Our Opinion
A budget resort in Varadero, the Aguas Azules is only for the brave and budget minded. In Cuba we highly recommend spending a bit more and upgrade to a minimum 4 star resort. It is well worth the money as 3 star resorts in Cuba can be very basic with poor service.
Overview
This enormous resort features large landscaped gardens and spacious accommodation. Near the beach is a colourful mini-market with shops and activities; active vacationers will enjoy the watersports, tennis, and use of the gym. Hotel Aguas Azules is great family value for your money - kids up to 6 years stay and eat free all year long!

Location: Beachfront, 40 km from Varadero International, 10 min to Varadero.

Great resort, everything you need

I stayed at this resort from Nov 14 to Nov 21, 2016. I travelled solo this time. This is my 6th time to Cuba. The last trip to Cuba, I stayed at Kawama but found this resort to be much better. There were not many Canadians at this resort in November, mostly Russian tourists. Upon arrival, I was upgraded to a bungalow which was very nice and spacious. Came with a large room with fridge, table, 2 couches, and the next room was the bathroom area and then 2 double beds with a balcony. Room - A 2505. Room was clean, comfortable and had a great AC unit. Great location and was central to everything at the resort. Close to the disco, pool, beach. I did find a dead cockroach on my balcony but figured they had just sprayed. A few days later I went to the washroom and did see a cockroach running across the floor but this is Cuba and is common and have seen it at every resort. The patio chairs on the balcony were brand new and comfortable. Beach: The beach is great and clean. Lot's of chairs and shade and the bar is close by. Was nice not to be hassled by people selling stuff on the beach. Bars: I went in Nov. so it was a slow season. The lobby bar was open at night and live entertainment near the lobby. Shows: The nightly show started at 21:30 and went to 22:00. Great shows and dances. Afterwards, the disco bar was open. Disco was always dead and only about a dozen or so people at night. Mostly Russian women looking to pick up the local dancers. Staff: Very friendly and accommodating. Was very pleased. INTERNET / WIF: You can purchase a 1hour wifi card at the front desk for $2 CUC. After you are finished on your device, MAKE SURE YOU GO TO YOUR BROWSER and type 1.1.1.1 - This will log you off your session. I don't know how many cards I went through until someone told me this trick. The staff do not tell you that when you purchase the card. Downtown: Took a taxi at night to Calle 62 and it was $20 CUC there and was $15 CUC on the ride back. 15 CUC is about the average going price... anything more than 20 CUC is a rip off! Food: Food was decent and always something to eat. Cuba is not known for gourmet cooking but they had very good ribs, chicken, pasta, pork, etc. Breakfast is good with a large selection of breads, fruit (not great fruit) and eggs, omelettes. Beer tap in dining area and you can help yourself. Tip: Save your water bottle from the room and fill it up in the kitchen or at the bar area... will save you CUC instead of buying a 1.5liter bottle everyday. Massage: I strained my neck while at my gym at home. Went to the gym at the resort and strained my neck again... I then went to get a massage and the massage was great. Afterwards, she told me that my neck and shoulder was very stiff and that I should stretch more. I didn't tell her that I had a sore neck prior to the massage. The 30 min massage was 15 CUC. TIP: Bring a stainless steel mug with you. It is better than the small plastic cups they give you and keeps your drinks colder, longer. I've stayed at 5 star, 4 star, 3.5 star and 3 star resorts in Cuba. For the price I paid, I was very happy with what I got and was great service. I will definitely be back to this resort and they don't charge a single supplement fee.

Nice resort

Just came back from a week at aguas azules, now called starfish.Liked the resort very much.Stayed in a bungalow, highly recommended. All rooms(bungalow )have a separate living room with a pullout couch. The beach was amazing. The only negative would be the foodThe selection was VERY limited.Staff were nice. Rosalita was excellent at cleaning our room.Would definitely return to this resort.Thank you

Now the Starfish Varadero

We arrived the first week of the new management, and could see that they are already making (cosmetic) improvements. The food was good, Cuban Day was great fun, and the beach really is the nicest I've ever been to. The staff is exceptional, really great friendly service at all the restaurants and bars. The resort itself is a bit older, but the service and location really are worth the cost. Great value.

surprising for a 3.5 stars

We were very surprised by many things: variety and good taste at the buffet, plentu of choices at a la carte restaurants, excellent service... And the beach is simply beautiful. The only thing that doesn't make it perfest are the drinks" The frozen drinks are made of powder, but they often taste water, especially at the snack bar. We got a bungalow and were very happy about it!

Hotel Aquas Azules now Starfish Varadero

We stayed at this resort in May 2016 for 8 nights. We had no hesitation to return in late October for another 8 night stay. We have previously stayed at three other properties in Varadero. This property is our favorite. The resort is a nice size. It is easy walks to and from the hotel, restaurants, beach, pools, nightly entertainment and the main road to catch the double decker sight seeing bus. All the staff are very friendly and provide excellent service. Special thanks to Jahima at reception and Alex (Director). John and LeonaCanada
