Our Opinion

If you're looking for a great hotel with lots of food choices and a decent beach, this is it. Overall this is a solid 4 star, great for the kids and it even has a swim up bar for the adults.

A delightful beachfront hotel, set in the heart of the Playa Dorada Resort complex on 100 hectares of creatively landscaped grounds. From the central fountain in the lobby area to the Victorian-style gazebos in the main buffet restaurant, the Gran Ventana is known for its classy style. Well run and family-owned, it boasts a spectacular free-form pool with swim-up bar, and a second pool which provides its own quiet atmosphere.

Location: Beachfront, 5 minutes from downtown Puerto Plata, 25 minutes from the airport.

An "ok" hotel, with a few issues

We visited the VH Gran Ventana with friends, and it was our second trip to Puerta Plata. We love the area, but not this hotel. There is one buffet, and the service was unimpressive. The wait for coffee and water was long and there were not enough servers for the number of guests that were present. When we were lucky enough to have Denis available, he was great. The room had some significant issues. There is no place to unpack your clothes. With two of us in the room, it was a struggle. There was only one luggage stand, no dresser and only night table drawers. There were not enough hangers in the closet for two people to hang everything, so we had to manage with suitcases on the floor. There was no coffee maker in the room. The air conditioner leaked badly, and left water running down the closet door and puddling on the floor. The first person who came to fix this decided to just shut it off (totally unacceptable in the humid, warm temps), the second did the same and on the fourth day, when our door key system failed, we had some help.Joan (pronounced Joe-ahn) from the front desk came to fix the door and noticed the air coditioner issue, went to call someone to fix it and found the phone didn't work either. He did get things taken care of for us, but our stay was almost over by then. We appreciated his help regardless. The Ocean Grill was wonderful food, and had great service. Taifilo was prompt and cheerful, and Salomon was very courteous. The surf and turf was delicious. The private area of the beach was a nice perk, but it was very busy. Filipe and Aquillino were there for everything we needed, from chair pads to cold beverages. The beach was very clean, and the staff were most pleasant. We have stayed many places in the Carribbean, and I believe we have enough experience to say that this stay was average and despite the renovations at the hotel, there is still some room for improvement.

We stayed at the gran ventana for our honeymoon for 2 weeks. We were greeted with arrival drinks and the hotel reception staff were lovely. There was a fruit basket in our room and the mini bar was restocked each day. We were upgraded to the gold wrist band (there are 4 types white, gold, silver and black) as we were honeymooners so had the flexibility of last minute al a carte resultant bookings and an upgraded room which was lovely. All of the areas within the hotel and room were very clean and well presented the pool was cleaned and checked daily. (With a swim up pool bar that we made full use of). Having the beach on your doorstep was a must for us and the beach was lovely but lots of debris from the weeds in the sea. The staff were amazing always polite and helpful as was our rep Hosey. Outside of the hotel there is a small shopping mall with mostly closed down shops, good for a few souvenirs but not much else is around. To leave the resort it is best to go on trips and we were a bit disappointed by the lack of shops and restaurants outside the hotel. Overall we had an amazing time and would recommend this hotel if your are after a resort holiday.

Just got back from a glorious 2 weeks at Gran Ventanta.Great staff food and cleaniness.Took the premium package which gave us private beach with waiter service and entry to Vintage club all quality drinks and snacks. All 3 a la carte restaurants great although Italian was our favourite made special by Natilie and Carlos.Food in main buffet was also great with good choices at lunch and dinner.Main pool area vibrant during day but beach and quiet pool tranquil.Cant understand bad reviews .Food not overly hot but this is to be expected in a hot climate .Overall a very good 4 star hotel will be returning. If you use beach there are beach vendors but a polite no surffices and I bought a couple of nice bargains so dont be put off .

Great Stay!

We stayed at the Gran Ventana for 2 weeks starting 7th May. (me and my boyfriend - we are mid twenties) Upon arrival check in was easy and we were given a nice drink whilst we waited. I had been looking on here and seen a few reviews that got me a little worried, but having visited for myself those reviews, in my opinion, were just 'complain for the sake of it' reviews.Pillows were more than comfy, room was spotless. Everywhere you looked there was someone with a brush sweeping or cleaning.Cleanliness was no issueMini bar (2 bottles water, pepsi, 7up & 2 beers) was restocked daily.Wish there had been a bit more drawer space as we lived out of our suitcases mostly, but wardrobe was big enough just not many hangers but i had brought my own.The food was great, we aren't particularly fussy anyway but variety of food was good. something different ever night. my boyfriend piled on over a stone in 2 weeks, so that proves it! If you're a lager drinker, they have Presidente which is nice, cocktails were also good not to mention how strong they could be when made by certain bar tenders! Staff were good, some more polite and friendly than others. Sometimes felt that certain ones realised you didn't tip every time so were more reluctant to serve you, other than that though they were nice.Jackie at the quiet pool does great cocktails! We went on the paradise island trip, booked through the hotel however u can book with people on the beach but we were unsure so didn't. we loved that trip! snorkeling was amazing!Ocean world trip was good, however for the price that we paid no photos were included with dolphin encounter which was disappointing because the photos were pricey! however $20 for 1 photo printed did come in a frame and mounted so that was pretty nice!Take plenty of money for the gift shop - its expensive!Going back to the Gran Ventana, the only things i could say they could improve would be the sunbeds in the main pool area - way too hard and uncomfortable!Wifi could do with being able to be used on more than 1 device, bit annoying having to log in and out. Good signal in our room though. We stayed in Catalina building room 2230 (we've left you some hangers) and it was so quiet! sea facing rooms were definitely the best.Shopping mall next door was ok, however don't get too excited (like i did).. its only souvenirs etc and its not overly cheap but its somewhere to have a walk to!All in all we really enjoyed our holiday, gutted to be back at home and we would definitely visit again!

Almost Five Stars

This was our first time in the Dominican Republic and staying in VH Ventana Beach Resort (VGH). The staff in general, apart from the manager in the main reception which I will mention in detail later, were wonderful very attentive, helpfully and polite. They work exceptionally hard to ensure your stay at the VGH is a pleasant one. This is especially true of the hard working individuals in the main restaurant who are always vigilant ensuring you always have a full glass of water if needed or anything from the bar if required. On personal preference we found the table wine (Red and white) not to our tastes but it would be unfair to say it was not unpopular with other holiday makers with more robust palate! I am going to single out a few members of staff who we felt went the extra mile to make our time at VGH a memorable one. John (although his name badge said Joan) but I guess it's all in the pronunciation. He was such a cheerful chap who always engaged in conversation. His favourite greeting was "Alright mate" which did make us smile. Another, who I believe is one of two restaurant managers, was called Raul. Again he always came over to our table to say good morning and enquired how we were and always ensured everything was running smoothly. For us and our two friends Luis at the central bar wins best barman. Very friendly and engaging; made the perfect cocktail which he always served up in proper glasses rather than plastic ones - very much appreciated. Our chambermaid Maria was a little star - when I did my best to explain my pillows were two hard and lumpy she swapped them the following day for two super soft pillows - so a big thank you for that. The Animation team worked hard during the day around the pool organising games and doing Zumba for those who enjoy those activities but if you didn't then there was always the quiet pool you could retreat too or spend time on the beautiful beach which was kept very clean by a team of hotel staff. The evening entertainment was good but repetitive although the animation team worked hard and put maximum effort in each night. We would have loved to see some variety over the two weeks perhaps more than one tribute act should be booked for such a top end venue. I would have rated VGH five stars out of five except a power outage in our accommodation block, which happened 5 days into our two week stay, prevents me from doing so. We were told we had to vacate our rooms and move to another block. We put in a request to move to Beata block but we were told it was not possible as the rooms in this block were being re-furbished in the next 3 days. This turned out to be untruthful as over the remainder of our holidays, indeed the very next day, locals and later on other holiday makers were being accommodated in this block. An official complaint has been lodged via our Thomson Rep who I must say was very helpful once he was aware of it. We should have approached him immediately and I am sure he would have resolved it for us - Lesson learnt. Apart from the annoyance of having to down grade from a room with a queen size bed to one with two double beds and management at reception mis-leading us on room availability we did ultimately enjoy ourselves - A trip to Ocean World and swimming with Dolphins is highly recommended.
