Hotel Aguas Azules
- What's Included
- All Inclusive Features
Our OpinionA budget resort in Varadero, the Aguas Azules is only for the brave and budget minded. In Cuba we highly recommend spending a bit more and upgrade to a minimum 4 star resort. It is well worth the money as 3 star resorts in Cuba can be very basic with poor service.
Location: Beachfront, 40 km from Varadero International, 10 min to Varadero.
First of all we had read reviews on starfish and thought we were staying downtown... so it was quite a surprise to find out there was two hotels called starfish!! Starfish varadero is way down the strip, about a 15 minute drive to the central market and bars. We took a car one time and the bus another. The hotel grounds are well kept!! It's a big property lots of walking. The beach was beautiful but we didn't spend a lot of time there as it rained and was really cold. The food is the same as anywhere in Cuba, not what I go there for haha. There were a few ladies at the reception who were super rude but I don't wanna speak for all of them. At check in she wrote our room number down that was it. No one to help with our bags and we spent a good 20 mins dragging luggage around at 2 am looking for it. there was no elevator on our side 2400 block so we had to lug it up a lot of flights of stairs. We didn't think our lights worked they failed to mention put your room key in the slot. The shower only had cold water all week and I never got to rinse my hair fully. There's only one outlet where they plug the tv in and my blow dryer almost caught fire so use the one in the bathroom unless you have a converter. The main pool was awesome spent most our time there. Hour plus wait on food at the snack bars so order way before you are hungry. FYI they put mayo on the ham and cheese sandwich there so if you don't like it make sure to say it!! Great entertainment!!! I would go back it's a great resort :)
We had a fabulous time at the Starfish. Food was great. Bungalows are nicer then the rooms. We had a room. It was not fancy but had everything we needed. Lots of entertainment here. Special guest musicians every night. Beach is amazing. 2 pool sections - both great. Lots of options for eating. Grill by the pool is best for lunch. All the staff was wonderful. We all felt welcomed and spoiled. Best things for us was the ice cream available everywhere. Ginger ale at the piano bar and the fish at the poolside grill. (Actually - everything at the grill was great). Coffee is great at the piano bar. Cappachinos with Rum Cream - to die for!!!! I cannot understand why anyone would complain. The only improvement I could suggest is to improve ice delivery to the quiet pool bar. Nobody wants warm drinks. The other bars all had ice. The cool showers were a common complaint we heard. It did not bother us that much. It is a reality in Cuba. We get it. Thanks to the Starfish for a great week.
I stayed by the pool mainly by the gym where it was less busy and had very few little children. The music was great and there were always activities going on like Aquafit, dance lessons, mini golf and Spanish lessons. I will definitely be in touch with a few of the staff on the Entertainment Team. They were always happy to see me. The two a la cartes we selected were extremely delicious. We had Pizza Pasta one night and Seafood another night. Food was hot and pasta was thoroughly cooked. Never had an issue with enough toilet paper in the hotel room but I also recommend taking a roll of toilet paper with you wherever you go once you leave your room. Cleaning staff for our room was thorough and super friendly. We were in room 2108. Few minor issues in our room. Never had hot water. But being as it was hot out for me I wasn't overly upset about that. Only thing we did off the resort was go shopping in Downtown Varadero. Took the double decker bus and met alot of the locals. They are always happy to see Canadians.Definitely go back to this resort because of the staff and mainly the Entertainment Team.
We have been to Cuba before and had a great time. My wife and I decided to take a 5 day Cuba vacation to Starfish Varadero and were not disappointed. The staff were awesome and very friendly and the food was hot and the drinks were cold. We stayed from Jan 12 - 17th and decided on a bungalow for the small additional upgrade fee. It was well worth it as we were super close to the buffet, all the A-la-carte restaurants, the pool and the beach. We would most definitely come to the Starfish again!
I cannot say enough about the staff. All staff were friendly right down to the gardeners. We loved Betty our chambermaid,I feel sorry for others that are not comfortable with affection in Hispanic countries and especially the tender affections of Cubans. Engaging anyone was met with a big smile, a warm embrace and kissing of the cheeks.Met many great characters in the cafeteria but one barmaid by the pool really got me laughing when I asked how long my club sandwich would be said in a seriousface "3 hours" she was really a character and enjoyed watching her work and engaging others. All the managers we met were great but my wife and I were especially taken withSunwing Representives Yvonne and Nelly. Besides enjoying them as great peoplewe got so much good advice and recommendations from them. We both really respected them greatly watching them deal with people that had complaints we felt were often unmerited and beyond their control. We saw them often go way beyond their call of duty. We both loved the food and appreciated the many chefs efforts. Some of the sauces had us looking for more the next day.The choices were always overwhelming.I especially liked the various beef dishes. We spent too much time at the 24 hour Cuban bar having expressos, capiccuanos and cortardos. The alcohol drinks were great too epecially daquerias and Cuba libres. The beach was outstanding and as I remembered it 30 years ago. This is a 3 star hotel and I feel once they finish renovating will easily gain a star or 2.The people but especially the people at this hotel were what really made our trip.Me amour va contego
