If you're looking for a great hotel with lots of food choices and a decent beach, this is it. Overall this is a solid 4 star, great for the kids and it even has a swim up bar for the adults.
First time back since 2011 but the atmosphere and friendliness remains the same.Staff All staff friendly and efficientRoomsRooms a bit tired but good enough and well cleaned. Had an issue with broken balcony door but maintenance on scene very quickly. Maid service excellent.FoodMain buffet refurbished but less choice than before. E.g. roast of the day only every 3 days! Managers weekly party for returning guests less choice of canapes etc. Breakfast still good. Beach snack bar also very good.Enjoyed all 3 a la carte restaurants however ocean grill missing a trick with too much artificial light and not enough candles killing the atmosphere somewhat.PoolsQuiet pool still a very pleasant space to escape noise of main pool. Main pool very busy with activities. BeachBeautiful area to relax. Lovely breeze to keep you cool. Only issue is constant vendors hassling you every 2 minutes . Very off putting. Beware return travellers of being flattered as return guests and charged more for a pedicure than the actual hotel salon!. We made the mistake of engaging a jewellery guy who ended up giving us a sob story and trying to persuade us to give him the beer and coke from the mini bar. Avoid at all costs and say no!!Premium and Royal Upgrade Definately upgrade as this service is amazing. The vintage club is superb with international brands and wee snacks on the go. Special beach area has food and drink waiter service and very comfy sunbeds. We loved the club and the designers have captured the carribean nautical atmosphere to a tee and candle lit at night.Misc Medical centre nearby excellent. Thomson tour rep Sylvia top class.Overall A few changes and cutbacks over the years but a great atmosphere and good value for money. Upgrade to Premium class.
We've just returned from 15 night stay and the resort and service were really good. We really liked the quiet pool, as it was more peaceful than the main pool, and there we also had pleasure of being served by Jackie who was really kind and friendly. I do recommend the Jackie special cocktail too. Its very refreshing. We ate in the main restaurant most days/nights and overall we enjoyed this as food was good and there was plenty of choice; However we did find the service slow some mornings/lunch to get our teas/coffees and drinks. However Raul was excellent and would click his fingers to get the service moving. Also later in holiday we found seats nearer the kitchen and there we were served by Joan who was excellent, attentively filling our drinks before they got empty. Our only disappointment is we didn't sit in his section earlier in the holiday. We also ate in the al a carte restaurants and really loved the Italian and Octopus. The service there was great and food was excellent. We also ate at Ocean Grill but was less impressed as service was slow. The rooms were good and maids came daily to clean and re-stocked the fridge. The only thing which we found odd was that they usually came and took your towels before they did the room, so sometimes we'd come back from breakfast and have no towels available to dry our hands once we'd washed them. In evenings, we liked to go have drinks; However we sometimes struggled to find somewhere to sit. The main bar/entertainment has plenty of seats but we found it too loud. We therefore opted to sit by quiet pool/ italian restaurant on some evenings which was great but on those nights we noticed we got a lot of mosquito bites around our legs and ankles which could be from the pond around the bar. We therefore started sitting in the bar by the main pool which was a compromise as was little quieter than entertainment bar and mosquito free. It was also undercover which was good when we had the tropical rain storm. Overall though this was great holiday and we really enjoyed our stay!!
This is my fourth trip to Puerto Plata in the last 8 years and this resort is by far my favourite! It's much smaller than others I have been too which we completely loved. You can get from your room to the beach/pool/buffet/lobby/theatre in about 2 minutes and the beach in about 3 minutes! Buffet had less food choices than my previous experiences but being a smaller resort I can understand that but we never had a problem filling our plates! The three a la carte restaurants exceeded my expectations and were Five Star quality not only on taste by appearance and service.Just got home two days ago and we are already planning to return in April with family and friends! Can't say enough about this little piece of paradise. Keep up the good work Robert and your team at GHV!
Nice hotel...Very expensive as we went during the Christmas period and we paid for an upgrade. Food was adequate.Beach was beautiful and very good service due to upgrade. Sellers a bit of a pain but all lovely people.
Just returned from 2 weeks t Gran Ventana, all the staff are great special mention for Jackie at the Tiki bar and Raul and Joan in the main restaurant who all went that extra mile to make your stay special. The hotel is kept clean although the large pool often had debris floating and could do with some extra cleaning. Our room was clean although some what tired having said this I believe refurbishing is in process so hopefully this will be addressed. Food in the buffet restaurant is good with lots of choice we ate at the a la carte restaurants and enjoyed both the Italian and Octopus restaurants but our experience of the Ocean grill was very disappointing food definitely not up to the standard of the others and service very slow. Our first weekend was some what spoilt as the. hotel was taken over by locals as it was a bank holiday for them and the calm relaxing hotel turned into a noisy free for all which I think played a part in our experience in the Ocean grill. We had a few minor problems with our room which were solved very quickly once reported to reception. One problem which needs attention is the lack of parasols at the pools e.g at the quiet pool for around 50 sun beds there are only 8 parasols also at coffee stations often no mugs available only plastic cups which are not really suitable for hot drinks.Having said all this we enjoyed our stay and if you are looking for a relaxing break at a reasonable price this hotel ticks the box.
