A good budget option for Varadero packages, however, travellers should keep in mind that anything under 4 stars in Cuba can be quite basic. The beach here is very nice but the food and room options are minimal and value based. If you are just looking for cheap getaway, then this hotel might suffice. If you want a quality vacation in Varadero, go for a minimum 4 stars. A couple of good, well priced recommendations are the Memories Varadero, Riu Varadero and Iberostar Tainos.
The red tile roof, white-walled courtyard and tropical gardens give this hotel a Spanish-Colonial ambiance which provides a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere for families and couples alike. The Starfish Cuatro Palmas is centrally located downtown, close to shopping, restaurants and bars. The Las Palmas section of the hotel is located across the street from the Cuatro Palmas section of this property.
Location: Downtown, approximately 30 minutes from the Varadero airport.
We are a couple in our 50’s who travel for long walkable beaches, a comfortable bed, and good food. We particularly enjoy the beautiful Varadero beach. We never travel anywhere without checking TripAdvisor first, so that’s why I contribute. This is about our 10th trip to Cuba, and our first stay at the Quatro Palmas, and it won’t be our last! Room: I hear that the rooms in the beach-side colonial section are not renovated, but can’t say for sure because we didn’t stay in that section. We stayed in the Las Palmas building 2, across the street. We learned that they are actually two separate hotels that have an arrangement for accommodation and amenities, except not when it comes to food (see below). It’s a short walk to the spectacular beach through the main hotel, but you have to be careful when crossing the busy main street. Our room was quiet (facing the inner courtyard), and freshly renovated. Unfortunately, it didn’t have any drawers or a place to hang our clothes, so we lived out of our suitcases. They’re working on it; they need to get a custom-length clothes rod made for our room. Bathroom very small, but functional. Always had hot water. Best mattress we have EVER had in Cuba, new and comfortable; nothing short of a miracle. Food: There is a continental breakfast bar in the Palmas building, but we didn’t have access to it because of the separate hotel factor. Bit of a shame, because it would have come in handy to get a quick bite in our building a couple of mornings. Buffet food in the main hotel was tasty and hot, good variety. Love the pasta bar! Real parmesan almost every day. Didn’t try the à-la-carte restaurants, but we heard the Cuban was good. They should do more romantic lighting at the Italian by the beach though. They are missing some of the classic hard liquor choices at the bar that some people might expect, but that’s not surprising for a three star and we’re not big drinkers, so no big deal for us. Canucks, bring your own Clamato if you want a Caesar.Activities: We don’t do the late-night outings or daily animation activities, so can’t really comment on those. Very good early-evening entertainment in the lobby bar; nice touch! Sometimes they come into the dining room to sing and dance, and that is fun. Gym could use refreshing (new tile flooring and a coat of paint would go a long way) but it has the basics and it’s air-conditioned. Super easy to go out shopping because you’re right in town. Our favourite is the Artesenia market on the corner of 22nd street. We did the jeep safari excursion and loved it; a lot of bang for your buck. Wifi was spotty, but that’s just Cuba. The beach is amazing. You can walk all day and then some.Overall: This hotel is comfortable and clean, with very good food and a friendly ambiance. I understand that this hotel is exclusive to Sunwing for Canadian travelers. Lucky us! Thanks to manager David Villar Alonso for his genuine friendliness and eagle-eye attention to detail; it’s sure paying off. All-in-all, we simply LOVE this hotel. It’s GREAT VALUE for the money and we hope to go back soon and often!
I stayed at the Starfish Cuatro Palmas from February 5th to February 12th, 2017. It was my first time in Cuba but certainly will not be my last time in this gem of a resort. First things first, location! Beach front and walking distance to lots of places to shop, restaurants and two awesome bars (The Beatles Bar and Calle something). The staff are awesome, very friendly and helpful. I especially enjoyed the day and evening entertainment. So much fun! A big thank you to Carlito and Randy for the dancing lessons, bingo and all the other day entertainment. The food was also so much better than I expected, and everything I had was delicious. Lots of variety and you choose your type of meat and have it cooked to order. The room was very basic but clean and functional. Absolutely loved my stay and was hoping to go back in first or second week of April but no rooms are available in the main resort.....😐.
We have just came back from our fourteen-day-stay in this hotel, which was really unforgettable. The important thing that you have to keep in mind is (and many travellers already mentioned this), that Cuba is a very special destination and you probably go there to feel the difference. Therefore please don´t expect the European standard of service (especially maintenance!)...just accept that it´s different here...and you will have a great time. The staff are nice and friendly in general...of course, tipping them is "a must", however, it is a very important part of their salary. The resort itself is very well constructed, not big, which is an advantage, because the place is not overcrowded. The location is simply perfect - walking distance to the centre of Varadero, so you can have a nice evening walk whenever you want...the place is absolutely safe. And the beach...definitely one of the best we have ever been to. There are quite enough sun umbrellas, maybe more sunbeds would be fine. Somebody mentioned reserving the places here...but it depends on the current mix of guests...we have experienced both...vacant sunbeds around 10 a.m. and also full beach at 8. We had a room with an ocean view and I can recommend it - it´s quite quiet.Evening shows...not our cup of tea, but many people liked them. If you don´t like loud music, you can just escape to a bar close to the beach and enjoy the evening there. The buffet restaurant is very well and offers wide selection of food, I did not even expect that.A-la-carte restaurants: the Italian one is not worth visiting - quality of food less than average and service is really poor. But go to the Cuba restaurant, the meals are tasty ans staff nice. We did not have any problems booking the space in the restaurants, the system is good. And finally a tip: Go to Havana to experience the real Cuba, because Varadero is just a place for perfect holidays. Rent a car (which is not easy, because there are not enough cars and you have to rent it for a minimum of 3 days) and go on your own. You will see more of reality, than tour guides show you...and this is probably why you go to Cuba.
sorry for the delay in writing this review but it seems you have to wait three months before you can write another review. was there jan.20 to the 27th and once again had an excellent time. it was nice to see all the staff and david the general manager. they always treat us like family. the food was great and our room had a great view of the pool and ocean. we cant wait till june to return but this time for 2 weeks because 1week at the starfish cuatro palmas is never enough. cant wait to get back in 95 days and counting.see yousandy and larry walsh
There is a definite humidity problem in rooms at this resort. We were placed in the newly renovated rooms across the street, upon entering our room, there was a significant humid smell, so reception agreed to move us to another room. However the other room, had same issue, so for those with allergies, I would beware. I had sinus problems my whole trip, sneezing and throat closing up each night, so had to be on advil every night in order to fall asleep. The food has no taste, so even if you do eat, you will still be hungry, luckily I brought snacks with me and green energy powder to compensate for lack of fresh fruit and veggies in Cuba.
