Kura Hulanda Lodge & Beach Club

I traveled with my 26 year old daughter to kura hulanda in mid March . We were looking for a place to unwind by the sea and kura hulanda was the perfect choice . We checked into our garden room and absolutely loved it . The room was great and it had a large outdoor living space . We would find ourselves out on our deck surrounded by trees and we felt at peace and so far away from our hectic lives back home . Often we could watch the iguanas and their antics or see colorful birds including parrots and hummingbirds . Our days were spent under a cabana listening to the lapping waves and pondering all the colors of the sea. We'd watch the frigate birds as they fished and check out the action from the dive shop up the beach and the hours passed . We snorkeled quite a bit and saw many great fish including several moray eels , reef squid, parrotfish, peacock flounder, Atlantic spade fish, file fish, butterfly fish and the adorable trunk fish . When we weren't at the beach or in the water we strolled the grounds , or took a dip in the pool . We rented a car but honestly all we wanted to do was stay on the grounds at kura hulanda . We ate most of our meals there and the food was fine . We did grab a bite at sol food which was excellent and rancho Sabrina which was fun and funky . Each morning at daybreak I would walk to watamula to lay my eyes on the crashing sea on that side of the island . The parrots accompanied me for much of my morning pilgrimage . I am missing that routine already . A special shout out to Stella as she took very good care of us and her calming presence is something I hope to channel.I would recommend kura hulanda to travelers who appreciate the natural beauty of this planet and are seeking a more classic Dutch carribean experience. If you like Las Vegas you might look elsewhere . We loved every minute and hope to return soon !
We looked for a quite week in a tropical location remote enough to enjoy just snorkeling and beach. We found this and more. Ocean view suite we stayed in was big above our expectation, almost small condo. The balcony provided fantastic view, being spaced only twenty meters from high shore. The cottages are set in tropical park with a number of sculpture art along tropical garden paths. Front desk and in particular Daily was very helpful. The rooms in our suite were very clean, although lack of good technical maintenance was evident, as some other buildings starts to deteriorate. Apparently, the resort is currently under transition and we can only hope that new Owner will come with much needed investment to keep this beautiful and elegant resort (simply, jewel!) up to high standard. One thing that was not up to expected standard was food (buffet), which as noted also by others, was bland and with minimal variety. Yet, in our Almost All Inclusive vacation package, wine was free, as Blue Curacao cocktail too. Aha… amazingly, we haven’t seen single mosquito, or as per se any insect, even if we were keeping doors open...and had a big hole in bedroom window’s screen.
I was fortunate enough to spend 3 days here, enjoying the beach and snorkeling. Stayed at a Garden superior, that is basically a rustic cabin with an outdoor living room and small kitchen. Yes, the resort shows lack of investment, but the room was perfect, with AC, and location cannot be beat. The beach is very good and you can use the beach chairs for free if staying at the hotel. Just don't forget to use beach shoes as entry is a bit complicated without them. Did my own meals or ate out, so cannot comment on the Restaurant. Cocktails are a must do at sunset. Do not miss going to Playa Grandi to see all the turtles and simply enjoy. The only negatives are the mosquitoes....and wifi not working on the room!
We really enjoyed our time spent here because of the great beach, nearby amenities, its quiet location away from Wilemstad, and our clean, nice suite. There were a few glitches though that you should be aware of before booking. The hotel is located at the far north end of the island, offering a more remote experience than is available closer to busy Wilemstad. You will want a car. Kalki Beach is beautiful and great for snorkeling – we saw a great variety of fish just snorkeling from shore. We also snorkeled south of the resort where we saw even more fish, and the resort is close to numerous other beaches that offers snorkeling from shore. The room (204) was kept very clean. It had a kitchenette that served our food allergies well and we had a fantastic view of the ocean from our patio where we ate our breakfasts. We also loved the private outdoor shower. Stella at the front desk was extremely helpful!Check in was very slow (45 minutes). Resort food – pretty bland and minimal variety for the two meals we ate – we did not buy the all-inclusive and would NOT recommend it unless you are simply looking for calories and have no food allergies. Much better gastro-experiences are available nearby. We spoke with an Expedia rep, who told us they could handle food allergies, but they only offered a small buffet that would NOT have accommodated us. The filter on the pool by the bar wasn’t working and the temporary system wasn’t sufficient to keep it clean. Pool towels often were not available. Our water heater went out two days before we left and not repaired. Fitness room was musty and equipment was old. The windows and patio door could use screens – we love fresh air, but not bugs.Nearby: Lots and lots of beautiful beaches. Restaurants: Trio Penotti, Landhuis Misje, Rancho Sobrino were all great experiences with delicious, fresh foods, friendly owners and staff. All the restaurants had outdoor seating, which was very pleasant since it was 20 degree F at home. The Barber minimarket for Spam, eggs, butter, coffee, instant coffee, bug spray, inexpensive wine. Go West Diving on Playa Kalki for a fun snorkeling trip to the Blue Room Cave and a sunken boat that we wouldn’t have seen from shore. Close to the Christoffelpark, which we didn’t visit, but heard from others it was very nice.
First off I would like to say that the views from the suites and staff are exceptional. It is unfortunate though that our suite was in such a bad state. We only stayed one night and would not have stayed any more, simply because it would have been unhealthy. We loved the location and beach and wish our experience had been better.1) The biggest issue was the visible Black Mould2) Terrible Musty smell in room3) Non working refrigerator4) No Hot water5) Sketchy A/CNot a real big deal but the safe and wifi were also not working.I am assuming we must have gotten a suite that was not used in some time as the other reviews mention nothing of our issues. We would love to travel back here again, This side of the island is incredible and away from the hustle and bustle of the "touristy" areas however we will need to be certain that at the very least the mould problem is eliminated..
