Be Live Grand Marien

One of the highlight at belive collection Marien(puerto plata)was the room service lady (clara), extremely friendly, helpful and respectful. Also the bartenders and general staff were very friendly. The worse thing I experienced was the constant smoking of the tourist in non smoking areas.
First I'm mentioning that the staff was AMAZING! Super friendly, speak some Spanish to them and they will love you for attempting! Everyone was super nice.I booked this location through Groupon (travel agency is another story) and the grounds were nice. They had a buffet with a menu that changed daily as well as 4 al carte restaurants. I thought the food was ok, nothing exceptional but I'm a pescetarian so I can really only talk about the seafood and the vegetables. My boyfriend ate the other options and he also said it was ok as well. We BOTH got sick but it was on the second to the last day and we were there for 6 nights! Horrible diarrhea but it only lasted 2 days. The beach had a lot of seaweed on it and in the water. We only got in one day because we travelled in December so the ocean was pretty cold and the sky was partially cloudy. The pool was beautiful and clean but there was no swim up bar and EVERY day we went out there they were out of towels. There was a wine bar, a dance bar and a club/casino (just a walk to the street) on site and they were pretty fun but it did get routine after the second time. We spent 3 days out for excursions so we didn't stay at the resort the whole time. I feel we would have been bored if we did but it was acceptable for the time we spent there.
just got back from Be Live Marien. Read many reviews before booking so will add to give info for others planning on going. PROS AND CONS PROS. Resort property is really pretty. Well cared for. Lots of species of green palms, nice size to walk around from lobby to beachCON: very slow check in at front desk. we were third in line though and happy our room was ready early . ROOM: stayed in the "superior room" Building 8 with pool view. Typical DR furnature tired and old, but the room was spacious. loved the king bed. lots of counter space for belongings. liked the separate toilette room. great black out curtains. Jocelyn our maid for the room 8221 was great. shower had great pressure but cooler water in the morning but hot water at night. used jacuzzi tub and jets worked but the pop up drain didn't work so we got inventive and used a face cloth. DO NOT drink the water, but okay to wash/showerCON: was only a single sink so was kind of tight getting readyCON: air conditioning didn't work for the first 4 days after my husband repeatedly going to the front desk. Late evening day 4 back to the desk to see what could be done and Jose came 10 mins later. Fixed something and the cold air came on. Problem then was that could not control the thermostat so went from 78F in the room to constant 68F so had to balance the cold by opening the patio door to actually let heat INCON: patio doors didn't closeCON: having to rent a safe for the week if you want to keep your valuables secure. We bring a small travel safe though so not a problem for us. CON: fridge never did get cold but was well stocked and every day had 2 lg bottles of water for us with beer and soft drinksPOOL: PRO: liked the different areas of the pool because of the shape. quiet areas, party area with activities and then area of volleyball net. Animation team was loads of fun. Shout out to Bladamir, Santano and Mosquito for their endless energy and keeping us laughing and getting us involved in all the pool side games, water polo, water basketball. Had fun with the daily morning water aerobics'Liked the different shower stations around the pool to wash off sand from the beach before jumping in.Loads of towels available at the towel hut, but it was also low volume season so don't know what it would be like high season?Like all resorts people save their chairs for the day and don't ever come back to use them so finding a place in the shade under a palm umbrella was challenging so we resorted to the same practice and would go early to save our chair.CON: Population by the pool more than doubled with families on a weekend stay as we were not aware this is an open resort to the public. Everyone enjoyed themselves, but was very busy and finding a chair around the pool was difficult and it got loud loud loud with loads of kids running around CON: no staff around pool to pick up empty drink glasses (although these should not be left by the guests anyways). when there was someone picking them up, they dumped the drinks down the filters around the pool instead of a separate pail or bucket.CON: NOT a swim up bar if that is what you are looking for at the pool, but never had to wait much for drink serviceFOOD~~don't really know where to start??ONLY PRO: a la carte restaurants were okay. Visited Brazilian ~which was basically go get your own salad from the salad bar for starter then the waiters would come around with large skewers of meats (lamb, beef, turkey, ham, sausage) and cut off what you wanted at the table.Tasked okay. Waiters were excellent and really worked hard keeping up with keeping everyone well fed. Neat concept. We also went to the Medeteranian/ Mylos. twice. Mostly because it was the only restaurant on the resort that had air conditioning to enjoy your food in comfort. Soups were really really good, and the stuffed chicken was tasty, but the appetizers weren't really that appetizing at all. Salmon was kind of mushy and the shrimp and artichoke was drenched in balsamic dressing. Veal dish was good but not really well cooked. We didn't visit the Mexican so can not comment.CON: Buffet, Brazilian and Mexican restaurants are outdoor and through your entire meal you are sweating in places that you never though possible. My husband looked like he had just come in from a dip in the ocean by the end of the meal. Very very hot/humid all meals. Even in the morning when the air was relatively "warm" the breakfast buffet was sweltering. Closed palm leaf type ceilings so no place for hot air to escape. the food at the buffet was not really that appetizing at all. Lucky they had boiled eggs, pancakes and bacon in the morning because that is what I survived on all week. Almost went psycho when one morning there weren't any pancakes OR bacon ! My plate was pretty sparse that day. Found the doughnut station though so filled up on those and some fruit. Thankfully my husband found the omelette grill to keep him happy because every day at the buffet there were wieners, carrots, boiled potatoes, loads of salad choices, runny scrambled eggs, cold cut meats and sweaty sliced cheeses for BREAKFAST. Much the same for lunch. Did have a lot of meat dishes, and fish but all were swimming in some sort of sauces . Hot food was hot so that is a pro. The waiters and waitresses (ola Francine) were always there to fill up you water, clear your plates or help when ever needed so excellent service. Down by the beach there is a snack bar that was even less appetizing. Hamburgers and hot dogs not at all cooked. First bite and saw the red raw meat inside. A few salad choices. One day there was fried chicken that was palatable.BEACH: for those wondering NO SNORKELING off the beach. Not very many shade umbrellas to seek refuge from the hot sun during the day. Sand was nice. Shore not rocky at all so didn't need our water shoes. Go for a short walk along the beach towards other resorts and you will find cheap souvenir shops to get all of your plastic "larimar" earrings, tshirts, dresses and such. Will bargain for prices too. Quite expensive at the resort in their shopsEXCURSIONS: Puerto Plata City tour disappointing. Advertised as Rum factory tour, cigar factory tour, chocolate factory, Amber museum tour, .......what actually happens is they take you to a jewelry store that has a small room where a man cuts, grinds and polishes some larimar to make pendants and rings then you are free to shop in their store. At the "rum factory" they take you to a store to taste a variety of rums and encourage to buy but no factory at all..just a friend's store....and the chocolate tour is a video that you watch then they bring you to the store to again...buy their product. Cigar "factory" the same. A store selling cigars that has a young man demonstrating how to roll a cigar. Informative but definitely not a factory tour Would not go back mostly because we have never been to the same resort twice, but also because we like to snorkel and can not off shore. Twice our snorkel trip we booked was cancelled apparently because of the weather/waves, but personally I think it is because there weren't enough people booked for the excursion to make it worth their while to send out the catamaran.but mostly the food was sub par and restaurants were so hot and humid so not enjoyable.
- Resort is small.- Beach is not great. - Food: 3 restaurants but each restaurant is only open one day per week. If you did not make a reservation by noon, you will have to say hello to the buffet. Brazilian restaurant has no AC. It's torture! Food is no taste to it at all. Mediterranean restaurant is better.- The buffet was ok.- No hair conditioner in the room. I asked the front desk, they said I have to buy it from store. They only provide shampoo!!!- Pool: 1. It's ok. They allow one pool towel per day per customer! Props: The property is clean. Room is clean and AC worked perfectly. We stayed at building #9** We will not go back to this resort!
My trip in summary was great, there's no perfection anywhere on this hearth. But with those surveys there are better chances of improvement. So I hope they will be greatly considered and make necessary changes
