Our Opinion

If you're looking for a great hotel with lots of food choices and a decent beach, this is it. Overall this is a solid 4 star, great for the kids and it even has a swim up bar for the adults.

A delightful beachfront hotel, set in the heart of the Playa Dorada Resort complex on 100 hectares of creatively landscaped grounds. From the central fountain in the lobby area to the Victorian-style gazebos in the main buffet restaurant, the Gran Ventana is known for its classy style. Well run and family-owned, it boasts a spectacular free-form pool with swim-up bar, and a second pool which provides its own quiet atmosphere.

Location: Beachfront, 5 minutes from downtown Puerto Plata, 25 minutes from the airport.

Nice hotel, beautiful beach

Rooms are spacious and the location is great. 2 minutes walk to the beautiful beach. Staff pleasant and very helpful If you're planning to stay be sure to ask for a room that is far from the bar. The Karaoke singing is very loud and goes on until very late. (Although I asked for a quiet room I got one that on 3 of the 4 nights I spent there it was impossible to sleep. There are extra expenses: wi-fi costs 24$ for 4 days, to use the safe in the room costs 10$.

wheelchair user review - great and friendly

after reviewing and booking through Thomson's we were looking forward to our holibobs. We were greeted upon arrival with a cool clean cloth and refreshing drink and then shown to our room. The place looked amazing. From the very start we were impressed with the hotel and the staff. The room was clean and tidy and had enough room for my wheelchair to be out of the way whilst we were in the room. If anything, there was maybe a lack of storage for clothes but other than that we were very happy. We had paid to upgrade to the premium package when we booked so when we got to the beach we had the private area with waiter service. massive praise to Amable and Aquilino - the guys were always on the ball and no sooner was my glass nearly empty, then they had a refill there. They were a great a laugh and very very friendly. Also have to say thanks to the forgotten man Fillippe - this guy is a hard worker with no recognition - constantly pulling out mattress's, sorting beds etc - all the manual work - on the whole beach and a lovely guy as well.As others have said there are certainly "looky looky" guys and gals up and down the beach constantly. I found a simple firm but polite "no thanks" and they moved on - please mind this is a poor country and they are only trying to make a living. (most lower paid workers are on minimum wage of $200 per month (about £160) and these guys aren't even on that - commission only). As it happens i love hand carved wood and bought multiple pieces at a price both they and i were happy with (i don't mind paying a bit extra if it will help put food on their tables). In regards to tipping - i have to say i was totally amazed by the friendliness of the staff - nearly all of them - and this was before we tipped anyone. It isn't expected but it does go down great. Personally (and this is only my opinion) i was happy to tip $5 or $10 every now and then as opposed a dollar or 2 every time. i felt this was better for me and them as i usually only had regular contact with the same staff. but regardless of whom i tipped, everyone was always smiling and talking to us and always helpful. they really are a happy people - genuinely. As for disabled access, over all the hotel is quite wheelchair friendly. Several ramps of low incline into the Buffet restaurant, the stage bar and up round to reception. The wheelchair ramp leading up to the Ocean Grill is a bit steeper, and if you continue over it you come to 2 disabled accessed sunbeds with an umberalla thingy for the shade - personally i thought them rather out the way but its good they made the effort. My wife and i used the private beach - it was a little bit past the ocean grill/ disabled ramp around the side of the building and past the kids park (a bit tired looking and not too much there), and when we got to the top one of the guys i mentioned earlier were straight there to help me from the chair and assist me wobbling down to the sunbed. Again, the guys were amazing. They then parked up the wheelchair and always had it setup for me leaving before i reached to path. (really cant praise them enough). The staff in the buffet restaurant were really good - praise to Denny - as soon as he clocked us he was right over with the tea and sugar for my wife (she's a bit of a tea jenny) it was a nice touch. The greeters, Maria and the other lass (i'm really sorry but forgot her name - but she did call me "the happy man " hehe) were also always smiling and polite. To be fair, all of them, including the chefs were the same - always happy, said hello, always helpful. as i have said - just a really happy people.now for the reason i give 4 marks instead of 5 being a wheel chair user with very limited mobility we booked through our local Thomson's travel agent in-store. after a couple of days we discovered that one of the main restaurants (the Octopus) and the Premium Bar (this was one of the main reason we upgraded - the stronger and named drinks were here only) were up a flight of stairs which i couldn't access. Through the process of reporting this to my rep the hotel offered to bring us food from the restaurant down to the buffet restaurant seating area, but we declined as we felt we wouldn't be getting the full enjoyment from the restaurant and we would feel awkward with the waiting staff attending to only us - no offer was made to do the same from the Premium bar though, but had that also been the case then it would have meant my wife going upstairs every time to order our drink. Also, after the first week the hotel merged the Italian restaurant with the Octopus one up the stairs - something they do every year during the quieter season apparently - but this then put 2 of the 3 restaurants out of use for us.Also something we were not informed of was that at this quieter time of year they only open each of the 3 a la carte restaurants 2 nights a week each............this meant that because 2 of them were "out of bounds" i couldn't even use my third voucher on the ocean grill as was closed. (guests are given 3 vouchers per week.)These things would have been nice to know at the time of booking as we could have made a more informed decision about where we were going and what we were getting for our cash.To be fair, the hotel did offer a special meal just for us at the ocean grill one night and extra wine or something, but again, we declined. we didn't wish to be the awkward couple who stood out more but they did try to help a bit. (i do believe the issue is with the communication between our holiday company and myself or the hotel and the holiday company). The roads immediately outside the hotel are a bit rough and have a steeper than normal camber making for a difficult time for my wife pushing the wheelchair, and some of the kerbs are deep and without lowered parts, but other than that there wasn't an issue. Our Rep was Jose - he was fantastic. he is Dominican with great english and when we contacted him about the "restaurant problem" he was great. very understanding and got on the issue right away. very happy and very helpful. we had a great time on the whole, and made some new friends. only done a couple of excursions (Paradise Island - see my review - and Bravissamo) and spent a lot of time relaxing on the beach - my wife works really hard so i felt she deserved this relaxing time. would like to think i would return but the restaurant issue might have just put me off, but if not for that i would definitely return. included in our package was unlimited wifi - each week you are given a code for the week - i found no problems with it at all. It work right down on the beach and every where else in the hotel we went. Its a bit expensive to buy weekly but they do offer free wifi in the stage area.if you want 5 star then go elsewhere, but if you are happy with your lot, this is a great place for the money it cost and again, the staff made it better for us.

Family holiday

Spent a fantastic two weeks here. Food was excellent, great variety and selection. No need to get up at crack of dawn to reserve a sun lounger, always managed to find one. Different on beach as there weren't as many huts but we would just walk down to beach swim, snorejel or go out on canoes and then go back to the pool area. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Entertainment staff worked very hard and the games they did got people mixing with each other. Would have been good to know that you got a certificate if you won games and they were handed out in evening, only downside was the time seemed to be different each night, they could be put in your room as they had been printed out. Room nice and clean, could have done with more drawer space not enough for a family of 4 for two weeks.

This Was The Best Vacation Ever!!!!!

Okay, let me start by saying that I booked 6 days and 5 nights at this resort through Groupon for a great price. After booking I started researching reviews and was horrified by some stories and was even considering cancelling the trip and rebooking elsewhere. I literally read so many reviews and decided that the ratio of good to bad was significant and decided to come anyways. Plus the pictures looked beautiful. I went with my boyfriend for my birthday and we decided the get the Royal Package due to the reviews on that being great. GREAT IS NOT THE WORD!Amazing, fantastic, out of this world etc!!!!We had an amazing time!!!!!! As soon as we checked in we were greeted with cocktails and being that we arrived around 12, our room wasn't fully ready, so the manager, Karen, took us on a small tour and sat with us explaining all the benefits of the package as well as helping make reservations for all the restaurants while we waited. They took our bags so we weren't lugging them around and served us drinks and snacks in the Vintage Club, which may I say has AMAZING drinks. She along with Tony kept us occupied and entertained while they readied our room. They led us to the buffet to have lunch and around 1-1:15 our room was finally ready. When we walked into the room it was beautiful and spacious. Very clean. Bathroom was beautiful and clean tub. Plenty of towels (so idk why it's gotten so many complaints about not enough towels). But the room had an awesome view and I was very pleased. The food in the buffet and 3 restaurants is AMAZING! The buffet has plenty of choices and separate grill stations for special requests. And my favorite restaurant was the Italian. That pasta was to die for!!! And we went there the night of my birthday and the staff set up the table with balloons and brought out a piece of my favorite kind of cake! They were amazing which leads to my next point...The staff was one of the best parts of the stay!!! They treated my boyfriend and I like family and always made sure we were having a great time. Special shoutouts to Nathaly (a waitress in the a la cartes), Gomez (a waiter in the a la cartes), Anquilno (the private beach waiter only available to royal and premium guests) and Felipe (one of the staff at the beach) as well as Alex and Carlos (the night time entertainment staff and pool games guys). They all literally became like family and we will miss them so much. They are one of the main reasons why my boyfriend and I WILL return to Gran Ventana. The pool games were fun and they always had bingo at 5 which they liven up so much and give out Brugal Rum as prizes. Lastly the beach was beautiful and very clean. The private area was really nice. The beach vendors can be annoying especially if you look interested but the key is to not look interested at all and just say no thank you and they will move on. It's not that serious. Overall this resort was top of the line. I loved the attention the staff paid to the guests and they are very clean. The maids did amazing and never stole anything from the room even when I forgot to lock something in the safe. Wifi was fast (the paid one which you get with the royal package) and is available everywhere in the resort. Not sure how the free one works as I never used it, but I recommend paying for the wifi. I would highly recommend this resort and I cannot wait until I return this time with a bigger group! I recommend the trip to ocean world and the zip and ride excursion. Those were super fun!!!! I had the best birthday. Thank you all at Gran Ventana Beach Resort!!!!
