VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort

If you're looking for a great hotel with lots of food choices and a decent beach, this is it. Overall this is a solid 4 star, great for the kids and it even has a swim up bar for the adults.
My daughter and her girlfriend stayed at La Gran Ventana Beach Resort. They were amazed with the quality of the resort, especially given the low price that they paid. The grounds were beautifully designed, the entertainment staff was a ton of fun, and the pool and beach were beautiful. There was a cute little rock garden on a peninsula just a short walk from Gran Ventana's beach property. The buffet food was decent, but what really stood out were the different restaurants they were able to sample just by making a reservation. There were some small issues with the electricity and water in the beginning of their stay, but it had little effect on the fun they had during their trip. Although they did not spend a lot of time at the resort, they still got to know the entertainment staff and were often called upon for activities and dancing. The shows were also spectacular! The mall is easily accessible from the resort and a great place to go shopping for souvenirs. The girls had a ton of fun, and would definitely stay at Gran Ventana again if given the opportunity.
This resort is not terrible by any means, but there is definitely room for improvement. My husband and I had made arrangements by email about 3 weeks prior to arrival, to upgrade to Premium, which includes free WiFi, access to the Vintage Bar and private beach, and an upgraded room. Upon arrival we were told that they had run out of the bracelets for the Premium upgrade and that we would have to come back the next day, which was somewhat annoying and odd. We were told that we had a beautiful suite. Hmmm. I don't know want constitutes a suite but it was a large room with a bed, 2 night tables and a unit with some shelves, a mini-fridge and a small television. The bathroom was very dated (tub had been repaired with some kind of epoxy, the grout needed replacing, fixtures were rusty and there was always water on the floor). We did go for the upgrade the next day, with promises of a renovated room, which we asked to see before we paid but were told that it wasn't possible because the room hadn't been vacated yet. We were asked to pay first and they would show us the room later. Foolishly, we agreed. When we returned later to be shown the new room, it was actually exactly the same as the one we had, except much smaller. We opted to stay where we were. It's difficult to say whether it was worth the extra $30/night/person for the upgrade, but at least we did have WiFi (normally $35/week for each device), such as it was, and we were happy to have reservations to the al a carte restaurants made for us easily. Also, the Vintage Bar is very peaceful and comfortable and the drinks were fabulous. Because the weather wasn't the best while were there, we made good use of this space. A huge shout out to Verenice, who was so lovely and friendly. It was a pleasure to chat with her and her service was amazing - always smiling and so gracious. Also, when we did visit the private beach, the service there was excellent. The vendors were friendly, but it did become annoying to be interrupted every few minutes when I just wanted to relax and read.We thought the buffet was fine for breakfast and some dinner selections were pretty good. We liked both the Italian and the Caribbean (Octopus) restaurants, but were very unimpressed with the Ocean Grill. I suppose they were overbooked for reservations because we were put in the bar, pretty much on our own and neither the food nor the service was very good. The resort itself is well laid-out and not too large. The beach is very nice. The drinks in the bars (other than Vintage) were pretty ghastly - way too syrupy-sweet.As others have mentioned, and we witnessed as well, cleanliness with the plastic glasses left a lot to be desired: a quick wash in a sink (if you're lucky), followed by a quick rinse. Many people had brought their own mugs, which was probably a good idea. As well, a server dropped a load of cutlery on the floor in the buffet and just picked it up and continued to place them on tables. I'm not a germaphobe, but...So to wrap up, there were some good aspects to this resort, but we wouldn't return. In fact, I doubt we'll go back to the Dominican any time soon. It felt very unsafe outside of the resort. This is a very poor country, so if you go please tip generously and consider bringing school supplies and other items to distribute or leave behind.
We arrived at the resort around 10:30 pm and I have to say it's a great time to arrive, there was no one ahead of us in line, we breezed right up to the counter, got our room and were off, no waiting at all, the only downside is that you cannot get your safe until the following morning. I had e-mailed the Fidelity Club a month in advance and had requested a first floor room in the Catalina building as close to the beach as possible and we were given exactly that, unfortunatly we were not able to have a late checkout which was a big let down but not a deal breaker, I had also requested that in my email, it would be nice if there was some way to be able to assign rooms of those who arrive at night to others that are arriving at night. Our room was one of the updated ones which unfortunatly no longer have the dresser with drawers to put your clothes which is very inconvenient especially when you are there for 2 weeks or more, this is something that I feel should be looked at and perhaps a small dresser beside the cabinet with the TV and fridge in it, would be wonderful, there is certainly room for it without making the room too crowded but again not a deal breaker. We ate at all three restaurants and they were very good, the buffet was our go to place for breakfast and lunch. We had no problem finding something good to eat. Very good variety in the meat department but the side dishes (ex: veggies, potatoes, etc...) could have had a better variety. In my opinion having to lift the lids on all the dishes really slows things down and does not keep the food hot and the salad bar being right in front of it slows things down even more, perhaps would be a good idea to move the salad. there is alot of wasted space with with that huge bar, perhaps the salad bar could be moved somehow there. Great variety of fruit and desserts.Everyone is so friendly and always a hola for youThe beach was beautiful and always kept so clean but if you want a palapa in a good spot you have to be down there real early to get one, we always got there around 5:00am and some were already taken, the old saying goes, the early bird catches the worm. We will be back next year.
