A budget resort in Varadero, the Starfish Varadero is only for the brave and budget minded. In Cuba we highly recommend spending a bit more and upgrade to a minimum 4 star resort. It is well worth the money as 3 star resorts in Cuba can be very basic with poor service.
Location: Beachfront, 40 km from Varadero International, 10 min to Varadero.
I stayed here solo for 12 days , Jan 4-15The weather was horrible, but nobody has control of that , naturally .I booked bungalow right from the start 6 months prior, it was very outdated, expect to have hooks and towel holders missing in the bathroom, my front door dead bolt did not work properly, which I did not know about . I walked in and I got locked inside for half a day on the first day , until after 3 phone calls to the front desk two maintenance workers climbed up onto my second floor balcony to rescue me :)))) . Good thing I brought a bottle of Malibu Rum from Canadian Duty Free , so I just got tipsy while I was waiting and it did not seem too bad. They removed the dead bolt completely and never replaced it , so my chambermaid would barge into my room few times while I was In the bathroom , doing my business or walking naked while getting ready for the beach , lol I never had hot water for the entire 12 days and it was not the hottest weather outside , around 18-22 C by 5 pm, just when you are dreaming about a nice hot shower after freezing on the beach most of the day . There is a sticker above the shower head position, saying 50C ( maybe as a warning for caution not to burn yourself ) ... Oh , I soooo wish it was true, not even close ! To give you an idea, the shower was the same temp as the shower by the pool side to wash off sand and salt water. But , of coarse it was not all that bad. On the bright side the location of the bungalows were absolutely perfect , literally 20 steps to the beach and quieter than main hotel rooms.I had to pay 25CUCs for a room safe , but it gave me a great peace of mind.I was tipping my maid, and was friendly with her, so I always got towels , water , coffee for my inroom coffee maker and bed sheets changed.Service all around the resort is excellent , stuff is very accommodating and friendly , they do expect tips , but that is given anywhere you go.Buffet food was OK, however on my day 8, my digestive system started to disagree with me, I don’t know why, I was not throwing up, but feeling super bloated and uneasy , making sure the bathroom is near for the rest of my stay. I’ve been to Cuba 5 times before and did not have this kind of problem.Sunwing kind of warns you in their little brochure , saying that stomach issues could be due to excess of sun and alcohol , I guarantee you, this was not my case .The beach is fantastic for long walks and runs if you wish , but dirty , full of garbige , they just rake it with a tractor every morning, sort of turning the sand over with all the plastic still remaining in it, afterwards the wind blows and takes it all into the ocean, which was very sad to see.Younger crowd is predominant at this resort, mostly in their early 20s . So , there will be lots of rowdiness and noise, lobby is always full, sports bar on 3rd level is packed.Maybe it was cuz of cold front and guest could not go to the beach. Bottom line .If you are not to fussy and don’t expect luxury , this place might be for you . It was affordable for me as I was on single supplement and did not really have much to choose from , I think , it is decent for the price I paid.I would recommend this resort , if you are there for the beach and water activities.
Great location to go for a run on the beautiful sandy beach. Delicious buffet was above the standard we expected, which was a lovely surprise!I Loved how close the property was to the beach. The location is one of the best in Varadero. The resort is beautiful!! . choose from everything you want .. bar available directly on the beach. Ask for Ivan, one of the best bartenders, remembers your drinks !!! Pure white sand with azure blue water. Opportunity to rent a kayak and kite surfing. The evening shows were also really entertaining. Every night different performance, dancing, magic show. I really liked the people there, always smiling, and make efforts to make you feel at home. Dayami, server at buffet is one of the best ones-lights up the room !!! She looks after everybody....We enjoyed coming to buffet to feel her energy. Wendy at public relations was awesome and most helpful. . It's a beautiful place to walk around and enjoy the area. Hoping to come back soon!!!
Was all excited about going to Starfish Varadero as we went to Starfish Cayo Santa Maria. but guess what, all disappointed, no kids clubs , no entertainment at all, room with no place to put clothes except 6 hangers lol and went i complain they added 4 more as if 3 luggages clothes will be on hanger.pictures on web site looks very nice and beside i tough it was the Starfish quarto which was so far the only Starfish in Varadero, but no waythis resort just change the name to Starfish, in fact my building still have the old name Aquas Azules, the kids were so bord, no activites for them and the weather was not great.i guess once the transition is done maybe it will be better, but for now it is i big NO NO NO!!! 2 Jacuzzi were out of service.I discuss with others parent they have the same feeling of being mislead by the name.oh safelocker you have to payotherwise staff are very nice, cleaning lady aswellas usual beach was nice on hot days lol
So first our rooms were very far away from main lobby which wasn't good when travelling with an 83 year old. Tried to change room but just got lip service. It appeared to us that sunwing vacationers received better treatment then Air Canada Vacationers....apparently sunwing is a major share holder of the hotel. It was the old Club Amigos, beside the Blau ...Room: not very clean, towels were only changed 3 times in 10 days, we didn't have a problem with hot water and pressure was good. Key had to be rebooted about 3 times.Beach: great, chairs were never an issue for us but we did see some people without beach chairsPools : Ok if you like pools, only went into the quiet pool once. Chair an issue at busy pool.... People saving their chairs all dayRestaurants / Food : good for Cuban standards but repetitive and not always throughly cookedBars: no quiet bars.... Mostly loudInternet: hit and miss for a buck but when working it works as good as homeGeneral cleanliness : public bathrooms are rated minus 6 Out of a scale from 1-10. They're horrendous with lack of paper, soap etc GROSS. The birds and the cats were not an issue for me as I know the cats are there for a reason. One guy got bit by a dog when he was petting it. Pathways : need work.... many tripping hazards, not much lighting and 3 inch stair in the middle of nowhere just waiting to break an ankleWorkers: all where great..... They're Cuban
Advertised as a 3 star hotel but anything but! This hotel is seriously dated. We were given a room in the hotel section -the room turned out to be seriously dated and in a run down state-dirtiness broken furniture etc. I have traveled to Cuba a few times in the past and this hotel was the worst. We paid for a safety deposit box up front and then it never worked so had to fight to get our money back which we did on the last day. The staff for the most part are friendly enough. The food was sub par even for a Cuban 3 star and most of the time was serve cold -could not face cold scrambled eggs every morning. The bars had limited selection . Our room had no hot water the first few days and then the last 2 days only hot water-great filling up your toilet with hot water! Extra bedding or towels not available unless you persist. Beds were worn out and need to be replaced. The beach and pools are okay but the hot tub was not available while we were there. All we can say is that we will never go back there but advise people to spend extra money to get a better place than this hotel.
