Starfish Cuatro Palmas
- What's Included
- All Inclusive Features
A good budget option for Varadero packages, however, travellers should keep in mind that anything under 4 stars in Cuba can be quite basic. The beach here is very nice but the food and room options are minimal and value based. If you are just looking for cheap getaway, then this hotel might suffice. If you want a quality vacation in Varadero, go for a minimum 4 stars. A couple of good, well priced recommendations are the Memories Varadero, Riu Varadero and Iberostar Tainos.
The red tile roof, white-walled courtyard and tropical gardens give this hotel a Spanish-Colonial ambiance which provides a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere for families and couples alike. The Starfish Cuatro Palmas is centrally located downtown, close to shopping, restaurants and bars. The Las Palmas section of the hotel is located across the street from the Cuatro Palmas section of this property.
Location: Downtown, approximately 30 minutes from the Varadero airport.
We had spent the previous two days at a casa particular in Viñales that had no TV, no WiFi, no water pressure and the electricity had been sporadic. We knew that no matter WHAT the Starfish Cuatro Palmas was like, it was going to be better! Our arrival was a breeze. Marianna at the front desk was warm and welcoming, and her English was perfect. She informed us that our room wasn't ready yet, but we were able to store our luggage, and enjoy all of the amenities while we waited. (And yes, that means the all-inclusive cocktails!) Here's a tip: if you go... pack your own beach towel and bathing suit in a separate bag for this situation! It was hard for us to get towels before check-in, but we managed to do it. Here's another tip: BRING A PLASTIC COFFEE MUG or some sort of water bottle/plastic cup. If you do that, you can get your cocktails in that. As large as you like. Otherwise, you get tiny cocktails in paper cups. Bad for the environment, and bad because you have to make more trips to the bar. Yes, you can ask for "4 mojitos please" and you can carry the 4 tiny mojitos down to the beach, but it's much better to have a container with a lid! We saw others do this and kicked ourselves that we hadn't thought of it. Next time! Our room was one of the newly renovated ones... the bed was newer and the furnishings were tasteful. Mini-fridge and safe were fine. Mini-fridge opened with the same key as the room... which made me wonder if the cleaning people's key worked on it too? AC was blasting and appreciated. Bathroom was a little dated, but the shower was large and the water pressure was great. Our room was facing the pool, and yes, it was loud at night with the band playing late and one drunk dude screaming his head off. But the view from the balcony was lovely, and we saw one room with a street view - no thanks! Our sliding glass door didn't close completely air tight - there was a 1" gap, so we probably got more noise due to that. We liked the buffet - a lot of different options daily. One reviewer here pointed out that there were birds in the atrium... this is true. Not sure how they can get them out but it's not like they were dive-bombing my plate or anything like that. I sort of felt badly for them! Dairon at the restaurant was an absolute pleasure. He would refill our water bottles with seltzer and bring us wine and beer almost without being asked. Another gal - cannot remember her name, Irene? - helped me get a reservation at the Italian restaurant after the "cutoff" time, because we'd missed breakfast. (You have to make dinner reservations during breakfast. Yes, it's weird.)The "Italian restaurant" is really just the snack bar with an Italian flag hanging from the ceiling and cloth napkins and tablecloths. We had a lovely meal there for our anniversary, and enjoyed a BOTTLE of Cava for $8. Yes, you read that right. The little speakeasy in the back makes you feel like you've stepped back into Prohibition era. I can't remember the name of the bartender there, but his English was great and he poured us 11 year old rum that was out of this world. True, the lobby restrooms were somewhat dirty, and my boyfriend found there was no TP in the men's room. (I found that to be true in much of Havana... so I wasn't altogether surprised to hear it.) We learned to carry a roll wherever we went! Unfortunately, we needed to visit the infirmary due to "Montezuma's revenge" (NOT related to the Starfish Cuatro Palmas, already had it when we arrived) and the nurse/doctor was so warm and helpful. She felt like your aunt or your best friend's Mom. Note: fee was NOT included and was a little steep, but it was a necessity. Best of all... our departure wasn't until 6 p.m. We were again allowed to store our luggage and enjoy the amenities after check out. PLUS - Marianna told us about a "convenience room" available. Basically, the run-down rooms that haven't been refurbished yet are available for you to go and shower and change before you check out. I thought it would have been a shower in a public restroom, but it was a clean, un-used, private hotel room. I would not have wanted to stay in that room, but to shower there with clean towels and be able to go to the airport not covered in salt, sand and chlorine? Ahhhh-mazing. We finished up with a glass of ron añejo while we waited for our taxi. Gracias...
2nd visit to this hotel and definitely not last.... Many improvements since our last visit in April... Very clean rooms, grounds, beach, pool, buffet.....Service was AMAZING, entertainment staff was great, GM David SUPER as well as public relations Elimay, front desk service was great, chambermaids very nice.... Entire staff was superFood was excellent (for Cuba) actually the best we've had in Cuba, and we have been to Cuba over 60 times in different locations ( Cayo coco, Cayo Santa Maria, holguin, Havana, camaguay, and other hotels in varadero)Many thanks to GM DAVID, Elimay and all the staff for making our stay so wonderfulWe will be returning for sure, we highly recommend this hotelLOCATION is the best, Calle 62 in front of hotel, the Beatles bar 2 min walk from the hotel, nice big parc near by, many things to do in walking distance from hotel
We arrived at 6:30 am and knew we would not be able to get to our rooms til 4. The staff took our luggage and we were able to change and lounge and sleep at the pool and beach. Our rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable, we were in the villas which were about a 5 min walk from the main hotel but it was not an issue. The food was very good with plenty of choices. Desserts were excellent. We went to the restaurant 4 times and the food was very good. The location is excellent as you can walk to many attractions. We had stayed at Blau Varedero our previous trip and it was excellent however you had to take cabs to everything. The staff were the best! We had excellent service from everyone and the manager was always present ensuring things were running smoothly. We were there for their 25 anniversary and you could see the pride in the staff's eyes. It was a great time.If you want quiet rooms you need to know some won't be as you are in the downtown area and music is a large part if the culture. The music did not bother me as I knew this in advance and we were usually out til 3 enjoying the nightlife. Others who did not like the noise were accommodated as rooms became availableIf I go back to Varedero I will be booking here again!
The positives on this hotel is that it is right on the beach. The water and sand are gorgeous! The negatives is that the hotel is dated and dirty. The rooms had dirty floors and ants. The bathrooms in the lobby smelled and ran out of toilet paper. The drinks in the main bar were crap. We had a horrible time with reception trying to figure out if they had a room or not. We waited over 2 hours with many conflicting pieces of information. The food was so-so. Birds were in the dining room and eating off the buffet. I would not stay here again.
I have been to Cuba a few times but always stayed at hotels that were with higher rating. This time I decided to stay downtown Varadero and be walking distance to all the clubs. I was very hesitant to stay in this hotel based on some bad reviews that I read but majority of the reviews were very positive. My friend who has been here before also gave me a a very good review so I decided to risk it and it has paid off for me.I lived in Palmas Section across the road from the main building and I loved it. I had a beatiful garden and river view from the window with magnificent sunsets. Room was always kept clean and though the furniture was very basic, the bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning worked perfectly. Plus the only time I spent in the room when I slept. I was definitely pleasantly surprised with the food selection comparing to other hotels and have enjoyed all my breakfasts, lunches and dinners. The waiters are very attentitive, friendly and genuine which you can't say about every hotel in Cuba. Dinners with live music was a very nice touch.Beach is great, lots of sun beds and also places if you wanna be in the shade. Turquoise water that you want to stay in all day.Entertainment staff especially Carlito and Randy were great and very entertaining. Nice thing you could participate in as many activities as you wanted without being harassed or pushed into participating.Don't miss the night shows as the staff works very hard and the shows are of a good quality.Location is great and within 2-5 minutes walk to Calle 62, Beatles live music bar and other clubs that you can alternate through the night.I was looking to have a nice relaxing vacation and got just that and more. All the hotel staff is working very hard to make your stay as pleasant as possible. They all seem to have a very good friendly relationship with each other that helps with morale in the hotel and keeps the guests happy.I have never seen the General manager who would so actively participate in all the hotel activities. David, GM, would help set up the plates if it gets too busy in the dining room and seem to be in all areas of the hotel at once making sure things are running smoothly. David also enjoys talking to guests and is a very genuine and hard working person.I gave a five star rating because of the quality of the service and experience I received.Thank you to all hotel staff for making my stay so pleasant and always making me feel safe with enough security presence.I booked another trip and coming back on July 23rd. Can hardly wait!Elena
