Our Opinion
A really great resort. The hotel is run by incredibly attentive staff, who ensure that you're getting the most out of your stay. The rooms are well-maintained and modern. The only issue that's been reported by guests, include trying to operating the air conditioning. OK buffet and a la carte choices to choose from. There are other resorts that offer better choices, so if you're looking for a resort that is known for their food, it's best to look elsewhere. There aren't any alarming issues with the food however. Much like other Varadero resorts, the beach is the best element of the hotel.
Overview
With its unique architecture, Mercure Playa de Oro is surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens and is just minutes from the town of Varadero and next door to the Dolphinarium. Beach lovers will enjoy the great location right on Varadero Beach, while golfers can tee up at the nearby 18-hole championship golf course. Couples, singles and families alike enjoy the four-star value, the outdoor dining with spectacular ocean views, and the variety of activities - including salsa lessons and Cuban culture courses.

Location: Beachfront, 35 minutes from Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport, 10 minutes to downtown Varadero.

A place that makes memories ...

My compliments to all the hardworking staff at this resort ... so obliging ... was travelling on my own with group of 9 family and friends ... a slight mixup on arrival and was put into a different building from everyone else ... spoke to front desk staff and ended up in a 2 storey suite complete with huge Jacuzzi ... kingsize bedroom and 2 single beds on the main floor ... it was beautiful and the housekeeper (Mylana) was so gracious and worked very hard ... no problem with towels (well stocked) toilet paper and even got Kleenex ... BUT the food was gross and I don't consider myself a fussy eater ... next time I would bring things like spices, peanut butter/jam and condiments .. the beach barbque was OK but the buffet NOT ... did go to the fancy restaurant on the resort and it was really good ... how can 2 restaurants on the same resort be so different ... I highly recommend this resort ... it is so clean ...

For the non picky traveler

For some odd reason, I look forward to returning here. Like others have said, "DON'T ACCEPT A ROOM ON THE FIRST FLOOR"!!!! That's what I got, first floor...smelled terrible, moldy, so gross. I don't think higher floors would be much better, still will have some sort of disgusting growth on the lamp shades and chairs, but will most likely smell better than what I encountered. I did try to change my room, but for a few days the front desk staff were NOT helpful, did not care, kept saying to check back the next morning. This place is great, lovely pool, beach, but if you have any issues, don't expect any staff to really care. Otherwise, super low key, casual place. I'm shocked they don't upgrade their rooms, as the rest of the resort is beautiful. The manager seems to really care, he's commented on tons of these reviews, so if you have any issues, find him, I saw him wondering around the resort everyday. I think he'd be more than happy to help you out. Food is horrendously bad, but it's Cuba, entertainment was great. Pool was lovely, and they mix the best drinks!

The best vacation for family!

We passed 10 days in Mercure Playa de Oro. It's wonderful place with nice green garden and colorful flowers, fruits( bananas, coconut, goyave) also tropical birds and colibri. One of the best beach in the world with a white sand and clear water. Nice and clean hotel, the room was very good cleaned all the time when we came back from the beach my kids discovering the nice surprises on the beds. Thank you so much to the general manager Mr. Jean Luc for attention to the ours family for help to organize birthdays cake for our daughter Jasmine. The service in restaurants was very good .all staff is smily and gentil and jokes. The food was tasty and fresh with varieties for any taste! We eat a very tasty lobster at the restaurant Varadero(international food) ,it was big and great portion with sauce inside and perfectly cooked on the fire., you can order it at the reception and they will prepare it for you .There was a professional live cuban music in the lobby in the buffet, restaurants and on the beach for the lunch time ,we filled so good even dance on excellent cuban music. The musicians played"Besa me mucho", " bailando"et others. Every day was varieties of activity with the group, classes of dance, classes of spanish, yoga on the beach and others...And everything is very close. They have a kids club: great ideas for young travelers, we found toys for the beach and did the great castle. Every evening the great spectacles, magic with exotic animals, professional artists. This propriety is very good managed and entertained.Be sure you will see general manager every day on the property to control and survey all activities .We really love being in the Mercury Playa de Oro and we planing to come back with the friends as soon as possible.

Staff at the Coffee Bar were amazing

Really happy with this resort. Third visit to Cuba and this resort was very clean.....friendly and the food was not too bad. My only complaint was the bar staff. We found that they were not as friendly as the rest of the resort and their smiles seemed to be absent. BUT it was a great resort to stay at. Met some great people..(with the same complaint).....International a la carte was fantastic. Coffee bar with Alexis and Yanet.... couldn't get enough of their smiles and friendly service. I miss them already. If you chose to stay at a resort... this is the one
