Our Opinion

If you're looking for a great hotel with lots of food choices and a decent beach, this is it. Overall this is a solid 4 star, great for the kids and it even has a swim up bar for the adults.

A delightful beachfront hotel, set in the heart of the Playa Dorada Resort complex on 100 hectares of creatively landscaped grounds. From the central fountain in the lobby area to the Victorian-style gazebos in the main buffet restaurant, the Gran Ventana is known for its classy style. Well run and family-owned, it boasts a spectacular free-form pool with swim-up bar, and a second pool which provides its own quiet atmosphere.

Location: Beachfront, 5 minutes from downtown Puerto Plata, 25 minutes from the airport.

I cannot say enough to express what an amazing time my boyfriend and I had at this resort. There was something for both of us to be entertained and happy everyday. The food and staff were excellent and there are a few I'd like to particularly mention:Santa a wonderful server at the buffetJose Miguel also a great server at the buffet and late night snack barElvin the bartender with all the tricksAlex, Cesar, Shorty, Carlos and Delphy from the entertainment team!All of these people stood out and made us feel like family because of them we're planning to go back with a bigger crowd.Thank you all so much for making our stay truly memorable.

Another great holiday at the GV

It was our third visit of the year (and close to 20th overall) but the most rain in more than 75 years did not spoil our holiday. October is our favourite time to visit as the resort is more quiet. We were pleased we had the premium programme so we could go to the Vintage Club on those rainy afternoons.This visit we stayed in the Catalina building as the Saona was being redecorated and was having some maintenance work done. Our room was on the second floor and overlooked the walkway to the beach and was directly across from our old room. Our maid, Amarylis, kept the room spotless and was very friendly. Exiting this building I never needed my brolly as there is a longer way out, which you can use if it is raining, where you can come out by the Kids Club and then go under the canopy near the theatre.In spite of the resort being at lower occupancy for the first two weeks, we were surprised at the variety of food at the main buffet as we expected there would not be as much choice. We really love the new buffet, something for everyone. I had to finish off my breakfast every day with a made to order smoothie. (Juan) Eduardo remembered my order from April. The new name tags are certainly confusing some of us!While we were there the Italian restaurant was being renovated so many guests did not know that the Tikki bar was open as the entrance to the Beata was boarded over. We did go over to see Jackie (the bartender there) a few times and she was looking forward to things being back to normal. There will be changes for the Italian a la carte for the high season. For the first two weeks there were lots of pool and beach activities including the usual games on the beach, yoga and zumba on the beach but the inclement weather in the third week meant the activities had to be curtailed somewhat. As always the entertainment team worked very hard.Due to the heavy rain the ocean was not as clear as usual but it was not as windy in the afternoons so we only saw Yakky doing his kite surfing acrobatics a couple of times. Still, we only missed one full day in 21 days at the beach due to rain. The garden staff who we don't usually see much of, were working extra hard keeping the grounds, especially the walkways to the beach and the beach in top condition. After all the GV beach is the best in the Playa Dorada complex.We would like to thank Karen, the Club Manager who is particularly helpful and friendly and thanks also to the lovely bartender, Vereniece, who always has a nice smile.The new GM, Pedro, is doing a great job and has many new projects planned for the future. His UTube videos are informative and can be seen on the resorts FB page.I would love to mention some of the other great staff members but it would take too long. The staff is another reasons why the resort has so many repeat guests (nearly 50%).Once again we met lots of old friends from Halifax and Edmonton, PEI, New York and UK and made several new friends from Ontario and Northamptonshire, UK.We would also like to thank the owners and management team of the family owned resort for the humanitarian effort to help staff members who have been made homeless by the flooding in Puerto Plata.

This resort is a great place for "bang for your buck". Staff are amazing, very friendly, helpful and welcoming. Special thanks to Cesar! who was fun, friendly and had a way to make guests feel "like family". Food was great!! Our room was always clean and the maid service excellent. This is a small resort so you don't have to walk far to get anywhere, the beach is right there. The Buffet dining room was excellent. Our fav was the beach restaurant (Ocean View). We spent most of our time at the beach although the beach vendors were a real pain in the butt!! Way to many and they never let up! It was hard to rest in a lounger on the beach b/c of these beach sellers, there are dozens of them and each one will come around 6-8 times each day, unpacking the stuff they were selling and really pushy. I have been to a lot of resorts but none with so many wandering beach vendors that were really a nuisance. They are nice, friendly but way to much!! I know of a couple who won't go back to this resort for that reason alone. And I might add, I feel the same way. The entertainment was great and the entertainers worked hard to do a good job. The pool and pool bar is awesome as well. We met friendly fun ppl from all over the world. The bartenders are so sweet, esp Luis at the pool bar, and Elvin, they are so friendly and fun, mixing whatever you want, no skimping there lol.The beach was kept clean and every day there was beach cleaners raking and picking up any debris the tide brought in. Once in the water though the beach is very short, (like knee to waist) before weeds and rocks, it is good for those who like to snorkel, but for me, I prefer to a beach without stepping on rocks or weeds and wore water shoes, and drops off suddenly. The shore beach is lovely though.

Mucho Excellente

My wife and I chose the Royal Package, and we were not disappointed. From the time we arrived, right up until the time we left. Lets start with the arrival. Upon entering the resort, we were greeted with a cool refreshing cocktail. Immediately upon checking in, we were taken up to the "Vista Lounge" which is a perk for Premium and Royal upgrades. International alcohol brands and a beautiful Air Conditioned lounge with Sofas and relaxing music, what a start to our vacation. There we met Karen, the Manager of the Vista Lounge. She gave us a quick debriefing of what the resort had to offer while we were having another cocktail and some snacks. We then proceeded to our room, 2308 third floor in the Catalina wing. Beautiful room, King size bed, balcony over looking the resort and Ocean through the Palm trees, Paradise! Within minutes our baggage arrived. We spent most of our time down at the Beach, in the Private Area with our Cushion loungers and Balinese bed. Here we had our 2 waiters taking care of us all day and all week with food and drink. I have to mention their names because of the great job they did. Aquilino and Amable kept us entertained with great service and conversation for the entire week, and Felipe setting our loungers and Balinese beds for us. We learned some Spanish, and they practiced their English, 5+ stars for these 3 guys. Honorable mention has to go to Elvin, bartender at the Beach bar. He put a show on every time he made a drink, flipping bottles and glasses, always a big smile. The other 2 Honorable mention goes to the Vintage Club employees, Jose and Verenice, she makes the greatest Spanish coffee, which we had everyday. Also to our lady who kept our room clean and well stocked, I unfortunately forgot her name.The only downside is the vendors on the beach, for the most part a simple Ola and no grassias and they would move on. But there were some very aggressive vendors that took a little more convincing to just move on. We did end up buying some souvenirs during the week, and by the end of the week were on a first name basis with many of them. The food at the buffet was good, nothing spectacular. We ate at the Specialty restaurants every night for supper, another perk of the Royal package, and that food and service was very good. Our reservations were all handled by the Vintage Club rep, and were never a problem to get our choice.The Beach food was also pretty good, just eating on the Beach was great enough.The house wine is not the greatest, they should upgrade that.The nightly entertainment at the outdoor Theater was also very good. Different theme every night with music and Dancers, and getting the crowd involved, you want to get there early to get a good seat, it is worth the waiting time. At this resort, all the staff are very hard workers and always have a smile, indeed a pleasure meeting so many of them. We felt very safe here on the premises and on the beach, Security everywhere.The only bad thing unfortunately, the weather was not co-operative, lots of rain during the week, but that did not stop us from having a great vacation, we still ended up with a decent tan. Overall we were very impressed with this Resort and will be returning here in the future, we would recommend it to everyone.An added note, tipping for your services go a long way, we were very appreciative for all the people that took good care of us, we arrived as strangers, and left as family and friends. Staff were great even with the pressure of ongoing rain.

Our first room was 1322. It was quiet and we had a partial sea view. Unfortunately the area had experienced torrential downpours the previous week and continued off and on during our week. We had a small leak from the bathroom ceiling (roof direct above) our first full day & the 2nd day water appeared on the wall beside the plug. Reception offered to change our room or supply an extension cord and we opted for the latter. Unfortunately by the 3rd evening our bathroom ceiling was bowed from water which had also appeared in our hall, so we asked to be moved before it gave way. Within a 1/2 hr. we were moved to a premium room # 1347. The whole week the staff worked diligently to try to keep the floors as dry as possible. Schools were closed in the town, as was the airport one day, due to hydroplaning. Reception responded to every concern.Our maids,first Maria Cristina and later Lidia worked hard all day. Lidia even brought flower petals from home to decorate guest beds. A lovely touch! The food was varied each day. We had a wonderful waitress, Judelka, who got to know our tastes. Our friend was celebrating a birthday and she went over and above to supply a cake and decorate our table and chairs. We went to the Italian restaurant one day but preferred the service in the main dining room. We also went to the Octopus one evening and the steak was excellent. We did make it to the beach one day. There were a lot of people selling goods on the beach and you had to give a definite nada gracias or they would persist. The staff tried to keep the beach as clean as possible, though trees, etc. washed up after each downpour. This is a small resort, which was a blessing when trying to move from place to place in rain. The entertainment dancers worked extremely hard to give interesting productions most evenings. Even during the day staff tried to keep guests engaged in activities. Also there was a separate childrens' programme. We did get in the pool two days when the rain let up a little and enjoyed the swim up bar, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks provided. Room safes are available for a charge of $16 per week. Wi-fi is available in room, but also for an extra charge - $3 per hr. $10 per day or $35 per week. If you want to take a tour the hotel can arrange for a taxi and guide. The taxi cost is for 1-5 guests. The guide is tipped at whatever amount the guests decide on. The cost was much more reasonable than booking the same tour with the Air Canada Rep.

Vacations packages include round-trip flights, accommodations, round-trip transfers (unless outlined below) to and from the hotel, and tourist cards (if required, unless outlined below).

If selecting an all-inclusive resort option, the package will also include the all-inclusive features as outlined by each resort.
