Kura Hulanda Lodge & Beach Club

- All Inclusive Features
I am sorry to have to write my worst review ever of an establishment, I understand this review will impact the employees of this establishment and I apologize to them for its impact but, the truth must be told. First off we are seasoned travelers and have traveled in several countries so we are accustomed to various lodging everything from campgrounds and hostels to Villas in Europe. My main contention with this hotel is that of their fraudulent atmosphere. They pretend to be something they are not. We decided to stay here purely because of its location, close to the Indian cave, the Eye of Curacau, beach and dive access. We did initially book the hotel through a second party web site and thought the reservation were taken care of. Later we received an email cancelling our reservation we then needed to rebook at a higher rate paying the all inclusive rate. This had to be done since we all ready made travel arrangements and scheduling for other portions of the trip. (In other words we were given the old bait and switch routine) we paid way too much for the services provided. Yes, you can say the are providing said services but, not to a reasonable end as one would expect. (Please see attached photos of the sub-par accommodations)The experience began with us getting to our room and finding a used bar of soap in the soap rack, then we discovered the air conditioning was not working and subsequent other items in the room were missing or non functional. Then we discovered the insects, droppings, mold, and bug in the bed. Upon our walk trough the complex we found exposed electrical wiring, and other hazardous conditions trough out the grounds, in addition to the iguana dung that remained on the steps. Due to the hour were forced to have dinner at the complex. The location of the restaurant was dark and served buffet style the food was not great by any stretch of the imagination and consisted of your basic M.R.E. menu, The best part of the meal was sharing it with the children of some of the staff members. The next morning we checked out and booked another hotel and asked that the manager contact us via email. They never did. Again, by no means are we snotty travelers but, I hate to see people being deceived believing they are getting a certain point of value for their hard earned money and getting deceived.
The views are stunning from the hotel! The bartender,Edmond was great and the resort has the potential to be awesome! My wife and I checked in on July 15th. We were scheduled to stay until the 22nd. We only stayed 2 nights after our experience before I requested to be transferred to the Sunscape Resort. They are currently switching ownership and are having severe management and staffing issues. Also, it really isn't all inclusive. Snack time for both nights we were there amounted to 5 chicken nuggets, nothing more. The beach bar is not included or really associated with the hotel as is the same for the dive shop. You are not even able to charge the food or snorkel gear to your room! This means you have to carry cash or credit card down to the beach. The public beach access makes the beach difficult to get chairs (about 20 total available) sometimes and questionable leaving bags with cash or credit when your in the water. The spa was closed, the gym was very unclean, dusty and no air conditioning or paddle fan. There was/is only one restaurant to eat. The food was pretty good and the atmosphere fairly nice. The food is very similar each night with very limited selections. You also had to get up and go to the bar to get a drink. Failure to provide or have available basic things occurred numerous times. Things like napkins, silverware, salt and pepper, condiments and alternative beverages. When I asked for these items it often took several minutes to get a response or check to see if they had any napkins, condiments, etc. There is no waiter/waitress service per say. Mixed drinks at the bar are also very limited. Forget top shelf, I mean just basic drinks like a house Margarita. The room had again stunning views, but the outside door had no door knobs. The walkway was completely covered in iguana poop. It was fairly disgusting! This was directly in front of our door. The first night I honestly wrote it off because we checked in around 4 pm. However, once staff come into your room to service, they should have washed it off by mid morning the next day at least. It didn't get cleaned up until the 3rd morning when we had had enough and were leaving. I actual spoke to management the first and second night giving them an opportunity to compromise or meet me half way on some of my concerns regarding service and selections. The resort needs to make a few modest changes have a personal pep talk and it could be great but right now I strongly advise you stay away!
Last week, I had a bad experience at Kura Hulanda Lodge. On arrival ( July 18th) my reservation, which I did on May 30th, was not processed. Afterwards, the reservation was found to be processed 1 month earlier. The room I eventually got was very poorly maintained. After 1 day, I did not get the front door open anymore. Also maintenance had trouble opening the door. I requested another room and got a room with wifi. But finally the wifi did not work. I was made happy with a dead mouse. In total, I paid US$ 1000 for 3 nights (2 adults, 3 children) all inclusive. But the money I paid is not in proportion to the quality I received. On the one hand, the rooms are not maintained but on the other hand the food was also bad. Little choice, little variety and cheap food. Lots of drinks were out of stock like apple juice, punch, coconut rum and ponche cream. The opening and closing hours of the Christoffel bar were not in accordance with the information received upon arrival. I was about to leave after 1 day but thanks to the good service and hospitality of a number of staff, I decided to stay. With this I would like to thank Deli, Jeanaid, Suen, Dinjo, Sauntje and Edmond for their good help and hospitality. They deserve a bonus. It will be time for management to be replaced. Kura Hulanda lodge is almost bankrupt. Due to poor management, the building has deteriorated, food is poor, some food and beverages are continuously out of stock, personnel make overtime and are frustrated. Nevertheless, a few staff members still provide good service. Thanks to them I had a nice time with my family.
My review is not to trash the hotel, its to help people that are in search of a nice hotel and basic accommodations. I wish I would have listened to the bad reviews, but when you see only 3 bad reviews and a lot of "very good" reviews you tend to ignore the bad ones DONT DO IT!!!!.NO WIFI!!!!! ONLY IN THE LOBBY AND ITS SUPER SLOW, NO WIFI IN THE ROOMS!1. If you like to eat and like food DO NOT STAY HERE! -The food is horrible, the All inclusive is a joke- only Buffet Breakfast, lunch & dinner. Cold foods are not placed over ice (cold cuts, salads etc.) And if you don't have all inclusive, good luck finding a place to eat, they only have "Playa kalki grill" opened from 12-4pm. After that good luck! There is only 2 food options (Watamula really bad buffet) & playa kalki (limited food items)-There is no in-room dining FYI!, No Shop where you can buy snacks or bottles of water, I was dehydrated for a couple of days. Could only get water when the restaurant opened. One morning they severed frozen pancakes and they did not have syrup. 2. The tennis court is a lie (they said its not in use). There is no "spa", You don't get a welcome drink at check in (that's lie). 3. The pool by the bar is very nice! The inclusive drinks at the bar are only (juice, coke, sprite, cocktail of the day, 1 brand tap beer, red or white wine, some liquors). But if you want Ginger ale (that's not included) stick to coke or sprite! The bar is the only place you can get drinks, even water! (You cannot bring any food or drinks to the room). 4.The rooms are okay, you will not see a super clean toilet, its more like a campsite. I would not dare put my feet on the floor. The mini kitchen is super gross and dirty. Tv's are old school. Ac works nice. no hair dryer, nice safe, limited toiletries (no dental kit or toothpaste). 5.The beach is the star of the show! The private beach is so beautiful, its the only thing that this resort has that probably keeps it open. When you look up the hotel its says "5 star" that's a lie! Its more of a 2 Star caliber! The hotel is far from all the activities and no tour companies will pick up you and drop of. You have to make your own way to the city. The shuttle is not consistent they say it runs everyday departing at 8:30AM and returning at 4PM. (One day we were at the lobby at 8:28AM, and they had told us that the shuttle already left.) We had to change all of our plans because we had no transportation to the city. (The next day the shuttle left at 8:48). When we took their shuttle we thought we were going to get in a car accident that driver was going very fast I had to yell at him to slow down. Nobody says hi in the hotel! You have to great them first before they greet you. Nobody smiles and they look at you as if you are a bother. DONT DO IT!!!!
The room was very nice with a gorgeous balcony and view. The ceiling / air conditioner was leaking. The key card for our room did not open the room. They sent a staff member out to open the room with a physical key. They could not provide a physical key to us however. So their solution was for us to go to reception each time we wanted to be let into the room. We waited most of the day for them to fix the lock on the door, delaying our plans. They finally offered us another room which was not even made up yet and not as nice as the original room. We waited there for them to make it up before deciding we'd prefer the nicer room with the broken lock. It was finally fixed the next day, but they didn't even tell us, we discovered by accident. They did give us free buffet breakfast to make up for the lock situation. The location is good, but a car is necessary. The hotel grounds are gorgeous. The amenities are good with a pool we didn't use and beach access which we did. Parking is available, but people often park poorly so you may not be able to find a spot in front our your room.
