Kura Hulanda Lodge & Beach Club

We were so lucky to have Kura Hulanda as our home away from home for a whole week. The property is gorgeous, blessed by nature, and very well maintained. The rooms are spacious and air conditioned. All the staff were very friendly, and the service was perfect provided you consider that it's all on 'island time'.The restaurants were lovely, well decorated, with a good selection of cocktails. The menus were a little limited, and the food was pretty basic, but we never had any problems and what we did order was delicious. The beach is beautiful and clean, and it's nice that there is a lunch restaurant and bar down near the beach area. Playa Kalki is definitely the cleanest beach in the area, with the most amenities. We rented a kayak and that was lovely. Mostly we did a lot of snorkelling. The roped in area is nice, but I would recommend exploring further to the left, right along the cliffs. You can also swim all the way to Playa Grandi, where sea turtles can be found in their natural habitat. Truly amazing. This place is not a pristine, done up, party-style resort. It is an authentic, nature-y escape. There is the occasional rust spot, and you will definitely encounter wildlife, but this was part of the charm. I would highly recommend staying here providing you aren't expecting it to be something it isn't. There are plenty of chains further in toward the city that offer the party-resort/American all-inclusive experience. In terms of a genuine experience of Antillean culture and Curacao's natural environment, this place is a win.
I enjoyed staying here, mostly for the views, the nearby restaurants, the isolation, and the ease of getting to some beautiful/less busy beaches than downtown (if you have a car). There was no wifi in the room which was my biggest complaint. If that's not an issue for you then it will be fine. Also, half of our showers were cold. I didn't mind so much because it's warm outside, but some people enjoy a warm shower. The food wasn't very good and you have limited options up north especially if you don't have a car. Could make little tweaks to make the place much better. Nice and friendly staff which made the experience much better!
We stayed here for our 1 year anniversary in April of 2016. At first I was a little put off because yes, the bathroom is a little older and the patio furniture is older and sun faded et. But the room itself very spacious, ac worked great and you can not beat the view from the balcony! It was beautiful. The beach is a little rocky- not the super soft sand of the say, the Caymans, but that's how all the beaches in Curacao are. The underwater views are amazing and clear. The front desk staff was very accommodating and helpful as this was our first trip to the island. She made dinner referral and reservations for our anniversary dinner in town and always helped on best shore snorkeling beaches.. BTW almost all are beautiful especially on the north west coast. This hotel is quite far from the "main city" and airport (about and hour) but this side has all the best beaches. The roads and driving are insane on this island! We had a great time, and I honestly only saw a handful of other couples/families. It felt as we had the entire place to ourselves. We ate dinner in the nicer restaurant and it was pretty good. If your on the top floor your door key opens from the bottom floor, than the steeper staircase is inside the room that takes you up. I recommend this place based on the helpful staff, view and location of the best beaches on island!! Cant wait to go back
What a nice resort and what a friendly people!a warm welcome with a cocktail!special thanks to the 70years (young) lady at the desk and her cousin!but all employees were so friendly and kind! never had that before!we stayed for 2 weeks all inclusive and the first week was very quit so we may order a la carte while lunch and diner, what a fantastic food they serve! the tender lion and the red snapper are PERFECT!!!the second week there are more guest and we get buffet. Even that was fantastic.no much choise but what they had was very good! great taste of all products!first we stay at the rooms "in the woods side" : nice room fantastic bed!!!! and nice shower. the airco was broken and we get a room at seaside.that was a bigger room with separate bedroom/bathroom and livingroom.and a fantastic view over the ocean and sun set!both rooms were not very updated but just in real Antilian style.everyday new sheets and towels and the cleaning was good.there were 2 swimming pools, 1 at the bar (central located) that was a little bit cloudy but ok. the other swimming pool was more clear and bigger. very nice to stay there!also the beach directly at the resort is phenomenal with good beds! also the food at the beach was delicious!the resort is located at Westpoint and about 45minutes by car to the capital city.every day a free transfer to Willemstad but we recommend a rental car! also to visit Mambo beach! (1hour drive)is there nothing negative about this fantastic resort?! well 1 thing, and i am sorry to say that but the man in the bar (tall man) wasnt that friendly, it looks like he didnt like his job and he was very frugal to his (alcoholic) drinks.the wifi connection was very good, free wifi at the reception, bar, restaurant and central swimmingpool.also the wifi in the room (only wifi at the seaside rooms) was very fast!when my bf went ill the reception desk ladies directly arranged an Doctor and asked afterwards how he was doing.... so friendly!once again it was a great vacation, we really enjoyed it.
I have just read a few other reviews of this place. Yes, it does have a small rocky beach. Yes, it is great for scuba diving. No, I did not have to pay for my lounge on the beach. Yes, the workers are friendly. Now the items that truly matter when you are on vacation in a remote area.We were assigned to a room on the ocean front. Sounded great. But,the staff member who led us to our room had no idea how to unlock the door. As my husband pointed out, he should've tried to use the door to our room. OK,we got inside: no A/C, bed looked rumpled, the ocean front view was offset by moldy pavers and unkempt gardens. The bathroom might have been ok 50 years ago. It was disgusting. We were moved to an upstairs suite an hour later.Very nice rooms:bedroom, good bathroom,sitting/kitchen area,TV in BR and LR (horrible tv service) ,sporadic internet, inadequately stocked kitchenette (no pots or pans), no dish cloth or tea towel, watered down dish soap, bed linens were good, bath towels were old, thin, would be great as rags. The food: it was questionable. What do I mean? It wasn't tasty. We wondered about its age, regfrigeration, sanitation. Why? In the grocery stores nearby, eggs and various meats were for sale but NOT refrigerated. Neither one of us could eat our last meal at the hotel; it did not taste right. A hotel employee told us their water is safe to drink. I did use their water to brew coffee. This a decision I regret.Because the food at the hotel was ridiculously expensive ( $20.00 each for breakfast - we were told there were no prepaid food plans) we ate breakfast in our room and had a few dinners at nearby restaurants. The food elsewhere was just as bad. One meal at the Ranchero Restaurant down the road, made both of us ill that night. The repercussions from this week are with me today. I have been nauseous since our return home Dec. 24.I have been to the ER twice and tomorrow I am going for further testing,to try to discover what I brought home with me. This three weeks of punishment!!!The pool is disgusting. One person referenced a "sandy" beach? The beach has a small amt of sand; the rest is very large rocks and broken coral. But there are thousands of pieces of coral and rock!I would Never, Ever stay at this hotel again!! In response to others' comments - yes, this place has fabulous potential. Someone just needs a few million dollars to restore it.
