Our Opinion
A really great resort. The hotel is run by incredibly attentive staff, who ensure that you're getting the most out of your stay. The rooms are well-maintained and modern. The only issue that's been reported by guests, include trying to operating the air conditioning. OK buffet and a la carte choices to choose from. There are other resorts that offer better choices, so if you're looking for a resort that is known for their food, it's best to look elsewhere. There aren't any alarming issues with the food however. Much like other Varadero resorts, the beach is the best element of the hotel.
With its unique architecture, Mercure Playa de Oro is surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens and is just minutes from the town of Varadero and next door to the Dolphinarium. Beach lovers will enjoy the great location right on Varadero Beach, while golfers can tee up at the nearby 18-hole championship golf course. Couples, singles and families alike enjoy the four-star value, the outdoor dining with spectacular ocean views, and the variety of activities - including salsa lessons and Cuban culture courses.

Location: Beachfront, 35 minutes from Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport, 10 minutes to downtown Varadero.

Another great vacation October 7th 2016

Have been back to this resort a number of times. There has been upgrades since last year. Flat screen TV's in the rooms, and WIFI in the lobby.Again, this resort has the most friendliest people, and the beach is spectacular.I would recommend this resort to anyone looking for an affordable vacation.

Great vacation, amazing staff!

We have been in Varadero 9 times ,but it was first time in Mercure Playa de Oro. We liked this resort very much and the staff was great. Big THANK YOU to NADIESCHA and JEAN -LUC GROSSIN. If everything goes well we will see you in April 2017. Margaret and Krystof from Montreal.

The one star is for the beach, NOT for the Resort!

What a horrible place. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to write the review to stop any decent traveler from stopping in this place. Definitely not for families, couples, clean people etc. The service? What service? It's HORRIBLE! Even in breakfast the table cloths were wet and dirty from spills from previous guests. I asked if they could please change the table cloth and clean the table. They said no, they didn;t have more, just find some place else to sit. No one brings you anything, no beach service, food was disgusting! The activities host was drunk, the bar is full of prostitutes!!!! The rooms, are stingy and when we went to bed their were 4 roaches in the room. Went to front desk and they changed roon but, explained you are on the beach so they are inevitable. WHAT A DUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a flight to catch in the morning. They will never see me or anyone I know if this DUMP! Thank God for the beach or they would have no guests. Not I know what 184 CUC buys in VAradero, Ahhhh and the drinks, OMG, DRINK BEER, ALl other drinks are worthless. I would hope someone reads this and my time spent here is worth saving someone from staying in this disgraceful place they call a resort. Shame on them!

Buildings Not Suitable to Occupy

The first 30 seconds resulted in a horrible experience with the guest services staff. The 2 ladies working the desk that evening had to be the most miserable people I have ever met. The rooms were in a very run down condition. The first room they gave us I could barely pry the door open. I had to use my shoulder to close it and lock the door. The Bathroom door couldn't be closed at all. Lights worked partially, and the TV had horrible reception. Then there was the bare wires hanging out of the receptacle. Not good with 220v wiring! We asked to be moved the next morning. This building had numerous water leaks coming down from the ceilings in the hallway and on one floor the hallway ceilings were complete ripped out or fallen down. The entire building smelled like mildew or mold. Our new room had a strong bleach smell to it. One morning they forgot to put the top sheets on the bed. When I asked at the front desk I was told well the cleaning ladies have left, "what do you want me to do about it?". Do you really need the sheets? Twice in the buffet they tried to serve my wife raw pork. I can understand worn and tired facilities for the value traveler, but this is plain gross negligence, and the addition of nasty staff makes this resort unfit.

Fabulous beach & grounds! Buildings need work.

My family and I stayed here for a one week all inclusive during mid September. Buildings/rooms: The buildings are in dire need of renovations, upgrades and TLC. They are very old, run down and in a state of disrepair. We were given a room with an extra bed ( for our young son) and the sheets were filthy, we had ants on our bed, the bedside carpets looks like they hadn't ever been cleaned and our balcony door was extremely difficult to open (so much so that only my husband could open it :(Beach: With the above being said the beach is absolutely breathtaking! Beautiful white sand & turquoise water to die for! With the help of the wonderful staff on the beach we were lucky to have had always found an umbrella and the water was incredible! We even took a mini- catamaran ride & it was lots of fun!Pool: Awesome! The area around the pool & the pool itself was kept very clean, well maintained & very enjoyable. Animation/ Entertainment: I've visited several hotels in Varadero and the Animation team was amazing!. Several activities & games were played throughout the day ( on the beach, around the pool, in the pool, etc.). They had an evening show every night that we very much looked forward to.Food: The food here was good. It wasn't "tasteless", as many claim, and there was something for everyone. Of course, it wasn't 5 star cuisine but it was good nonetheless. All in all, I think the hotel could very well be rated higher stars if not for the shabby unkept buildings. You do get what you pay for. It's really too bad that solely due to the state of the buildings and the condition of our room I don't think I'd go back.
