Starfish Cuatro Palmas

A good budget option for Varadero packages, however, travellers should keep in mind that anything under 4 stars in Cuba can be quite basic. The beach here is very nice but the food and room options are minimal and value based. If you are just looking for cheap getaway, then this hotel might suffice. If you want a quality vacation in Varadero, go for a minimum 4 stars. A couple of good, well priced recommendations are the Memories Varadero, Riu Varadero and Iberostar Tainos.
The red tile roof, white-walled courtyard and tropical gardens give this hotel a Spanish-Colonial ambiance which provides a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere for families and couples alike. The Starfish Cuatro Palmas is centrally located downtown, close to shopping, restaurants and bars. The Las Palmas section of the hotel is located across the street from the Cuatro Palmas section of this property.
Location: Downtown, approximately 30 minutes from the Varadero airport.
At the end of a longish trip around Cuba, if you're like me you like to relax and laze around for a bit. We did that at the Cuatro Palmas in VaraderoThis is an all-inclusive resort that involves the normal small cups for drinks, and some interesting food choices - although the variety here was definitely more than elsewhere. But staff were generally helpful and attentive. However, the thing that really stands this place apart is the beach. Simply outstanding and amazing; I can't really do it justice.
Visited this hotel in June. We requested a ground floor room, close to pool area and away from street noise as there is a late night bar across the street. It took forever for us to get our room but they accommodated our requests completely. We were on a 6 am flight, arrived at 12 pm, took a $20 taxi to hotel instead of the bus transfer but we could not get our room until 4pm. It was raining heavily so we couldn't even sit by the pool. A long day for sure! The hotel has rooms across the street called Eco Palmas section which we originally booked in error and then changed. The Colonial rooms are apart from the main building but are newly renovated. Our room was in the main building, close to everything.Room was older but clean and comfortable. Bed was comfy, pillows ok, air con worked great, hot water, fridge in the room, beach towels left in the room. The hotel is right on the beach, literally. Beach was lovely as usual. Pools were clean. Lots of sun chairs available. Staff were friendly. Front desk was efficient. Currency exchange available. David the Manager was always seen on and around the property. The buffet was as expected for Cuba, food was not hot though even when we were first in for lunch. Breakfast is good, can't go wrong with the egg station. There is a great little beach front alacarte restaurant on the property. You can book a dinner there. It is open for lunch everyday and has set menu, the Cuban sandwiches were great. The fish is whole fish so if you don't like bones, don't order this. The lobby bar is a nice evening hangout, live music and friendly staff. We love this location because it is right in the middle of town. There are restaurants with great lobster specials in town that you can walk to if you feel like a change from resort food. There are lots of little market stalls and a big park close by. It is very safe to walk around in town day or night . Love this place and recommend it!
great hotel and staff.ready to go back :) was damage done to the hotel ? i am planning on going back in 2 weeks,i hope that there was no damage and every on is safe.thank you for the great food ,beach ,and pepole that work there.
I travelled to Varadero with 3 friends from August 29 - September 5, 2017. This was my third visit but their first therefore I reminded them of a motto to keep in mind before arriving: no expectations = no disappointments. Having only stayed at resorts far from town in the past, I thought it would be nice to try something in the heart of Varadero. Nothing beats the location of this resort! When booking this resort, we were aware that although we were booking through Cuatro Palmas we would actually be staying in the eco - rooms located in the Las Palmas across the street. Upon arrival, check - in was made quick and easy through the help of sweet Hanny at the front desk. We were hoping to have a golf cart transport us and our luggage over to the Las Palmas as we were pretty rundown from our flight but were not provided any assistance when it came to going across. However, it was no big deal as the building is only about a 2 min walk away. Once entering the Las Palmas lobby we were greeted by Alberto who carried the two heaviest suitcases we had up the stairs to the second floor as there are no elevators. The four us were able to carry the rest of our baggage that way he would not have to make a second trip but he was willing to do it for us either way. The four of us were provided the with two rooms very close together and were given a brief tour by Alberto. The eco - rooms are perfect! They are clean, have air - conditioners that work very well, TV's with many international networks so that you have access to all your favourite shows and movies, fridges with the perfect temperature, and super comfy beds - probably one of the comfiest I have ever slept on! There is a large balcony as well that is great for hanging wet clothes and towels on as there are no hanging lines in the washroom. The two downsides to the room are 1) The safe does not open/lock with a punch - in code but rather with your room key. Therefore, we did not feel very comfortable with placing any items in the safe as the maids carry these keys as well. 2) The doors of the washroom have clear glass windows from the top to about halfway down providing you with very little to no privacy. For us we would just have to announce when we would be going in to either shower or use the toilet that way the other would not walk by the door. Other than these matters, the room was great and kept clean by Hilda. The only issue we had during the last couple of days of our stay was that we were not being provided with proper shower towels but only little hand towels, and even the number of those dwindled on our last full day. We were simply told that we would have to work with these after asking the maid a couple of times. Nonetheless, the eco - rooms at the Las Palmas were great and satisfied all of our needs during our week long stay. The food at Cuatro Palmas is very similar to that of most resorts I have visited - there is the good and the bad. Breakfast is the one meal that is served at both Las Palmas and Cuatro Palmas, so eating at Las Palmas was more convenient for us. There is a wide variety of fresh options to choose from - eggs any way you would like, fruit, bread. and juices. I stuck to my toast with peanut butter and jam and café con leche - that for me was the perfect start to my day. Lunch and dinner were served in the large dining hall in the Cuatro Palmas. We sat in an area with the most kind - hearted waitresses, Caridad and Barbara, who were so wonderful to us! They made up for the lack of flavor in the food. The chicken and fish was always a bit too salty. The salad bar had the same options just about every day. The pasta bar was nice to have but that too would getting tiring after a few meals. The one night they had a burrito station was absolutely amazing - so delicious! We brought our own peri - peri sauce to put on chicken and veggies which helped immensely but wish we had brought our own black pepper as the humidity often prevented anything from coming out of the shakers. We found a pizza place just down about 5 blocks or so which has a variety of pizzas for under 3 CUCs - the chorizo pizza is the best! We ate here a few times when we had no interest in eating food from the buffet. However, if we did not feel like leaving the resort we would munch on our own snacks or veggies from the buffet and wait until the lobby bar would begin serving food which would be after 11pm. With an introduction given by some new friends we made, Yuri - a feisty yet super sweet woman - at the lobby bar took us under her wing and would make a mean grilled - cheese or hamburger at any time we would ask with all the condiments you would need! Whether it be the start of the night or the end, Yuri will make you that perfect sandwich or burger that hits the spot! The greatest feature of this resort is its location! First off, the beach is absolutely stunning. The pure white sand is smooth and free of any debris as there are garbage cans located every few steps. The water is clear with calm waves and remains shallow for quite a ways out. No matter what time of day we would go out to the beach we would always be able to find four beach chairs within close proximity of each other. We also felt safe leaving our belongings by our chairs and going out into the water as majority of the people on this beach are tourists even though it is a public beach. There are no vendors to hassle you which is another plus as I have encountered that much further down during a previous trip. The only thing that I would advise is to bring your own beach towels from home as renting them from the hotel is a bit of a hassle and to leave the snorkeling gear at home or in your room as there is little to no areas of decent snorkeling along this beach. Also, as many have mentioned in other reviews, bring your own plastic cup or mug from home to put drinks in as it saves you from wasting many little cups that the bars give you. For a refreshing drink, try the Limonada (a yummy frozen lemonade), it really hits the spot! Another major plus about the location is its closeness to all the fun bars/clubs in town. Located directly across the Cuatro Palmas are both Calle 62 and The Beatles Bar and just down at the end of Las Palmas' street is La Comparsita. With them being so close to the hotels you can easily run back to the lobby or your room to use the washroom instead of using the grungy ones at the bars that often don't have toilet paper or you would have to leave a tip to receive a little handful of paper. Another popular place called Casa De La Musica is only a 3 or 4 minute cab ride away or 15 minute walk. With the proximity to these bars/clubs we were afraid of what the noise level would be like for those few early nights we may have. However, there was very little disruption with the AC running so we slept great every night! Overall, the location of this resort is its greatest feature! You are in walking distance to many shops, restaurants, markets, and even the beautiful Josone Park! The staff and service at this resort is truly great with a few members really standing out for us - Hanny at the front desk, Yuri at the lobby bar, Alberto our main man giving us rides in the golf cart whenever he would see us (definitely made up for that first day), Caridad and Barbara in the dining hall, and Michael who operated the pool as he hooked us up with an awesome driver and tour guide for Havana. If you are planning to go, talk to Michael as his friend, Roberto, is probably one of the best guides I have ever had - and he is an opera singer which made for a very enjoyable car ride! Also, I asked to eat at the Buena Vista Social Club in Havana as a restaurant that I have previously been taken to by a guide was not good at all. This restaurant is beautiful and reasonable - for 18 CUCs you get delicious appetizers, side dishes, and a large pizza (it is mouthwatering good)! Whatever we had left over we packed up and ate for dinner. For my third time and my friends' first time in Cuba, we had a wonderful time at this resort. With easy access to all the town has to offer and a front row seat on one of the world's most beautiful beaches, the Starfish Cuatro Palmas/Las Palmas resort is definitely the perfect place to stay. We will be back!
We stayed in this hotel for 2 weeks in May.We had few issues however it is not bad hotel and location was perfect. That was main reason why we chose this hotel. On our arrival we had an issue with our sheets - one was covered in dirty spots, which I assume was definitely washed but only stained as it is standard in Cuba. Another sheet had died fly on it. We went to reception and even receptionist didn't look very interested, duty manager Rudolf took over and sort it out for us very quickly. Praise for this guy, he is always professional, attentive, ready to go an extra mile -caring for guests, booked us a table in one of hotel a la carte restaurants for my birthday even I never asked.Another issue we had was with beach towels. All two weeks we were using our towels but got them quite wet on our last day so decided to ask for hotel towels. We have been told that we have them in our room where we never had since arrived. We been told that we lost them and will have to pay £40 pounds penalty! I categorically declined to pay. Guests relations lady were extremely rude and told us that we signed for the towels on arrival to our housekeeper. I told her we arrived very late and there were no housekeeper so I asked to show me my signature as I knew I never signed anything. Of course our poor housekeeper just made it worse claiming that we definitely had towels as she was changing them! I understand her cause she would have to pay penalty for lost items if we decline to do it. I felt sorry for her cause I assume she just forgot to place them on arrival however I was not willing to pay for a item I never used. At that point we asked a meeting with general manager and to show us we're did we signed. Of course they couldn't find it and told us that we can go to the beach and general manager will see us in couple of hours. When we came back they just told us that they found towels in our room now and there is no further issue. Magic ha?Despite quite rude staff ( there are few fabulous exceptions ) , repetitive food at the main buffet, bad drinks at the main bar, all the rest are great. Location is perfect, beach is spectacular, our room was spacious, however we stayed at Colonian building which is much better than main building.Would like to mention few staff members that are just stars between the rest miserable people. Randy- animator, always happy and friendly guy we made friends with.Yohanmel a server at the main restaurant- amazing, welcoming, professional, definitely deserves promotion.Abel from cocktails bar - such a lovely person and amazing bartender. Don't drink cocktails at the main bar, they don't even know how to make it unless it's rom and coke. Go to cocktails bar and look for Abel. However this bar only opens from 5pm.Generally I would come back to this hotel if some improvements would be made.Tips: stay at colonial buildingBuy tomato juice at the shop if you like Bloody Mary as even it's on the menu, bar never had it.Melt some rude bartenders hearts with some little tips.Buy your wifi cards straight away at 5pm when they start selling them as later they usually don't have any left. Also reception won't tell you but you can book dinner at one of their a la carte restaurants - traditional or Italian. It's included in all inclusive, but you need to book in advance.Don't book your holiday with Cuba Direct, their representative Imillar were only helpful when we wanted to book tours, after we had an issue with one of the guide for Havana trip, she never replied back.Be aware that buses might be late to pick you up to the airport.Regardless have fun and enjoy this colorful and beautiful country.
