A budget resort in Varadero, the Starfish Varadero is only for the brave and budget minded. In Cuba we highly recommend spending a bit more and upgrade to a minimum 4 star resort. It is well worth the money as 3 star resorts in Cuba can be very basic with poor service.
Location: Beachfront, 40 km from Varadero International, 10 min to Varadero.
This was my second trip to starfish varadero. This time it was for a wedding. The staff remembered me from the previous visit and were just as awesome as they were during the first visit. They had also done a bunch of Reno’s to the hotel from the last time I was there. I would and have recommended this hotel to friends.
First time here, going back next year. First off, I tip my hat to the bar staff. Their service was amazing all week. Balthazar, Denis, Osmany, "Baby 😊", Yisel, Lazaro all made sure our group (we were not a small group) was well taken care of. I look forward to seeing you all again next year!We booked our trip through Susan Bradbury with GOwithHIPPO travel. Excellent deal, direct flights and renovated rooms. Beautiful bathroom, clean sheets, nice balcony with distant ocean view. Working a/c. If you tip the maids properly, you'll walk into your room and notice everything is properly placed and organized, shirts pressed and hung up, bathroom clean and towels replenished, fridge stocked. We also had some baked goods to "bribe" them with 😉.The food. Cuba is not reknown for their food. I am also not a picky eater, but I cook and I know good food when i see it. The a la carte restaurants are excellent. I had surf and turf, tuna steak, seafood pasta, lasagna, which were all amazing. The best meal of the week was the BBQ a la carte near the buffet, it's was absolutely delicious. Everything cooked over charcoal, nom nom nom.... It reminded me of home. Most mornings, i would opt for a sportbar breakfast. The grilled cheese, ham and cheese, omelettes were very good. Burger were excellent. It's also the only place you'll find Heinz ketchup. It's catsup (with catsup condiment in the ingredients, hehe) everywhere else 😉. I'm always careful when I eat at buffets, so I'll exclude that portion as I didn't properly experience it. The fish, fruits, veggies, cheese and thick cut prosciutto were all that I needed..... surprisingly 😁. Front desk staff, diana was very helpful settling up a mix up we had regarding the account. Check in, check out, had to get an extra key made, all without a problem. "The scene". This is very subjective as I was there for only 7 days and their demographic could change based on the season. Although I found "the scene" to be a good mix. A good amount of singles and couples. The disco is what you make of it. We ran that place for a week so we had a good time, just keep in mind, the dj and the Mc do a great job, but it's up to you to make your night. They throw a great party. Lobby bar has daily live entertainers which were super cool. Magicians, piano players, acordians, statue buskers, it was always something different and fitting with the mood of the day. The pool bar pizza may look a little weird, but they're your best friend. Ham and cheese for the win. Poutine is weird fyi lol. Poolside activites are on the mellow side, keeping in mind there is a children's section in that pool. They had animal exhibits and played bingo, things like that. We mainly hung out by the quiet pools, very spacious, surrounded by beds. There was always room to set up there. For those of you who are still reading my great Cuban experience, you'll be thankful you stuck along for the ride. I cant reveal too much detail, but we walked around the resort one day with a keen eye. And we found a hidden gem. All I can say is don't go snooping around people's rooms, or employee areas, your just gonna get in trouble. What we found was awesome and accessible on the grounds. If you find It, you'll know what I was referring to. They also have a rock that looks just like jabba the hut, I couldn't be more serious about that. He's in the open, keep your eyes out 😉(keen eye). Cubans love Canadians, and Canadians love Cubans, that no secret. This resort was an excellent experience and I'm happy to say that I will be back next year. Advisories: -there are a few pot holes in the walking paths, they're hard to miss, just pay attention. -Lobby stairs. A beautiful spiral staircase which is safely navigated on the outside edge (large tread). Risky business speed walking down the inside edge after dinner😉, I almost found out the hard way. You've been warned. I wish you all the best on your vacations and I hope you choose the starfish varadero. Its a smoking deal for the price and as long as you have an open mind, you'll have a great time! Thanks starfish varadero, see you next year!
I stayed at Starfish from 2-8 Feb with my fiancé in a bungalow. I find the other positive reviews on par with our stay – and also feel people who rate the resort lower are basing it off of 4 or 5 star locations. The rooms were clean, the AC worked, and the nightly entertainment was amazing for a smaller resort. It was my first experience with Cuban food but we always found something to eat even without the buffet varying. I had sirloin at the grill near the beach twice, lasagna and spaghetti at the Italian restaurant, and the pizza and the chicken fingers at the pool bar. It was hard getting into the a la carte locations since there are no reservations if you went later (8:30) you were ignored, but we just learned to go earlier. If you fly Sunwing the Italian is open to you at lunch, so we started going there at lunch. Warnings: 1. We tried to be careful what we ate, (we discovered other families traveling had spoiled milk one morning at breakfast), but despite being careful my fiancé and I were both sick following our second last day, and my fiancé was ill for a week, ending in emergency 3 days after we got home with an extreme case of salmonella. I know you can get this in a lot of foreign countries but we were only drinking bottled water and eating food that looked like it was fully cooked and safe – so now I am leery to recommend this resort overall due to that reason. 2. If you want a quiet retreat in your room to get away the bungalows are not for you. Next time we travel we will be looking for a resort with an adult only area to stay since 100% of the children’s entertainment was at the pool, or the stage, both very close to the bungalows. This was all very loud, in Spanish, through a microphone. This was fine when we spent the days at the other pool, or at the beach, but it meant there was no napping, or quiet rest in the bungalows with the all afternoon - into the evening bingo, musical chairs and children’s dance parties with whistles. Not a big deal but something to consider before booking.3. Most of the bartenders at the main level pool bar, and beach bar made our vacation amazing, occasionally bringing drinks to our chairs at the beach, and treating us like family, however not all bartenders at Starfish are this way. Our first drink order when we arrived we gave to a bartender at the pool bar - and then he just walked away and served someone else without ever making ours. Another bartender at the upper level pool would leave for periods of time and visit with coworkers in the back before returning to the bar – to a group of people needing drinks. It was to the point she would walk out and pour her own beer and walk into the back again. We were familiar with Cuban time, and were tipping all staff, however some completely did not care about hospitality, or us receiving any sort of service at all. This may be standard for less expensive resorts however I was surprised with this lack of service, especially with these positions being so high paying due to tips by comparison to other jobs in Cuba, and even within the resort. This was still a beautiful vacation, summer weather, and a nice resort to be able to experience Cuba despite being sick. I highly recommend if you visit this area you contact Havana Journey’s. We booked a private guided tour with a tour guide and driver in a hardtop classic car to Havana. This is an experience I will never forget. We saw old Havana, modern Havana, and stopped in Matanzas. We saw Havana in a way you never would be able to on a group tour – including going into people’s homes and small local market stores. This tour from Varadero for the entire day for both of us was only $140, with no deposit ahead.
Pleasantly pleased! The staff was very friendly! Food was great and available 24 hrs a day.. cooked to order! 2 pools to choose from and entertainment was good. Frodays outside afternoon BBQ and entertainment was awesome! Dont miss out. Starts around 1pm when i head back to Cuba this is the resort i will be booking. If your the type that looks at broken tile on your relaxing vacation then go elsewhere. They are improving this resort daily and can only get better! I see a 5 star in their future!
I brought my 11 year old daughter to Starfish for a week in January. We went with a friend of mine and another friend met us there. We stayed in Bungalow 14-4 and had such a wonderful time! The resort has everything we could ask for, we felt very spoiled! We had three beds set up, they were quite comfortable and the space was huge! Lots of room! We only had warm water while we were there but it wasn’t an issue for us.We really enjoyed the food. We all had our favourites. I loved the red and black sausages that were served on the buffet and pork in Cuba is much better than beef! The staff were mostly all friendly, we had really good laughs with Yaimari, Osmany and Alex at the buffet restaurant. They’re one of the many reasons we would like to return! Also Santana at sizzlers was special. He helped us out with a birthday cake too! He was always pretty busy, but tries his best. Marguerite and Yvan at the beach bar made the BEST cocktails. The ice machine at the resort broke a few years ago and it’s really hard to get another one in so they have to buy ice from neighboring resorts so it’s best to order icy cocktails earlier in the day!Rocky the bellman doubles as a concierge and set us up with a few drivers. We went in a 57 Chevy for the day with a driver and a guide into Havana. What a memorable adventure! Our guide was amazing! Maybelis Galosso. She knew her stuff! Really sweet girl that tried to make sure everyone was happy. We paid 150$ (pesos) for the driver and guide for the day.We enjoyed a beach party, a foam pool party, entertaining shows, a circus, a pirate beach day with BBQ right in the ocean! We will definitely (hopefully) be back and would happily stay again at Starfish!
