variety. The food was the same every day unbelievable. The sunwing representative very disrespectful , did not do nothing for us. The shows were good. Ice cream machine broke, toster machine broke. The entertainer were great. The management does not have good communication. We wait an hour for wait to get hot dog in the outside . Wait an hour for change beach towels. We will not be back. Drunk people bothering in the room hallway making laud noises every night. Anyway it really could be a great hotel but needs serious changes.

Great time had by all!

First time at this hotel and at a three star resort but very pleased with our choice. Wendy from the hotel customer relations and Nelly our Sunwing representative were very pleasant and helpful in ensuring that we had our needs met. We travelled with kids and elderly and they have taken our request seriously and followed up with us in a timely manner - thank you very much to both of you and the entire team for looking after us; we truly appreciate it.While we were there you could see that they are working on improving the grounds, updating, fixing, painting where necessary...the gardens were well maintained, the room that we stayed in was painted with some newer furniture and mattresses, the washroom was functional with hot water at all times. The pool area was maintained very well with plenty of activities for the adults and kids, the staff were very friendly at all times. I really enjoyed the fact that there were multiple choices for entertainment every day catering to the diversity of the guests - young travelers, families and older travelers. The food was great, really enjoyed the stews and soups while the kids enjoyed the grilled fish and pasta bar.We also visited Havana, tour arranged by Rocky our bellboy and were very pleased. Glenda our tour guide was amazing, very knowledgeable, friendly and she made sure we had great time. I highly recommend her.....I would really recommend this hotel to anyone who is realistic about Cuba vacation expectations and is looking for a great vacation at a great price
